Amy Winehouse will return to the stage in 2019 as the latest in a long line of deceased performers resurrected as holograms. The digital ghost of Winehouse (who died in 2011) will perform her hits such a “Rehab” and “Valerie” while backed by a live band. The tour is a product of a partnership between LA-based BASE Hologram and the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which raises money for the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse.

Hologram tours are, of course, not at all unprecedented, as many will recall the holographic Tupac performance at Coachella in 2012 which opened a floodgate of post-death holographic musical performances. Artists such as Biggie Smalls, Whitney Houston, and even comedians Andy Kaufman and Redd Fox have performed as holograms. It’s a trend that shows no sign of ceasing. In fact, BASE Hologram currently runs Roy Orbison: In Dreams and Callas In Concert featuring opera legend Maria Callas who died in 1977.

Amy Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, said, “Our daughter’s music touched the lives of millions of people and it means everything that her legacy will continue in this innovative and groundbreaking way.” Tickets for the tour have not yet been released, but updates can be found on BASE Hologram’s website.

SK Telecom will demo 5G social VR, self-driving cars, and hologram AI at MWC 2018 https://briefnews.eu/sk-telecom-will-demo-5g-social-vr-self-driving-cars-and-hologram-ai-at-mwc-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/sk-telecom-will-demo-5g-social-vr-self-driving-cars-and-hologram-ai-at-mwc-2018/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2018 16:57:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sk-telecom-will-demo-5g-social-vr-self-driving-cars-and-hologram-ai-at-mwc-2018/

South Korea’s largest mobile provider SK Telecom announced today that it will debut “social virtual reality” and multiple 5G demonstrations, including “hologram AI,” at its 2018 Mobile World Congress booth next week, letting attendees see how high-speed 5G wireless will bring new experiences to everyday life. The demos will run from February 26 to March 1 in Barcelona, Spain.

Illustrating the gulf between 4G and 5G speeds, SK Telecom will show how virtual reality improvements will evolve its existing Oksusu service, which lets Korean users chat while watching videos together. Oksusu Social VR will use Samsung’s Gear VR and Google Daydream to display 80-inch-equivalent 1080p TV screens alongside virtual avatars of users and their friends, including body movements and facial expressions. Users of the 4G VR service will be able to watch and comment upon movies, League of Legends games, concerts, and sports as if they’re watching the content together on a TV.

By comparison, the 5G version of Oksusu Social VR will include 8K videos with 16 times as much detail as the 4G version, as well as the ability to be instantaneously streamed live from far-off cities, making users feel as if they’re actually visiting foreign destinations and attending concerts. SK Telecom explains that this sort of real-time VR is not feasible over 4G because of the limited speeds of existing networks but will be possible over 5G.

The carrier will also show off real-time 5G data streaming, 4G and 5G simultaneous streaming over separate radio frequency bands, and autonomous 5G car tests revealed earlier this month — 3D HD mapping, cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communications, and a 5G self-driving car.

Intriguingly, SK Telecom also promises Mobile World Congress visitors “a glimpse of the future of AI” in the form of “hologram AI.” Without providing specifics, the carrier claims that hologram AI offers the opportunity for “mankind to have a completely new mobile communications experience.”

Last April, rival carrier KT conducted the world’s “first 5G live hologram call” with Verizon, wherein a Verizon employee appeared as a hologram on a monitor at KT headquarters. KT said at the time that commercial 5G networks will enable life-sized real-time hologram meetings between people, and SK Telecom has similarly suggested that holograms will be a major new benefit of 5G.

Jon Hamm Plays a Lovable Hologram in Trailer for Intimate Sci-Fi Drama ‘Marjorie Prime’ https://briefnews.eu/jon-hamm-plays-a-lovable-hologram-in-trailer-for-intimate-sci-fi-drama-marjorie-prime/ https://briefnews.eu/jon-hamm-plays-a-lovable-hologram-in-trailer-for-intimate-sci-fi-drama-marjorie-prime/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2017 20:22:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jon-hamm-plays-a-lovable-hologram-in-trailer-for-intimate-sci-fi-drama-marjorie-prime/ Marjorie Prime — the film in which Jon Hamm stars as a fleshy-looking and emotive hologram — has a just-released trailer, which premiered today on Entertainment Weekly, and can be watched below.

Hamm stars alongside 86-year-old actress Lois Smith, Geena Davis, and Tim Robbins. Smith plays Marjorie, a widow who’s now…sort of being rejoined late in life by her husband — to the extent that an A.I.-boosted hologram can be a husband. (The movie seems to form an arc that leads to viewers questioning what exactly differentiates a technologically created, seemingly sentient and emotive you, me, or Jon Hamm from a “real” you, me, or Jon Hamm. Thus, not thematically dissimilar to, well, most A.I. movies.)

In terms intimate, romance-deconstructing/reconstructing sci-fi, it looks like it shares a lot with both Her and the arresting “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror, both of which hinge on the liberating recognition of intimacy as collaborative projection. The film is based on a Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by Jordan Harrison, which also starred Lois Smith in the same role.

Flavorwire Film Editor Jason Bailey caught the film at Sundance, and wrote:

It’s a movie of ideas rather than effects, which make for the best science fiction anyway. It asks big questions, about the nature of memory, how we choose to consider those we love, how we choose to handle our own grief… The antiseptic settings and anthropological approach (as well as the slightly off-putting photography, which seems weirdly cheap and garish) can keep the viewer at a distance. But those who can tune in to its wavelength will find it strangely satisfying.

Marjorie Prime will be out in New York and L.A. on August 18, but the hologram Jon Hamms will appear in theaters throughout the country in the following weeks. Watch the trailer:

Halo Fan Turns Microsoft's Cortana Into Actual Hologram https://briefnews.eu/halo-fan-turns-microsofts-cortana-into-actual-hologram/ https://briefnews.eu/halo-fan-turns-microsofts-cortana-into-actual-hologram/#respond Thu, 11 May 2017 20:51:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/halo-fan-turns-microsofts-cortana-into-actual-hologram/

Usually, Cortana the personal assistant is just a disembodied voice. One Halo fan decided to take his Cortana to the next level by building a rad hologram appliance that responds to your queries.

The whole thing is still a work in progress, creator Jarem “untitled network” Archer says, but it’s still pretty cool to watch it in action:

The animations were built with a Unity 3D app, while the lights controlled by a built-in Arduino. The device can also track your face, so Cortana is always looking in the right direction.

How long until Microsoft also goes the hologram route for Cortana, you think?

David Attenborough’s hologram will help you study fossils in VR https://briefnews.eu/david-attenboroughs-hologram-will-help-you-study-fossils-in-vr/ https://briefnews.eu/david-attenboroughs-hologram-will-help-you-study-fossils-in-vr/#respond Thu, 20 Apr 2017 09:23:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-attenboroughs-hologram-will-help-you-study-fossils-in-vr/

Sir David Attenborough is no stranger to VR. The beloved naturalist and TV presenter has worked on immersive, look-where-you-like films for the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London, the American Museum of Natural History and Google. Now, the documentarian is teaming up with Sky and the NHM for a new experience called Hold the World, which allows you to pick up fossils and other rate objects. As you turn them over, a “hologram” of Attenborough will pop up and explain their importance.

Sky is working with VR and “immersive content production studio” Factory 42 on the project, as well as Dream Reality Interactive and Talesmith. A teaser image released by Sky (above) shows Attenborough with an Oculus Rift and Touch controller, however Dan Smith, cofounder and creative director at Factory 42, said it could work on “several” different headsets.

Attenborough will be shot using ‘volumetric capture,’ a VR filmmaking technique that uses over 100 cameras, pointing inwards, to record a person and their movement in 3D space. The approach allows developers to blend an actor’s likeness with video game-style environments other visual effects. Smith said Hold the World will take place in the NHM’s “beautiful backrooms,” which will be captured using photogrammetry, a combination of LIDAR (a laser-based equivalent of radar) and 360-degree photography. The objects, which include bones and skulls, will be recreated in a similar fashion, combining photogrammetry with some 3D modelling work.

Hold the World will go into production later this year, and there’s no word on when the experience will be ready for the public. “We are always looking for innovative ways to share our collection, and Hold the World offers the chance to explore it as never before,” Sir Michael Dixon, director of the NHM said. “Objects in the museum collection offer invaluable insight about the origins of life, the Earth and our solar system – stories that are key to understanding how we can best protect our planet’s future.”

Stephen Hawking appears at conference via hologram, discusses Trump (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/stephen-hawking-appears-at-conference-via-hologram-discusses-trump-video/ https://briefnews.eu/stephen-hawking-appears-at-conference-via-hologram-discusses-trump-video/#respond Sat, 25 Mar 2017 17:00:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stephen-hawking-appears-at-conference-via-hologram-discusses-trump-video/

World renowned physicist Stephen Hawking appeared via hologram at a conference in Hong Kong, and had some interesting things to say about the rise of US President Donald Trump.

“Can you hear me?” Hawking asked the audience in his iconic computerized voice. “Yes!” came the enthusiastic response from hundreds of people gathered for the event in the Hong Kong Science Park.

In a speech that went on for more than an hour, the 75-year-old discussed a wide range of topics, including Brexit, Donald Trump, life on other planets, and his life and research, Global Times reports.

Striking a dour note, Hawking expressed his belief that the election of Donald Trump was part of a series of “right-wing successes” which could imperil the future of scientific research.

“With Brexit and Trump… we are witnessing a global revolt against experts,” the British scientist said, as cited by AFP.

The cosmologist and physicist, who gained acclaim for his study of black holes and theories on gravity, said the resurgence in right wing political ideas comes as the world is facing numerous environmental challenges. “The answers to these problems will come from science and technology,” he suggested.

Barbie Hello Hologram is a tiny virtual friend for girls https://briefnews.eu/barbie-hello-hologram-is-a-tiny-virtual-friend-for-girls/ https://briefnews.eu/barbie-hello-hologram-is-a-tiny-virtual-friend-for-girls/#respond Sun, 19 Feb 2017 12:14:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barbie-hello-hologram-is-a-tiny-virtual-friend-for-girls/

Smart home speakers like the Echo and Google Home can tell you the weather, play music and look up stuff for you. However, they stop short of attaching a face to those actions, and certainly don’t have any sense of sartorial style. Mattel’s latest creation, the Barbie Hello Hologram, rectifies that by placing the iconic doll into her own tiny holographic world and letting children talk to her directly. She can chat about the weather, crack corny jokes and even dance. Barbie can dab with the best of them.

This isn’t in the same category as the smart speaker that Mattel introduced back at CES. The Aristotle is essentially a caretaker for your child, starting out as a baby monitor and growing up with the child to serve such functions as a night light and storyteller. The Hello Hologram is more of a friend. She doesn’t control anything and can’t order from your favorite shopping site — a relief to parents, for sure. What she can do is answer simple questions, keep a calendar and even change her looks. That means not just her clothes, but also her hair and skin tone for a truly personalized play experience. The demo on display at Toy Fair only had three types available, but more will be added to the final product before launch.

Though the holographic Barbie is a 3D computer animation, the projection itself is only 2D, and won’t appear if you look at the box from the side. The tech powering Barbie’s conversation skills is a bit more advanced: it’s the same we saw in Hello Barbie and the Dreamhouse from previous years, and yes, there’s an app. A smartphone isn’t required to use the Hello Hologram, but it gives parents some control over their child’s interaction with it, like setting a bed time so they don’t sit up all night gossiping with the blonde (or brunette) avatar.

Toys that listen to your children certainly have their share of privacy issues, but Mattel says no information is stored on its servers and claims the final product will be compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA). Data will be encrypted and parents can review everything the system collects.

When its raining Barbie will run to her window and see actual cats and dogs falling from the sky. We have no idea what Barbie might see in other types of weather — the demo on display at Toy Fair was a rough prototype and no date and price available are available for the Hello Hologram yet. We’ll just have to hope virtual Barbie has a virtual parka in time for next winter.

The universe may be a giant broken hologram https://briefnews.eu/the-universe-may-be-a-giant-broken-hologram/ https://briefnews.eu/the-universe-may-be-a-giant-broken-hologram/#respond Wed, 01 Feb 2017 18:43:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-universe-may-be-a-giant-broken-hologram/ quantum fabric spacetime einstein rosen bridge wormhole worm hole space shutterstock_309841256

For decades, scientists have been toying with the idea that our Universe is – or once was – a giant hologram, where the laws of physics require just two dimensions, but everything appears three-dimensional to us.

As you can imagine, it’s not an easy hypothesis to prove, but physicists say they now have observational evidence from the early Universe that fits just as neatly into the so-called hologram principle as it does with the standard Big Bang model.

“We are proposing using this holographic Universe, which is a very different model of the Big Bang than the popularly accepted one that relies on gravity and inflation,” says one of the team, Niayesh Afshordi from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

“Each of these models makes distinct predictions that we can test as we refine our data and improve our theoretical understanding – all within the next five years.”

To be clear, the researchers aren’t saying we’re living in a hologram right now. They’re suggesting that in the very early stages of the Universe – a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang – everything was being projected into three dimensions from a two-dimensional boundary.

If you’re not familiar with the whole ‘Our Universe is a hologram‘ saga, back in the 1990s, physicist Leonard Susskind popularized the idea that the laws of physics as we understand them don’t technically require three dimensions.

So how could the Universe appear three-dimensional, but in reality, is only two-dimensional?

The basic idea is that the volume of space is “encoded” on a boundary – or an observer-dependent gravitational horizon – which means it requires one less dimension than it appears.

So like a 3D hologram projected from a two-dimensional screen, the hypothesis states that the three dimensions of our Universe were projected from a two-dimensional boundary.

Since 1997, more than 10,000 papers have been published supporting the idea, so it’s a lot less crazy than it sounds.

Now Afshordi and his team report that after investigating irregularities in the cosmic microwave background – the “afterglow” of the Big Bang – they’ve found strong evidence to support a holographic explanation of the early Universe.

“Imagine that everything you see, feel, and hear in three dimensions (and your perception of time) in fact emanates from a flat two-dimensional field,” says one of the team, Kostas Skenderis from the University of Southampton in the UK.

“The idea is similar to that of ordinary holograms, where a three-dimensional image is encoded in a two-dimensional surface, such as in the hologram on a credit card. However, this time, the entire Universe is encoded.”

holographic universe big bang expansion paul mcfaddenShutterstock

The reason physicists even entertained the hologram principle in the first place is because, while the standard model of the Big Bang sounds a whole lot more sensible, there are some gaps in it that are so fundamental, they hold our entire understanding of the laws of physics at bay.

According to the Big Bang scenario, chemical reactions caused a massive expansion that seeded the formation of our Universe, and at the very early stages, it inflated at break-neck speed.

While most physicists accept the reality of cosmic inflation, no one’s been able to figure out the exact mechanism responsible for making the Universe expand faster than the speed of light, going from subatomic-sized to golf-ball-sized almost instantaneously.

In fact, just as our current theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics don’t add up when we try to explain the behavior of enormous things down to their very atoms, these fundamental laws of physics can’t explain how all the ingredients of the Universe could be balled up into a mind-bogglingly small package.

“One [hypothesis] trying to reconcile the two, quantum gravity, says that if you ditch a spatial dimension, you can also ditch gravity in your calculations to make things easier,” Ryan F. Mandelbaum explains for Gizmodo.

Enter the hologram principle.

“It’s holographic in the sense that there’s a description of the Universe based on a lower dimensional system consistent with everything we see from the Big Bang,” Afshordi told Mandelbaum.

To test how well the hologram principle could explain the happenings of the Big Bang and its aftermath, the team built a model with one time and two space dimensions.

When they inputted actual data from the Universe, including observations from the cosmic microwave background – thermal radiation emitted a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang – they found that the two fit perfectly.

CMBR city Shutterstock

But there’s a catch – it only fits perfectly when the model Universe is no more than 10 degrees wide.

The researchers say they’re far from proving that our early Universe was actually a holographic projection, but the fact that observational evidence from the real world could explain missing parts of the laws of physics in two dimensions means we can’t reasonably rule it out.

So does that mean there’s a chance we’re all living in a hologram right now? Not quite, says Afshordi – their model only applies to the Universe at its very early stages.

The question of how things transitioned from two dimensions to three is now anyone’s guess.

“I would say you don’t live in a hologram, but you could have come out of a hologram,” Afshordi told Gizmodo. “[In 2017], there are definitely three dimensions.”

The research has been published in Physical Review Letters.
