Earlier this year, Ben Savage played a Young Mandy Patinkin in the penultimate episode of Criminal Minds. Two months later, he played a Young Mandy Patinkin in the penultimate episode of Homeland.

His casting on the Showtime thriller, as you can imagine, was no coincidence.

For the purpose of flashbacks to East Berlin circa 1986, in which the oneday CIA bigwig began cultivating an asset, Homeland “went through so many discussions about how we would portray the Young Saul,” co-creator/executive producer Alex Gansa tells TVLine. For starters, “There was some talk of trying to make Mandy (who is 67 in real life) look like he was in his late 20s,” Gansa shares. “But we did some tests and it just wasn’t believable.”

Producers briefly considered hiring one of Patinkin’s two non-actor sons, both of whom are in their 30s, while also bringing actors to read for the role. And while Gansa was unaware that 39-year-old Savage, best known for TV’s Boy Meets World, had twice played a younger version of Patinkin’s Jason Gideon on CBS’ Criminal Minds, luckily someone in his camp remembered that spot-on casting.

“I think it was Judy Henderson, our casting director, who was aware of that,” Gansa offers. “And when Ben came in to read, the resemblance is so strong it felt like the smart thing to do. He just bears such an uncanny resemblance to Mandy.”

Savage’s latest turn as a Young Patinkin wound up not being a speaking role per se, however. Instead, line readings in Patinkin’s own, very distinctive voice were dubbed in for the flashbacks, to further create the illusion of his younger self.

The series finale of Showtime’s Homeland airs this Sunday, April 26 at 9/8c.

Carrie’s mission of peace in Afghanistan got a rude awakening this week on Homeland, thanks to not one but two (!) kidnappings.

We pick up right where we left off, with Carrie gawking at Yevgeny as he leaves the Afghan VP G’ulom’s office. G’ulom refers to Yevgeny and his intelligence cohorts as “businessmen,” but Carrie knows that’s not true. She tries to talk G’ulom into walking back his comments about releasing Taliban prisoners, but he’s a stubborn old mule. When she points out that he’ll have to release them eventually if the peace process works, he replies: “Or what?” She leaves empty-handed, and gets more upset when Saul tells her she can’t go after Yevgeny; they made an immunity deal with him to get Carrie released.

She gets a juicy lead, though, when an anonymous tipster points her towards a woman named Samira, who called out corruption under G’ulom’s watch before her husband was killed by a car bomb — a bomb clearly intended for her. Carrie wants to know what she knows, so she has Jenna Bragg set up a fake job interview for Samira as a diversion so Carrie can snoop around Samira’s apartment. During the interview, Carrie finds a USB drive stitched inside a burqa… but Jenna flubs her script and makes Samira suspicious. She tries to flee the interview after snapping a photo of Jenna’s face, and Jenna panics. By the time Carrie arrives, they have Samira tied up in a hotel room with a hood over her head. (Kidnapping #1!)

Homeland Season 8 Episode 2 SamiraCarrie plays good cop, untying Samira and removing the hood. She shows her the USB drive she found: It contains personnel files left over from Samira’s corruption investigation that clearly implicate G’ulom. (He’s been scamming the U.S. out of tens of millions of dollars, taking money for military bases that were never built.) Carrie wants to use this as blackmail to get G’ulom to take back his prisoner comments — but Samira doesn’t want to let the man who killed her husband off the hook. She wishes the Americans would just get out of Afghanistan already and leave them alone, but Carrie reminds her that without the U.S. there to negotiate peace, G’ulom will be too powerful for anyone to unseat.

She must’ve convinced Samira, because Carrie takes the files straight to G’ulom, accusing him of stealing at least a hundred million dollars. G’ulom shrugs: Doesn’t every politician steal a little for themselves? Carrie thinks his fellow Afghans would kill him if they knew, though, and he seems to agree: He holds a news conference confirming that he’ll release all Taliban prisoners after all. Carrie and her co-workers celebrate with a drink at a local bar… where Carrie runs into Yevgeny. She yells at him to get away from her, but he reveals he’s the one who tipped her off about Samira. Plus, he seems surprised and hurt that she’d be so rude to him — as she remembers begging him not to leave her back in that Russian prison.

Homeland Season 8 Episode 2 SaulLOOK WHO’S BACK! | Saul gets a blast from the past when Max informs him he’s picked up audio of Taliban leader Haissam Haqqani. (Remember him as Season 4’s Big Bad?) Based on the audio, Haqqani actually wants peace with the Afghan government, so when Haqqani’s second cousin returns home thanks to a prisoner release, Saul enlists him to get a message to Haqqani, reminding him of their shared history and inviting him to meet face-to-face.

Max warns him, though, that he’s seeing a lot of Pakistani intelligence activity in the area, and as Haqqani’s convoy pulls up to meet Saul, a sniper hits them with a rocket launcher, blowing up one car in a massive fireball. In the chaos that follows, Saul is captured and shoved into a truck with a bag over his head. (Kidnapping #2!) He’s taken to an undisclosed location, where he finds himself face-to-face with Haqqani. Saul is overjoyed to see he’s still alive… but Haqqani responds by knocking Saul out cold with the butt of his rifle.

Further Intel:

* Tasneem took a side trip to Pakistan, too, and met with an old friend of Saul’s, who’s now confined to a wheelchair and shooting squirrels with a pistol. (Yikes.) She knows Saul is in Pakistan and trying to connect with Haqqani, and his old friend ranted about how the Americans hate them and their attempts at independence. Yep, based on her getting a whole scene here without Carrie or Saul, I’m convinced Tasneem will be a huge factor this season.

* We’ve got new opening credits, people! The footage spans the entire series, including lots of Brody and (sniff) Quinn’s death. It also throws in some tantalizing glimpses of what’s still to come this season, like a scene of Saul angrily screaming at a room full of top military brass.

* Is Jenna just a colossal screw-up… or is she actually a mole working to undermine Carrie’s mission from within? (Sorry, it’s Homeland, I have to ask.)

* R.I.P. Wine-Drunk Carrie. At the bar, she ordered a soda water with lime and laughed that “I’m not as fun as I used to be.” And winemakers all across the Napa Valley mourned in unison.

Carrie Mathison is (finally) back on the case as Homeland returns for its final season… and hey, where’s she been all this time? Well, she doesn’t exactly know, to be honest.

We get our first look at Season 8 of the Showtime spy thriller (debuting Sunday, Feb. 9 at 9/8c) in a new teaser — which you can watch above — in which Carrie gets interrogated about whether she’s ever conspired with a foreign government. “Are you accusing me of something?” she fires back. But to be fair, her memory has a pretty big hole in it: “I lost seven months of my life,” she confesses in another scene.

Her interrogator knows about that, too, asking her: “How can you be so sure if there’s 180 days of your life you don’t remember?” And in case you forgot where we left off in Season 7: Carrie was held captive in a Russian gulag and released to Saul as a quivering shell of her former self. That confinement without psychiatric drugs apparently took a sledgehammer to her memory… but Saul needs her help in negotiating a peace treaty with the Taliban in Afghanistan in his new role as national security advisor.

Press PLAY above for a sneak peek at Homeland‘s final season, and then hit the comments below to share your first impressions… and Season 8 predictions.

Homeland Security has ‘no reason to doubt’ China spy chip refutals https://briefnews.eu/homeland-security-has-no-reason-to-doubt-china-spy-chip-refutals/ https://briefnews.eu/homeland-security-has-no-reason-to-doubt-china-spy-chip-refutals/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 19:05:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/homeland-security-has-no-reason-to-doubt-china-spy-chip-refutals/

Amazon and Apple have an unusual ally in their attempt to shoot down Bloomberg‘s claims of Chinese hardware surveillance: the US Department of Homeland Security. The agency joined the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre in saying it had “no reason to doubt” refutals at the moment. Supply chain protection is “core” to Homeland Security’s mission, according to the statement. This doesn’t completely rule out a future investigation, but the agency isn’t about to hop on the case.

Bloomberg has maintained that Chinese server firm Super Micro had installed surveillance chips on machines for nearly 30 companies, and that both Amazon and Apple reported the suspicious hardware to law enforcement as far back as 2015. Both companies have outright rejected the report, however, claiming that they found no such chips and never worked with the FBI on such a case. Apple went so far as to say it had “repeatedly and consistently” provided statements rejecting Bloomberg‘s account before it published the story.

The news outlet has stuck by its reporting so far. Without official support, though, the claims might not get much momentum. The DHS statement also suggests the US government’s suspicion of Chinese technology has its limits — in some cases, it wants to see evidence before it takes action.

Whoopi Goldberg demands Homeland Security stage Trump intervention https://briefnews.eu/whoopi-goldberg-demands-homeland-security-stage-trump-intervention/ https://briefnews.eu/whoopi-goldberg-demands-homeland-security-stage-trump-intervention/#respond Wed, 18 Jul 2018 17:17:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/whoopi-goldberg-demands-homeland-security-stage-trump-intervention/

As pundits across the US continue their descent into rage over President Donald Trump’s “treasonous” meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Whoopi Goldberg has called on Homeland Security to intervene.

Speaking on ‘The View’ on Monday, Goldberg and her fellow presenters competed to see who could be the most enraged about Trump’s behavior at the Helsinki summit with Putin.

John McCain’s daughter Megan got the most words in, addressing National Security Advisor John Bolton and the Trump administration. “Are you an America first, do you not believe in genocide? Or are you going to allow the chemical gassing of children right now?”

However, it was Godlberg’s call for the Department of Homeland security to step in that won out in the end.

“If this was anybody else, If this was anybody else, Homeland Security would be involved all kinds of stuff. Where is Homeland Security?” Goldberg said. “This man, to me – This, I feel endangers the country. Our country, America. I don’t like this, I don’t like it, I don’t like what he’s done, I don’t like this whole last trip. I’m just saying.” she said.

Goldberg’s comments are the latest borderline hysterical outbursts to come from those horrified by Trump’s so-called “disloyalty to the US intelligence agencies”. Representative Steve Cohen (D-Tenn) on Monday wondered, “Where are our military folks? The Commander in Chief is in the hands of our enemy!”

His tweet was taken by some as a call for a coup against the president, although it is unclear what he meant. When a reporter queried whether Cohen meant, “Why aren’t members of the military sounding off on this?” he responded, “Of course.”

Homeland Season 7 Finale Recap: When Things Go Wrong, You Gotta Carrie On https://briefnews.eu/homeland-season-7-finale-recap-when-things-go-wrong-you-gotta-carrie-on/ https://briefnews.eu/homeland-season-7-finale-recap-when-things-go-wrong-you-gotta-carrie-on/#respond Mon, 30 Apr 2018 05:39:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/homeland-season-7-finale-recap-when-things-go-wrong-you-gotta-carrie-on/ Need to catch up? Check out our previous Homeland recap here.

Carrie and Saul’s plan to save Keane’s presidency took a sharp turn in Homeland‘s Season 7 finale… but then, it wouldn’t be a Homeland finale if everything went according to plan, would it?

We pick up where we left off, with Carrie posing as Simone in a brunette wig and hightailing it out of there with Anson at the wheel. He pulls over just short of the U.S. embassy, though, when police cars form a blockade to box them in. Carrie wants to distract them to give Saul time to put Simone on a plane back to D.C. to testify, so she ditches Anson’s car — “If things go wrong, this is the plan,” she tells him — and heads out on foot. When a Russian cop car starts to follow her, Anson hits the gas and smashes into the cop car head-on. Well, that certainly qualifies as a distraction.

Homeland Season 7 Finale SaulMeanwhile, Saul gathers his U.S. entourage to head home — with Simone stashed in the back of his van, sporting a very fetching blonde wig. (She should really try that look sometime when she’s not running for her life.) Saul gives her a passport with Carrie’s name on it to get out of the country, and Simone pointedly asks him: “You’re just going to leave her here?” Back at home, VP President Warner confronts Keane when he sees the chaos in Moscow on TV, and Keane tells him it’s because Simone is alive — and yeah, she admits she wasn’t too keen (ha!) on looping him in.
