Eric Berger Update: This week, Ars staffers from across the country gather together in real life for our annual meeting, Technicon. We’re supposed to be talking more than typing, so we’re resurfacing a few classic Ars stories just in case the front page gets lonely. This one, which originally ran on November 22, 2015, centers on a few aviation/space pioneers and feels particularly apt for Veterans Day weekend. It appears unchanged below. The last three flightworthy WB-57 airplanes in existence arrayed themselves on a runway near Johnson Space Center in Houston this past week, as if they were dinosaurs brought to life. The long-winged aircraft look something like prehistoric creatures, too, measuring just a stubby 21 meters long compared to an overly broad 37.5-meter wingspan. It had been four decades since as many as three of the great, superannuated birds soared together. But then they did. One by one, the WB-57s slowly rolled down the runway at Ellington Airport and then began a slow climb upward into resplendent clear, blue skies. They flew again, thanks to a restoration program by NASA to bring a third WB-57 back from its boneyard. “It’s quite a day,” Charlie Mallini, who manages the WB-57 program for NASA, told Ars.
Behind two goals with the score clock ticking down and the quietest the Bell MTS Place has been for a long time, the Jets received a power-play goal from Patrik Laine 49.6 seconds remaining. It was too little, too late.
The Nashville Predators prevailed for a 2-1 victory to knot the second-round series at 2-2 in a quite different game than the first three that produced a whopping 25 goals.
The Jets suffered their first loss at home in this playoffs and ended their 13-game win streak in their building, dating back to Feb. 27.
The last time they were beaten at home was by the Predators, who performed like the team that won the Presidents’ Trophy team in the regular season. They slowed down the speedy Jets with a tight-checking game to reduce their open ice and the Predators did a much better job holding onto the puck.
The Jets failed to adjust. Instead of more dump-ins with speed, they tried to stickhandle their way through the Nashville defenders.
“Take a look at the very first shift of the game,” Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said, referring to a hard rim around the boards that resulted in a good chance from Mark Scheifele. “A little more of that, a little less of the one [trying to get] through four.”
Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne also played better. He had something to prove after the first three games in this series, checking in with an ordinary .890 save percentage.
Yes, he had some luck in his 32-stop effort. Rinne made a first-period save off the butt-end of his stick before forward Ryan Hartman helped with a save of his own late on Winnipeg’s Adam Lowry. But Rinne’s solid game will help restore his own confidence and faith from his teammates.
As good as Rinne was, however, Predators defenceman P.K. Subban was that much better. He dished out a punishing hit on Lowry and scored a power-play goal on a 51-foot blast through a Viktor Arvidsson screen for a second-period power-play goal and a 2-0 lead.
It was a frustrating first three games for the Predators and their coach Peter Laviolette. Nashville outplayed the Jets in the series opener and blew a three-goal lead after 20 minutes in a 7-4 loss to Winnipeg in Game 3.
Laviolette also took issue with a couple of incidents in Game 3. He felt there was a missed tripping penalty on Predators defenceman Ryan Ellis before a Jets goal and a cheesy high-sticking penalty on Subban that led to another Winnipeg goal.

So what did Laviolette come up with for Game 4? He inserted 36-year-old veteran Scott Hartnell, whose only postseason action this spring was in Game 5 against the Colorado Avalanche in the first round two weeks ago. Also in the lineup was defenceman Yannick Weber.
Laviolette was hoping Hartnell could disrupt Byfuglien’s game. The big Winnipeg defenceman was dominant on Tuesday with a two-goal outing.
Regina’s Hartnell kept Byfuglien at bay, for the most part, holding the big man to only two shots on goal in Game 4.
These two warriors go back a long way, butting heads in the 2009-10 Stanley Cup final when Hartnell was with the Philadelphia Flyers and Byfuglien was with the championship-winning Chicago Blackhawks.
“His experience calmed everybody down,” Rinne said of Hartnell. “He was one of the key guys for us on the forecheck and making smart plays.”
The Jets can travel to Nashville for Game 5 on Saturday with the knowledge that they still had enough opportunities to pull this one out. The fourth line, as well as the defence pairing of Tyler Myers and Ben Chiarot, were caught standing around on the Predators opening goal from Hartman in the first period and that had the Jets chasing their opponents all evening.
The other nice development for the Jets was seeing their goal-scoring leader in the regular season, Laine, score his first in the series and first since Game 2 of the five-game opening round series against the Minnesota Wild.
There was no doubt Laine was frustrated, especially after firing eight shots on goal in Game 3. The Jets need Laine to provide more offence if they want to see another victory dance from Byfuglien.

Holding down a career and having a child can put a strain on life but many mums make a success of it
IN A few weeks’ time New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will have her first child. She’s thought to be just the second world leader to give birth while in office, after Pakistan’s former prime minister the late Benazir Bhutto, who had a daughter, Bakhtawar, in 1990.
And although the pregnancy came as a surprise to her and her partner, TV presenter Clarke Gayford, 40, she’s not at all phased.
In fact Jacinda, 37, is planning to take six weeks’ maternity leave before getting back to running the country – with childcare help from her partner.
“Women multi-task all the time, I just happen to do it in a more public way,” she said.
“I can only do everything because I have help, by which I mean Clarke: he’s going to be the primary care giver.”
But is it really possible to have it all? There are more working mothers in the UK than ever before, with the latest Office for National Statistics figures showing that there are 4.9 million women with dependant children in employment.
Yet research suggests women still do 60 per cent of the “unpaid work” in the household, including childcare, laundry and cooking.
Here, two women tell us how they juggle their jobs and being a mum.

Yes says Charlotte McMillan
Charlotte, 46, runs a business and lives in Highbury, north London, with her husband Andrew, 47, a lawyer.
They have 12-year-old twins Robert and Sholto, and son Archie, nine.
When I heard that Jacinda Ardern was pregnant, I was really happy for her.
I’m half-Kiwi so I like to keep up with politics in New Zealand.
Like the rest of the world I’m eager to see how she manages to juggle being a world leader and having a baby.

Charlotte McMillan says ‘it’s definitely possible to have a career and be a mother’
It’s definitely possible to have a career and be a mother but it’s hard work.
I should know: I was a partner in a multinational law firm when my twins were born in 2006.
I took six months’ maternity leave and after that I was back in the office full time.
My husband was also a partner in a law firm so we had a nanny to help out during the day.
At first I had romantic visions of being able to breastfeed the twins in the morning before work and in the evening when I got home.
But I soon realised it wasn’t going to be as simple as that.
A week after I came back to the office I was working on a deal that was very time-sensitive.
I knew I was going to have to stay all night to get it finished.
In the middle of negotiations, I had to run home to breastfeed the twins and then come back to the office.
Thankfully the client was understanding.
We didn’t finish the deal until six o’clock in the morning and when I got home, my husband was sitting on the sofa with one twin in each arm, looking shell-shocked.
It was then I realised it wasn’t going to be as easy as I’d hoped.
But despite the difficulties we managed to make it work.
One of the things that helped me was letting go of control.
Before children I was used to having control over everything in my life, but when I became a mum that all changed.
I had to realise that I wouldn’t be able to do a perfect job at work and be a perfect mother too.
I could still do a great job at both but I had to accept that sometimes the beds wouldn’t be made in the morning and I might not always be there to collect the kids from school.
I carried on working as a lawyer until 2014, when I started my own business – an online scrapbooking website called StoryChest (storychest.com).
Getting it off the ground has meant long, gruelling hours and I work now just as hard as ever before. But I’m happy to do it.
Family will always be important to me but being a mother doesn’t mean giving up on your dream career.

NO Says Jo Higgins
JO, 44, is a life coach and lives in Leicester with her husband Jonathan, 46, a publisher.
They have two daughters Evie, 13, and Isla, seven.

Jo Higgins said she ‘felt guilty’ for quitting her job years after becoming a mum
It’s great to hear that Jacinda Ardern is having a baby while being Prime Minister.
But there’s no denying it’ll be hard to do both.
I did “have it all” for 10 years after my elder daughter was born.
I loved my job in the marketing department at underwear brand Bravissimo and I carried on working there when I became a mother.
Over the years I was promoted to director and before long I was on a six-figure salary, working 60 hours a week.
I was excelling in my career and I still made time to see my family too.
I used to tell people I was the happiest person I knew.
But there were times when it was difficult.
I had a C-section with my second daughter and I remember collapsing at the end of a meeting under the weight of a giant pile of papers I was carrying.
GETTY
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is pregnant with her first child
I hadn’t given my stomach time to heal properly and it put my back under too much pressure.
I staggered out to my car with the help of a colleague and managed to get home.
I carried on working and because I loved my job, it made the juggling worthwhile.
But after a while I realised that having a demanding career and a family meant I didn’t see my friends.
And after a decade of being a working mum I realised I wanted more time with my family too.
I was the main breadwinner and I felt guilty for quitting my job but it was the best decision I could have made.
After I left I took three months off and it was only then I realised how stressed I’d been.
I retrained as a life coach and now I run my own business called Life Atlas Coaching (lifeatlascoaching.com).
It means I can be more flexible about the hours I work and move things around to suit my family.
Although my husband and I split the childcare equally, being a coach has made me realise we’ve still got a long way to go before we reach true equality for men and women.
I see a lot of my female clients trying to be the perfect mother and the perfect employee.
But when I ask what their partner does to help with childcare, they look at me blankly.
Either they haven’t spoken about sharing the childcare with their partner or they don’t trust them to do it.
I think we need to do more as a society to help men and women feel comfortable taking equal responsibility.
It’s fine to be a stay-at-home mum or to focus on your career, but you have to work out what matters most to you.
For me it was being able to eat dinner at the table with my family every night. It might seem like a small thing but it makes a big difference.
Now I eat with my family each evening. I still have a career but no matter what, my children always come first.

This is one event you definitely won’t want to miss.
Ski and snowboard slopestyle sends competitors one at a time down a terrain park constructed out of snow, filled with massive jumps and metal rails. It’s only the second time this event has been showcased on a world stage, as it made its debut at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
The competitors get two qualifying runs, and two final runs to show off their best, most creative, and most athletic tricks to the judges. The highest single run score wins in the finals.
The competitors have three rail sections, and three jumps continuously linked in each run.
Unlike the other freestyle disciplines, like aerials and moguls, where conforming to a rigid expectation of what the judge’s demand puts you ahead of the pack, slopestyle skiing — in a testament to its X-Games roots — is inherently creative and forces riders to think outside-of-the-box.
Take a look at the insane course below, courtesy of US Snowboard Team member Ryan Stassel’s Instagram:

Watch out for Oystein Braaten, the 22-year-old Norwegian skier, to throw down some of the most technical tricks in the rail section. Braaten’s a heavy favorite to take the gold in ski slopestyle.

This is where skiers like Sweden’s 26-year old Henrik Harlaut — one of the most creative of the bunch — will showcase their style by choosing unique lines through the course.

Mitch Marner’s linemates know that at any moment he can create a scoring chance. Tuesday he seemed to do it every time he touched the puck.
Marner set a new career high for points in a game with a goal and three assists as the Toronto Maple Leafs downed the Carolina Hurricanes 8-1 in a rare afternoon tilt.
“He’s got that confidence going right now,” said forward James van Riemsdyk, who scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season with Marner earning the assist. Van Riemsdyk’s goal was the 20,000th in franchise history.
“He’s a guy that wants to be successful and produce, takes pride in that,” he added. “He’s always making good plays and passes and me and (Tyler) Bozak are on the end of those.”
Marner had a goal and two assists in the first period alone against Carolina, also setting up Bozak as Toronto took a 4-1 lead into the first intermission. He picked up his fourth point of the night in the third on a Patrick Marleau goal.
“Just felt like I was skating, whole line in general,” said Marner. “If we want to be successful that’s what we have to do.”
“Him getting that goal helped get his confidence back and he’s a really good player when he’s confident. Fun to play with him,” added Bozak.
Tuesday’s 2 p.m. ET start was scheduled by the league to kick off the second century of NHL hockey. The first NHL games were played on Dec. 19, 1917, including a 10-9 win by the Montreal Wanderers over Toronto.
The Maple Leafs faced Carolina in commemorative jerseys with “Arenas,” an early name for the team, on the front.
Leo Komarov, Kasperi Kapanen, William Nylander and Connor Carrick also scored for the Leafs (21-13-1), who snapped a three-game slide.
Frederik Andersen made 32 saves for the win while Bozak matched Marner by adding three assists.
Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes (14-12-7) as Scott Darling stopped 27 shots in defeat.
“They were better in every area, their special teams set the tone early. Some of the plays and decisions we made with the puck were less than perfect…they were quicker than us and it showed,” said Carolina coach Bill Peters.
“We looked like a mentally fatigued team.”
Toronto was playing its fifth straight game without star centre Auston Matthews because of an upper-body injury.
The Leafs offence had mustered just four goals in their last four games before exploding against the Hurricanes.
“We got a scouting report on every goalie but you’d think we didn’t have one for the last month, sometimes the puck goes in and sometimes it doesn’t,” said Leafs coach Mike Babcock.
A turnover at the Leafs blue line turned into Toronto’s first short-handed goal of the season, as Komarov chose to keep the puck in transition on a 2-on-1 and beat Darling upstairs 2:52 into the game.
It didn’t take long for the Leafs to double their lead as Marner skated over the Carolina blue line on a power play and beat Darling with a wrist shot from the top of the circle at 5:33, ending a 15-game goal drought.
Skinner cut Toronto’s lead in half with a knuckler at 9:07 that eluded Andersen, but van Riemsdyk restored the two-goal lead for the Leafs just 1:27 later, putting home a rebound with the man advantage.
Marner kept on coming and created Bozak’s goal to make it 4-1 at 13:28.
The second period belonged to Andersen, who came up big more than once to keep Toronto ahead.
First he made a highlight-reel save midway through the period, sprawling out and getting the paddle down on Skinner to keep it a 4-1 game despite being tangled up with a Carolina skater at the same time.
Then he went post to post to stop a one-timer from Elias Lindholm with two minutes to go.
Marner set his new career high for points in a game when he assisted on Marleau’s goal at 9:25 of the third, then Kapanen added his second goal of the season only six seconds later to make it a five-goal cushion for the Leafs.
Nylander scored with a snap shot glove side on Darling with just under six minutes to play, while Carrick added a power-play goal with 1:27 to go.
“This one’s just embarrassing, at least if you get to (overtime) you can say you showed up and put forth a good effort,” said Hurricanes defenceman Justin Faulk. “Sure hope we can move on fast.”

Connor Brown made the most of his move up the lineup to keep the Toronto Maple Leafs’ hot start rolling.
Brown scored the game-winning goal in the third period as the Maple Leafs beat the Washington Capitals 2-0 Tuesday night in a rematch of their first-round playoff series last spring. Toronto, which handed Washington its second consecutive loss since losing top defenceman Matt Niskanen to injury, has won five of its first six games.
“We feel good about our team,” said Brown, who poked a rebound past Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby with 14:07 left for his second goal of the season. “We’re really excited about what we have. We feel like we’re getting better defensively and I think we’ve got a lot of options that can score goals. That helps you win night in, night out.”
Game Wrap: Andersen shuts out Capitals in Leafs win1:29
Frederik Andersen stopped all 30 shots he faced as the Maple Leafs shut out the Capitals on the road for the first time in 73 regular-season meetings. Nazem Kadri added an empty-netter with 22 seconds left to seal the victory.
“These are the big games, the good teams you get up for,” Andersen said. “You want to kind of measure yourself a little bit, especially since they beat us last year in the playoffs. I think it’s fun for us to come down here and get a little bit of revenge.”
Brown moved up to the third line alongside James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak and scored when he corralled the rebound of Morgan Rielly’s point shot and beat Holtby.
“I liked that Brownie worked hard, he was good on the penalty kill and he got to the net when they got the puck there,” coach Mike Babcock said. “It was great to see him get to the net and be rewarded.”
The Capitals leaned on Holtby to make a handful of his 28 saves in the first few minutes as the Maple Leafs dominated. Their defence was better than in an 8-2 loss at Philadelphia on Saturday, but the power play went 0 for 3 and Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Washington’s top stars couldn’t cash in on limited opportunities.
“It’s pretty hard to play without puck right now,” Kuznetsov said. “We have to work harder away from the puck.”
Forcing defenceman John Carlson to play 27:33 with Niskanen out until at least Nov. 7 with an upper-body injury, the Capitals couldn’t muster the kind of offensive firepower they’ve been known for in previous seasons. Carlson thought the team effort was better, but the results simply weren’t there.
Hip Check: Sidney Crosby’s hockey IQ is over 10000:44
“We gave up a lot of chances — too many from what we’re used to,” Carlson said. “I think we’ve got to score goals. You’re not going to win if you don’t score.”
Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs didn’t score at their NHL-leading pace, something Babcock would like to fix moving forward. But a young team that lost in six games to the Capitals in last year’s playoffs will take victories in tight games however they can get them.
“When it’s crunch time and you’re getting close to the end of the year like we were last year, we were right in the mix, you look back on these kind of close games and you think about the value that’s in these points,” Rielly said. “To get these ones and to get a good feeling in our room and get rolling a little bit is a great feeling. But it’s only six games. We’ve got a long way left to go, but those points do feel good.”
