Last Man Standing won’t shy away from hot-button issues in 2020. As it enters its eighth season (its second on Fox), the Tim Allen comedy will delve into politics and religion in ways that it has not done before — and in ways that have the potential to permanently alter dynamics within the Baxter family. Ahead of the double-episode premiere (Thursday at 8/7c), TVLine spoke with executive producer Kevin Abbott and series star Molly McCook (aka Mandy No. 2) about what’s coming up in the new year. MIKE & VANESSA | Mr. and Mrs. Baxter will enter a new phase of their lives as empty-nesters. “It kind of changes everything,” Abbott tells TVLine. “We play on the fact that there are no longer any children in the house throughout the first 10 or 11 episodes.” The premiere is “ultimately about a lack of communication brought on by physical distance,” and Mike’s efforts to remedy that distance to appease Vanessa. While Mike fixes cars, Vanessa will take stock of her own booming business. “She discovers that her tutoring business is thriving because the educational system is failing… and she decides to run for [State Assembly],” Abbott reveals. “We always talk a little bit about politics on the show, so it’s a way for us to introduce some subject matter without being too partisan and too issue-oriented.” KRISTIN & RYAN | In the premiere, Mike invites Kristin, Mandy and Eve over for dinner, where Kristin reveals that — Spoiler alert! — she’s pregnant. The storyline was dictated by portrayer Amanda Fuller’s real-life pregnancy, and Abbott’s desire not to try and write around it. “I’ve been on enough shows where you try to hide it, and it really doesn’t work too well,” he says. (Fuller gave birth to her first child in November.) MANDY & KYLE | While Mike and Vanessa are ecstatic for Kristin and Ryan, Mandy has mixed feelings about her sister’s pregnancy. “She’s dealing with a little bit of jealousy and a little bit of FOMO,” McCook tells TVLine. “Last season, we found out that Mandy and Kyle were having some ‘technical issues’ with trying to get pregnant… She’s happy for Kristin, but she’s hoping for kids herself, and it seems like her sister is having no trouble popping out babies.” As for Kyle, he’ll be considering a major life change, which was first hinted at in Season 7. “We have him contemplating going into ministry,” Abbott reveals. “He’s a religious character, which you don’t really see a lot of on TV. We’ve always referred to him as a ‘pure character’ and a ‘pure spirit,’ and we kind of like that notion of him seeing if there’s a calling to do more with his life.” Should he go that route, the series will explore the impact that has on Mandy, and whether she’s fully on board with her husband’s divine decision. “She always worries when Kyle tells her about some change or some new idea that she’s not one-hundred percent [on board] with,” McCook adds, “but she always trusts him and only wants him to be happy.” Last Man Standing Season 8 will kick off with three weeks of back-to-back originals, beginning Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c, on Fox. The trailer for Three Identical Strangers Filmmaker Tim Wardle released it in 2018, but the documentary Three Identical Strangers feels appropriately of its ’80s era. Yes, it has the outfits and the crappy cars, but the film’s first hour in particular has the kind of goofy buddy-movie feel that feels so cozy, you’d swear it was ripped out of fiction like Goonies or Ghostbusters. These three guys just shy of 20—Bobby, David, and Eddy—recount their perspective on a gradually unraveling mystery involving each of them. It starts when Bobby goes to his first day of community college, and everyone seems to greet him as if they’re old best friends. Then, Eddy’s actual best friend recognizes the confusion on this seemingly familiar face and asks: you don’t have a relative named Eddy, do you? Maybe you see where this is going and can already imagine the headlines (or Donahue or Today Show appearances). But Three Identical Strangers continues to play theaters today—and will air on CNN this Saturday, February 2—because the film has so much more to offer than a feel-good tale of lost siblings serendipitously finding each other. The documentary doesn’t hide any supernatural elements like Goonies or Ghostbusters, but something otherworldly may or may not be happening.RELATED STORIES
Episode 2 will beget a larger discussion about how Mike and Vanessa plan to spend their free time: “If part of your purpose every day is taking care of these people in the house, and that responsibility goes away, how do you react to that? Is it freeing, or is it somehow a loss?” Rather than sit around and twiddle his thumbs, Mike decides to go into business with Chuck — but their plan to open a classic car renovation service crashes when Joe (recurring guest star Jay Leno) is invited to join in. “There’s a fun little story that spins out from that,” Abbott says.
Another episode will find “Kristin and the entire family delighting in the fact that this time around, they actually get to walk into church and say, ‘Hey, we’re pregnant!’ because she’s married and she’s got a career, as opposed to the first time [when she was a teenager and had Boyd out of wedlock],” Abbott says. And unlike her first pregnancy, Ryan is actively involved, which the EP says “absolutely comes into play” — the idea of “what it’s like this time versus what it was like last time” Kristin was having a baby, “and just how different it is — both in good and bad ways.”
While Mandy and Kyle’s family planning will factor into Season 8, their careers also will play a big role this year. “Mandy is now fully working at Outdoor Man with everyone,” McCook says. “It’s fun to see her in that environment because she doesn’t quite fit in, but she’s putting her ‘Mandy sparkle’ on everything that she’s doing,” including her new athleisure line.

Like bathing in the sun for phototherapy, being blasted with water in an enormous tub, attending lectures on the evils of spicy food, getting jolted by electricity to stimulate muscles or having an enema if they were feeling down. Kellogg’s therapies were all part of his mission to restore the physical and spiritual health of America. The biggest challenge, as he saw it? Curing America’s biggest so-called sin: masturbation. Kellogg believed a clean diet brought one closer to God, so he focused his handiwork on the creation of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.
The crunchy breakfast cereal was invented in the late 1800s and quickly become known for being high in fiber but low on taste — a perfect cornerstone for Kellogg’s governing philosophy on “biologic living.” Back then, the United States was not a healthy place: The very small food pyramid for the average American involved a lot of meat, fat and alcohol. Indigestion ran rampant, and a health movement arose to fight for America’s moral and dietary fiber. Don Scherencel, director of the Historic Adventist Village, home to the Dr. John Kellogg Discovery Center, says Kellogg never saw a healthy colon in all his years performing surgeries. “Everybody came to Battle Creek because their body wasn’t healthy, and [Kellogg] was there to help.”
There were 101 cereal companies founded right here, because if it said Battle Creek on the box, then it had to be healthy.
Don Scherencel
For Kellogg, diet and disposition were intrinsically linked, and he believed that moral degradation and the desire to consume heavily spiced foods was a vicious cycle — one that would eventually leave humans physically and morally bankrupt. “Highly seasoned [meats], stimulating sauces … and dainty tidbits in endless variety, irritate [the] nerves and … react upon the sexual organs,” he wrote in Plain Facts for Young and Old. Simply put, the road to hell was paved with dipping sauce.
The solution? Instead of a diet based in animal fats and white starches, Kellogg promoted simpler foods — fiber and whole carbohydrates (cue an era that saw the birth of graham crackers and granola). And his contribution to cereal goodness was a simple, high-fiber alternative devoid of variety, sugar or any other “dainty tidbits” that might react with the sex organs. Simply put, in order to stop the moral decay plaguing America, Kellogg had to get men’s hands out of their pants and into cereal boxes.
Kellogg’s link between morality and diet is not an enormous surprise given that he was a staunch Seventh-day Adventist, a religious movement that started in 1860 and preached strict adherence to vegetarianism and biblical dietary rules. The socially conservative group valued abstinence, other than in the pursuit of babies. Overachiever that Kellogg was, he reportedly abstained from sexual intercourse with his own wife, opting instead to adopt children.

Beliefs aside, Kellogg’s sanitarium did manage to make people feel better. “If it didn’t work, Battle Creek Sanitarium wouldn’t have continued to grow,” Scherencel explains. Famous personalities like Mary Todd Lincoln, Sojourner Truth and Thomas Edison sought Kellogg’s therapies, and the Michigan institution soon became the place to be for resurrecting one’s physical and spiritual well-being at the turn of the last century.
But even more people were desperate to get their hands on Kellogg’s corn flake cereal. This was not just a function of the American desire to start their day with a belly full of fiber; the industrial revolution meant that more people were living in city centers and leaving their houses early for work. In those changing times, convenience became king to American consumers, and cereal was a fast, easy breakfast for people heading to work.
Kellogg began traveling the country and giving lectures on his therapies as an opportunity to spread his gospel of high fiber and biologic living. But Kellogg seemed to care more about his clean-living message than product sales. He went so far as to give his recipe for corn flakes away during his lectures, which led to a number of knockoffs but — unsurprisingly — no noticeable decline in sexual activity. C.W. Post, a former patient of Kellogg and founder of Post Cereals, took the recipe and ran, creating similar high-fiber cereals with added sugar (and minus the sanctimony). “At one point, Battle Creek was known as health city. There were 101 cereal companies founded right here, because if it said Battle Creek on the box, then it had to be healthy,” says Scherencel.
Meanwhile, Kellogg’s brother, Will Kellogg, who was employed as a bookkeeper at the sanitarium, had his hand deep in the cereal box — looking for a profit. While John Harvey Kellogg invented the cereal, his own brother undermined him by founding the Kellogg Company and marketing it to the world. And to add insult to injury, Will Kellogg committed the cardinal sin of adding sugar to the original Kellogg recipe, thus endangering the souls of customers in the most delicious way. The added sugar and stolen recipe were enough to lock the brothers in a brutal feud that lasted for years.
John Harvey Kellogg preached that bland eating was the path to spiritual enlightenment and physical well-being, but ultimately convenience and great taste won out over his moral crusade. And while his brother went on to grow Kellogg Cereals into the breakfast staple it is today, the doctor continued caring for the spiritual and physical well-being of his patients in Battle Creek to his dying day.

After returning from the mission, Wyatt learns that Jessica’s sick brother survived in this timeline. Naturally, Wyatt is suspicious of how that’s possible — his wife says something about stem cells — and who paid for the treatment. He then asks Jessica if there’s something she’s not telling him, to which she replies, “Yeah, there is. I’m pregnant.” What?! Assuming she’s telling the truth, isn’t the Wyatt/Jessica/Lucy triangle complicated enough without adding this twist to it? Or do you think she’s lying to distract Wyatt from her sleeper agent ways?
First things first: As the headline suggests, I am not OK with how and why Elena and Jemma pulled a fast (and rather dark) one on Mack, in the name of freeing Fitz. It was wrong, it was icky and it involved the betrayal of an otherwise very good man — perhaps the best man S.H.I.E.L.D. currently employs. Presumably (almost) all will be forgiven once the ladies and Fitz return from their own mission to find Coulson and thwart Hale, but two wrongs don’t make a right. This was borderline Arrow/OTA vs. NTA infighting. (Yes, I said it.)
As for what else went down this week: now in possession of alllll the gravitonium, Hale had Carl “test” it out by touching it, presumably to infuse his own cells, and all while Ruby looked on, fretting that she would be replaced as Destroyer of Worlds. As it turned out, Carl’s encounter with the gravitonium was an excruciating one, as the oscillating goo attempted to infuse him, and at the very least left him with intermittent, haunting flashes of when Dr. Franklin Hall involuntarily merged with the goo in Season 1, Episode 3.
Carl later paid a visit to Coulson’s cell, where he learned that General Talbot was not being “treated” by Hale but being tortured. After beheading the mech guarding Coulson’s room, Carl and Coulson ventured to a remote corner of the compound, in search of Talbot. Once they found the addled general, the three made tracks for the nearest exit only to bump into suited-up, Chakram-wielding Ruby. Carl slugged it out with the lethal lass (in an excellent sequence of fight choreography/seamless doubling), while Coulson and Talbot wound up on the room with the Chitauri device, which Coulson activated to transport them to… a snowy somewhere.
Elsewhere, Daisy had the Zephyr swing by to pick up Robin and her mother, only to learn the young seer has not scribbled a single thing since… drawing a picture of her own death, as an old woman, in May’s arms. Upon hearing Robin call May “Mom,” the tyke’s actual mother confirmed that she is fated to die (as you know, we all are). After being comforted by May, Robin managed to crank out some fresh art — of two men (Coulson and a bedraggled Talbot) standing in the snow, with three mountain peaks in the distance.
Back at the Lighthouse is where the aforementioned betrayal played out, with Yo-Yo and Jemma anxious to free Fitz, so that he might track down the Hydra tech that Hale needs to make her weapon. Daisy (whom Deke twice noted has become a “hard-ass” ever since being put in charge) had in turn left Mack in charge in her absence, and he refused to hear the ladies out. They therefore staged a “demonstration” of Jemma’s invincibility that led to her “accidental” “poisoning,” forcing Mack to spring Fitz — at which instant Yo-Yo shoved her beau into the locked room. Again — so not cool.
Anyway… this week’s tag took us back to a “lost” scene from the Season 1 finale. Previously, Raina had secured John Garrett’s OK to turn the gravitonium glob over to industrialist/scientist Ian Quinn, which they then transported away in the back of a van. In this new continuation, we see Ian express his gratitude for being given the gravitonium — except, Raina announces, he is mistaken. No, the Dr. Hall-infused goo asked for him. At which point she unlocks the crate, allowing the metallic goo to attack and consume Ian.

“It’s not as good a response as Chrissy Teigen’s,” Dulude says, still chuckling as he notes that, hey, any buzz about the role he and his team of 15 artists played in the live musical is welcome.
Dulude is a busy guy — one of his next big projects is the upcoming revival of Broadway’s Torch Song Trilogy — so while we had him on the phone, of course we wanted to know more about the disciples’ distinctive body art. Read on for his thoughts about:
THE ORIGIN OF THE INK| Dulude collaborated with Superstar costume designer Paul Tazewell on the tattoos’ overall look; in all, there were about 25 different designs. “He sent me one image of someone who had a solid armband, and he had a line that was coming down from it. That just pushed me right into the right direction, where I started thinking about sacred geometry and the spirituality of what the piece is about,” the makeup designer says. “Everything was shapes: rectangles or triangles or circles or lines combined into these designs.” The images were made into temporary tattoos applied to the actors before the show. “Lots of things were done in threes to represent the holy trinity,” he adds. “There’s one that’s sort of a modern interpretation of stained glass.”
HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE| Erik Grönwall, who played Simon Zealotes, wore Dulude’s favorite design: a sprawling tattoo that started on his mohawked head and spilled down onto his shoulders and arm. “It was like the arches of a church,” says Dulude. “There’s a really fine beauty to it.” Apparently, Grönwall was an instant fan. “Erik, he was all for it,” Dulude recalls. “When we did his tattoo test, he just wore it for days. He never took it off. He was so excited. He was like, ‘I may think about getting this!’”

Seeing our planet from space is a rare treat: Fewer than 540 people have ever left the Earth.
Seven astronauts who’ve blasted off from our planet with NASA came together this week for the premiere of the National Geographic series One Strange Rock. The show, produced by Darren Aronofsky, takes an up-close look at how life on Earth works from a range of perspectives: it juxtaposes macro views of the planet from space with micro-shots of some of the tiniest oxygen-producing organisms, which are four times thinner than a human hair.
Aronofsky said the program aims to show off “the beautiful clockwork” of the Earth. “It’s much more complicated than anything a human could conceive of,” he said.
The astronauts featured in the series said that leaving the Earth changed how they see our world in remarkable ways. Some gained a different kind of understanding of the science they were taught as kids, while others gained an appreciation for the fact that we don’t have to recycle our urine to make coffee here.
The seven astronauts sat down to chat with us about what going to space is really like. Here’s what they had to say:
NASA
But one common theme emerged: being in space gives astronauts a chance to connect to their home in a whole new way.

Black Panther, Creed director Ryan Coogler’s contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, capitalized on deafening buzz, cultural relevance, and rave reviews to capture one of the largest opening weekends in movie history. According to Box Office Mojo, the picture delivered an estimated $ 201.7 million from Friday to Sunday; that makes it one of only five movies to cross the $ 200 million in its first three days (after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World, and the first Avengers). Throw in another $ 34 million thanks to the Presidents Day holiday, and you’ve got the third highest four-day gross of all time.
If you’d like to put that into comic book movie perspective: A film featuring Black Panther, a character basically introduced to general (i.e., non-comic-book-reading) moviegoers in Captain America: Civil War less than two years ago, grossed more in its first four days than Justice League – which featured nearly every iconic DC character, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash – has made in its entire run.
Now, a case could be made that Disney – an arguably evil empire whose choke hold on mass culture is already worrisomely gigantic and only poised to grow – making a yet another shitload of money is far from cause for celebration and y’know what, yes, this is true. But here are your counterpoints:
1) For decades, the financing of films by and about people of color has been hedged by the pernicious falsehood that those films don’t perform commercially overseas (where, more of then than not, the money is made these days). It’s a bullshit excuse, fueled by racism, fear, and love for the staus quo, and it’s been proven false time and timeagain. Can we finally lay it to rest?
2) Ryan Coogler is one of the most talented filmmakers of his generation, and a Ryan Coogler movie making bank is an unalloyed good. It buys him several years of making whatever he wants to make, and so far, everything he’s wanted to make has killed.
3) On the heels of last year’s massive success for Wonder Woman, the takeaway is clear for studios: for as long as we can remember, the common wisdom has held that blockbusters required white, male protagonists. Those days are over. Catch up.

Some high-end professional Mac users are frustrated, and they have been for years.
The current Mac Pro received a lukewarm reception when it began shipping in 2013, and it has been preserved in amber ever since. The MacBook Pro went with few substantial updates for a long period of time after 2012. And when Apple overhauled its video editing software and released Final Cut Pro X in 2011, many editors were turned off by its compromises.
