DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has made an appointment with Dr. Strangelove, casting Body of Proof alum Nic Bishop in an homage to the dark 1964 feature comedy.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the English actor is set to guest-star on the CW series in a Season 6 riff on Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed satirization of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.

In the episode — which appears to be the upcoming season’s fourth, titled “Bay of Squids” —  Nate (played by Nick Zano) and Zari (Tala Ashe) must infiltrate the Kennedy White House to stop Bishop’s warmongering General Kilgore from steering JFK to start WWIII when an alien begins wreaking havoc in Fidel Castro’s Cuba in 1962.

Bishop’s character is likened to Dr. Strangelove‘s General Buck Turgidson, who was played by George C. Scott in the Kubrick film.

In addition to his aforementioned two-season run as Body of Proof‘s Peter Dunlop, Bishop’s many TV credits include, most recently, Apple TV+’s Truth Be Told, as well as Snowfall, Covert Affairs, Dominion and Home and Away. (I see that he also apparently is dating Legends star Jes Macallan, and thus would be within her safe COVID “bubble.”)

Legends of Tomorrow is among the CW series still awaiting a return date and which are penciled in for Spring 2021 or later.

Shovel Knight is one of my favorite indie games. IT manages to capture the magic of 8-bit classics like Mega Man and Castlevania with tight platforming and beautiful pixel graphics. The Messenger is accomplishing many of the same things, but it takes its inspiration from the Ninja Gaiden series for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The Messenger i…Read More

Kate Middleton news: Duchess of Cambridge pays homage to Princess Diana on royal tour https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-news-duchess-of-cambridge-pays-homage-to-princess-diana-on-royal-tour/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-news-duchess-of-cambridge-pays-homage-to-princess-diana-on-royal-tour/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 10:49:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-news-duchess-of-cambridge-pays-homage-to-princess-diana-on-royal-tour/

Kate Middleton, 36, stepped out in a daring red and white houndstooth check coat while on a tour of Sweden yesterday.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who is pregnant with her third child, was joined by her husband Prince William, 35, for a busy day with the Swedish royal family.

And Kate took the opportunity to make a statement with her Catherine Walker coat.

The coat was an echo of a jacket worn by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1990.

While Kate wore a full coat, Diana’s houndstooth item was a jacket, with a contrasting black and white houndstooth pencil skirt.

She wore the striking outfit while at Sandringham with Prince William seven years before her death in 1997.

Diana paired her outfit with a bold red and black hat and leather court shoes.

Kate, meanwhile, let the coat speak for itself, going bare on her head and choosing plain burgundy Chanel accessories.

Both women did wear pearl drop earrings to complete their outfits.

Kate has paid tribute to the mother-in-law she never got to meet many times before.

One of the most photographed women in the world today, Kate has made sure to look her best while on this latest royal tour.

Last night, she chose a blue floral Erdem dress for a reception where she met some of Sweden’s finest talent.

This was the second Erdem gown she wore during her first two days on tour, as she wore a floral floral-print silk crepe de Chine item on Tuesday.

Erdem is a Canadian-born designer recently also worn by Prince Harry’s fiancee Meghan Markle.

He is currently the front runner to design Meghan’s wedding dress.

Kate is a big fan of Erdem, especially on royal tours, and she first wore the label during the royal tour of Canada in 2011.

Family Guy EP Talks [Spoiler]'s Death, Explains 300th Episode's Homage to The Fast and the Furious https://briefnews.eu/family-guy-ep-talks-spoilers-death-explains-300th-episodes-homage-to-the-fast-and-the-furious/ https://briefnews.eu/family-guy-ep-talks-spoilers-death-explains-300th-episodes-homage-to-the-fast-and-the-furious/#respond Mon, 15 Jan 2018 04:52:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/family-guy-ep-talks-spoilers-death-explains-300th-episodes-homage-to-the-fast-and-the-furious/

Family Guy‘s 300th episode was, for lack of a better word, stuffed with drama.

After accidentally eating (most of) Rupert in a drunken stupor, Brian accompanied Stewie to Vermont to spread his beloved toy’s ashes, learning a lot about their relationship along the way — most notably that Stewie’s attachment to Rupert stemmed from a deep-seated insecurity that Brian wouldn’t always be there.

The milestone episode ended with Brian buying a new Rupert, which Stewie immediately believed — or chose to believe — was his original toy, back from the great beyond. “And in the world of stuffed animal spirits, can we say he’s wrong?” executive producer Rich Appel poses to TVLine. “Stewie is really the one who gave Rupert life, so their bond is going to be the same. It’ll be business as usual moving forward.”

Another recurring theme this week was the Fast and the Furious movies; the episode began with Stewie watching (and ranking) the series, then ended with Rupert driving off into the cosmos alongside the late Paul Walker. If you’re wondering where all of that came from…

“Cherry Chevapravatdumrong did a spectacular job writing this script, and  Stewie is really just channeling her,” Appel explains. “She is obsessed with that series, and the ranking Stewie goes through … she will fight to the death defending it. We, of course, didn’t alter her ranking or her rationale. But that was among many of the things she brought to the episode, a sincere knowledge and love of that series.”

He adds that Walker’s appearance was not meant to be a joke, but a “genuine” tribute to the actor and the series.

Justin Gatlin pays homage to Bolt at worlds https://briefnews.eu/justin-gatlin-pays-homage-to-bolt-at-worlds/ https://briefnews.eu/justin-gatlin-pays-homage-to-bolt-at-worlds/#respond Sun, 06 Aug 2017 05:05:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/justin-gatlin-pays-homage-to-bolt-at-worlds/

Years from now, Justin Gatlin will remember the bow more than the chorus of boos.

OK, so Gatlin may have ruined Usain Bolt’s going-away party with his surprise win in the 100 metres at the world championships on Saturday night. Gatlin still did his best to soften the blow by bowing down to third-place finisher Bolt on his way off the track — a way of telling the people he knows what the Jamaican great has done for his sport.

“I have nothing but respect for him,” said Gatlin, who, at 35, is five years Bolt’s senior. “Even with me being older than him, he’s such an inspiration for me.”

Gatlin was booed at almost every turn this week in London — during introductions, at any time when his face showed up on the big screen, and never louder than when his name popped up on the top of the scoreboard as the winner in Bolt’s farewell 100-metre race at the worlds.

By now, Gatlin is used to it. With his doping past — his suspension ended in 2010 — the American has long been portrayed as the bad guy set against Bolt’s charismatic, fun-loving personality.

Gatlin was initially banned for two years in 2001 after testing positive for amphetamines, which he took to treat attention deficit disorder since childhood. After an appeal, the IAAF lifted the ban.

In July 2006, Gatlin was suspended again after testing positive for testosterone. He denied using any performance-enhancing drugs, but agreed to an eight-year ban from track and field to avoid a lifetime ban in exchange for his cooperation with authorities. The ban was later reduced to four years, which he served before returning to competition in 2010.

He insisted he doesn’t care what anyone thinks and said all the boos were just background noise to him.

“I stayed focused on what I had to do,” Gatlin said. “I guess because I’ve become more of a rival for Usain, that’s where the booing comes from. I didn’t get booed throughout 2010. No boos in ’11, no boos in ’12, and ’12 was here [for the London Olympics]. Didn’t get boos in ’13, ’14 or ’15.

“Just to be able to come back, regardless of boos, I still heard cheers.”

‘I hurt for him’

They came from his support staff, his family, his friends.

“That’s all I cared about,” he said.

But about those friends — it sure is hard to be close to him and not be bothered by the hecklers.

“I felt a hurt for him,” his manager Renaldo Nehemiah said. “I didn’t say anything to him, but I hurt for him. It was noticeable, obviously. Then again, I also know Justin. He was going to use that in the right way.

“I said, ‘At the end of the day, Justin, no one can control what you do on the track. This is your world. It’s one lane, make the best of it.”‘

Mutual respect

And so he did. He was Olympic champion in 2004, four years before Bolt’s reign, and world champion in 2017, with Bolt on the way out. Gatlin even borrowed some of Bolt’s tactics, too, surging from behind with a fantastic finishing kick to overtake Bolt and Christian Coleman, a fellow University of Tennessee product and new silver medallist. Gatlin’s time, 9.92 seconds, wasn’t all that electric. But this was all about the win.

Bolt runs out of thunder in final 100m race at track world championships1:04

“It’s just so surreal right now,” Gatlin said. “Usain said, ‘Congratulations, you deserve it.’ And that’s from the man himself. He knows how hard I work.”

Bolt paid respect, too, and said the stereotypical casting of Gatlin as a villain has grown stale.

“He’s done his time and worked to be one of the best athletes,” Bolt said. “He’s one of the best competitors I’ve ever competed with. I know if I don’t show up, he’s always gonna win.”

Close call

Two years ago at worlds, it almost happened.

Gatlin made a tactical mistake in Beijing, going into his lean too early as Bolt won by 0.01 seconds. Hurtful as the loss was, an episode the next day during the medals ceremony was worse. Gatlin could be seen pointing toward the stands and chastising a fan. Turns out, that fan was heckling his mother.

Gatlin finished runner-up to Bolt at last year’s Olympics. Given the stakes for Bolt in London, this competition figured to be a race for second.

Turns out, there was more left in the tank for Gatlin, who says he has no immediate plans to retire and could be around for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

“I’m going to take it year by year and race by race,” Gatlin said. “I’ll see where it takes me.”

How Michael Giacchino’s ‘Rogue One’ Score Pays Homage to John Williams [Video Essay] https://briefnews.eu/how-michael-giacchinos-rogue-one-score-pays-homage-to-john-williams-video-essay/ https://briefnews.eu/how-michael-giacchinos-rogue-one-score-pays-homage-to-john-williams-video-essay/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 13:28:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-michael-giacchinos-rogue-one-score-pays-homage-to-john-williams-video-essay/ Rogue One score homages

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a grand experiment for Disney and Lucasfilm. The movie was meant to be a standalone adventure that has ties to the main Star Wars narrative without being part of the Skywalker saga. That’s why it has plenty in common aesthetically, as far as the production design and art direction is concerned, but still feels different from the rest of the Star Wars movies.

One of the ways Rogue One stands on its own is with the score composed by Michael Giacchino. He doesn’t use the main Star Wars theme prominently, mostly because the movie doesn’t have the traditional opening title and crawl. He also doesn’t go out of his way to frequently use the recognizable themes that John Williams composed for the original trilogy, which Rogue One most closely emulates. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t subtly use pieces of John Williams’ classc score when the story called for it.

A video essay explains the various Rogue One score homages below.

The early part of this video is mostly just an assembly of orchestral Easter eggs that can easily be noticed by Star Wars fans who love the music of John Williams. It’s the second half of the video where there are some fascinating observations regarding certain musical cues that Michael Giacchino made which more subtly reference lesser celebrated Star Wars compositions.

For me, the most interesting part of the video is how it breaks down the Rogue One theme to show that it’s a repurposed version of the classic Star Wars theme. But I also think the creator of the video makes an interesting point about that little flute cue representing a messenger in both A New Hope and Rogue One. As someone who didn’t fall in love with the Rogue One score, this made me appreciate the work that Michael Giacchino did a little bit more.

Extreme artist braves shark-infested waters to pay homage to Spanish wingsuit pioneer (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/extreme-artist-braves-shark-infested-waters-to-pay-homage-to-spanish-wingsuit-pioneer-video/ https://briefnews.eu/extreme-artist-braves-shark-infested-waters-to-pay-homage-to-spanish-wingsuit-pioneer-video/#respond Sun, 12 Mar 2017 21:38:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/extreme-artist-braves-shark-infested-waters-to-pay-homage-to-spanish-wingsuit-pioneer-video/

Catalan extreme artist Markus braved the shark-infested waters of Barcelona Aquarium to pay tribute to one of his heroes, extreme sports pioneer Alvaro Bultó in a visually stunning homage.

At 11am local time, Markus descended into the shark tank and began to paint the first of two such tributes to one of his lifelong heroes.

“The idea of doing the homage to Alvaro Bulto, is because I am an extreme artist and he was an extreme sportsman, so we are very linked in the subject of experiences and actions,” he told Ruptly TV.

Bulto, one of Spain’s best-known wingsuit pilots, broke multiple freefall records, was among the first people to parachute in the Antarctic and participated in base jumping throughout Spain.

“We are in the Aquarium of Barcelona to make this tribute among the sharks. Once this act is finished, I will give the painting to the Bulto family,” Markus added.

Bulto died in 2013 in the Swiss Alps in an apparent wingsuit accident. Markus has promised to donate the portraits to Bulto’s family.

The second of Markus’ tributes will take place Sunday evening as he engages in one of his signature performance pieces he describes as “painting the music.” Here he paints with ultraviolet paints under ultraviolet lights to music.

James Martin's galloc homage to his idol Keith Floyd https://briefnews.eu/james-martins-galloc-homage-to-his-idol-keith-floyd/ https://briefnews.eu/james-martins-galloc-homage-to-his-idol-keith-floyd/#respond Mon, 06 Feb 2017 01:42:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/james-martins-galloc-homage-to-his-idol-keith-floyd/

James Martin will be taking a vintage car to France as part of his french adventures showITV/GETTY

TV Chef James Martin will be taking a vintage car to France as part of his french adventures show

Step forward James Martin, both channelling the spirit and driving the 2CV car of the late ebullient, wine-quaffing, Francophile TV chef Keith Floyd, his great culinary hero.

His latest venture, James Martin’s French Adventure, also harks back to James’s childhood visits and holidays to France in the company of his father Ian, a pig farmer who also imported wine.

Shown on weekdays at 3pm on ITV, the series is a celebration of the France and its food that James has known for much of his life.

Indeed, aged just 12, James accompanied his father on a winebuying trip to Saint-Emilion in south-western France and ended up working there as a teenager in a local Michelin-starred restaurant.

“From that exact moment I wanted to be a chef,” he said in an interview last week. “There was a complete lunatic French chef throwing things at you . I thought, ‘This is fantastic. This is what I want to do.’ ”

And that is what he did, although James, much like his near namesake Jamie Oliver, was pitched into a brand new career when he was spotted by chance by a television producer in the restaurant where he worked .

In both cases a stellar small screen career ensued. But in many other ways the two men differed enormously. Jamie, the family man, married his childhood sweetheart Jools, began producing children, took on a campaigning role about food health and made a series of differently themed television programmes.

Ladykiller James, meanwhile, built up a huge collection of vintage cars, including Floyd’s 2CV and toiled for 10 long years on weekly BBC live cookery show Saturday Kitchen until last year.

He attended catering college in Scarborough, Yorkshire near his native Malton and learned his trade at two of London’s most prestigious restaurants, Anthony Worrall Thompson’s 190 Queen’s Gate and Marco Pierre White’s Harvey’s, Aged 44, James has never married.

His best known relationship to date was with James Bond film producer Barbara Broccoli, who was 12 years older than him. They met in 2001 when she bid £18,000 for him to cook for her at a charity auction .

During the ensuing four -year relationship, Barbara gave him three Picassos and offered him an Aston Martin DBS, chassis number 007, worth £180,000.

James fan of Keith FloydBBC

James had been a fan of Floyd since the age of 11 and bought his old Citroen car

These details later emerged in James’s autobiography but Barbara’s furious reaction, involving calls to lawyers, had James vowing never to be so open about his romantic relationships again. Perhaps it was that experience that led him to declare a year ago that he was not after a wife and family – “No and it’s fine” – and that his priority was his mum.

“What more can you do than have a home, have security and, for me especially, earn enough money to look after my mother?” he asked the Radio Times. But it subsequently emerged that he is actually in a long -term relationship with glamorous PA Louise Davies, whom he met in 2011 when he appeared on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with his friend Chris Evans.

The pair now live together and have a dog called Ralph and a puppy, Cooper . There is even talk of children.

“James desperately wants to keep his private life out of the spotlight and under wraps following his romance with Barbara,” a friend told another newspaper last year.

“It’s easy to do with Louise as she likes things low-key as well, unlike Barbara, who loved making a fuss over him. “Louise goes absolutely everywhere with him – they just don’t make a big song and dance about it.

Amid his adventure, James built up a huge collection of vintage cars including Floyd’s 2CV ITV

She knows all his friends really well and regularly visited him on The Saturday Kitchen set and was on set for James’s ASDA commercials so all his colleagues get on well with her too.

“She’s particularly good friends with his best mate Chris Evans’s wife, Natasha. Louise really is a girl after James’ heart. “They bonded over their mutual love of cars.” So could it be that at long last James is preparing to settle down?

Born in 1972, James’ big break came in 1996 when he was head chef at the Hotel du Vin in Winchester and a television producer asked him to take a screen test. A hugely successful career in television ensued.

He was also named as the most eligible bachelor in Britain, at which point women started writing in in their droves. James’s sous chefs sorted them into piles headed “bin”, “rough” and “possibly” .

“They were writing back to the ones that didn’t send pictures, pretending to be me and asking them to send a photograph of themselves on a beach. I remember going ballistic,” he said in the interview last week.

“They’re all in my loft now, so when I’m old and grey I can look at them all.”

JAMES has appeared on numerous television programmes in the intervening years, such as Ready Steady Cook, but is probably best known for his role hosting Saturday Kitchen.

He decided to step away from it, however, after a stranger – larger than life Dubai media boss Dominic De Sousa – had a suspected heart attack and died on stage in front of him while De Sousa was hosting a BBC Good Food Awards event in the Middle Eastern city in 2015.

James realised that he may have been pushing himself too hard and risked a similar fate. “That was over a year ago and that was the decision to change,” he told ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

“I look back at all the work I’d done – four days off that year and fi ve the year before – and I thought something’s got to change.” Since then there has been much speculation about what James would do next, with his name c roping up regularly in the frame for Top Gear – James owns about 14 classic cars – and a new version of Bake Off .

He has also stood in for Phillip Schofi eld and Holly Willoughby on This Morning. But it was his purchase of Keith Floyd’s motor that prompted the latest project .

After the death of her father, Floyd’s daughter Poppy contacted James to see if he would like to buy it. “That was Friday,” said James. “The next day I did Saturday Kitchen, drove over to France on Saturday afternoon to pick it up and on Monday it was in my garage.”

The new show owes more than just the car to the spirit of Floyd, whom James had idolised after meeting him at a dinner at the age of 11 and thinking: “I want to be like that.”

Charging around the country lanes of France, James pitches up in one agreeable spot after another to prepare the local speciality, washed down, of course, with buckets of wine.

The series also pays homage to the culinary TV trip Floyd – who died in 2009 aged 65 – himself took 30 years ago for his series Floyd On France.

A new show, a more laid-back life and the prospect of starting a family into the bargain. Life’s menu is clearly a rich one for James.

30,000 motorcycle-riding Catholics are paying homage to Guatemala’s ‘Black Christ’ https://briefnews.eu/30000-motorcycle-riding-catholics-are-paying-homage-to-guatemalas-black-christ/ https://briefnews.eu/30000-motorcycle-riding-catholics-are-paying-homage-to-guatemalas-black-christ/#respond Sun, 05 Feb 2017 07:16:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/30000-motorcycle-riding-catholics-are-paying-homage-to-guatemalas-black-christ/ Guatemala Catholic motorcycle pilgram Black Christ(AP Photo/Moises Castillo)

Guatemala City (AFP) – Some 30,000 motorcycle-riding Catholics left the Guatemalan capital Saturday on a pilgrimage to the eastern city of Esquipulas to venerate the so-called Black Christ.

The 140-mile (222-kilometer) journey ends with the devout paying homage to the Black Christ, an aged wooden likeness of Jesus grown dark over centuries.

The image is worshiped by Guatemalans, other Central Americans and some Mexicans.

The first such ride took place in 1961, when a motorcyclist and fervent believer in the powers of the Black Christ — one Ruben Villadeleon, nicknamed “Zorro” — took the ride with a handful of friends.

The shrine and the city attract a huge influx of pilgrims and tourists every year.

President Jimmy Morales gave the signal to start this year’s motorized pilgrimage. Participants left from Guatemala City’s Central Plaza for Esquipulas, which Pope John Paul II declared in 1996 to be the “Central American Capital of Faith.”

Organizers of the Caravan set up four stops along the way for riders needing refreshments or mechanical assistance, seven check-in points and four rest stops. Most of the riders were planning to return home on Sunday.

Although the voyage began as a family tradition, most participants now are messengers or collection agents — among other professions that use motorcycles — who travel east in hopes of receiving divine favors.

Dozens of people don costumes for the ride. This year one dressed as US President Donald Trump and another as his predecessor Barack Obama, according to photos in the local press.

In 2015, organizers attempted to set a Guinness record for the largest motorcycle caravan in the world, but failed to meet all of Guinness’s requirements.

Guatemala gave the caravan national-heritage status in 2011 due to its huge popularity.
