Enlarge / The “Surface Phone” is speculated to be some kind of dual-screen device. (credit: Microsoft)

We’ve seen from patent filings and leaked timelines that Microsoft seems to be working on a dual-screen handheld device codenamed Andromeda. Some new APIs found in the latest Windows 10 preview provide more evidence, even offering clues as to its capabilities.

Twitter user WalkingCat spotted an API for devices with two screens and a hinge. Applications can query the orientation of the two screens and the position of the hinge. The hinge’s position is reported as being one of several options: closed, concave, convex, flat, and full.

This points at not just a hinge but a 360-degree hinge similar to those found on Lenovo’s Yoga laptops and HP’s various 360 systems. Further, it implies that the new device will have some functionality when fully closed or when opened all the way up with a screen showing front and back.

Match Group buys Hinge on its way to dating dominance https://briefnews.eu/match-group-buys-hinge-on-its-way-to-dating-dominance/ https://briefnews.eu/match-group-buys-hinge-on-its-way-to-dating-dominance/#respond Wed, 20 Jun 2018 23:24:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/match-group-buys-hinge-on-its-way-to-dating-dominance/

Match Group, the company that owns Tinder, has bought a controlling stake in Hinge, which was redesigned to cater to individuals seeking relationships instead of the casual dating (and hookup) culture prevalent in other dating apps. This adds the ‘anti-Tinder’ to the company’s collection of other online services OkCupid, PlentyOfFish and Match.com, adding to its already substantial dominance of the digital dating landscape.

Match Group bought a 51 percent stake in Hinge with the option to buy the rest of the shares in the next year, both companies told Bloomberg. But the former actually started investing in the latter back in September, taking a seat on its board and starting discussions of a potential acquisition.

In March, Match Group sued the company behind one of the only other remaining notable dating services, Bumble, for patent infringement. The latter quickly countersued, revealing that Match Group was interested in acquiring it, and Bumble claimed the first lawsuit was intended to drive down the asking price and sully other interested parties.

Facebook’s looming plans to launch its own dating service don’t worry the CEOs of Match Group or Hinge: “Our demographic is millennials and they’re using Facebook less and less,” Hinge CEO Justin McLeod told Bloomberg. “I don’t see them as an up-and-coming brand that people are going to trust with their dating lives.”

BEIRUT (Reuters) – The prospect of Western military action in Syria that could lead to confrontation with Russia hung over the Middle East on Friday but there was no clear sign that a U.S.-led attack was imminent.

International chemical weapons experts were traveling to Syria to investigate an alleged gas attack by government forces on the town of Douma which killed dozens of people. Two days ago U.S. President Donald Trump warned that missiles “will be coming” in response to that attack.

Net neutrality revival may hinge on 1 vote in Senate https://briefnews.eu/net-neutrality-revival-may-hinge-on-1-vote-in-senate/ https://briefnews.eu/net-neutrality-revival-may-hinge-on-1-vote-in-senate/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2018 02:09:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/net-neutrality-revival-may-hinge-on-1-vote-in-senate/ A Democrat-backed Senate bill aimed at restoring net neutrality after a “misguided” repeal by the FCC only needs one vote from the GOP to pass. Meanwhile, 22 states have filed suit against the federal agency.

The measure introduced Tuesday by Senator Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) would block the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) December repeal of net neutrality rules under the Congressional Review Act (CRA). And it already has the support of all 49 Democrats and one Republican, Susan Collins of Maine, The Hill reported.

If the measure passes through the Senate with a 51-vote majority, it would then also need to pass the Republican-led US House of Representatives. If the bill passes there, the decision to either approve the measure, or veto it, would lie in the hands of President Donald Trump.

Under the Congressional Review Act, legislators have a 60-day window to pass the measure from the time the FCC repealed the regulations, which was on December 14 in a 3-2 vote. FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai approved the measure to repeal rules that blocked internet service providers (ISP) in the US from offering customers paid fast lanes or throttling and blocking internet traffic. The rules had been set in 2015 under former President Barack Obama.

“There is a tsunami of Congressional and grassroots support to overturn the FCC’s partisan and misguided decision on net neutrality,” Markey said in a statement.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) also spoke out in favor the new repeal measure, saying, “it’s clear that Democrats are committed to fighting to keep the internet from becoming the Wild West where ISPs are free to offer premium service to only the wealthiest customers while average consumers are left with far inferior options,”The Hill reported.

Nearly half of US states sue over net neutrality repeal

Attorneys general from 22 states, including New York and California, filed a lawsuit against the FCC Tuesday afternoon in the US District Court of Appeals in Washington, DC.

“An open internet – and the free exchange of ideas it allows – is critical to our democratic process,” New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) said in a statement. “The repeal of net neutrality would turn internet service providers into gatekeepers – allowing them to put profits over consumers while controlling what we see, what we do, and what we say online.”

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D) released a statement of his own in relation to the lawsuit.

“Internet access is a utility – just like water and electricity,” he said. “And every consumer has a right to access online content without interference or manipulation by their internet service provider. However, in repealing the net neutrality rules, the FCC ignored consumers’ strong support for a free and open internet.”

The officials are being joined in the suit by consumer groups including Public Knowledge and web company Mozilla, The Hill reported.

The 10 colleges and universities with the most eligible alumni, according to dating app Hinge https://briefnews.eu/the-10-colleges-and-universities-with-the-most-eligible-alumni-according-to-dating-app-hinge/ https://briefnews.eu/the-10-colleges-and-universities-with-the-most-eligible-alumni-according-to-dating-app-hinge/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2017 13:06:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-10-colleges-and-universities-with-the-most-eligible-alumni-according-to-dating-app-hinge/ college graduatesSpencer Platt/Getty

East Coast college grads may have a leg up in the dating game.

That’s according to new data from the dating app Hinge, which launched a new app last fall to help people find relationships.

Hinge combed through its user data to uncover which colleges and universities have the most sought-after alumni, revealing whether the school you graduated from affects your dating life.

Hinge found that East Coast schools have the most popular alumni, but it differs for men and women. On average, women who attended southern schools received the most likes, while men who attended coastal liberal arts schools got the most likes.

But adding a college or university to your profile, regardless of location or type, can give you an advantage, Hinge found. Users that did so were 16% more likely to receive a like than those who didn’t list a school, according to Hinge.

Here’s which schools produce the most sought-after alumni.

Atomico leads $8 million investment in Hinge Health to tackle back pain and other chronic injuries https://briefnews.eu/atomico-leads-8-million-investment-in-hinge-health-to-tackle-back-pain-and-other-chronic-injuries/ https://briefnews.eu/atomico-leads-8-million-investment-in-hinge-health-to-tackle-back-pain-and-other-chronic-injuries/#respond Mon, 24 Jul 2017 13:43:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/atomico-leads-8-million-investment-in-hinge-health-to-tackle-back-pain-and-other-chronic-injuries/

Hinge Health, a fledgling digital health startup that’s building hardware and software to tackle musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders, has raised $ 8 million in a Series A round of funding led by European VC giant Atomico, with participation from existing seed investors, including Eleven Two Capital and the Vertical Group.

Founded in 2015, Hinge Health said that it’s setting out to use technology to combat lower-back and joint pain, which is reported to cost industry and individuals as much as $ 100 billion each year in the U.S. alone. Indeed, MSK disorders, such as back and shoulder pain, are one of the top medical expenditures for employers, and Hinge Health promises to drive those costs down by half.

So how does Hinge Health plan to achieve this? Through “evidence-based digital care pathways” that harness wearables, software, exercise, and behavioral therapy.

The company ships a health kit that contains two Hinge bands with embedded motion sensors, a tablet (and stand) with pre-installed Hinge Health software, a carry case, and a charging unit.

Above: Hinge health kit

The company then delivers a “coach-led” 12-week program to fix the problem that’s leading to the MSK disorder. Besides personalized exercise coaching, it also includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

At first glance, including a tablet in the health kit seems like a needlessly expensive addition to the service, given that most people will likely have some form of Bluetooth-enabled tablet or smartphone of their own, but its inclusion hints at the target market here — this isn’t a consumer program.

“Our patients are very diverse and sometimes don’t have a tablet,” explained Hinge Health CEO and cofounder, Daniel Perez, to VentureBeat. “We prefer doing the digital exercises on a tablet, as the bigger screen is more conducive. It’s also very convenient for the patient, as the two Bluetooth sensors come pre-paired, and everything works right out of the box. Our customers’ IT departments also like that their employees on the health plan don’t have to download any extra software.”

For now, Hinge Health is only offered as part of employer-sponsored health care plans, which means this may also cover spouses and dependents. Roughly 160 million U.S. citizens receive their health care from their employer, which hints at the potential size of the market here.

In terms of pricing, well, it’s outcomes-based, but we’re told that the average price works out to around $ 1,195 per participant. The company wouldn’t reveal how many clients it has, but we’re told that around 100,000 people are covered overall by Hinge Health. It also name-checked two of its clients, U.S. Foods and Vail Resorts, which count around 40,000 employees between them. So when you factor in spouses and dependents, it’s possible that Hinge Health only has a handful of clients overall. That is purely an educated guess, however.

Pain in the back

According to a 2009 study by the UNC School of Medicine, some 80 percent of Americans will experience lower-back pain at some point in their lives, while other research suggests that many of the existing medical remedies are too costly and often ineffective.

Investigative journalist Cathryn Jakobson Ramin recently published her new book, Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery, which was the culmination of a six-year investigation into the $ 100 billion back pain industry. Ramin concluded that many of the so-called medical fixes — which include invasive surgery that costs well into the high tens of thousands of dollars — are often unnecessary and ineffective. “People in pain are poor decision-makers,” said Ramin. In a related report, Quartz called the $ 100 billion per year back pain industry “mostly a hoax.”

And it’s against this backdrop that Hinge Health has gone to market.

Prior to now, Hinge Health had raised a modest $ 2 million in seed funding, and with another $ 8 million in the bank the company said that it now plans to focus on growing its sales and product and engineering teams in London and San Francisco. It will also use its fresh cash influx to expand its existing product offering, which covers lower-back and knee pain, to include new treatments for hip, shoulder, and neck pain.

“Most chronic conditions have clear clinical guidelines underpinned by a solid evidence base,” continued Perez. “However, these guidelines are often not followed because it is too onerous for the patient and doctor. Lower back pain and knee arthritis are prime examples, where non-surgical guidelines are not followed. The result is that patients are shunted onto opiates and eventually surgery. Our vision is to improve the scale, experience, and ultimately outcomes for patients by using technology to better deliver evidence-based care, with MSK as our first beachhead.”

Digital health startups have been ripe for investment over the past year. Back in March, Livongo raised $ 52.5 million to expand its digital health platform for those with chronic conditions, while Velano Vascular grabbed $ 17 million for a needle-free blood draw device. Elsewhere, Vida Health grabbed $ 18 million to connect people with chronic diseases to health coaches, and on-demand health care concierge Accolade closed a $ 93.6 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz to help employers cut health care costs. There are now even dedicated investment funds for such startups — Seattle’s Biomatics Capital Partners recently announced the closure of its first fund at $ 200 million to invest in early-stage health startups.

Founded out of London in 2006 by Skype cofounder Niklas Zennström, Atomico has emerged as not only one of Europe’s major VC firms, but an international powerhouse. Back in February, Atomico closed its fourth fund at a whopping $ 765 million, one of the single biggest funds to launch out of Europe.

“At Atomico, we believe that some of the biggest innovations in how people live over the next decade will happen in health care,” added Atomico partner Carolina Brochado. “We believe this will be driven by tech-enabled solutions that bring consistent high quality care to even the most remote places, and especially to those who might not have had access to it before.”

As a result of Atomico’s investment, Brochado will also be joining the Hinge Health board.

Semi-final 1: Reading v Fulham

READING

Final position: 3rd (85 points)

Form: LWWLWW

View from the camp: Skipper Paul McShane: “It’s a great achievement by everyone. Everyone has worked hard, week in week out. I think we deserve to be third. But now the season goes on for another three games. We’ve got to keep our focus for another three games and finish the job off now.

“We’re third in the league so of course there’s going to be a good feeling around. It’s a credit to all the hard work we’ve put in, from the first day of pre-season until now. We’ve got to keep it going now for the next three weeks.”

Key man: Yann Kermorgant – The Reading striker is seemingly getting better with age. He provides a crucial focal point in attack to build off and he’s currently a man in form in front of goal, having netted nine times in his last nine appearances.

Tasty stat: Reading will be embarking upon their sixth venture into the EFL play-offs and fifth in the second tier. The Royals have failed to win promotion on all six occasions, most recently losing 2-4 vs Swansea in the 2010/11 final.

FULHAM

Final position: 6th (80 points)

Form: WWWWDW

View from the camp: Head coach Slavisa Jokanovic: “Reading finished third in the regular part of the competition. The table says they are favourites but we are going to try and surprise them.

“It will be a tough two games for us and for them, too. We are confident, we believe we can play good football and win the games. With this mentality, anything is possible.

“It is going to be a very important 180 minutes for us. I expect we are going to be competitive and show ambition and desire.”

Key man: Ryan Sessegnon – He is the 16-year-old everyone is talking about. Labelled as the “next Ashley Cole” by teammate Tom Cairney, Sessegnon is already one of the first names on the team sheet for Jokanovic and scored seven goals in 29 appearances this season from full-back. He was named in the PFA’s Championship Team of the Season. The scouts will be watching.

Tasty stat: The team that finished sixth in the Championship has won promotion via the play-offs just once in the last 11 seasons – Blackpool in 2009/10.

Semi-final 2: Sheffield Wednesday v Huddersfield

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Final position: 4th (81 points)

Form: WWWWWL

View from the camp: Head coach Carlos Carvalhal: “Huddersfield are a good team, they have proved that over the season. They play good football, but so do all the teams in the play-offs. I think the play-offs are different this season and each team has a 25 per cent chance.”

Key man: Keiren Westwood – The 32-year-old goalkeeper won the club’s Player of the Year award having played an instrumental role in achieving a top-six finish for the second season running. He’s been a near ever-present in a Wednesday side that have kept a club record 16 clean sheets this season.

Tasty stat: Wednesday have reached the final of both play-off campaigns they’ve played in (4-2 AET v Hartlepool in League One 2004/05, lost v Hull in Championship 2015/16 final).

HUDDERSFIELD

Final position: 5th (80 points)

Form: WDLWLL

View from the camp: Centre-back Christopher Schindler: “It is fantastic that we have got this far and, of course, I dream of what may be. However, we have got two hard legs to get through first before we can start to really dream.

“Everything starts at zero from now. We have a great chance to get to Wembley and then hopefully into the Premier League. It didn’t really matter who we got, it wouldn’t have mattered if we’d have got Fulham. I think Wednesday are a good team, they have some great players like Fernando Forestieri.”

Key man: Aaron Mooy – A strong candidate for the loan signing of the season in the EFL, Mooy has been a revelation on his temporary deal from Manchester City, and looks a natural playing in English football having plied his trade for Melbourne City for two seasons. Cool in possession and tough in the tackle, if he can win the midfield battle then Town’s chances of gaining promotion will improve greatly.

Tasty stat: Huddersfield lost both regular league meetings against the Owls this season without scoring a goal (2-0 away in January, 1-0 at home in October).
