Amazon hires unsafe trucking firms twice as often as peers, WSJ finds

For years, people in cars stuck behind blue delivery trucks in traffic have echoed media reports criticizing Amazon for clogging American roadways. It’s well-known that the Amazon drivers steering these fleets of trucks and vans don’t actually work for Amazon but are hired by companies contracted by Amazon, and Amazon has repeatedly denied liability for any dangerous driving reported, though.

Because Amazon has contracts with more than 50,000 firms, just how dangerous Amazon’s contracted drivers really are remains a question that is hard to track. However, The Information reported last year that horrific car crashes are part and parcel of Amazon’s culture of convenience. And then more recently, The Wall Street Journal provided another window into how deadly America’s favorite speedy delivery service can be. Since 2015, WSJ reported this week, “Trucking companies hauling freight for Amazon have been involved in crashes that killed more than 75 people.”

To arrive at this number, WSJ partnered with Jason Miller—a Michigan State University professor who researches transportation safety—to analyze various sources of government data from “3,512 trucking companies that were inspected by authorities three or more times while hauling trailers for Amazon since February 2020.”

Earlier this month, we learned that Disney and Lucasfilm had another live-action Star Wars series in the works. It’s a Rogue One prequel series that will focus on Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor, and it just got the best showrunner that a series focusing on a Rebel spy could ask for: The Americans executive producer Stephen Schiff.

Deadline has word on the Rogue One prequel series landing Stephen Schiff as showrunner. He’s coming off five years working on the FX series The Americans, one of the best shows to hit cable in the past decade. The series frequently flew under the radar, but it finally got the recognition it deserved when it was nominated for Best Drama Series this year, and Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell landed Best Actor and Best Actress nominations, with the former taking home the trophy.

But the most important thing about The Americans is that it focused on two Russian spies tasked with siphoning the United States government for information after Ronald Reagan is elected president. It was a series that was packed with suspense, drama and style, and if Schiff can bring that level of intrigue to this Rogue One series, then we’re in for a real treat.

We don’t know much about the Rogue One series so far, but it will be focusing on Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the alliance. It all takes place before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and we got a taste of what that seedy world is like at the beginning of the movie, where Cassian Andor has to make the difficult decision of dispatching with one of his sources before they’re found out by Stormtroopers.

One big question we have is whether any other cast members from Rogue One will be brought on board the series. Obviously most of the primary cast won’t be involved since Rogue One is the story that brought the ragtag team of Rebels together for their mission to retrieve the Death Star plans. But there are plenty of other Rebel Alliance members who could be part of the supporting cast, including the beloved Admiral Ackbar, who never appeared in Rogue One, despite being around during that time.

Stephen Schiff is the only name from behind the scenes of the new Rogue One prequel series that we’ve heard about so far, but apparently a writers room has already been put together and production is slated to begin next year.

WhatsApp has hired a grievance officer for India in order to meet a key demand set by the country’s government to halt the spread of fake messages that triggered mob lynchings. In an update to its FAQ section, WhatsApp directs users to lodge complaints through the mobile app, send an email, or write in to grievance officer Komal Lahiri (formerly of Facebook and PayPal), who’s based out of the US. According to her LinkedIn, Lahiri was brought on in March as “senior director of global customer operations and localization.”

Earlier this year, a series of violent mob attacks fuelled by misinformation circulated via WhatsApp left 12 people dead in the span of a month. Since then, the company has taken out ads in newspapers in an effort to educate locals on fake news. It also began labelling forwarded messages and limiting the ability to forward texts to multiple chats at once. India’s other key demands require WhatsApp set up a local presence that meets the country’s laws (which it’s reportedly working on). But it’s thus far refused to track messages as it goes against its policies on privacy and security.

  • CBS has hired two law firms to investigate the sexual misconduct allegations against its CEO, Leslie Moonves.
  • Six women alleged that Moonves had accosted them sexually without their consent, according to a New Yorker article published last week.
  • Covington & Burling and Debevoise & Plimpton, two top-flight legal entities, will handle the matter and “conduct a full investigation of the allegations,” according to CBS’s board of directors.

Two different law firms will investigate allegations of sexual harassment levied against CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, the company’s board of directors said Wednesday evening, part of a process that will likely determine the fate of the well-known Hollywood executive.

Covington & Burling and Debevoise & Plimpton, two top-flight legal entities, will handle the matter and “conduct a full investigation of the allegations in recent press reports about Chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves, CBS News and cultural issues at all levels of CBS,” the board said in its statement.

Fans have been eager for any details they can get their hands on when it comes to the developing Lord of the Rings series in the works at Amazon. Now the series finally has a pair of writers on board the project that is being produced in in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

During Amazon’s Television Critics Association 2018 panel, Star Trek 4 and Jungle Cruise writing duo JD Payne and Patrick McKay were announced as the writers of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series, which will take place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Find out more below.

Payne and McKay have been writing partners since meeting on the high school debate team more than two decades ago. In addition to the aforementioned scripts in development, the writers were also behind a 2017 Blacklist drama script called Escape, which is currently set upwith Academy Award-nominated producer Mike DeLuca.

During the Amazon TCA 2018 panel, head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Sake explained the unusual process of finding a show after buying the property:

“We have closed a deal with a writing team, Payne and McKay who come out of the world of Star Trek. It was a very thoughtful process. It’s such a vast world, there are so many different ways to go with that property. Thanks for Sharon Tal Yguado  on my team she led the charge bringing in people. We had an abundance of enthusiasm in the creator/ writer arena and a lot of time spent talking about different takes. The next phase is a big development process as they build out this world.”

The Lord of the Rings franchise was so big it necessitated Amazon planting its flag to obtain the rights before any further development. Salke has not ruled out taking that kind of leap for future properties:

“I don’t think there’s a new process underway. For specific creators or big pieces of IP, those conversations can evolve in different ways. Often writers, I’ll sit with creators and talk about areas we’re interested in. Projects may emerge out of that without a formal pitch process. It’s not by design. It’s just part of the organic process dealing with creative partners, especially ones we bring on with deals. Lord Of The Rings is an exception because it’s a big title targeted and won by Amazon before I got there, but I know in the caste of those big event series, we would be competitive out there.”

As for Peter Jackson’s possible involvement in the new Middle-earth project, there hasn’t been an update since June when there were conversations about bringing the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchises’ director into the fray. Perhaps we’ll hear more about that as the project gets closer to getting in front of a camera. But with a multi-season commitment for this Lord of the Rings series, we might be waiting awhile for that to happen.

Google snapped up a few Apple chip design talents over the past year to create its own processors, but now it has lost one of its own to another rival. According to Bloomberg, Facebook has hired Shahriar Rabii to head its silicon development efforts. Based on his LinkedIn profile, Rabii led the group that designs chips for the big G’s devices, and one of the team’s creations is the Pixel Visual Core, which is the tech giant’s first custom imaging chip that allows third-party apps like Instagram to take HDR+ quality photos. He was with Google up until sometime this month and has only just joined the social network.

Facebook started dropping hints that it has huge processor ambitions a few months ago when it put up job listings to fill positions for a new team. One of the listings called for a person to manage an “end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organization.” While Facebook is one of the biggest companies in the world, it’s not exactly known for hardware like Apple and other tech giants are. Hiring an industry veteran who headed Google’s chip team could help it achieve its goals and prevent the project from becoming a waste of time and resources.

The company has refused to talk about Rabii and the new team with Bloomberg, so it has yet to reveal if it’s using home-grown chips with the devices it’s reportedly working on. According to previous reports, Facebook is developing a tablet for video calls and an Echo-/Home-like smart speaker. The publication says Rabii will report to Andrew Bosworth, the company’s head of virtual reality and augmented reality. Whether that means Facebook is making its own chips for Oculus devices, however, remains to be seen.

Guy Petrillo, Cohen’s new lawyer, is a partner at Petrillo Klein & Boxer. He served as the chief of the criminal division in the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York from 2008 through 2009, and was an assistant US attorney in the office from 1990 through 1997. He did not immediately return a request for comment from Business Insider.
