Believe it or not, Awkwafina is the only the second-ever Asian women to host Saturday Night Live, and the first in 18 years (following a December 2000 hosting stint by Lucy Liu). That much was acknowledged during one of the most endearing monologues in recent memory — but did the material that followed do the Crazy Rich Asians star justice?

After an above-average premiere headlined by Star Wars‘ Adam Driver (watch highlights here), the second episode of Season 44 was something of a mixed bag. Awkwafina wasn’t given much to work with, playing the straight person in a series of mostly forgettable sketches, while the very best the show had to offer came in the cold open and Weekend Update. So without further ado, my ranking of the best, worst and somewhat in-between sketches…

BEST: BRETT KAVANAUGH POST-GAME
For much of the country, Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court was no laughing matter. Yet the post-confirmation cold open worked as a searing commentary on the GOP, as a celebratory Mitch McConnell claimed the Kavanaugh vote was a win for everyone from “white men over 60… to white men over 70,” and Kate McKinnon’s Lindsey Graham told CNN, “We made a lot of women real worried today, but I’m not getting pregnant so I don’t care.”

BEST: EMERGENCY ALERT
This week’s presidential alert paved the way for this amusing short, which found Kate McKinnon’s street jogger tossing her phone into a vat of boiling hot dogs, and Leslie Jones’ business woman asking if “September 11th was a month ago” was “even information.” Best of all was the reveal that this was actually an ad for a lesser-known cell phone provider.

BEST: WEEKEND UPDATE
Colin Jost and Michael Che were once again on-point with their Kavanaugh commentary, while Pete Davidson’s response to Kanye West’s pro-Trump rant was easily the best thing of the night. Slightly less successful was the latest Eric and Donald Trump Jr. bit. While Alex Moffat’s ability to lose himself in the character of Eric still leaves me in awe (it’s never not funny watching him react to a new toy), the schtick is wearing thin.

HONORABLE MENTION: LATE NIGHT BATTLE
Not only was I impressed by Mikey Day and Chris Redd’s dance moves, I was tickled by musical guest Travis Scott’s cameo as Lil’ Bang Bang, who capped an otherwise mediocre dance battle sketch by busting a move to the Final Jeopardy score.

HONORABLE MENTION: BABY SHOWER
Cecily Strong’s hilarious performance as a former high school cool girl saddened that she’s the last single, childless gal among her friend group elevated this otherwise subpar skit.

WORST: SO YOU’RE WILLING TO DATE A MAGICIAN
If this was a tryout for Leslie Jones to succeed Thompson as the host of myriad game- and dating-show sketches following his inevitable departure, she won’t be getting a callback. The only memorable thing about this dud was Jones’ inability to hold it together after the 2:45 mark.

Venom will chomp his way into theaters next month, giving Tom Hardy the chance to do yet another weird voice. While Hardy is covered in CGI goo while playing Venom, there’s a surprising amount of practical effects work in the film as well. If you don’t believe that, check out the Venom featurette below, showcasing Hardy’s work in bringing Venom to life.

Venom Featurette

I really don’t know what to make of Venom. Tom Hardy is an excellent actor, and the cast around him – Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate and more – is fantastic. But there’s something about the footage that makes this look a hold-over from a different era – the type of comic book movie that would’ve come out around the time of Daredevil or Elektra. Despite my misgivings, I will say this new featurette offers a good look at the behind-the-scenes goings-on in the film. While Tom Hardy spends a good chunk of Venom obscured by CGI, he still threw himself fully into the role. Here, we get to see all the work that goes into filming the actor as he flails around like a lunatic. Cameras were set up to track his every movement, and a special rig was built that lifted the actor into the air with the movement of the camera to illustrate Venom’s full height.

There’s a fair bit of practicality to the footage here. That’s somewhat promising, but this is also only a small snippet of footage from a larger film. That said, even if Venom turns out to be a disappointment, I have a feeling Hardy will give the film his all. He usually does. “To me [playing Venom is] exciting, because it’s a double act,” the actor said in an interview with Esquire. “The character has an ethical framework, the alien by virtue of coming from another planet doesn’t have the same ethical framework, and they have to work out how to be together so they click.” Hardy added: “It’s like acting out mental illness in some aspects, of which I have a fair understanding, having had a certain amount of mental health problems of my own, which are relevant, being an addict. So I might as well fucking use it.”

Venom opens on October 5, 2018.

The incident occurred on the very first corner of the opening lap of the Belgium Grand Prix and claimed several drivers.

Leclerc was saved by the halo on his car, an initiative which was only implemented this season to protect drivers’ exposed helmets.

“I felt the impact and looking at the image it is quite spectacular. It was lucky,” said Leclerc, whose family have close ties with that of the late French driver Jules Bianchi who died of head injuries in 2015. “I got quite a lot of messages. My mum called me quite a lot of times. Everyone was quite worried.”

As fans clamoured to get their eyes onto replays of the insane scenes at the first turn, stunning images of the crash flooded social media.

But now the most stunning footage of the incident has come to light with the official F1 account sharing a 360 view from the front of Leclerc’s Sauber.

As the race gets underway the camera rotates to face the 20-year-old driver who had started from 13th spot on the grid.

The footage shows just how lucky Leclerc was and just how close Alonso’s car came to collecting the young Monacan.

Another angle from the crash was posted to Reddit and showed a frame by frame breakdown of the McLaren soaring into the air.

As the footage slows down, you can see Alonso’s front suspension collect Leclerc’s halo before deflecting the car away.

“We can end the HALO discussion now. It will save lives,” tweeted 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg after seeing the images.

Formula One race director Charlie Whiting said the governing FIA would be contacting Sauber for more information about any damage to the halo. “I think what is clear is the significant tyre marks on both the chassis and the halo,” he said.

“It looks like it’s had a fairly hefty whack.

“It doesn’t take much imagination to think that the tyre marks would have actually been on Charles’ head. It would be a bit of a miracle if they weren’t, had the halo not been there.”

The incident was caused by Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg who entered the first corner far too heavy and had to slam on his brake before he slammed into the back of Alonso which launched him into the air.

Hulkenberg was handed a 10 place grid penalty for next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix for causing the collision that brought out the safety car. “It was nasty, it doesn’t look great. It’s my bad, my mistake. Today it went wrong quite badly. I’ll accept it and move on,” he said.
