All Barcelona attempts to prise the Brazilian playmaker away from Merseyside are doomed to failure, according to those in charge at Anfield.
On this evidence, Coutinho might struggle to win back a place in Liverpool’s forward line.
Progression to the Champions League group stages, for only the second time in eight seasons, was secured comfortably.
Or at least, as comfortably as it could have been, given their defensive wobbles.
Make no mistake about it, Liverpool look awesome going forward.
Better teams than Hoffenheim, though, could enjoy a field day against their back line.
It seemed as if Klopp was on a mission to prove a point to Hoffenheim midfielder Kerem Demirbay, who had cheekily claimed his team played better football.
The home side’s response was to score three times in the first 21 minutes. Indeed, as Emre Can volleyed in Roberto Firmino’s cross for that third goal, ending a sumptuous move begun by a Sadio Mane backheel, Klopp could be seen shouting: “That’s football.”
It was a breathless start. In the first three minutes, Mo Salah headed over at the far post after a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick had been blocked, and Mane was denied by the trailing leg of keeper Oliver Baumann after he was played in.
The first goal was not long in following, and it came courtesy of a sublime build-up and a touch of fortune.
Firmino’s ball opened up the Hoffenheim defence for Mane to run clear, and this time Mane checked before backheeling into the path of Can, whose shot beat Baumann after a slight deflection.
Liverpool’s second goal came soon afterwards. This time Firmino, in space on the left, cut a low ball back for Georginio Wijnaldum to roll a shot against the post, before an unattended Salah whacked in the rebound.
As Can volleyed in No3, Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann knew he had to do something.
The decision to play former West Ham midfielder Havard Nordtveit in a back three had been a bad error of judgment. With just 24 minutes gone, Nagelsmann put Nordtveit out of his misery and sent on Mark Uth in attack.
The change unsettled Liverpool.
Serge Gnabry, once of Arsenal, dinked wide a great chance to pull one back for Hoffenheim, before Uth had more success, taking on Sandro Wagner’s pass and cutting a shot across Simon Mignolet and into the far corner of the net.
That was a sobering moment for Liverpool. They still almost added a fourth before half-time, with Firmino denied by Baumann’s block, before Mane steered an effort wide.
But then they almost conceded a second as Gnabry whipped a shot just wide from out on the left.
The German side did not look a great deal more comfortable defensively after the interval, even after Nordtveit’s exit, and Wijnaldum was unlucky not to score when he strode through and lifted a shot over via a touch by Baumann.
He then beat away a Mane effort and made a further save from Wijnaldum.
Baumann’s brilliance was not matched by those in front of him. Vogt’s feeble touch allowed Jordan Henderson to dispossess him and run clear before rolling the ball across for Firmino to tap in No4.
Not that Liverpool’s habit of conceding soft goals had completely gone away.
With 11 minutes to go, they were caught out, with Dejan Lovren somehow left marking two opponents as former Leicester forward Andrej Kramaric’s crossed from the left, and Wagner headed in.

Liverpool faced Hoffenheim in the second leg of their Champions League second leg play-off at Anfield, leading 2-1 on aggregate.
Jurgen Klopp’s side started the game with a bang, scoring three times in the first 21 minutes to kill the tie off.
Emre Can scored twice and new summer-signing Mohamed Salah grabbed the other.
Sadio Mane was influential in Liverpool’s forward play and played a key part in Can’s opener in particular.
The Senegal international had the crowd singing his ‘Oh Mane Mane’ chant and Gerrard joined in.
BT Sport presenter Gary Lineker asked him to repeat it at half time and he did not disappoint.
“Steven was getting so excited he started singing the Mane song,” the former Tottenham Lineker said.
“Would you like to give a rendition?”
“’Oh Mane Mane’,” Gerrard replied whilst laughing.
“There you go you see, you heard it first right here,” Lineker said.
The Anfield faithful repaid Gerrard by singing his famous song in the second half.
Liverpool went on to win the game 4-2 on the night, 6-3 on aggregate.
Mane will look to have Liverpool fans chanting his name again this Sunday when Arsenal visit Anfield.

HT: Steve McManaman and Steven Gerrard must be running out of superlatives to describe Liverpool in that half. Someone grab the thesaurus.
TWITTER ROUND-UP
James:For every time Hoffenheim had a great chance they had 5-6 players vs 4 players of us. Midfield really needs to step up defensively.
Rubio:I believe the star that the three wise men followed in the nativity story was actually a gleaming reflection of Bobby Firmino’s teeth.
Adam:Lovren is a calamity game after game. Time to bring in a quality CB.
HT: Don’t like the look of Adam Lallana’s leg brace. The midfielder was scheduled to return in November after sustaining a thigh injury, but Paul Joyce of The Times suspects it could be longer…

Liverpool v Hoffenheim: Express Sport brings you LIVE updates from tonight’s Champions League clash
HT: It’s time for some wise words from everyone’s favourite pundit, Ian Wright. He’s just said: “If Coutinho’s 100 and odd million, Mane’s 200 and odd million.” I’m guess Wright never considered a career as an accountant…
HT: LIVERPOOL 3-1 HOFFENHEIM
45: It’s end-to-end stuff here folks. Mark Uth is close to scoring his third goal in two games against Liverpool but his effort flies a couple of yards wide.
43: Almost a hat-trick for Emre Can! I’m not sure that sentence has ever been written before. Anyway, the German midfielder steals the ball of Sadio Mane before shooting wide.
41: Another close shave. Gnabry makes himself a few yards on the left flank before sending in a wicked cross/shot that flies past the far post.
38: Hoffenheim might want to give up this tactic of conceding three before they start playing. The visitors have been excellent since Emre Can’s second.
Saying that, Sadio Mane goes close after cutting inside and curling one straight at Baumann.
35: It just wouldn’t be Liverpool without a few nerves. It’s 5-2 on aggregate but Hoffenheim would go through on away goals should they pull it back to 5-5.
32: Can we stop scoring for a few minutes, lads? I’m typing so fast I think there’s smoke coming off the keyboard!

28: LIVERPOOL 3-1 HOFFENHEIM – UTH
Blimey, this Mark Uth bloke just loves scoring against Liverpool.
He’s only been on the pitch for five minutes and he’s pulled one back for Hoffenheim.
The finger will be pointed at Dejan Lovren, who played his side into trouble, and Uth converted into the bottom corner.
Just the three more required…
25: What a miss! Kramaric slips Gnabry through but the former Arsenal star slices it wide when under pressure. If you’re going to produce a miracle, you can’t miss those.
24: Desperate times call for desperate measures. Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann has made a substitution. He’s taken defender Nordtveit off and brought last week’s scorer Uth on instead.
21: LIVERPOOL 3-0 HOFFENHEIM – CAN
If it wasn’t finished with Mo Salah’s second, it certainly is now.
Jurgen Klopp goes absolutely ballistic on the touchline when Emre Can bags his second of the match with a beautifully-taken volley from Roberto Firmino’s linked cross.
Liverpool have quite simply blown Hoffenheim away inside 22 minutes.

17: LIVERPOOL 2-0 HOFFENHEIM – SALAH
That’s game, set and match, right?
After some good play from Albert Moreno, the Spaniard cuts it back for Wijnaldum, whose first-time strike rebounds off the post to Mo Salah to convert from close range.
16: Did you know that Sadio Mane has been directly involved in 15 goals in his 17 appearances at Anfield for Liverpool (10 goals, 5 assists). Barcelona better come knocking for him too!
15: This high-pressing game from Liverpool is doing the job. Hoffenheim players barely have a second to compose themselves. The Reds are also doing a good job of switching play from left to right quickly.
14: Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann doesn’t look so cocky now folks. He’s aggressive chewing gum on the bench looking a bit bemused. Cant say I feel too sorry for the German tactician.
13: In the grand scheme of things, the task remains the same for Hoffenheim. The German visitors still need to score twice to take this into extra time.
10: LIVERPOOL 1-0 HOFFENHEIM – CAN
Injured? I bet Hoffenheim wish he was!
Roberto Firmino plays another exquisite ball to Sadio Mane, who flicks it back to the onrushing Emre Can to blaze it into the near corner.
Now that’s settled a few nerves around Anfield. Now they need to put this to bed.

Which players are most likely to sign for Liverpool this summer?
9: Emre Can is down with what looks like an ankle injury. I’m sure he’ll be fine.
Close! After some beautiful interplay, Kaderabek crosses for Gnabry, who inexplicably blazes wide from inside the six-yard box. False alarm, he was offside.
6: Here comes Sadio Mane… saved! That was a golden opportunity for the winger. He skips through one-on-one with Baumann who sticks a leg out.
3: It sounds like Liverpool fans were annoyed by Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann’s comments about a lack of atmosphere. They’re signing their hearts out. Great atmosphere.
Alberto Moreno wins a free-kick in Trent Alexander-Arnold territory… blocked! The ball deflected onto the head of Mo Salah, who heads over from a few yards out.
1: LIVERPOOL 0-0 HOFFENHEIM
We’re underway folks. Liverpool are 90 minutes away from the Champions League proper.
19:44: The players have emerged from the tunnel to the epic “CHAMPIOOOOONS” music. They’ll be hoping that’s not the last time they hear that at Anfield this season. Oh, YNWA was pretty epic, but I don’t really need to tell you that.

19:43:Steven Gerrard:“Anfield is a special place, hopefully it’s going to be another special evening. There’s been many in the past and we expect to see another one tonight.”
19:41: Here’s a welcome statistic for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Liverpool have played German opposition 18 times at Anfield in European competition, and have never lost – winning 15 games and drawing three.
19:40: Ok here’s a quick reminder of the starting XI’s.
19:38: I’m sure you already know, but Philippe Coutinho isn’t in the stadium tonight. It appears he’s been struck down by a mystery illness.
Funny how players get sick just before transfer deadline day every year… It’s a bloody epidemic!

19:30: BT Sport have Steve McManaman and Steve Gerrard in the studio tonight, with a sprinkling of Owen Hargreaves to dissect the visitors.
McManaman, or “Macca” as Gerrard calls him, has advised someone whack Alberto Moreno on the head to remind him of his defensive duties.
He said: “Jurgen Klopp certainly trusts Alberto Moreno. He’s had a good pre-season and he offers Liverpool a lot more going forward. The only thing he has to be careful about is his decision making.
“We know he’s got great energy, we know he can power forward. You just feel he doesn’t need to power forward as much as he does and in certain games, like the away game, he got caught out numerous times.
“Sometimes you need to be hit on the head a bit and told ‘just relax, go forward at the right times, don’t go forward every time’. I think once he gets that he offers Liverpool a lot.”
I’m sure there’s a few thousand Liverpool fans prepared to fulfil that role…
TWITTER ROUND-UP
Ragnhild:Come on, Reds and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Show Hoffenheim who is the boss on the grass tonight. We are cheering from the Norwegian countryside.
Matt:Andrew Robertson has great game against Crystal Palace & gets dropped & walking mistake Alberto Moreno comes in?! Was it just me that thought this was a big game?
Georgia:Jurgen Klopp should just make Alberto Moreno a left winger if he’s keeping him in the squad. Can’t defend for his life but he’s great going forward.

19:15: This is a bit convoluted, but it’s basically everything you need to know going forward.
Stick with me.
Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United and Celtic will discover their Champions League opponents in Monaco tomorrow.
Liverpool will also learn their group stage opposition, assuming Jurgen Klopp’s men do a job tonight.
The draw for the eight groups, featuring 32 teams in all, begins at 17:00 (BST) on Thursday at the Grimaldi Forum in the Principality.
There are four pots of eight teams, with one team from each pot forming a group, although teams from the same association cannot face each other.
Premier League champions Chelsea are in pot one alongside Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk, Monaco and Spartak Moscow.
United, who were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage in 2015-16, are in pot two alongside City, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Paris St Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Porto.
Spurs are in pot three, with Napoli, Basle, Olympiakos, Anderlecht, Roma and Besiktas, while Celtic will be in pot three or four depending on the final qualifiers from today’s matches.
There could be some intriguing ties. Chelsea, for example, could face Barcelona or PSG from pot two, Napoli from pot three and RB Leipzig from pot four.
The first Champions League group matches take place on September 12 and September 13.

Liverpool v Hoffenheim: Express Sport brings you LIVE updates from tonight’s Champions League qualif
19:10: Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann thinks he’s a bit special.
Three years ago Nagelsmann was in the second row when Brendan Rodgers’ Reds defeated Newcastle 2-1 on the final day of a season at Anfield.
But it doesn’t sound like he was too impressed. The German has decided to have a pop by dissing (cool term for disrespecting) English supporters, saying they’re not as “hardcore” as German fans.
“My overall impression was very good, I was a bit surprised to see the difference in terms of how supporters seemed to behave here compared to Germany,” he said.
“There wasn’t that extreme chanting from one end of the ground like we’re used to, it was more all four stands joining and clapping together. In Germany the hardcore supporters at one end are chanting endlessly.”
19:00: Klopp started the season by utilising back-in-favour Alberto Moreno on the left-hand side of his defence as summer signing Robertson was made to wait.
However, an impressive first performance in the red shirt from the Scot against Crystal Palace on Saturday wasn’t enough to have swayed his manager’s thinking.
I see that quite a few of you are unhappy with that in the Twittersphere. Blimey, ‘Twittersphere’ is actually in the dictionary now. The end is nigh…

Can you guess who? Yep, the never-ending story involving Philippe Coutinho.
Barcelona have seen bids worth £72m, £90m and £118m rejected by the Reds this summer, but Sky Sports say they’ll make a fourth offer worth £138m.
It’s said the bid will be £101m up front and a further £37m given in add-ons.
18:40: Tonight should be all about Liverpool, but once again that pesky Wayne Rooney has stolen the headlines.
Rooney has retired from international football having scored 53 goals in 119 appearances, making him his country’s all-time record goalscorer.
I’m sure Liverpool supporters will wish him well as he dedicates himself entirely to Everton for the next few years…

LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS
Philippe Coutinho will once again be missing for Liverpool.
Having missed the first three games of the season due to a back injury, the Barcelona target now has a bout of illness and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed he was unsure when the midfielder would be able to return.
Right-back Nathaniel Clyne (hamstring) and midfielder Adam Lallana (thigh) both remain out too, with Liverpool holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg in Germany.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp:“Anfield is a main factor, we all know it, it’s a very special place.
“Nothing happens by itself – we have to perform, we have to deliver – but then we all know the atmosphere can and will help you.
“I really hope that everybody is ready for this game, everybody is ready to fight. I would be concerned if the people thought it was a weak side coming from Hoffenheim…”
Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann:“I don’t think if we win it will be a shock. There will be a surprise because I don’t think everyone is betting on us, but we have belief that we can do it.
“We are good enough not to have to hide here. We know this is a great club with a great history, but my feeling is excitement.”

Liverpool scored two vital away goals against Hoffenheim
But while Liverpool have two away goals, this Champions League play-off tie is still up for grabs.
The Reds take a slender advantage back to Anfield for next week’s second leg and those crucial away goals but, if this is anything to go by, there will be more drama in seven days’ time.
It was Alexander-Arnold’s first-half free-kick that set the Reds on their way before a deflected cross from James Milner appeared to put one foot in the group stages for the Jurgen Klopp’s men.
But substitute Mark Uth’s late goal for the hosts at the Rhein-Neckar Arena opened the tie back up.
Liverpool were out to complete what Kop boss Klopp described “the most difficult steps” to the Champions League group stages after finishing fourth in Premier League last season.

Simon Mignolet – 8
But they started this as they finished in their 3-3 with Watford in their league opener on Saturday – all over the place at the back.
It took a last ditch lunge from Joel Matip to deny former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry from tapping home in just the sixth minute.
Then Dejan Lovren clumsily upended Gnabry in the area in the 11th minute to give the hosts at the Rhein-Neckar Arena the chance of a perfect start.
It was a chance they blew though as former Leicester forward Andrej Kramaric’s shocking penalty was punched away by Kop keeper Simon Mignolet, who later made another good save to deny Gnabry.
Just four minutes later, Mohamed Salah should have put Liverpool in front when Roberto Firmino – on his return to his former club – put the £36.9m summer signing clean through but he slid his shot wide.

Liverpool secured an advantage in the first leg of the Champions League playoff
The game had been going at a frantic pace until then but it cooled until Liverpool’s other pacey forward Sadio Mane forced Ermin Bicakcic to foul him 25 yards from goal.
Emre Can, Alberto Moreno and Alexander-Arnold stood around the dead ball with the latter the least expected to strike, but the right-back was the one to curl it over the wall and into the bottom corner.
In these parts the build-up was all about the Bundesliga side’s big arrival in the Champions League.
The plucky side from the tiny village in the Rhein-Neckar region of Germany were looking to rub shoulders with Europe’s elite.
Just a decade ago, Hoffenheim were not even a fully professional outfit and it was only nine years ago that they reached the Bundesliga.
Fairy-tale stuff there is no doubt.
GETTY
Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first goal for Liverpool
But rather than be the villain of the piece, Alexander-Arnole is currently writing his own fairy-tale.
When Hoffenheim were breaking into the Bundesliga, Alexander-Arnold was just eight and dreaming of one day donning the red shirt of his beloved Reds.
Now he can tick off scoring for Liverpool as well as playing in the Champions League for them.
Lovren should have put the Reds two up just before the break but he headed a Moreno corner just wide before Firmino, who spent four years at Hoffenheim, miscued after the restart.
Gnabry had the ball in the net but it was rightly ruled out for offside before the ex-Gunner snatched at another chance.
Milner’s cross was then deflected into Hoffenheim keeper Oliver Baumann’s net by Havard Nordtveit with 16 minutes to go and the Reds substitute was almost embarrassed to celebrate.
Liverpool looked like they were coasting home until three minutes from the end when a long punt forward was beautifully controlled by Uth and he lashed in to give Mignolet no chance.
The shine was slightly taken off Alexander-Arnold’s night as he allowed Uth in behind him as he pleaded for offside.
Hoffenheim almost got an equaliser when Karem Demirbay’s free-kick was met by Benjamin Hubner, but his header went just over.
That will serve as the warning for next week. This tie is not over and there is still a lot of work to do for Liverpool until they are really back among Europe’s best.

HT: HOFFENHEIM 0-1 LIVERPOOL
Liverpool might have ridden their luck, but 18-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold has given them a precious away goal and lead in Germany with a sublime free-kick.
Kramaric, Gnabry and Wagner all had great opportunities to get on the scoresheet, but they’ve been made to pay for poor finishing.
44: How have Hoffenheim not scored?! Kramaric beats Alberto Moreno to the header, and Gnabry’s snapshot is parried away by Mignolet. Wagner drags his follow-up wide.
41: That opener has knocked the stuffing out of Hoffenheim. They don’t look rattled, but they’ve not created much to trouble Liverpool.
38: Emre Can looks to double Liverpool’s advantage with a forward run, but his strike is straight down the keepers throat.
35: HOFFENHEIM 0-1 LIVERPOOL – ALEXANDER-ARNOLD
Naughty! Bicakcic is booked for dragging down Mane, who’d broken through the middle. In professional terms I think they would call it a “good foul.”
There’s no Coutinho to take this one, so the responsibility is left to Trent Alexandre-Arnold, who curls an amazing free-kick from 30-yards straight past the motionless keeper.
Who knew he had that in the locker?! Huge goal for Liverpool, and a huge moment for the youngster.
That’s his first goal for Liverpool in his ninth start in all competitions. Still, wish he’d done that in the Premier League because he’s in my Fantasy team!
32: The ball falls to Kaderabek just outside the six-yard box, but his back is to goal and the Liverpool defence stick to him like glue.
30: Half an hour gone and there’s not been too much goalmouth action since that penalty save, which was actually the only shot on target.
27: Did you know that Simon Mignolet has saved 7 of the 20 penalties he’s faced in all competitions since joining Liverpool (excluding shootouts)? Me neither, but Opta knew and I pinched that from them.
24: Some breaking transfer news coming from Merseyside. West Brom have signed Everton’s Gareth Barry, while Ronald Koeman’s side have reached a £45million agreement with Swansea for Gylfi Sigurdsson.
22: Hoffenheim clearly aren’t happy with the chaotic start to the match, and have slowed the tempo right down. You can sense the BT Sport commentary team are itching to say “Liverpool are desperately missing Philippe Coutinho,” but they’ve managed to refrain so far.
19: Trent Alexander-Arnold (who I will abbreviate to TAA because I’m incredibly lazy), wins a corner for his side but Hoffenheim clear. Liverpool growing in confidence after that HUGE reprieve.
15: I’m still trying to get over that penalty folks. One of the worst you’ll see this season. No doubt.
Mo Salah has the perfect opportunity to punish the former Leicester striker. He breaks clear of the Hoffenheim defence but hesitates and shoots narrowly wide. It should be 1-1 here, but it’s still goalless.

Hoffenheim vs Liverpool: Express Sport brings you LIVE coverage of tonight’s qualifier
12:Penalty! Now on first glance that’s a little harsh. Gnabry looks to wriggle his way past Lovren, who makes the slightest contact and the former Arsenal man goes down.
Kramaric steps up… and saved! What an utterly dreadful penalty. He literally poked it slightly to Mignolet’s left and the goalkeeper pushes it away to safety.
No wonder Leicester binned him…
8: Chance! Gnabry is close to collecting a cross in the six-yard box but Joel Matip manages to clear the danger.
Dejan Lovren then gets lucky when trying to slide and clear. He gets in a muddle but fortunately for him, it trickles back to Mignolet instead of the onrushing Kramaric.
Lively start here.
6: Simon Mignolet races off his line to clear a speculative long pass and boots it to the moon. Sadio Mane then slips over when trying to take it round a couple of players.
3: Mo Salah is straight into the action on the right flank. He combines nicely with Emre Can but he’s quickly closed down by about 124 Hoffenheim players. Hunting in packs these German lads.

Aaand we’re off! Incredible atmosphere tonight. Liverpool wearing their white shirts, Hoffenheim in blue.

19:44: And it’s time for THE CHAMPIONNSSSSSSS music to be blared around the stadium. I cant confirm that none of the players attempted to sign it, but I bloody did!
19:42: Quick reminder of those starting XI’s folks. We’re almost underway.
Enam:Need a big performance from the captain tonight. Otherwise if he continues like this even Milner will end up replacing him…
Liz:Would love nothing more than a comfortable 3/4-0 win tonight but we all know that won’t happen.
Jay:If Liverpool attack like they did on Saturday they will win but if they defend like the did they will lose. BTTS and #lfc win for me

19:35: Sticking with the rise of Hoffenheim, they are managed by the Bundesliga’s youngest-ever head coach, Julian Nagelsmann.
The 30-year-old has been dubbed the mini-Mourinho, and received the stamp of approval from Jurgen Klopp this week.
Asked about Nagelsmann, Klopp said: “He is a big, big, big coaching talent. We don’t know each other very well because we didn’t really have time – when I left Germany I think he was an U19 coach or something like this.
“But since then, we have written messages and things like this. I’ve really followed his way since then because I like good football and obviously his team is playing interesting and good football.
“He’s not the only one but he’s a good example for a lot of really good young managers in Germany. It’s an interesting time on the manager market in Germany at this moment.”
High praise indeed.
19:30: There’s a touch of the Leicester’s about Hoffenheim.
The village has a population of just 3,272 (can you tell I consulted Wikipedia for that figure?) and were only promoted to the Bundesliga in 2008.
9 years later, they’re about to play their very first European game after finishing fourth last season. Good luck, lads!
How many European matches have Liverpool played? Just the 364…

19:25: Chris Waddle isn’t impressed with Philippe Coutinho’s back injury folks.
That’s probably the understatement of the evening…
Waddle doubts the Brazil international even has an injury, and has accused him of downing tools.
He said: “A back injury? Wow. It is basically ‘I have downed tools, I want to be on the next plane to Barcelona’. If it happened soon he would be available for the next game.
“If his mind is set to leave, take the money.”

Nooruddean:Expect Liverpool to sail past Hoffenheim. Their star player is an Arsenal reject and their top scorer failed at Leicester. They’ll do nothin…
Malcolm:Firmino back at Hoffenheim!! Got a feeling he will be doing some damage tonight
Rougez:I can only hope Hoffenheim aren’t as sharp as we are given we’ve just started the season, but it will be difficult either way.

19:15: Hoffenheim will be alien to most of this Liverpool team, but not for Roberto Firmino.
Firmino joined the Reds from Hoffenheim in 2015 for £29million, and he’s never looked back really.
Boasting the whitest teeth in England, will Firmino come back to haunt his former employers?
19:10: Whoops, I forgot to let you know the Hoffenheim side.
Gnabry? I’m sure Arsenal fans in North London will be praying for their former player to inflict maximum damage on Liverpool…
19:00: Jordan Henderson is going to channel his European experiences to help Liverpool overcome Hoffenheim tonight.
The England midfielder is one of only three survivors from the team which lost the Europa League final to Sevilla in Basle in May 2016, and he’s using that bitter night as motivation.
“That was a tough night for us as a team. Losing in any final but particularly a European final is tough,” he said.
“You have to use that and make sure you do not have that feeling again and we will use that going into the game and that anger, if you like, to have a good Euro campaign so hopefully it will help us going forward.”

18:55: Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann has warned Liverpool NOT to take his side lightly.
I’ve always thought warning the opposition about complacency was a bad idea, but Nagelsmann seems to think different.
Anyway, The 30-year-old has been something of a revelation in Germany, guiding the club to the brink of their first appearance in the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga.
Asked if they could cause an upset he said: “Absolutely. I am aware of that. Of course we know Liverpool is the favourite in this encounter and we know we can, with a good match, shock our opponent.
“I don’t know if we need to shock them or the English public but I can also say we need an absolutely top performance tomorrow in order to do that.”

Ewan:Nearly game time, c’mon Liverpool! Looking for a solid performance, hope we worked on set pieces!
Joe:Big game for the pool tonight, don’t get beat & snatch an away goal. They don’t look ready for the season ahead
Paul:Shouldn’t be this nervous for a game, you just never know what the side will do
18:40: Jurgen Klopp has made no changes to the side who drew 3-3 with Watford on Saturday.
Trent Alexander-Arnold continues in the absence of Nathaniel Clyne, while Alberto Moreno starts ahead of James Milner, who’s on the bench again.
Further forward it’s Roberto Firmino leading the line with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in support.

18:35: Here’s Liverpool’s starting line-up folks. No surprises.
18:30: Not long until those starting XI’s are announced folks. Surely Klopp’s going with the same team that started against Watford on Saturday?
18:25: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp appeared to lend his support to the idea, and I’m sure it’s got nothing to do with Philippe Coutinho…
Klopp said: “It would have helped us this year (if the window had shut early). It makes sense that when the season is starting, planning for the team is over.”
18:20: You seen this story? I’m sure Jim White will be rolling in his grave…
Premier League clubs are pushing for the transfer window to be shut before the start of the season.
The issue is set to be discussed at a shareholders’ meeting in September with a majority of clubs in favour of shortening the window, which this year closes on August 31.
The move comes amid uncertainty over the future of a number of players, including Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, Everton’s Ross Barkley and Swansea striker Gylfi Sigurdsson.
That’s the subject of our poll tonight folks. Are you for or against the idea?

18:15: How much is a tidy sum, Jamie? Allow me to explain.
Liverpool will win £1.8million if they manage to eliminate Hoffenheim, with a further participation bonus of £11.5m for the 32 clubs who reach the Champions League group stage.
It’ll then rise to somewhere in the region of £35m when they start the competition properly.
Should they lose, Jurgen Klopp’s side get £2.7m and are booted straight to the Europa League where the prize money is significantly smaller.
My GCSC maths (grade C) tells me that winning is paramount. Bloody genius me…
18:10: Good evening folks, welcome to our LIVE coverage of Hoffenheim v Liverpool from the Rhein-Neckar-Arena.
I really can’t stress just how important tonight’s play-off is.
Win and Liverpool will have one foot in the Champions League group stages and a tidy cash injection.
Lose, and Jurgen Klopp’s side will drop down to the Europa League with Merseyside rivals Everton and Arsenal.
High stakes? You better believe it!

PREVIEW
Liverpool will be without Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge for tonight’s clash.
Coutinho has a back injury, Lallana is out for two months with a thigh problem while Sturridge could return from a similar problem at the weekend.
Right-back Nathaniel Clyne is still absent after hamstring and back injuries.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp:“This is the strongest qualification round. England play Germany and you can go out against Germany.
“We were both fourth last season, both in strong leagues, but that does not increase the pressure. We want to go to the group stages.
“That was our target for the whole of last season and now we have two steps to go – but they are the most difficult steps. That is how it is.
“If anybody thinks because they don’t know about German football or the quality of Hoffenheim – and a lot of people only know two names – it is clear we have to do the job.
“I am really positive and looking forward to the game, even when I know it is really difficult. That is no problem. That is how it should be in the Champions League, where all the games are difficult.”

11:35: There’s history in this one. Scottish champions Celtic meet Kazakhstan side Astana, who they beat in the third qualifying round last season. Bit of Déjà vu going on.
11:30: Despite that excellent record against German sides, Hoffenheim aren’t pushovers.
They finished fourth in the Bundesliga – just two points behind Borussia Dortmund and five off runners-up RB Leipzig.
11:26: I bet you’re desperate for a stat. OK, here it comes, courtesy of Opta.
Liverpool have lost just one of their last 14 European games against German opposition (W8 D5).
I like those odds.
11:23: I wonder what the main storyline of Liverpool’s tie with Hoffenheim is going to be…
Could it perhaps be Roberto Firmino returning to his former club? Yep. He really didn’t want them but that’s how the cookie crumbles, pal.
11:16: Right, that concludes today’s draw. It was all rather quick and efficient in the end… I wanted more Eurovision-style filler!
The first leg of the playoff round will be played on 15 and 16 August, with the return legs played the week after on 22 and 23 August.

11:12: Mr Robot has just been brought onto the stage to explain all the rules. I think we’re ready to get underway!
11:10: It’s still going! Somewhere in the world Mark Lawrenson has just switched off the television…
11:07: Blimey, UEFA love a good montage. We’re being treated to five-minutes worth of action from last season’s final – I’m pretty sure it’s long than the actual draw.
11:04: ‘These are the champions!’ Yep, the Champions League music has sounded out for the first (relevant) time this season.
Not being able to reach the high-pitch notes has never stopped me from trying to sing it. Maybe that’s why everyone’s walked out the office…
10:58: You probably know how this works.
We’ve got ten more places left in the competition, and the winners of the qualifying round will join the other 22 already-qualified teams in the main draw.
10:55: It was a tense night for Celtic yesterday.
The Scottish champions narrowly beat Rosenborg 1-0 on aggregate in Trondheim thanks to a spectacular James Forrest winner.
His effort secured their spot in the draw, and they will face either Qarabag, Astana, Rijeka, Slavia Prague or Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the play-off round.
10:52: If you’ve perused the ‘preview’ section below, you’ll know that Celtic and Liverpool can’t draw each other.
The five teams that Liverpool CAN draw include; Nice, Hoffenheim, Istanbul BB, Steaua Bucharest and Young Boys.
Anyone you particularly fancy meeting, lads?
