  • Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson announced that his company will commit $ 1 million to support homelessness programs.
  • This comes after 60 percent voted “yes” to San Francisco’s homelessness measure “Prop C” on Tuesday, but this measure, which would bring the city $ 300 million in funding for homelessness programs, is likely to face legal disputes that could keep the funding on reserve for years.
  • Twilio previously did not take a position on Prop C, but Lawson says Prop C should motivate San Francisco business leaders to take action on homelessness.

After San Franciscans voted “yes” on the hotly debated homelessness measure called “Prop C,” Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson announced that his company will commit $ 1 million to support homelessness programs.

Leading up to the election, the cloud communications company did not take a position on Proposition C. However, other tech giants in the city were especially vocal — notably Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff who advocated for Prop C, and Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square, who spoke out against it.

  • Proposition C, a measure which will tax San Francisco’s largest companies in order to combat homelessness, passed on Tuesday.
  • Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has been a vocal proponent of Prop C and hailed the victory in a tweet.
  • Prop C would target Salesforce, which Benioff has estimated will pay between $ 10 million and $ 11 million a year.

Marc Benioff has tweeted jubilantly following the success of Proposition C.

The tax scheme was voted through on Tuesday during the US midterms. It will tax big San Francisco companies whose gross annual receipts total $ 50 million to raise money to combat the city’s homelessness crisis.

  • Los Angeles county is close to building one backyard unit for the homeless as part of its $ 550,000 pilot program, but the remaining units could be further behind.
  • Despite interest from both landlords and homeless residents, the county faces a number of logistical and legal barriers.
  • While the county continues its efforts, the city is looking to secure funding for its own backyard pilot program.

Los Angeles sits at the epicenter of California’s homelessness crisis. In the last six years, homelessness has risen by 75% across most of LA county, while the city itself has more homeless residents than Seattle and San Francisco combined. As the state directs more attention to solving this problem through affordable housing, LA has ramped up its own efforts to house the unsheltered.

One of the latest, and most innovative, solutions is the development of accessory dwelling units (ADUs), or small, secondary units located on a residential property — often found in backyards.

‘Humanitarian Crisis in Hollywood’: Chronic homelessness vs. the American Dream https://briefnews.eu/humanitarian-crisis-in-hollywood-chronic-homelessness-vs-the-american-dream/ https://briefnews.eu/humanitarian-crisis-in-hollywood-chronic-homelessness-vs-the-american-dream/#respond Sun, 01 Apr 2018 03:42:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/humanitarian-crisis-in-hollywood-chronic-homelessness-vs-the-american-dream/

Thousands of people in one of America’s richest cities live on sidewalks infested with flesh-eating bacteria and tuberculosis. A Redfish Media report looks at the chronic homelessness crisis in Los Angeles.

Homelessness in Los Angeles has increased 43 percent in just four years. Skid Row, the epicenter of homelessness in the City of Angels, is home to approximately 2,500 people who live on the streets in a 49 square block area. It is the biggest concentration of homeless people in the United States. Overall, a staggering 60,000 people live without shelter in LA county.

Reverend Andy Bales is the CEO of the Union Rescue mission, which provides shelter to 1,000 people on any given night. He told Redfish Media  about the appalling conditions in Skid Row, which, according to the most recent Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council action letter, is 80 restrooms shy of satisfying the minimum standards of a long-term refugee camp. It has nine permanent restrooms for 1,777 people, or one for every 197 homeless people, compared to the UN refugee camp standards of 20 per person.

Bales outlined just how dangerous this extreme lack of basic sanitation is. “I actually contracted three flesh-eating diseases E. coli, staph and strep from the sidewalks when I had a wound boot on and, after two years in a wheelchair I ended up losing my lower right leg. That is the condition of the health on Skid Row because of the shortage of restrooms. It really is a crisis.” Bales added that a certain strain of tuberculosis, which is not found anywhere else in the world, also thrives in the area.

The chronic conditions in Los Angeles and in other cities around America prompted the government to invite the UN’s special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Philip Alston, to carry out inspections last year.

In his damning report, Alston said: “The United States is alone among developed countries in insisting that while human rights are of fundamental importance, they do not include rights that guard against dying of hunger, dying from a lack of access to affordable healthcare, or growing up in a context of total deprivation.”

Alston concluded that the “the American dream is rapidly becoming the American illusion.” On Skid Row, the poverty and deprivation make it very hard for anyone to even believe in the illusion any more.

There’s a crisis in homelessness among high school students across the US https://briefnews.eu/theres-a-crisis-in-homelessness-among-high-school-students-across-the-us/ https://briefnews.eu/theres-a-crisis-in-homelessness-among-high-school-students-across-the-us/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 23:29:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theres-a-crisis-in-homelessness-among-high-school-students-across-the-us/ homeless teensCarlos Barria/Reuters

  • About 700,000 young people across the US aged 13 to 17 experienced homelessness in the past year.
  • When a student is homeless in high school, it can cause high levels of stress and anxiety, and takes their focus away from academics.
  • But research has found that school counselors often lack knowledge about students who are homeless, and have limited training to support their needs.

One in 30.

That’s what a new first-of-its-kind study found was the number of students ages 13 to 17 who have experienced homelessness in the past year. The figure represents about 700,000 young people nationwide.

When a student is homeless in high school, it can cause high levels of stress and anxiety. While other students are able to focus on getting good grades and planning for college, students who are homeless often worry about basic necessities, such as food, clothing and shelter.

In order to turn things around and help homeless students succeed and have a decent shot at college, school counselors should be seen as our first line of support. I say that based on years of experience as a researcher who has focused on the critical role that school counselors play in helping low-income and first-generation college students make it to college.

Unfortunately, what I have found through my research is that school counselors often feel helpless despite their desire to help students who are experiencing homelessness. They also feel underprepared to support the needs of such students. With increased preparation and knowledge on homelessness, school counselors would be in a much better position to help homeless students succeed.

School counselors may meet homeless students’ basic needs by collecting school supplies, clothing or food items for students in need. This can be done by coordinating community or school donation programs, collecting monetary donations from the community, or applying for grants through the Department of Education.

They may also identify resources in the community and collaborate with stakeholders, such as social workers and teachers to form a supportive system.

But my research has found that school counselors often lack knowledge about students who are homeless, and have limited training to support their needs. This in turn puts the educational future of students experiencing homelessness in jeopardy.

One of the reasons homeless students can be difficult to identify is because homelessness is often thought of as individuals living on the street or in a shelter. The reality is that homelessness can also take many other forms. In fact, the federal definition of homelessness includes those who lack a “fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.” This includes individuals and families who are living with others due to a loss of housing, often referred to as “doubling up.”

Those living in shelters or locations such as motels, hotels, trailer parks or campgrounds because they lack other consistent housing options may also be considered homeless. Individuals who are under 18 and living without a parent or guardian and lack consistent housing are considered “unaccompanied homeless youth.”

Through having a clear understanding of the various definitions, school counselors can identify students experiencing homelessness quickly and educate others so that if there is a housing loss, students can be provided with the supports they need.

Counselor contact is critical

high school studentsJim Mone/APResearch indicates that students from low-income backgrounds are more likely to go to college after they graduate when they have a series of contacts with their school counselors, as opposed to seeing their counselor only once. Unfortunately, my work suggests that school counselors are often forced to focus on meeting homeless students’ basic needs.

This leads counselors to offer homeless students the kind of general college support that they would give all students. Consequently, many counselors may neglect the highly specialized college planning needs of students who are homeless.

Further, one report suggests that although school counselors are in a position to positively impact students’ career and college readiness, they need more extensive graduate and in-service training on college and career counseling.

Generally speaking, students who are homeless face emotional distress in the form of anxiety or low self-esteem and lower academic achievement.

School can be a place of consistency that can support their postsecondary planning, but only if schools are mindful of the unique needs of high school students experiencing homelessness. Schools must provide individualized support that focuses on enhancing students’ expectations of college attendance and their belief in their ability to attend.

When they are identified, students experiencing homelessness can be supported through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

The federal law includes provisions meant to remove barriers, such as by providing transportation for students who move out of a district because they became homeless. It also allows for quick enrollment for students experiencing homelessness regardless of the required paperwork, and funding for programming such as academic support or afterschool programs.

It also allows for a local liaison to ensure students are identified and receiving supports they need. Further, when McKinney-Vento was recently revised under the Every Student Succeeds Act, it specifically stated that school counselors and local liaisons must provide “individualized” college support for students who are homeless.

But ultimately, the federal law by itself won’t do anything to help students experiencing homelessness. It’s all about how well the law is executed at the school level.

Information is crucial

Schools should also include information about McKinney-Vento and college planning that would be directly beneficial to homeless youth on their websites. Unfortunately, few schools are doing so.

Schools can also develop systems of support in the community to support homeless students’ basic needs. This will allow them more time to focus on other things, such as college planning.

When advising about college, counselors must determine things such as whether students need campus housing during breaks, if the school has affordable meal plans and if the university has support systems in place for additional counseling, advising, mentoring or tutoring. Directing students to apply to universities that are a good fit will help them to be more successful.

With intentional planning, schools can be a resource for students experiencing homelessness that helps them to stay on track, graduate and go on to college. But if we continue to neglect the specific needs of homeless students, we run the risk of consigning them to lives of uncertainty and placing their college dreams further out of reach.

Wrestling's Superstar Who Fought His Way Out of Homelessness https://briefnews.eu/wrestlings-superstar-who-fought-his-way-out-of-homelessness/ https://briefnews.eu/wrestlings-superstar-who-fought-his-way-out-of-homelessness/#respond Mon, 16 Oct 2017 06:58:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wrestlings-superstar-who-fought-his-way-out-of-homelessness/ As an African-American boy growing up in South Central L.A., Willie McClinton Jr. wasn’t interested in becoming the next Tupac, Michael Jordan or Deion Sanders. Starting as early as age 4, McClinton just wanted to be one thing: the next Hulk Hogan.

“I remember Hulk Hogan talking crap about somebody he was going to beat up at a pay-per-view [event],” the 30-year-old professional wrestler known as Willie Mack says as we peer over the crowded New York Comic Con floor from the El Rey Network booth. “It looked like they were having fun beating people up, traveling the world and people cheering them on. I knew right then that’s what I wanted to do.”

Never mind that Mack would grow up to have a heavyset physique that was less Hulk and more bulk. A quarter-century after seeing the WWE, Mack has become a crowd-owning pro wrestler on the independent scene who is making his mark as part of Lucha Underground, a weekly TV show produced by Mark Burnett (Apprentice, Shark Tank) and Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network and broadcast from the Temple, a slightly mythical warehouse space in East L.A. He’s had a long road through heartache, setbacks and homelessness, but here he is, signing autographs for kids who are fans of Willie Mack.

Born in St. Louis and raised in South Central, Mack has a troubled backstory. At three months old, he was placed in foster care after he nearly died in an accidental house fire started by his drug-addicted mother. Mack stayed with his foster mother until he was 14, when she passed away. Soon his father reentered his life, helping push his son’s dreams forward. The day after Mack graduated high school, he enrolled in WPW wrestling school in Anaheim.

“Once I graduated, I went straight to Big Five, bought some knee pads, some wrestling shoes and showed up,” he says. “I trained for about 11 months, then had my first match May 14, 2006.”

A promoter once told me, ‘Your gimmick should be a jungle man. … I told him, ‘Hell, no.’

Willie Mack

Watching Mack wrestle, you think your eyes are playing tricks — only it really is a heavyset 280-pound Black man flying around the ring like a lithe gymnast. His athleticism is remarkable for a man of his size and redefines what a big man can do inside the squared circle. Getting his start on the indie wrestling scene, he wrestled in front of small crowds at gymnasiums and warehouses, building a following, but it wasn’t just his body type that held him back.

Historically, African-Americans have had a hard time breaking through in professional wrestling. For dark-skinned pro wrestlers, especially, ugly stereotypes still prevail.

“A promoter once told me, ‘Your gimmick should be a jungle man. You should grow that Afro out, come out with a loincloth and be a bad guy,’ ” Mack reflects. “I told him, ‘Hell, no. I’m just gonna go out there and be me.’ Sure enough, I go out there and instead of them booing me, they were cheering me.”

Refusing to succumb to “gimmicks” helped Mack stand out. He started tearing up the indie circuit, and he got the chance of a lifetime when he was asked to join NXT, WWE’s developmental division, in 2014. Then, just days before he was due to arrive in Orlando, he was released. Rumors swirled, pointing to everything from medical issues to the WWE’s signing of another African-American — Mack contends it’s the latter, and that the medical excuse was meant to deflect from the WWE not wanting two Black wrestlers with similar skills.

With so much invested in the move to Florida, Mack returned to California with his girlfriend, unemployed and depressed. After a couple of months sleeping in their car and crashing on friends’ couches, Mack set to working his way back into the indie scene. A call from Lucha Underground offering him a role on their Wi TV show was his chance to get back on his feet, and his opening match cemented “The Mack” as a major player for the El Rey Network.

Lu s3 ep320 8077

“It was basically a ‘we‘re gonna show you’ match,” he reflects of his violent brawl with Brian Cage at Ultima Lucha, the season finale. “We did what we did and guess it turned enough heads to make them insert us into the big picture.”

When asked whether he thinks the WWE may come calling again, Mack isn’t sure, but he suspects they know what he’s up to. “I’m pretty sure they are watching by now and somebody’s like, ‘Why did we let him go?’ ” he says with a laugh.

Happy to have found a home at the Temple, the warehouse space where Lucha Underground is filmed, Mack isn’t ruling out a return to the WWE, but he knows he doesn’t quite fit the mold for the pro wrestling industry. Where some see a gradual shifting away from chiseled bodybuilder types, he’s aware that his journey would be more difficult than most.

“I do think you definitely still need to be an Adonis to take that main event leap, but there’s so much great wrestling out there now it seems like setting yourself apart from the pack is what is in style,” says Bleacher Report’s Kazeem Famuyide, who hesitates before addressing the question of Mack’s race. “I’ll just say, he will have to be extremely special to really break through.”

Whether or not he ever shows up in the WWE is anyone’s guess. But with a childhood full of pain and hardship, what Willie Mack wants is to give his fans what wrestling gave him: an escape.

“When you are in my presence — no matter if it’s for an hour or five minutes — I’m going to make sure my match is the only thing you’re thinking about,” he says. “Forget about everything else outside. Just think about what’s happening right now.”
