Republican Sen. Mike Lee holds a narrow lead over independent candidate Evan McMullin in the Utah Senate race, in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive statewide races in recent memory in the longtime GOP stronghold.

In the latest Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll — among registered voters — Lee earned the support of 36% of respondents, while 34% backed McMullin and 13% opted for another candidate. Per the polling results, 16% of respondents also indicated that they were undecided.

Among likely voters, the race remains largely unchanged, with Lee leading McMullin 37% to 34%, with 16% of respondents stating that they were undecided.

The poll surveyed 815 registered voters from Sept. 3 through Sept. 21 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.43 percentage points.

Jason Perry, the director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, told Deseret News that the polling indicated that a swath of moderates — who are still not sold on giving Lee a third term in Washington, DC — are the key to the incumbent winning in November and are also critical to McMullin if he is to upset the Republican lawmaker.

"Mike Lee continues to be in the driver's seat, but the most interesting aspect of this poll is who the undecided voters are — moderates and liberals," Perry told the publication. "Mike Lee needs some of the moderates and Evan McMullin needs all the moderates and liberals he can convince, but those groups are in a quandary."

Utah Democrats in April threw their support behind McMullin in the November contest, in turn passing over a nominee from their own party. In endorsing McMullin, Democrats lined up behind a former CIA officer who unsuccessfully sought the presidency in 2016, but performed strongly in the Beehive State — winning 22% of the statewide vote and holding Donald Trump below 50% of the vote in one of the most Republican states in the country.

While Lee overwhelmingly votes in line with most Republican senators, McMullin told NBC News in July that he wouldn't caucus with either major party should he be elected to office this fall.

And while Republican candidates generally enjoy a healthy financial advantage in Utah, McMullin has been able to remain competitive with the incumbent.

According to OpenSecrets, Lee has raised $ 7.9 million and had nearly $ 2.5 million in cash on hand, while McMullin has taken in over $ 3.2 million and had nearly $ 1.3 million in cash on hand.

In the last Deseret News/Hinckley poll — which was conducted in July — Lee held a 41%-36% lead over McMullin.

The latest results show some erosion in support for the senator, as there has since been an increase in the number of voters who are undecided.

  • JD Vance has a one-point lead over Tim Ryan in the Ohio Senate race, according to a new Marist poll.
  • For months, Vance and Ryan have been locked in a tight race in the Republican-trending state.

JD Vance has a razor-thin lead over Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan in the Ohio Senate race, with the Republican nominee edging out the veteran congressman by one-percentage point, according to a new Marist Poll.

The survey showed that Vance had 46% support among registered voters, while Ryan earned the backing of 45% of respondents; nine percent of respondents said that they were undecided.

Among voters who indicated that they were highly likely to vote in November, Vance led by a similar one-point margin (48%-47%).

In the poll, Vance attracted the support of 85% of Republicans, with 9% of GOP respondents crossing over to back Ryan.

The venture capitalist and "Hillbilly Elegy" author performed strongly in western Ohio, where he led Ryan by 40 percentage points (65%-25%), and in the Appalachian region of southern Ohio, where he held a robust 28-point lead (60%-32%).

However, Ryan has managed to remain competitive in the Republican-friendly Buckeye State by consolidating the Democratic base while also performing well with independents and peeling off some GOP voters.

In the survey, Ryan captured 92% of the Democratic vote and had a two-point lead with independents, while also earning the support of nearly one-in-ten Republican respondents.

Among white voters — by far the largest share of voters in Ohio — Ryan and Vance are nearly even, with the Democratic congressman winning 45% of their votes to 47% for the GOP nominee.

Ryan led Vance by 11 percentage points (50%-39%) among nonwhite voters.

And Ryan is running ahead in three critical regions where he must deliver robust margins in order to win statewide — he led in the Cleveland area 53%-35% and metropolitan Columbus 51%-43%.

In the Cincinnati area — where populous Hamilton County in recent years has increasingly backed Democratic candidates in statewide races — Ryan held a 47%-45% edge over Vance.

The top three issues for respondents in the poll were inflation (36%), the preservation of democracy (27%), and abortion (18%).

While Vance has hammered Ryan over the economy by linking him to President Joe Biden — who is currently unpopular in the state — the Democratic nominee has sought to highlight his opposition to free-trade deals that accompanied the decline in manufacturing jobs in the state.

In the gubernatorial contest, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine held a wide 55%-37% lead over his Democratic opponent, former Dayton mayor Nan Whaley.

Among those who indicated that they would definitely head to the polls this fall, DeWine held a 55%-39% lead.

DeWine, who is seeking a second term in office, received the backing of 92% of Republicans and attracted the support of 10% of Democratic respondents.

Among independents, DeWine held a significant 22-point lead (54%-32%) over Whaley.

In the survey, the governor also led in every region of the state, including the Democratic-leaning Cleveland area, where he bested Whaley 48%-45%.

Marist polled 1,200 registered voters from September 12 through September 15; the survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

The American was arrested in a posh hotel overlooking the Kremlin in Moscow by Federal Security Service (FSB) before the New Year. He was put in custody and charged with espionage a few days later, facing between 10 to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Whelan is a former US Marine, who worked as a security director for BorgWarner, a major Michigan-based car parts manufacturer. Whelan had been visiting Russia since 2007 and this time he arrived to attend a friend’s wedding, according to his family. He reportedly liked the country, had a profile on a Russian social media website, and even a basic command of the Russian language.

The Marines gave Whelan, who served two tours in Iraq, a bad conduct discharge in 2008 over accusations of theft.  This detail, made public after his arrest, was a surprise for the family. He was also revealed to be a citizen of at least four countries – US, UK, Ireland and Canada – all of who are now issuing statements on his detainment.

The 48-year-old was born in Canada’s Ottawa to British parents, with his family originally coming from an area close to Birmingham in the UK. He moved to the US as a child.  Canadian diplomats said that Whelan had maple leaf citizenship, but his brother David could not say if he still had the passport.

After the US demanded consular access to its citizen, the request was swiftly granted by Moscow. American ambassador Jon Huntsman, visited Whelan in detention and told the family that the man was doing OK.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that Whelan’s ordeal was being closely followed in London.

“Our position is very, very clear… individuals shouldn’t be used as pawns of diplomatic leverage. We need to see what those charges are against him to understand whether there is a case or not,” Hunt said. “We’re not ruling out any theories at all at this stage as to why this might have happened.”

Several hours later, the Republic of Ireland stepped in, with the Department of Foreign Affairs telling The Independent that Whelan was also an Irish citizen and that it was ready to “provide all possible and appropriate assistance” in his case. The British and Irish missions in Moscow have also requested consular access to Whelan.

The suspect’s attorney said that his client was treated “professionally and humanely” by the Russian investigators. The defense has also appeal the court ruling to hold him in jail without bail, calling the measure excessive. 

Details about Whelan’s spying activities in Russia and his arrest might be scarce at the moment, but it seems the mainstream media has already figured everything out.

The New York Times said that CIA almost never sends its officers into Russia without diplomatic protections, while John Sipher, former clandestine CIA operative who worked in Moscow,  insists that Whelan does not fit the profile of a spy, according to NPR.

CNN said that 20 years that the accused spy may face in Russia would provide “plenty of time to be swapped for… Maria Butina.”

CBS suggested that the ex-Marine “is a pawn in Russia’s play to get back one of its spies, Maria Butina,” though the Russian student was not actually charged with espionage. MSNBC asked David Whelan if he believed that his brother’s arrest “was retaliation, was revenge in some way by the Russians?”

Butina is a Russian gun activist, who was arrested in the US in July and eventually pleaded guilty to working as a foreign agent without proper registration. The 30-year-old spent months in solitary confinement and complained of conditions close to torture, such as being deprived of sleep at night.  Russia’s top officials have many times criticized Butina’s arrest, calling it politically motivated, but insisted that the woman never had any ties with the Kremlin.

Australia’s batsmen battled a deteriorating pitch in their bid to build a match-winning lead on the third day of the second Test in Perth on Sunday.

The hosts led by 43 after both teams’ first innings despite a superb Virat Kohli century, but found batting incredibly tough in their second innings.

At stumps, Australia were 132 for four, with Usman Khawaja on 41 and Tim Paine on 8, an overall lead of 175.

Although they still had six wickets in hand, opener Aaron Finch was taken to hospital for scans after retiring hurt with an injured right hand on 25.

The cracks in the pitch were starting to become a significant factor, with Finch’s opening partner, Marcus Harris, also struck flush on the helmet by a rising delivery in making 20.

The hosts will be looking to post a lead in excess of 300 to allow the bowling quartet ample opportunity to level the series at 1-1 heading into the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

The value of the pound against the euro has held today, after only having just slightly recovered following the leadership challenge on Wednesday night. The rate is now €1.1114 according to Bloomberg figures, while yesterday the pound rose against the euro at €1.110. The steady value of sterling comes as Theresa May returns to Brexit negotiations, with her fellow MPs warning the party could fall apart over its division on their confidence in the Prime Minister. On Thursday the markets saw the pound rise thanks to the Prime Minister’s comeback and it has so far remained steady.

Laura Parsons, market analysis expert at TorFx told Express.co.uk: “After a volatile week, the pound to euro exchange rate is just about holding above €1.110.

“The pound was unable to benefit from yesterday’s dovish European Central Bank (ECB) rate decision however, with all eyes still on Prime Minister Theresa May and her Brexit deal. 

“With no more UK data until next week, Brexit headlines will be responsible for any final flurries of GBP movement before the weekend.”

The leadership challenge came after 48 MPs started the secret ballot as they did not agree with May’s current Brexit deal.

Following her win, Theresa May said: “I am pleased to have received the backing of my colleagues in tonight’s ballot.

“Whilst I am grateful for that support, a significant number of colleagues did cast a vote against me and I have listened to what they said.”

May travelled to Brussels yesterday to continue working on the deal which will see the UK leave the EU in March 2019. She joined the EU summit to discuss the contentious Irish backstop. The pound to euro exchange rate is likely to continue fluctuate over the next few uncertain months, as the Brexit deal continues to develop.

Laura explained earlier this week how the pound could struggle to pick up.

“News that EU leaders are ruling out the possibility of the Brexit deal being renegotiated weighed on the British currency and the uncertainty will keep the pound under pressure as the week continues,” she said on Wednesday.

The pound dropped ahead of the vote of no-confidence at the start of this week, with Mrs May saying that changing Conservative leader would “put our country’s future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it”.

She went on to claim that further political upheaval could lead to Brexit being delayed or stopped altogether.

The Prime Minister said: “I’ve been a member of the Conservative party for 40 years, as an activist, councillor, shadow minister, home secretary, and now prime minister.”

Sir Graham said: “The threshold of 15 percent of the parliamentary party seeking a vote of confidence in the leader of the Conservative Party has been exceeded.”

The vote left the value of the pound in a state of uncertainty of Wednesday.

Hamish Muress, currency analyst at OFX, said: “Theresa May’s decision to fight for her job has left the pound in a state of limbo.

“Uncertainty is the word of the day. The prospect of a general election would not be good news, and it’s no secret that sterling strives for stability.”
