  • There are good, bad, and ugly outcomes for the stock market as inflation continues to weigh, Charles Schwab warned.
  • Though inflation is coming down, it could easily rebound if central banks begin cutting too soon.
  • "This whipsawing pattern may support a continued environment of volatility and wide market swings as seen this year," the bank warned.

Stocks could spin three ways as inflation begins to cool, Charles Schwab analysts said in a note on Monday, outlining a good, a bad, and an ugly outcome for the market.

The good: stocks could rally as central banks ease up on rate hikes. The bad: inflation could rebound and set off even more volatility. The ugly: central banks will stay hawkish and send stocks lower.

The Fed just issued its third 75-point rate hike this year, and the European Central Bank has also hiked by an unprecedented 75 points, causing stocks to recoil in volatility.

A good outcome

If inflation continues its slow descent, markets could rebound on hopes that aggressive rate hikes will end, Schwab said. US inflation cooled slightly to 8.3% in August from 9.1% in July, sparking talk that inflation may have peaked.

Some central banks have already indicated they may be nearly done with hiking rates: Brazil's central bank stopped hiking in August, and Norway's central bank suggested its most recent 50-point rate hike could be its last, or close to it, analysts said.

"Should inflation begin to recede significantly around year-end due to a softer labor market and easing housing inflation … markets may rebound on prospects for an end to the aggressive rate hikes of 2022," analysts said. They noted though that economic growth could be slowed, as demand will take a time to pick up again, and central bankers are likely to remain cautious for any rebound of inflation.

A bad outcome

But inflation could come back, if central banks ease too soon, Schwab warned. The global policy rate for developed markets excluding the US is still low historically and remains "deeply negative" — even lower than the rate that preceded the Great Recession in 2008, analysts said.

"If central banks respond to a weakening labor market and stop hiking too soon or cut rates while the real policy rate is still firmly negative, there's a chance inflation may rebound. If it does, even higher rates may be needed to quell inflation," the note said.

That would be a repeat of the 70s and 80s when central bankers pivoted monetary policy too quickly, leading to a "whipsaw" effect in stocks.

"This whipsawing pattern may support a continued environment of volatility and wide market swings as seen this year," the bank warned.

The ugly outcome

And then, there's the possibility that central banks will actually do what they say and stay hawkish until inflation is dead. In that scenario, expect another year like 2022, Schwab said.

"Stocks would have further to fall with both price-to-earnings (PE) ratios and earnings contributing to declines; any prospect of a deep recession would likely force analysts to cut earnings estimates," analysts warned.

A discounted batch of planks is seen as people shop for lumber at a Home Depot store in Alhambra, California on May 4, 2022.

  • Lumber prices extended their 2-day decline to 10% after the Fed hiked interest rates by 75 basis points on Wednesday.
  • The aggressive interest rate hike from the Fed helped solidify the recent surge in mortgage rates to above 6%.
  • "The lumber market continues to be in a state of overall malaise as buyers anticipate lower overall demand going forward," Sherwood Lumber told Insider.

Lumber prices fell 6% on Thursday, extending their two-day decline to 10% after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by another 75 basis points.

The aggressive interest rate hikes from the Fed have helped solidify the ongoing surge in mortgage rates, which jumped above 6% for the first time since 2008 earlier this month and have doubled over the past year. On Thursday, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate surged another 27 basis points from last week to 6.29%, according to data from Freddie Mac.

The surge in mortgage rates have taken a significant bite out of home sales, which has in-turn led to price cuts and has dented homebuilder sentiment.

"The lumber market continues to be in a state of overall malaise as buyers anticipate lower overall demand going forward. Many yards are trying to pare their inventories to minimum levels and have really no fear of price upside," Sherwood Lumber's director of risk management Steve Loebner told Insider.

"This has taken all of the urgency of the past two years out of the market. We have had a few supply and transportation scares which caused short term rallies, however these have all been quickly shrugged off. Home prices are resetting to reflect the higher mortgage rates and this is a process which can take some time," Loebner said.

But the housing market hasn't completely fallen apart, and after a more than 70% decline from its record high, lumber prices can still catch a bid going forward.

"There is still a solid backlog of demand on existing single and multi-family [housing] projects… Multi-family demand in particular has been very robust and many traders report near record backlogs of projects on the books which will be starting over the next few quarters. We have also started to see some modest [lumber] production curtailments, which over time will become more prevalent if pricing remains depressed," Loebner said.

Steady demand for the essential building commodity, combined with declining supply due to potential production curtailments could ultimately spell upside for lumber in the future, at least as long as demand holds up.

"We are in for a slower grind and a more challenging market environment. However with many of the benchmark commodity lumber items already down approximately 70% from their levels earlier this year, the pervasive bearish sentiment, and the likelihood of less supply, traders would be well advised to consider the risk/reward of being overly negative at this point," Loebner concluded.

US stocks trade mixed ahead of Fed’s economic report while investors eye more big rate hikes https://briefnews.eu/us-stocks-trade-mixed-ahead-of-feds-economic-report-while-investors-eye-more-big-rate-hikes/ https://briefnews.eu/us-stocks-trade-mixed-ahead-of-feds-economic-report-while-investors-eye-more-big-rate-hikes/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 14:04:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/us-stocks-trade-mixed-ahead-of-feds-economic-report-while-investors-eye-more-big-rate-hikes/ NYSE stock traders
  • US stocks opened mixed on Wednesday with the Nasdaq up after seven consecutive declines.
  • The Federal Reserve will release its beige book report in the afternoon, ahead of the next FOMC meeting later this month.
  • A Wednesday Wall Street Journal article suggested that another 75-basis-point rate hike could hit in September.

US stocks opened mixed ahead of the Federal Reserve's beige book survey of regional business and economic conditions later on Wednesday.

The report comes as the Fed is due to meet on September 20-21. While some commentators have forecasted smaller rate hikes moving forward, a Wednesday Wall Street Journal article suggested that another 75-basis-point hike could hit in September, which would be the third consecutive move of that size.

Through 2022, the labor market has showed strength, with employers adding 315,000 jobs in August. Next week, markets will be watching as the US Labor Department releases its inflation report for the month of August, which will hold implications for the next potential rate hike.

Here's where US indexes stood as the market opened 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday:

The US dollar has surged 13% against the euro and 20% against the yen this year. Aggressive Fed policy and recession fears have pushed the greenback to a 20-year high.

China's yuan, however, has weakened even as Beijing tries to prop up the currency. On Wednesday, it slipped closer to the key threshold of 7 per dollar.

"Big Short" investor Michael Burry said the epic market crash he predicted is already in full swing. The famed commentator has repeatedly sounded the alarm on speculative assets, and flagged crypto and meme stocks as early victims to the current downturn.

Meanwhile, China and India could take advantage of a Russian oil price cap and buy more cheap barrels, according to US Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo. At a Tuesday conference, he voiced hopefulness that the two Asian nations would join the US-led price cap coalition.

In Europe, Germany is making a U-turn on nuclear energy policy, as it plans to keep two plants as backups while the natural gas crisis continues to intensify.

France, for its part, is reviving a disused gas pipeline to aid Germany. It will deliver about 2% of Germany's natural gas needs this winter, following Russia's halt of Nord Stream 1 flows.

Oil prices dropped, with West Texas Intermediate down 2.95% to $ 84.22 a barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 2.77% to $ 90.26 a barrel.

Gold edged lower 0.23% to $ 1,709.00 per ounce. The 10-year yield ticked lower 4 basis points to 3.302%.

Bitcoin dropped 0.11% to $ 18,850.11.

Tesla hikes Supercharger prices worldwide to reflect changing costs https://briefnews.eu/tesla-hikes-supercharger-prices-worldwide-to-reflect-changing-costs/ https://briefnews.eu/tesla-hikes-supercharger-prices-worldwide-to-reflect-changing-costs/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 21:36:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tesla-hikes-supercharger-prices-worldwide-to-reflect-changing-costs/

Tesla’s efforts to improve its bottom line go beyond layoffs and disappearing perks. Electrek has learned that Tesla is raising Supercharger rates around the world, with per kWh rates climbing about 33 percent in numerous markets. While it’s still less expensive than gas (even the 36 cents per kWh in some California locations is modest), it’s not quite the savings it represented in the past. According to Tesla, this is really a matter of adapting to financial realities.

In a statement, Tesla said it was increasing prices to “better reflect differences in local electricity costs and site usage.” It added that it was still launching new Supercharger stations on a “weekly” basis, and stressed that it didn’t treat its EV chargers as a “profit center.”

You might have seen this coming. Electricity isn’t getting cheaper, and the rapidly increasing number of Tesla cars on the road (particularly the Model 3) was going to increase the costs of operating a given Supercharger. The company also has to think about the future. On top of dramatically expanding its coverage in 2019, it’s planning to roll out its first super-fast V3 Superchargers. The money for those upgrades has to come from somewhere, and Tesla wasn’t about to willingly take a hit when it’s already trying to cut costs.

Martin Lewis said the big energy firms are increasing prices once again (Image: getty)

So let me be plain NOW IS THE TIME to switch before winter, every week’s delay risks you paying more.

And if you’re on a standard tariff (ie the hideously expensive one most people are on) then as with typical bills you’re overpaying by £360 a year, so if you don’t act you’re ripping yourself off.

The Energy Price hikes…

All the big six providers have put up prices this year, and now we’ve had a second round from four of them – which are due to hit your next bills.

For example, British Gas first hiked its prices on 29 May, the second rise is due on 1 October which will see the price on typical usage after rises at £1,205. As for the two who haven’t done it a second time, that could still come.

Compare them to the cheapest deals on the market and you’ll see huge savings. Yet speed is of the essence. With wholesale prices (the prices energy companies pay for energy) rising, many cheap deals are ending and being replaced by more expensive ones.

The cheapest one-year fix at the beginning of August was £867/yr, today the cheapest fix deal is £978– a rise of more than £111/year in the past month alone. And for the moment this trend looks likely to continue, so the quicker you sort it out the better.

energy

Ofgem is to put a price cap on standard prices by the end of December (Image: getty)

Yes, there’s a price cap coming, but don’t sit on your hands waiting.

The regulator Ofgem has said it will introduce a price cap on standard prices by the end of December. For someone who uses a typical amount of energy it’ll be £1,136/year fixed for six months. That will mean those on big 6 standard tariffs will see a reduction.

While Ofgem calls this a ‘fair’ price, that doesn’t mean it is a ‘good’ price – the danger is people will get the false sense of security that they’re on a good deal – where as you can lock in a fixed deal for a year at up to 20 per cent cheaper.

How to find your cheapest deal

Whatever your energy set up, whether it’s direct debit or prepay, electricity only or dual fuel, as your cheapest depends on where you live and what you use, there’s no one winner.

Therefore, the answer quite simply is to use a comparison site.

Though do beware, comparison sites are now allowed to only show you tariffs that pay them, as many of the big ones do this, which means you may not see all the deals.

There’s a full list of comparison sites at www.ofgem.gov.uk or you can use my www.cheapenergyclub.com which includes all the market’s deals by default (and it also gives you £25 dual fuel cashback if you switch).

Help I’ve never heard of the one that comes cheapest

If you’re put off by the fact your winners are names you don’t know – don’t be. Simply scroll down to one you do know – or one with a good customer service rating. You don’t have to go for the very cheapest – go for one you’re happy with.

Don’t think switching is complicated. It’s not.

It only takes minutes to find your cheapest deal and then it’s switched over in 17 days, it’s the same pipes, gas, meter, safety – you don’t lose supply – the only difference is price and customer service. And there’s no break in supply when you do switch.

British Gas customers get £200/year off – but only if you ask for it

british gas

British Gas is launching the new direct debit tariff Energy Plus Boiler Cover Oct 19′ (Image: getty)

3.5m homes are on British Gas’ standard tariff. If you’re loyal and want to stick with British Gas, its launched a new dual fuel, direct debit tariff (i.e. where you get both gas and electricity from it) called ‘Energy Plus Boiler Cover Oct 19’, available for both new and existing British Gas customers who apply online (or better via a comparison site to see exactly what it’ll cost).

On average it’s £1,020/year (though it depends on your region) and the price is fixed for a year, so it won’t rise in October – meaning a typical saving of £185/year, plus it also includes British Gas Boiler Insurance for no extra cost, as you’d normally pay £50ish for that it takes the saving to over £200.

(Reuters) – Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc’s third-quarter profit beat analysts’ expectations on Thursday, benefiting from its acquisition of Rite Aid Corp stores, and the drugstore chain authorized a $ 10 billion share buyback program.

Walgreens scrapped its deal to buy Rite Aid outright last year after failing to win antitrust approval, and said it would instead buy some of the smaller rival’s U.S. stores.

Irish drug company Horizon Pharma has hiked the price of a two-in-one painkiller by more than 2,000 percent in the past five years, according to a report in Financial Times

A 60-pill bottle of the drug combo, Vimovo, cost $ 138 in 2013 when AstraZeneca sold it to Horizon. The bottle now costs $ 2,979 after Horizon raised the price on 11 occasions.

Vimovo is a combination of the common painkiller naproxen and esomeprazole. Naproxen is the active ingredient in Bayer’s over-the-counter painkiller Aleve. A side effect of naproxen is gastrointestinal issues, including stomach pain and heartburns. As such, Vimovo combines it with esomeprazole, a proton-pump inhibitor that treats heartburn. Esomeprazole is sold over the counter by AstraZeneca as Nexium.

  • Equity strategists at Bank of America Merrill Lynch raised their year-end price target on the S&P 500 to 3,000 from 2,800.
  • “We are watching for signs to temper our enthusiasm on the S&P 500,” they said in a note. Still, they noted that the year right before a market peak is usually one of the most profitable.
  • They see evidence that investors aren’t getting ready to exit the stock market just yet.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch just got even more optimistic on the stock market, but is on standby for any reason to be less bullish.

The equity strategists led by Savita Subramanian raised their year-end target on the S&P 500 to 3,000 from 2,800, implying an 11% gain for the market this year. The index has already risen 6% this year to within 3% of where the average year-end forecast on Wall Street projected it would end the year.

Underpinning BAML’s new forecast is evidence that investors aren’t heading for the exits anytime soon.

The firm’s survey of fund managers shows that cash positions are at a five-year low. The so-called great rotation out of bonds and into stocks still hasn’t happened, as the bond market continues to extend its three-decade bull market. And although stocks are expensive by many valuation measures, they’re still historically cheap compared to bonds.

BAML’s higher forecast was also driven by the recently passed tax cut plan, which the firm expects will contribute to 6% growth in normalized earnings per share.

But there’s still the nagging question of when the bull market will run out of steam, or before that, when the market resumes having regular pullbacks. After all, as Subramanian said, more than half of the firm’s bear-market signals have been triggered.

“We are watching for signs to temper our enthusiasm on the S&P 500,” Subramanian wrote in a note on Tuesday. “And with 11 of our 19 bear market signposts having been triggered, the risk-adjusted reward of stocks appears less compelling.”

But the strategists don’t see any reason to panic now. “Note that since 1968, at least 80% of our signposts have been signaled ahead of prior market peaks,” Subramanian said.

Moreover, missing out on late stage of a bull market has historically been a costly mistake; the S&P 500 has returned 49% on average in the 24 months before every market peak since 1937.

The lousy performance of the US dollar following Fed rate hikes, in one chart https://briefnews.eu/the-lousy-performance-of-the-us-dollar-following-fed-rate-hikes-in-one-chart/ https://briefnews.eu/the-lousy-performance-of-the-us-dollar-following-fed-rate-hikes-in-one-chart/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2018 08:57:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-lousy-performance-of-the-us-dollar-following-fed-rate-hikes-in-one-chart/ For those who like to dabble in currency trading — and there’s more than a few of you — the chart below may be of interest.

From Nomura, it shows the reaction in the US dollar index, or DXY, before and after interest rate increases from the US Federal Reserve over the past few years.

DXY performance before and after rate hikesNomura/Bloomberg

While the performance of the dollar before rate hikes has had mixed fortunes, the same can’t be said after the Fed actually lifts rates.

On most occasions, the dollar actually falls, rather than gains, following a rate hike.

So what gives? Aren’t higher interest rates supposed to make a currency more attractive to investors, seeing its value increase?

In theory, yes. But the dollar’s movements aren’t being driven by actual rate increases, but rather expectations of what may happen in the future.

The pattern was yet again seen following the last interest rate increase from the Fed back in December last year, as Bilal Hafeez, strategist at Nomura, explains.

“Markets are all about expectations and it was likely the expectation of the December Fed hike that was helping the dollar,” Hafeez says.

“The actual hike, then, would naturally reset those expectations and would lead to a ‘buy the rumour, sell the fact’ dynamic in the dollar. Indeed, the dollar has followed a pattern of trading relatively well into Fed hikes, but selling off after.”

Essentially, the Fed — like other major central banks in recent years — has become so good at priming markets to expect a change in policy that by the time the change is actually delivered it’s close to fully priced.

With markets expecting a hike, they naturally position for it as well, creating a scenario where rather than buying on the actual increase they take profit on prior gains, selling the dollar instead.

It’s happened time and again, as seen in the chart.

Another consideration is every rate increase brings the Fed closer to finishing its tightening cycle, coming at a time when other major central banks are either starting to, or about to start, lifting interest rates.

For a market that is more interested in what will happen in the future rather than today, it helps explain why so many currencies gained against the dollar last year despite the Fed being one of the few major central banks who were actually lifting interest rates.

Given that markets are already expecting US interest rates to rise two or three times this year, according to most economists, that means those expected changes are largely factored in by financial markets.

Something to consider, especially given the dollar’s recent track record following rate hikes.
