Elizabeth Holmes leaves after a hearing at a federal court in San Jose, California, on July 17, 2019.

  • Elizabeth Holmes dropped out of Stanford at 19 to start Theranos and grew its value to $ 9 billion.
  • Later, technology flaws were exposed, resulting in a months-long trial where Holmes was found guilty on three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy.
  • Now, Holmes is requesting a new trial after a key witness claimed he felt bad about his testimony.

In 2014, blood-testing startup Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, were on top of the world.

Back then, Theranos was a revolutionary idea thought up by a woman hailed as a genius who styled herself as a female Steve Jobs. Holmes was the world's youngest female self-made billionaire, and Theranos was one of Silicon Valley's unicorn startups, valued at an estimated $ 9 billion.

But then it all came crashing down.

The shortcomings and inaccuracies of Theranos's technology were exposed, along with the role Holmes played in covering it all up. Holmes was ousted as CEO and charged with "massive fraud," and the company was forced to close its labs and testing centers, ultimately shuttering operations altogether.

As she awaited trial, Holmes reportedly found the time to get engaged — and married — to a hotel heir named Billy Evans.

Holmes has since been convicted of fraud in federal court. In January, jurors found Holmes guilty on three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. They found her not guilty on four other counts and failed to reach a unanimous verdict on the remaining three counts against her.

In July, Holmes' former romantic and business partner Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani, was also convicted of fraud. He was found guilty on all 12 fraud-related charges.

Since her conviction, Holmes has become the subject of a Hulu limited series, "The Dropout," based on the ABC News podcast of the same name. The show stars Amanda Seyfried as Holmes as it chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of Theranos and Holmes herself.

Holmes has asked the presiding judge in her case to overturn her conviction. In a filing on May 27, Holmes' attorneys argued evidence was "insufficient to sustain the convictions."

"Because no rational juror could have found the elements of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud beyond a reasonable doubt on this record, the Court should grant Ms. Holmes' motion for judgment of acquittal," they wrote.

In early September, a judge tentatively denied Holmes' request to overturn her fraud conviction. Since then, Holmes has also requested a new trial, alleging in court filings that a key witness showed up to her house and said he felt guilty that his testimony could have contributed to her conviction.

Holmes' sentencing hearing is currently scheduled for October 17.

Here's how Holmes went from precocious child, to ambitious Stanford dropout, to an embattled startup founder convicted of fraud:

Elizabeth Holmes was born on February 3, 1984 in Washington, D.C. Her mom, Noel, was a Congressional committee staffer, and her dad, Christian Holmes, worked for Enron before moving to government agencies like USAID.

When she was 7, Holmes tried to invent her own time machine, filling up an entire notebook with detailed engineering drawings. At the age of 9, Holmes told relatives she wanted to be a billionaire when she grew up. Her relatives described her as saying it with the "utmost seriousness and determination."

Holmes had an "intense competitive streak" from a young age. She often played Monopoly with her younger brother and cousin, and she would insist on playing until the end, collecting the houses and hotels until she won. If Holmes was losing, she would often storm off. More than once, she ran directly through a screen on the door.

It was during high school that Holmes developed her work ethic, often staying up late to study. She quickly became a straight-A student, and even started her own business: she sold C++ compilers, a type of software that translates computer code, to Chinese schools.

Holmes started taking Mandarin lessons, and part-way through high school, talked her way into being accepted by Stanford University’s summer program, which culminated in a trip to Beijing.

Inspired by her great-great-grandfather Christian Holmes, a surgeon, Holmes decided she wanted to go into medicine. But she discovered early on that she was terrified of needles. Later, she said this influenced her to start Theranos.

Holmes went to Stanford to study chemical engineering. When she was a freshman, she became a "president's scholar," an honor which came with a $ 3,000 stipend to go toward a research project.

Holmes spent the summer after her freshman year interning at the Genome Institute in Singapore. She got the job partly because she spoke Mandarin.

As a sophomore, Holmes went to one of her professors, Channing Robertson, and said: "Let's start a company." With his blessing, she founded Real-Time Cures, later changing the company's name to Theranos. Thanks to a typo, early employees’ paychecks actually said "Real-Time Curses."

Holmes soon filed a patent application for a "medical device for analyte monitoring and drug delivery," a wearable device that would administer medication, monitor patients' blood, and adjust the dosage as needed.

By the next semester, Holmes had dropped out of Stanford altogether, and was working on Theranos in the basement of a college house.

Theranos's business model was based around the idea that it could run blood tests, using proprietary technology that required only a finger pinprick and a small amount of blood. Holmes said the tests would be able to detect medical conditions like cancer and high cholesterol.

Holmes took investors' money on the condition that she wouldn't have to reveal how Theranos' technology worked. Plus, she would have final say over everything having to do with the company.

That obsession with secrecy extended to every aspect of Theranos. For the first decade Holmes spent building her company, Theranos operated in stealth mode. She even took three former Theranos employees to court, claiming they had misused Theranos trade secrets.

Holmes' attitude toward secrecy and running a company was borrowed from a Silicon Valley hero of hers: former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Holmes started dressing in black turtlenecks like Jobs, decorated her office with his favorite furniture, and like Jobs, never took vacations.

Even Holmes's uncharacteristically deep voice may have been part of a carefully crafted image intended to help her fit in in the male-dominated business world. In ABC's podcast on Holmes called "The Dropout," former Theranos employees said the CEO sometimes "fell out of character," particularly after drinking, and would speak in a higher voice.

Holmes was a demanding boss, and wanted her employees to work as hard as she did. She had her assistants track when employees arrived and left each day. To encourage people to work longer hours, she started having dinner catered to the office around 8 p.m. each night.

More behind-the-scenes footage of what life was like at Theranos was revealed in leaked videos obtained by the team behind the HBO documentary "The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley." The more than 100 hours of footage showed Holmes walking around the office, scenes from company parties, speeches from Holmes and Balwani, and Holmes dancing to "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer.

Shortly after Holmes dropped out of Stanford at age 19, she began dating Theranos president and COO Sunny Balwani, who was 20 years her senior. The two met during Holmes' third year in Stanford’s summer Mandarin program, the summer before she went to college. She was bullied by some of the other students, and Balwani had come to her aid.

Balwani became Holmes' No. 2 at Theranos despite having little experience. He was said to be a bully, and often tracked his employees' whereabouts. Holmes and Balwani eventually broke up in spring 2016 when Holmes pushed him out of the company.

In 2008, the Theranos board decided to remove Holmes as CEO in favor of someone more experienced. But over the course of a two-hour meeting, Holmes convinced them to let her stay in charge of her company.

As Theranos started to rake in millions of funding, Holmes became the subject of media attention and acclaim in the tech world. She graced the covers of Fortune and Forbes, gave a TED Talk, and spoke on panels with Bill Clinton and Alibaba's Jack Ma.

Theranos quickly began securing outside partnerships. Capital Blue Cross and Cleveland Clinic signed on to offer Theranos tests to their patients, and Walgreens made a deal to open Theranos testing centers in their stores. Theranos also formed a secret partnership with Safeway worth $ 350 million.

In 2011, Holmes hired her younger brother, Christian, to work at Theranos, although he didn’t have a medical or science background. Christian Holmes spent his early days at Theranos reading about sports online and recruiting his Duke University fraternity brothers to join the company. People dubbed Holmes and his crew the "Frat Pack" and "Therabros."

Holmes was obsessed with security at Theranos. She asked anyone who visited the company’s headquarters to sign non-disclosure agreements before being allowed in the building, and had security guards escort visitors everywhere — even to the bathroom.

Around the same time, questions were being raised about Theranos' technology. Ian Gibbons — chief scientist at Theranos and one of the company's first hires — warned Holmes that the tests weren't ready for the public to take, and that there were inaccuracies in the technology. Outside scientists began voicing their concerns about Theranos, too.

By August 2015, the FDA began investigating Theranos, and regulators from the government body that oversees laboratories found "major inaccuracies" in the testing Theranos was doing on patients.

By October 2015, Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou published his investigation into Theranos's struggles with its technology. Carreyrou's reporting sparked the beginning of the company's downward spiral.

Carreyrou found that Theranos' blood-testing machine, named Edison, couldn't give accurate results, so Theranos was running its samples through the same machines used by traditional blood-testing companies.

Holmes appeared on CNBC's "Mad Money" shortly after the WSJ published its story to defend herself and Theranos. "This is what happens when you work to change things, and first they think you're crazy, then they fight you, and then all of a sudden you change the world," Holmes said.

In March 2018, Theranos, Holmes, and Balwani were charged with "massive fraud" by the SEC. Holmes agreed to give up financial and voting control of the company, pay a $ 500,000 fine, and return 18.9 million shares of Theranos stock. She also isn't allowed to be the director or officer of a publicly traded company for 10 years.

Despite the charges, Holmes was allowed to stay on as CEO of Theranos, since it's a private company. The company had been hanging on by a thread, and Holmes wrote to investors asking for more money to save Theranos. "In light of where we are, this is no easy ask," Holmes wrote.

In Theranos' final days, Holmes reportedly got a Siberian husky puppy named Balto that she brought into the office. However, the dog wasn't potty trained, and would go to the bathroom inside the company's office and during meetings.

In June 2018, Theranos announced that Holmes was stepping down as CEO. On the same day, the Department of Justice announced that a federal grand jury had charged Holmes, along with Balwani, with nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Around the time Theranos' time was coming to an end, Holmes made her first public appearance alongside William "Billy" Evans, a 27-year-old heir to a hospitality property management company in California. The two reportedly first met in 2017, and were seen together in 2018 at Burning Man, the art festival in the Nevada desert.

It's unclear where Holmes and Evans currently reside, but they were previously living in a $ 5,000-a-month apartment in San Francisco until April 2019. The apartment was located just a few blocks from one of the city's top tourist attractions, the famously crooked block of Lombard Street.

It was later reported that Holmes and Evans got engaged in early 2019, then married in June in a secretive wedding ceremony. Former Theranos employees were reportedly not invited to the wedding, according to Vanity Fair.

Besides the criminal case, Holmes was also involved in a number of civil lawsuits, including one in Arizona brought by former Theranos patients over inaccurate blood tests. The lawyers representing her in the Arizona case said in late 2019 they hadn't been paid over a year and asked to be removed from Holmes' legal team.

Holmes' lawyers in the federal case had tried to get the government's entire case thrown out. In February 2020, Holmes caught a break after some of the charges against her were dropped when a judge ruled that some patients didn't suffer financial loss.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, Holmes' lawyers asked the judge in April 2020 to deem the case "essential" so the defense team could defy lockdown orders and continue to travel and meet face-to-face. The judge said he was "taken aback" by the defense's pleas to violate lockdown.

It soon become clear that the pandemic — and the health risks associated with assembling a trial in one — would make the July trial date unrealistic. Through hearings held on Zoom, the presiding judge initially pushed the trial back to October 2020 and later postponed it further to March 2021.

In March 2021, Holmes requested another delay to the trial because she was pregnant. She asked to push back the trial to August 31, and her request was granted. Holmes reportedly gave birth to the child in July.

Heading into the trial, Holmes felt "wronged, like Salem-witch-trial wronged," says a person who used to work with her closely.

The trial kicked off in September. In opening statements, prosecutors argued that, "Out of time and out of money, Elizabeth Holmes decided to lie." Meanwhile, the defense argued that although Theranos ultimately crumbled, "Failure is not a crime. Trying your hardest and coming up short is not a crime."

Holmes also admitted that she added some pharmaceutical companies' logos to Theranos' reports without authorization. Investors previously said they took some reassurance in those reports because, based on the logos, they thought major pharmaceutical companies had validated Theranos' technology. Holmes said she added the logos to convey that work was done in partnership with those companies, but in hindsight she wishes she had "done it differently."

Hours later, the jury returned a mixed verdict for Holmes, finding her guilty on one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of wire fraud. They found her not guilty on four other counts and failed to reach a verdict on the remaining three counts.

In a 24-page filing on May 27, Holmes' attorneys argued for her acquittal, saying the evidence was "insufficient to sustain the convictions."

Jurors took seven days of deliberations to reach their verdict, finding her guilty of four counts of tricking investors into pouring money into what she claimed was a revolutionary testing system.

They wrote, "Because no rational juror could have found the elements of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud beyond a reasonable doubt on this record, the Court should grant Ms. Holmes' motion for judgment of acquittal."

Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes leaves after a hearing at a federal court in San Jose, California, U.S., July 17, 2019.

  • Elizabeth Holmes has requested a new trial. She was convicted of fraud and conspiracy in a months-long trial that ended in January.
  • Her partner, Billy Evans, says one of the government's star witnesses showed up at their house last month, saying he was losing sleep over his testimony.
  • Last week, the judge in Holmes' case tentatively denied her prior request to toss her conviction.

Elizabeth Holmes is trying to ditch her guilty verdict, and a key witness in her trial may have just given her some ammo in that fight.

On Tuesday, the Theranos founder filed a motion requesting a new trial based on "newly discovered evidence." Holmes had been convicted on counts of fraud and conspiracy in January.

According to the motion, Adam Rosendorff, who was Theranos' lab director from April 2013 to November 2014 and a key witness for the prosecution in Holmes' trial, made attempts to contact her last month, expressing regret about his testimony against her.

On August 8, Rosendorff left a voicemail for Holmes' attorney, Lance Wade. In it, he asked to see Holmes, saying such a meeting would be "quite healing" for both of them. Later that day, Rosendorff showed up at Holmes' house, according to an account of the incident from Billy Evans, Holmes' partner.

"My first thought was he was lost, he looked disheveled," Evans recalled in an email to three of Holmes' attorneys, filed with the motion, that documents their interaction. "His hair was untucked, his hair was messy, his voice slightly trembled."

Evans said Rosendorff kept asking to speak with Holmes.

Evans wrote of his encounter with Rosendorff: "He said he feels guilty, it seemed like he was hurting. He said when he was called as a witness he tried to answer the questions honestly but that the prosecutors tried to make everybody look bad (in the company). He said that the government made things sound worse than they were when he was up on the stand during his testimony. He said he felt like he had done something wrong. And that this was weighing on him, He said he was having trouble sleeping."

Rosendorff remarked that he and Holmes were friends, and he wanted to help her, according to Evans' email.

"He said Theranos was early in his and her career, that he had just finished residency, and that everyone was working so hard to do something good and meaningful," Evans recalled. "He said that everyone was just doing the best they could."

Based on the new development, Holmes' team wants a new trial or an evidentiary hearing where Rosendorff would be subpoenaed to "testify about his concerns."

The new motion comes just days after the judge in Holmes' case tentatively denied her request to throw out her conviction on the grounds of "insufficient evidence."

During Holmes' trial, Rosendorff had testified that he'd tried to delay the launch of Theranos' machines for patient use because they produced inaccurate results, but Holmes went ahead with it anyway.

He also said he was asked to come up with "reasons other than test performance" to explain unusual test results and that Theranos had no formal proficiency testing protocol.

During the trial, the court saw an email Rosendorff had sent Holmes in November 2014, in which he wrote, "I feel really uncomfortable with what is happening right now in this company. I am feeling pressured to vouch for results that I cannot be confident in."

Eamonn Holmes says ‘I’ve been in tears’ as he makes announcement on This Morning https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-says-ive-been-in-tears-as-he-makes-announcement-on-this-morning/ https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-says-ive-been-in-tears-as-he-makes-announcement-on-this-morning/#respond Wed, 07 Apr 2021 12:11:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-says-ive-been-in-tears-as-he-makes-announcement-on-this-morning/

Eamonn Holmes, 61, and his wife Ruth Langsford, 61, were on hand to host Wednesday’s edition of the programme and the former teased he had an announcement to make at the start of the show. Midway through This Morning, the presenter told viewers of the ITV show he was going to become a grandad as his eldest son Declan is expecting a child with his wife, Jennie. The presenter and his wife were visibly emotional over the news as they fought back the tears.

At the beginning of the announcement, Eamonn said: “I’ve been having a very tough week. Tell everyone how tough my week has been.”

Ruth replied: “It’s been very, very tough. No, it has and you’ve told people a lot but I do know he is in a lot of pain.”

Taking over, the former Sky News broadcaster added: “I don’t like complaining about anything,” before explaining he’d had a lot of support from viewers over his recent back problems.

“It hasn’t been a good time and I’ve been in tears and I’ve been in tears again because it involves these two people here.”

An image of Declan and Jennie was shown on screen as Eamonn’s children don’t tend to make appearances on his shows.

“The clue is their surname is Holmes. Declan is my eldest boy, he’s 32 years of age and there is Jennie his beloved wife,” the presenter explained.

“And they have just announced that I’m going to be a grandparent which means I am a [grandad],” he continued as Ruth applauded him.

Declan is Eamonn’s eldest child from his first marriage to Gabrielle Holmes, which ended in 1995 following the birth of two other children; Rebecca and Niall.

Along with his wife Ruth, the broadcaster also has another son called Jack but Declan is the first to give the television veteran a grandchild.

Taking to Twitter, viewers reacted to the news as one wrote: “@EamonnHolmes so glad you’re going to be a granddad. You had me worried for the last hour. Also Granny @RuthieeL. Congratulations to the parents of the new arrival due in July.

Another posted: “Thought Eamonn Holmes was gonna retire or something…he’s gonna be a grandad? Great news but very badly worded… #ThisMorning.”

A third remarked: “@EamonnHolmes @thismorning Geez Eamonn, you news sounded like there was something seriously wrong with you. Can you be less dramatic and sound more cheerful.”

“Not very impressed with Eamonn Holmes leading everyone on to think he’s poorly or something only to then announce he’s going to be a Grandad? Badly worded lead up #ThisMorning,” a fourth shared.

It was only last year, Eamonn and Ruth spoke out about the idea of becoming grandparents in the not-so-distant future.

Discussing the prospect on the show last year in light of school closures because of the pandemic, the former said: “The next time we are in a school will be when we are grandparents.”

Ruth added: “We will be grandparents! I will look forward to it. You don’t have all the responsibility, do you?

“You just have all the nice stuff, like prize-giving, the nativity play, you don’t have to do early morning school runs.”

“We look forward to those days again,” Eamonn said but back in 2018, he added more speculation to the rumour mill he was going to be a grandad.

The presenter said: “If it’s God’s will and there are grandchildren then I would be the most fun granddaddy on the block!”

“He doesn’t like the thought of being a grandpa because it makes him feel old,” Ruth explained in an interview with HELLO!

“But I can guarantee you the minute a baby is put in his arms and is his son’s child, he will be mush. I can’t wait! I think it will be lovely,” she added.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.

Kate McKinnon Exits Hulu Series About Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes https://briefnews.eu/kate-mckinnon-exits-hulu-series-about-theranos-founder-elizabeth-holmes/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-mckinnon-exits-hulu-series-about-theranos-founder-elizabeth-holmes/#respond Fri, 19 Feb 2021 11:50:26 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/kate-mckinnon-exits-hulu-series-about-theranos-founder-elizabeth-holmes/

Kate McKinnon will no longer be stepping into the role of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, our sister site Deadline reports.

The Saturday Night Live staple was set to play Holmes in The Dropout, a Hulu limited series based on the ABC News podcast of the same name. The project, which snagged a series order in April 2019, will reportedly continue with a new actress in the role. McKinnon was also attached as an executive producer.

Once billed as the next Steve Jobs, Holmes founded a privately held health technology company called Theranos in 2003 when she was just 19 years old. By 2013, the company — which claimed to have developed more accurate blood tests that required less blood than traditional exams — was worth about $ 10 billion, but a series of reports and scandals eventually exposed Theranos as a scam.

ABC News describes its podcast as follows: “The story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye? How did the woman once heralded as ‘the next Steve Jobs’ find herself facing criminal charges — to which she pleaded not guilty — and up to 20 years in jail? How did her technology, meant to revolutionize healthcare, potentially put millions of patients at risk? And how did so many smart people get it so wrong along the way?”

Are you disappointed that McKinnon won’t be playing Holmes? (Don’t worry, she’s still playing Carole Baskin!) Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes ‘to be offered BBC show’ after This Morning departure https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-and-eamonn-holmes-to-be-offered-bbc-show-after-this-morning-departure/ https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-and-eamonn-holmes-to-be-offered-bbc-show-after-this-morning-departure/#respond Sun, 22 Nov 2020 09:53:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-and-eamonn-holmes-to-be-offered-bbc-show-after-this-morning-departure/

This Morning viewers have seen Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes host This Morning together for 14 years and are hugely popular with ITV viewers. However, it was reported last weekend the duo had been dropped from their slot on Friday’s editions of the morning daytime show. Now, it’s been claimed they could be back on-screen elsewhere as the BBC look to give them a new gig.

Ruth and Eamonn appeared on Friday morning’s edition of the daytime show as normal but it came just days after rumours they had been axed from their roles in a shock move from ITV.

This Morning favourite Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary are said to be gearing up to replace them.

The pair had impressed show bosses with their chemistry when they stepped in for Ruth and Eamonn during the summer.

Despite Alison and Dermot’s reported appointments pleasing fans of the hosts, some This Morning viewers were gutted to hear the report that Ruth and Eamonn had been dropped.

However, a TV source has revealed the pair could be making a move to the BBC as the broadcaster looks to poach them after being dropped.

“Eamonn and Ruth have a huge fanbase and are very experienced.

“They can easily carry any number of shows, so producers at the Beeb are considering handing them a format to front,” a source told The Sun.

Express.co.uk has contacted representatives for Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes as well as the BBC for comment on reports.

It comes after reported new host Dermot O’Leary spoke out on the prospect of the new role, noting he didn’t want to “tread on anyone’s toes.”

Speaking to Ireland AM on Thursday, The X Factor veteran said: “Of course, I hope so, but like you said it is always tricky when there are colleagues and friends involved.

“There’s nothing confirmed yet, but you know, we enjoyed doing the summer, so we’d like to do more.’

“But at the same time, you don’t want to tread on anyone’s toes or treat anyone badly,” he added

It’s not yet known when Ruth and Eamonn will be waving goodbye to the ITV show as they continued to appear on Friday morning.

And fans are reluctant to see the pair go, with one fan saying on Twitter: “Ruth and Eamonn absolutely make this morning, stupid to get rid of them #thismorning.”

“@ITV you’ll be mad to get rid of Eamonn and Ruth. Only watch the show on Fridays now for them #ThisMorning,” agreed another.

A third wrote: “#ThisMorning Please don’t get rid of Eamonn and Ruth, they’re Brilliant! I won’t be watching the dreadful Dermot O’dreary.”

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.

“Didn’t rate Alison when she presented it, awkward to watch. I’ll give Fridays a miss, really enjoy watching Eamonn and Ruth present,” a viewer commented.

A tweet read: “Eamonn & Ruth are a class-act – very polished, professional incisive and amusing. Why change a winning combination? Very sad!”

“Not a good decision, Eamonn & Ruth are national icons, they have a huge following & are well respected. I’m a big fan of Dermot would be an excellent replacement for Philip Schofield who time is really up! Alas, Alison is not a TV show anchor, viewing numbers will go down…” Someone mentioned.

“The media is changing, be part of it. The MSM will be wondering where their ratings are going. I can see an Eamonn and Ruth show on the horizon,” Another suggested.

Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes ‘furious and upset’ as they’re CUT from This Morning https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-and-eamonn-holmes-furious-and-upset-as-theyre-cut-from-this-morning/ https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-and-eamonn-holmes-furious-and-upset-as-theyre-cut-from-this-morning/#respond Sat, 14 Nov 2020 19:29:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-and-eamonn-holmes-furious-and-upset-as-theyre-cut-from-this-morning/

ITV viewers tune in to see Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes present Friday’s edition of This Morning every week in place of Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. However, during the summer, the pair took some time away and a number of other presenters filled in during this time. One hosting duo which went down well with viewers was Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond and it now seems the pair could be seen in place of Ruth and Eamonn after it has been reported the husband-and-wife duo have been dropped.

The pair have been presenting together on the ITV daytime show for 14 years and are a much-loved part of the This Morning family.

However, after news emerged they are set to have to bow out, it’s been reported Ruth and Eamonn are “furious” about the decision.

“They have real warmth, it’s time for a change and they are perfect.

“Eamonn is pretty furious and everyone feels for him and Ruth, they are well-liked on the team, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made,” an insider told The Mirror.

ITV boss Kevin Lygo told the Edinburgh TV Festival earlier this year the show would not be back in 2021 as originally believed.

“It’s not definitely returning – it might return, and if it does the format will tweak,” Lygo said (via The Sun).

As the programme’s comeback remains uncertain, this would only give Dermot more time to take on the This Morning presenting role.

Fans were quick to share their thoughts on the news, with mixed reactions on the presenting shake-ups.

One shared on Twitter: “Congratulations @AlisonHammond, this was a long time coming!! #ThisMorning.”

“Hope it’s not true. I love @AlisonHammond and I like Alison presenting but I love @EamonnHolmes and @RuthieeL too on a Friday #ThisMorning,” said another.

A third commented: “That’s weird tbh. I know they didn’t please everyone but I did like Ruth and Eamonn on it. Ruth still has Loose Women luckily.”

A fourth fan wrote: “Alison has absolutely grafted like no one else, and has won the nation’s heart. She deserves every success.”

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.

Denise Welch clashes with Eamonn Holmes in explosive COVID row: ‘How am I causing panic?’ https://briefnews.eu/denise-welch-clashes-with-eamonn-holmes-in-explosive-covid-row-how-am-i-causing-panic/ https://briefnews.eu/denise-welch-clashes-with-eamonn-holmes-in-explosive-covid-row-how-am-i-causing-panic/#respond Fri, 04 Sep 2020 13:59:39 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/denise-welch-clashes-with-eamonn-holmes-in-explosive-covid-row-how-am-i-causing-panic/

This Morning saw Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford back for the final instalment of the week. As ever, the presenters were joined by a range of guests to discuss various topics. One of this morning’s talking points remained COVID-19 after some famous faces, including Denise Welch, have come out and given their thoughts on the Government’s strategy towards the disease. However, when host Eamonn accused Denise of causing “panic” she continued to stay firm on her stance in a heated discussion.

Today’s show saw Denise and This Morning’s resident doctor, Dr Sara Kayat speak out on the pandemic.

With the Government now urging Britons to go back to work as life slowly begins to resume to normal, many members of the public have differing feelings on what should happen next.

And when Eamonn led a debate between Denise and Dr Sara, the former slammed the media and Government’s response, claiming they were not explaining how things had improved.

Denise claimed: “At the moment, people aren’t going in (to hospital), aren’t putting their sick relatives into hospital – it’s criminal.”

Taking aim at the news coverage once more, the Denise continued: “What we have is, ‘Bong, fears rise as spikes reach 1,075 positive tests per day’.

“So if you’re going to frighten us with how many were dying every day, please enlighten us and tell us how things have improved, when no one is dying.”

Touching on the issue of mental health, she said: “As a mental health person, if people want to say, ‘She’s on about that again,’ I don’t care because of the people it does help – I will do anything to help balance the fear-mongering.

“The other day, it said, ‘Universities could become the care homes of the second wave,’ how dare they?”

Those watching at home flocked to Twitter to comment on the debate, with many coming out in support of what the star had shared.

One said: “Thank you, you are totally right, I work in a care home and we’ve said we will lose more residents from mental health due to lockdown than COVID! Plus I’m a high-risk pregnancy and have to go to appointments on my own, so no support at appointments.”

Another shared: “Denise you are smashing it on @thismorning thank you so much.”

“I couldn’t agree with what you are saying more.  So much scaremongering it’s terrible!” commented a third.

However, not everyone agreed with Denise, with one saying: “Please calm down. I know you’re passionate but I can’t listen to shouty people! It’s stressing me out. Calm comes across better.”

Another added: “Why on earth is This Morning giving a platform to tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorist Denise Welch? Who next? David Ike?”

Eamonn Holmes steps into BBC Rule Britannia row on This Morning ‘Happy to take your money’ https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-steps-into-bbc-rule-britannia-row-on-this-morning-happy-to-take-your-money/ https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-steps-into-bbc-rule-britannia-row-on-this-morning-happy-to-take-your-money/#respond Tue, 25 Aug 2020 12:13:05 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-steps-into-bbc-rule-britannia-row-on-this-morning-happy-to-take-your-money/

One headline which was unavoidable was the BBC’s decision to ban the lyrics to Rule Britannia at the Last Night of the Proms and Nick and Vanessa had very strong opinions about it. As the pair argued, Eamonn Holmes had to step in to find out if Nick felt the BBC were wrong to ban the Rule Britannia lyrics.

Eamonn remarked: “What I’m picking up from you Nick, is that the BBC are happy to take your money, they’re very very happy to take your money.

“But they will tell you what to do. They’re not broadcasting for you, they’re telling you, they’re imposing their values.

“It’s almost as if they are politicising or they themselves are campaigning on a number of issues, this being one.”

“I think there is a danger that the BBC, and I’m aware of what Vanessa says and we have addressed this on my radio show, has in a way gone down a silo in a way that it is quasi-campaigning,” Nick replied.

“It almost believes that it is part of social engineering. It isn’t. It is there to inform and to entertain.

“It has done in this particular instance for more than 90 years with the music and that should be the default position.

“If you find people who think that is wrong, they will be very, very scarce. This is where the BBC, I would argue, has lost its direction and manifestly lost it.”

Eamonn hit back: “Except you left one of those principles off which was to inform, educate and entertain.”

“Well presumably Vanessa you’ve got problems with the national anthem,” Nick replied.

Vanessa explained: “Do you know the second verse? No one knows the second verse of the national anthem.”

“So you’ve got a problem with that?” Nick asked again.

Yesterday on This Morning, Ruth Langsford had to step in as an argument between India Willoughby and Matthew Wright became heated over Rule Britannia.

India stated: “Look, what is wrong with the Empire, I’m a massive fan of the Empire.

“The Empire did a lot of good all around the world and a lot of the things they actually brought to countries have been copied and they’re still in place today.

“The Empire is a great thing, Britain is a great country and if you look at in the whole, we have done more good than bad.”

Matthew hit back: “It came at the same time as the Boer War when we got load of minerals by invading a country and putting its people to death. That’s why it was written.”

As they argued, Ruth stepped in: “I’m going to have to put a full stop on you. Full stop on you both on that one.”
