ROME (AP) — Archaeologists have unearthed the petrified remains of a harnessed horse and saddle in the stable of an ancient villa in a Pompeii suburb.

Pompeii archaeological park head Massimo Osanna told Italian news agency ANSA that the villa belonged to a high-ranking military officer, perhaps a general, during ancient Roman times.

  • A bombshell report by Ben Detrick of The Ringer has linked Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo to five anonymous Twitter accounts.
  • The accounts were critical of 76ers players, including Joel Embiid, other NBA executives, including former 76ers GM Sam Hinkie and current Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri, and seemingly leaked previously unreported medical information about a player.
  • The 76ers confirmed that Colangelo was behind one of the accounts but denied any knowledge of the others.
  • All five of the accounts are said to have strong similarities in who they follow and language used.
  • Several of the accounts reportedly had their status changed within hours of The Ringer reaching out to the team and Colangelo.

In a bombshell report by Ben Detrick of The Ringer, Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo has been linked to five anonymous Twitter accounts that were critical of the team’s players, criticized other NBA executives, and even appeared to reveal the private medical information of a player.

The five accounts were discovered by an anonymous source who noticed a “bunch of weird tweets,” and then used an analysis tool that linked the accounts based on “commonalities including similarities in who the accounts followed and linguistic quirks,” according to Detrick.

A high-ranking Russian politician has compared US president Donald Trump to former German dictator and Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler.

The comments came after the US, UK, and France launched missile strikes on Syria Friday night, for which Russia, who has had military presence in the country since 2015, has warned there will be “consequences.”

According to The Guardian, Alexander Sherin, Russia’s deputy head of the state Duma’s defence committee, said Trump “can be called Adolf Hitler no. 2 of our time because, you see, he even chose the time that Hitler attacked the Soviet Union,” referencing the strike time of around 4 a.m.

Sherin also described the air strikes as “a targeted threat against Russia.”

Russia’s ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov has also issued a statement lashing out against the US-led coalition campaign, whose military action is a response to an apparent chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of people earlier this month.

“The worst apprehensions have true,” ambassador Anatoly Antonov said. “Our warnings have been left unheard. A pre-designed scenario is being implemented.

“Again, we are being threatened,” Antonov continued. “We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences. All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris.”

The statement went on to say that “insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible.

“The US — the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons — has no moral right to blame other countries,” Antonov added.

He claimed that Tillerson “did not speak to the President this morning and is unaware of the reason.”

In a few hours, Goldstein followed his boss into retirement.

Prior to his firing, Goldstein told CNN that Tillerson learned of his termination through one of Trump’s tweets, which was shown to him by an aide. Trump later told reporters he didn’t discuss the impending ousting with Tillerson “very much,” but indicated that the decision did not come out of the blue either, saying the two had “talked about this for a long time.”

It is unclear what exactly set Trump off. While speaking about his motives, he referred to long-standing disagreements over the Iran nuclear deal, of which Tillerson was a proponent.

Exactly when the final decision was made is also up for speculation. AP reported, citing White House officials, that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly phoned Tillerson on Friday to tell him that Trump wanted him to go. Tillerson reportedly wanted to discuss it with the President in person, and cut his Africa trip short for that reason.

According to another account of the events, Kelly was not so clear about the president’s intentions when he spoke to Tillerson. The New York Times reported, citing a senior State Department official, that Kelly merely told Tillerson that he “may get a tweet” and advised him to wrap up his Africa tour.

As the chain of events unfolded, another two State Department officials, Tillerson’s chief of staff, Margaret Peterlin, and Deputy Chief of Staff Christine Ciccone both filed resignation letters, CNN reported, citing senior State  Department officials. Confirming the reports that Tillerson and his staff were surprised by the sudden government reshuffle, it cited a Tillerson aide who said that “everyone is totally shocked.”

In his farewell remarks, Tillerson did not mention the reason for his departure, only stating that he received a call from the president “a little after noontime from Air Force One,” which was several hours after the tweet was posted.

Goldstein is being replaced by State Department spokesperson and former Fox News host Heather Nauert.

Nauert has fully embraced Washington’s anti-Russian narrative, courting controversy for snubbing Russian journalists during a press briefing earlier this month and unleashing a massive anti-Russian campaign on Twitter, blaming Moscow for Syria’s east Ghouta standoff, praising Oscar-winning “Icarus” for shedding light on the alleged state-sponsored doping system in Russia and commending Ukraine for taking a stand against Russian energy giant Gazprom in defiance of its contract obligations.

While the timeline surrounding Tillerson’s ousting is still disputed, some commentators linked it to the statement he made on Monday, regarding a case of former double agent Sergey Skripal, poisoned by what the UK claims is a military-grade nerve gas that originated from Russia. Tillerson said that he has “full confidence” in the UK government’s assessment that Russia is “likely” behind the attack.

Attempts to link Tillerson’s fall from grace to his criticism of Moscow, however, are inherently flawed, since his replacement, former CIA Director Mike Pompeo, is known to be particularly hard on Russia. Appointed as the CIA chief in November 2016, Pompeo has repeatedly called Russia a major threat to the US’ interests.

A US Air Force lieutenant-colonel has been removed from service on charges of fraternization and negligence, making him the latest high-ranking officer in the US armed forces to be demoted or dishonorably discharged over scandalous or criminal behavior.

1. Denis Paquette

Lieutenant-Colonel Denis Paquette was commanding officer of the 722nd Expeditionary Air Base Squadron at the Sidi Ahmed Air Base in Tunisia, a secret African location for US drone operations.

He had an affair with an 18-year-old female airman. Paquette reportedly attempted to ‘get closer’ to her, and ran the base like a “frat house.”

A military judge found him guilty of negligence and cleared him of alcohol-related charges and abusive sexual contact. He was dismissed from service with the equivalent of a dishonorable discharge.

2. Joseph Aucoin

Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin was relieved as commander of the 7th Fleet in August, after the collision of USS John S. McCain with an oil tanker which left 10 dead. The tanker crash came in the wake of the USS Fitzgerald crashing into a cargo ship, killing seven sailors.

3. Jeffrey Sinclair

Brigadier-General Jeffrey Sinclair faced a number of sexual misconduct charges in 2014, including forcible sodomy, for his behavior in a relationship with a captain. At first the relationship was consensual, but Sinclair later reportedly forced her to perform oral sex on him and threatened her.  

In March 2014, Sinclair was fined $ 20,000 and avoided jail time after his original trial fell apart. The former deputy US commander in Afghanistan was demoted to lieutenant-colonel, however.

4. Abu Ghraib scandal

Staff Sergeant Ivan Frederick II was the highest ranking official charged with torture and abuse of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy, dereliction of duty, maltreatment of detainees, assault and committing an indecent act. Frederick was sentenced to eight years in prison but was released in October 2007, after serving just four years. He was also dishonorably discharged. 

Other members of the military received non-judicial reprimands over the scandal.

Janis Karpinski, commander of the 800th Military Police Brigade, was demoted to colonel and received a letter of reprimand.

Colonel Thomas M. Pappas, commander of the 205th Military Intelligence Brigade, was relieved of command, received a letter of reprimand and was fined $ 8,000.

5. ‘Fat Leonard’ bribery scandal

Nine officers of the Navy’s 7th Fleet in the Pacific were involved in a years-long bribery scandal with military contractor “Fat Leonard” Glenn Francis and his Singapore-based firm, Glenn Defense Marine Asia.

It cost the Navy tens of millions of dollars in over-billed invoices as the officers involved “actively worked together as a team to trade secrets for sex, serving the interests of a greedy foreign defense contractor, and not those of their own country,” acting US attorney Alana Robinson said in March.

Rear Admiral Bruce Loveless was demoted two stars when he was investigated in 2013. Captain Daniel Dusek received a 46 months sentence for his role in the bribery scandal in 2016.

White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon’s financial disclosure report shows he earned between $ 1.3 and $ 2.3 million last year, according to the New York Times. Much of that money came from companies backed by Republican mega-donors Robert and Rebekah Mercer.

Bannon disclosed $ 191,000 in consulting fees from Breitbart News Network, where he previously worked as executive chairman before joining the Trump campaign. He also disclosed $ 125,333 in consulting fees from Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm that specializes in predicting the political leaning of voters through “psychographic” profiles based on details of their consumer habits, social media, and other traits.

Last year, Bannon was paid $ 167,500 in consulting and directing fees from Glittering Steel, a production company launched with Rebekah Mercer that financed “Clinton Cash,” a documentary film about corruption in the Clinton Foundation.

The film was based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name written by Peter Schweizer, the senior editor-at-large at Breitbart.

The strategist also reported $ 61,539 in salary from the Government Accountability Institute (GAI), a conservative nonprofit organization. In total, Banon made at least $ 545,000 last year between those four entities, all of which are backed by the Mercer family.

The Mercer father-daughter duo originally supported Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) but switched when Trump won the nomination for the Republican party. Rebekah then became a member of the Trump transition team’s Executive Committee, where she voiced her opinion on nominees and helped mold the new administration.

In his disclosure, Bannon notes that he intends to sell his assets in Glittering Steel and Cambridge Analytica. His most valuable asset was Bannon Strategic Advisors Inc., which was valued between $ 5 million to $ 25 million, and he reported earnings of $ 493,836 from the entity. Bannon also reported as much as $ 2,250,000 across several bank accounts and $ 10.5 million in real estate.

JARED KUSHNER

Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner’s disclosure shows he and his wife Ivanka Trump have property and investment holdings worth as much as $ 741 million, according to the New York Times.

While the couple previously sold off many of their assets when they became White House employees, they are still holding on to many of their real estate holdings, including the Old Post Office that was converted into Trump Hotel in Washington DC.

Kushner’s disclosure says that Ivanka earned between $ 1 million and $ 5 million from the DC hotel between January 2016 and March 2017, valuing her stake between $ 5 million and $ 25 million.
