One group of about 100 Hondurans has asked the Trump administration to pay them $ 50,000 each to leave if they could not enter the US. Arriving at the US Consulate on Tuesday morning, they delivered a letter harshly critical of US intervention in Central America and gave the Consulate 72 hours to respond.
“It may seem like a lot of money to you, but it is a small sum compared to everything the United States has stolen from Honduras,” said group leader Alfonso Guerrero Ulloa of the figure the group had settled upon for reparations. The letter also asked Trump to remove Honduran president Orlando Hernandez from office.
Ulloa said the group does not have a plan for what they will do if the US rejects their terms, but that $ 50,000 would at least be enough for caravan members to start a business if they must return home. He fled to Mexico 30 years ago after he was accused of bombing a Chinese restaurant and has lived outside Honduras ever since.
A second group of about 50 migrants asked the US to speed up the processing of asylum claims to admit 300 new arrivals per day at San Ysidro Port of Entry. The port currently allows between 40 and 100 asylum seekers through per day, a pace the group says violates both American and international law mandating immediate processing, and puts migrants at risk.

US responsible for ‘misery & horrors’ forcing people to flee Latin America – Chomsky
Led by Pueblo Sin Fronteras, the organization that organized the migrant caravans, the second group was able to secure a meeting with Mexican immigration officials, whom they asked to stop working with police to deport caravan members. About 15 members of the second group previously attempted a hunger strike in order to speed up the asylum process.
“A lot of people are leaving because there is no solution here,” said Tijuana resident Douglas Matute. “We thought they would let us in. But Trump sent the military instead of social workers.”
While neither group was aware of the other, both said their messages were well-received by the US Consulate. “It was nice to be treated with respect,” said Ulloa, while Xochitl Castillo, a member of the second caravan, received a “warm welcome” from “very kind” officials who promised to pass their letter on to Trump, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, San Ysidro Port Director Sidney Aki and Commissioner of the Office of Customs and Border Protection Kevin McAleenan. Castillo did not give a deadline for a US response.
The migrant caravans have shrunk significantly, from close to 7,000 people who arrived in Tijuana a month ago seeking entry into the US. Castillo explained that 2,500 of the migrants have applied for humanitarian visas in Mexico, while 700 have voluntarily returned to their home countries and 300 have been deported. Many of the deportees were sent home last month after their attempt to rush the border was met with a volley of tear gas from US border patrol, who shut down the crossing for several hours. Another 3,500 migrants are assumed to have crossed illegally into the US or traveled to other Mexican border cities.
The letter from Castillo’s group also criticized “US intervention in Central America” and characterized the caravans’ predicament as a “humanitarian crisis,” a possible nod to Tijuana mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum, who has used that term to refer to the migrants whose presence in his city has “hurt us.” Gastelum threatened to sue Pueblo Sin Fronteras for the damage caused by the caravans, whom he accuses of acting violently and disrespectfully toward the locals. Five thousand migrants were initially housed in a converted sports stadium in Tijuana, awaiting their chance to apply for refugee status.
Despite the diminished migrant “threat,” Trump continues to push for a border wall, threatening on Tuesday to shut down the government if the funding does not pass Congress by December 21. He previously threatened to cut off financial aid to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras if they did not put a stop to the caravans before they reached the border, and has also accused Venezuela of sending its people northward.

A private plane has crashed on a road in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, shortly after it took off from the runway. At least six people were injured, none fatally, with photos showing the plane being broken in half.
The Honduran Aviation Agency said that the incident took place at 11:15 am [5:15 pm GMT] on Tuesday as the plane was departing from Tegucigalpa. The plane, a Gulfstream G200 Galaxy N813WM jet, is said to have crashed at the end of a two-kilometer runway at Toncontin International Airport, known as one of the world’s most dangerous airports due to its short runway and a tricky approach. The airport is located in rocky terrain and is enclosed by residential neighborhoods.

Six people were injured in the crash, police spokesman Mario Rivera said, as cited by ABC. All the injured are in stable condition. The airport temporary shut down all operations, as the authorities were making sure that it was safe to proceed with the flights.
As the rescues arrived, they doused the plane with foam, although it’s unclear if the fire had broken out before or after the crash. The destination of the plane and the cause of the crash are also unknown at the moment. Earlier that morning, the plane left Austin, Texas, for Honduras, according to the aviation records.
Toncontin International Airport was named the second most dangerous air haven in the world by the American History Channel’s ‘Most Extreme Airports’ program. It has seen several high-profile mishaps through the years, with the deadliest being in 1989, when a Boeing crashed with 131 people on board. The authorities vowed to replace the airport with a new one, that would have a longer runway and would be located further away from the residential area, near a military base. The construction of the airport began in October 2016 and was initially set to be completed by mid-2018. However, the work has been plagued by delays and, according to the government’s newest projections, the airport is now to open its doors in November next year.

President Donald Trump has once again urged US lawmakers to immediately enact stricter immigration laws and build a wall on the southern border to prevent “caravans” of illegal immigrants from entering the US.
Over the past two days, Trump has been bombarding his Twitter followers with messages urging Congress to use the ‘nuclear option’ if necessary, in order to pass a law that would curb the flight of illegal immigration to the United States. The messages blaming Latin American countries for taking advantage of US immigration laws intensified on Monday.
Honduras, Mexico and many other countries that the U.S. is very generous to, sends many of their people to our country through our WEAK IMMIGRATION POLICIES. Caravans are heading here. Must pass tough laws and build the WALL. Democrats allow open borders, drugs and crime!

“Honduras, Mexico and many other countries that the US is very generous to, sends many of their people to our country through our WEAK IMMIGRATION POLICIES,” Trump tweeted Monday night. “Caravans are heading here. Must pass tough laws and build the WALL.”
Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. “Caravans” coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!

Monday night’s Tweet was the latest in a series of messages Trump began posting on Easter Sunday, accusing Mexico of doing “very little, if not NOTHING” to prevent illegals from crossing into the US. While urging US lawmakers to reform the existing immigration practices, Trump called on the Mexican authorities to do more to halt the “caravans” of migrants coming from other Latin American countries.
“Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large ‘Caravans’ of people enter their country. They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws,” Trump said in a statement issued earlier in the day.
Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. NEED WALL!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 1, 2018
To beef up concern over border security, Trump unleashed a barrage of messages criticizing the “dumb immigration laws” in the US. “As ridiculous as it sounds, the laws of our country do not easily allow us to send those crossing our Southern Border back where they came from. A whole big wasted procedure must take place. Mexico & Canada have tough immigration laws, whereas ours are an Obama joke,” Trump said in another tweet.
As ridiculous as it sounds, the laws of our country do not easily allow us to send those crossing our Southern Border back where they came from. A whole big wasted procedure must take place. Mexico & Canada have tough immigration laws, whereas ours are an Obama joke. ACT CONGRESS

The Mexican Foreign Ministry rejected Trump’s accusations, noting on Monday evening that caravans in southern Mexico are still subject to the administrative migratory procedure of the country. The ministry also rejected claims that it promotes illegal migration and noted that, ultimately, it is the US authorities that determine whether to allow the migrants into the United States.
“It will be the competent authorities of the United States that decide if it is the case, whether to authorize the entry to their territory of the caravan members,” the ministry said, according to El Universal. The ministry also said it did not foster illegal migration “under any circumstances,” as cited by Reuters.
Trump’s warning about “caravans” of illegals marching towards the country’s borders was accompanied by a tweet declaring that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy is “dead.”
DACA is dead because the Democrats didn’t care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon… No longer works. Must build Wall and secure our borders with proper Border legislation. Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!

“DACA is dead because the Democrats didn’t care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon… No longer works. Must build Wall and secure our borders with proper Border legislation. Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!” the Republican president said.
‘No more DACA deal!’ Trump rules out legal status for childhood arrivals
After he considered blocking the bill, due to a lack of funding for the Mexican border wall and because 800,000 DACA immigrants aren’t even mentioned in the legislation, Trump eventually signed the $ 1.3 trillion spending bill on March 23 to avoid a government shutdown. Trump, who tried to end the DACA program last September, allegedly wanted $ 25 billion in long-term wall funding in exchange for protection of the ‘Dreamers.’ While the bill allocated $ 1.6 billion for Mexican border security, the sum will not be enough to erect the 700 miles of the wall the US president has envisioned.

A massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake has occurred in the Caribbean Sea, north of Honduras.
The earthquake, which was initially reported as having a 7.8 magnitude, occurred at a depth of 33km (20 miles) on Tuesday night.
A Tsunami warning has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
Hazardous waves, between 0.3 to 1 meters, above tide level could hit the coasts of Belize, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, Cayman Islands, and Jamaica.
The PTWC has advised coastal residents of these countries to stay alert and follow local instructions.
The first tsunami waves are expected to have already arrived at Puerto Cortes in Honduras, Cozumel in Mexico and Santiago de Cuba in Cuba.
PWTC estimates Montego Bay in Jamaica could receive waves at 11.04pm (local time). Waves are then expected to reach Trujillo in Honduras at 10.28pm (local time), Belize City in Belize at 10.52pm (local time), and Cuba’s Santa Cruz del Sur at 1.36am (local time).
Tsunamis are a series of waves, and the break between each wave can vary from five minutes to an hour.

Six people, including Hilda Hernandez, the 51-year-old sister and advisor of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, were killed when the helicopter carrying them crashed on its way from the capital, Tegucigalpa, to Comayagua. The remains of the aircraft were discovered after reconnaissance helicopters and ground teams were dispatched in severe weather conditions, the Honduran armed forces said in a statement, cited by Reuters. No survivors were found. The military said they would investigate the causes of the crash. Honduras has been wracked by instability after the recent presidential election, in which the dragged-out official count handed victory to Hernandez, who supported the 2009 US-backed coup. Opposition parties are disputing the result, which has triggered violent protests.
Hernandez, who has been Honduras’ president since 2014, was one of the lawmakers in 2009 to support the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya over his seeking a referendum on re-election. Ironically, now he himself faces accusations of trying to hold on to power.
An alumni of the State University of New York, Hernandez is said to have established close relations with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, from the time Kelly was the head of US Southern Command and the Department of Homeland Security.
Now his government struggles to contain large-scale protests, akin to those that rocked the country after Zelaya’s ouster, after the opposition alleged fraud in the election vote count.
The incumbent president was trailing opposition candidate, Salvador Nasralla, by a large margin in a preliminary count of the 26 November elections, when the country’s electoral commission said that Hernandez was closing in on his rival.
Shortly afterwards, an alleged technical glitch caused the commission to stop publishing the results. When it announced on Friday that Hernandez was leading by 46,000 votes after some 95 percent of ballots counted, mass protest erupted. The count has been delayed since with Nasralla demanding a recount of more ballot boxes than the commission had offered.
Hernandez’ government has imposed a nationwide curfew amid civil unrest following the election.
At least one protester has been killed, and 20 have been injured in the clashes. Tensions spilled over after both main candidates claimed victory in Sunday’s vote.
“Honduran people have taken the streets very courageously, just as they did in 2009, when Manuel Zelaya, the democratically elected President, was overthrown in a coup,” Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the City University of New York, Daniel Shaw, told RT.
The coup “was backed by Washington DC, when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, and Barack Obama was the President, the Honduran people were in the streets for months and months to denounce this coup,” he said. Shaw added that the Honduran people will “continue to be in the streets to denounce this electoral fraud.”
The government has given the army and police more powers to contain the unrest – something Professor Shaw calls a “cruel military and police rule,” in violation of “international law [and] of the human rights law.
“We have to see the bigger picture here, the role that Honduras has always played in Central America, as the backyard of the US,” he continued. Shaw noted that the US has military bases there, which they are using “to do as they will.”
The professor told RT that in Central and Latin America, “the US Embassy has been a hotbed of activity for the past few nights, where CIA officials and US intelligence officials have been exchanging plans with their top lieutenants.”
People are protesting what they call suspicious delays in the vote counting, and political activist and lawyer Cristhian Mancera Mejia agrees that fraud, indeed, is possible.
“We’re looking at a president in the case of Hernandez, who is trying to prolong his time in power now. If it is true that he did win the elections, I would hope for the sake of democracy and for Honduras that he comes with results soon enough so that people can understand and know who their president is, and who the new president will be,” he said.
Turmoil will only grow if the uncertainty in results continues, he warned. “Hopefully it doesn’t lead to more bloodshed we have learned that there are some protesters have been killed in the streets,” Mejia told RT. “I think we have to calm down and offer the people of Honduras a result that satisfies not only the people, but also the region, as well.
“It seems like these leaders have not learned the lesson,” Mejia said. “By not excepting the results or by telling people that they have won, when in fact they have not, or probably even by manipulating the information, they lead the population to think that there is some kind of manipulation going on, that the truth has not been told.”
Unfortunately, there’s no way to make everyone happy, Meija believes: “If the results are given – whether it is in favor of Salvador, or in favor of Hernandez, nobody is going to be satisfied.”
The unrest is destined to repeat again and again, even should it calm down soon, says William Robinson, professor of Sociology, Global and Latin American Studies.
“This is a country in which a democratically-elected government was overthrown in 2009. There was a mass movement and opposition to that. It eventually calms down: 2010, 2011, 2012. Then there were elections in 2013. Again the opposition won those elections, according to the leading international observers, but again there was electoral fraud.”

At least five people died and dozens others were injured during a stampede in the Honduran capital where fans tried to make their way into an already full stadium to watch the final of the local professional football league.
The tragic episode happened at the General Tiburcio Carias Andino national stadium in Tegucigalpa, where Motagua and Deportes Progreseno were set to contest the final of the Clausura Tournament of the National Football League.
The stampede was sparked as more and more fans attempted to enter an already overcrowded stadium which has capacity to house 35,000 people. Police had reportedly to use water cannons to keep the fans out of the venue outside Gate 11.
Panic ensued and quickly spread as people scrambled to get to safety. The Honduran Fire Department reported 25 people injured as a result of the rush.
“Two people died in the stadium and two in the hospital,” a hospital spokesman said, later reporting that another person had died.
Motagua thrashed Deportes Progreseno 3-0 in a game that was preceded by a minute of silence for victims of the stampede tragedy.
