Whoever said that a college degree isn’t worth the paper it’s written on never considered becoming an engineer.

Typically, you need a bachelor’s degree to do that, and whether you want to go into architecture or aerospace, you don’t need any more education to earn around $ 100,000 a year as an engineer.

Don’t want to become an engineer? Don’t fret. There are plenty of other high-paying jobs that you don’t need to go to grad school to pursue.

According to the latest data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, these are the 25 highest-paying jobs that require no more education than a bachelor’s degree.

Each has a median annual salary of at least $ 99,000.

Exam results come out in August, making it a stressful month for students to say the least.

Many will be wondering whether they got the grades to get into the university they wanted, and it can feel like the end of the world if you don’t do as well as you thought you would.

However, whatever your results, you can still have a great career and a well-paying job. In fact, figures from the Office of National Statistics show that 29% of graduates earn less than those who entered the workforce straight from an apprenticeship rather than getting a degree.

Student fees are currently capped at £27,750 for three years of study, which has left many young people wondering over the past few years whether a university education is really for them or not.

New data from Indeed — the world’s number one job search site — shows there are many roles which don’t require a degree that pay more than the UK average wage.

“Our figures suggest there is still a ‘graduate premium,’ with graduates frequently earning more than those without a degree,” said Mariano Mamertino, an EMEA economist at Indeed. “But while having a degree typically increases your earning potential, the cost of gaining one is substantial. As a result many school-leavers will be asking themselves whether the sums of doing a degree add up.”

The site analysed the salaries offered by tens of thousands of job adverts and came up with a list of five which pay substantially more than the UK average salary of £28,000.

Here they are, ranked in ascending order by average salary.

5. Pilot — £32,691.

To learn how to fly a plane, you need to get a Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (ATPL), and you’ll also need good physical fitness, good hearing and eyesight, and colour-normal vision.

The training can be quite pricey — £60,000 and £90,000 in total — but the most experienced airline pilots can earn £140,000 a year.

The National Careers Service website says being a pilot requires excellent hand-to-eye co-ordination, great communication skills, leadership skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.

 

4. Executive assistant — £33,150.

Having a personal assistant role at a senior executive level is a lot more than organising a CEO’s diary. You’ll also be in charge of travel arrangements, email management, and a few accounting responsibilities such as financial management and client billings.

Some positions even require you to speak several languages.

The executive will likely rely on you to sort out the majority of their life, so it’s no surprise it pays quite well. Depending on the position and who the executive is, you could earn upwards of £50,000.

Fitness managers are responsible for overseeing the administration and organisation of a gym or fitness club. This includes both employees and visitors to the gym, so you need to have good personal skills.

Different gyms and clubs have many different activities and facilities, so the job can range quite a bit. Some will be in charge of a spa and pool as well as the gym floor, whereas others are making sure the exercise classes are running on time.

Either way, you’re working behind the scenes of the club and making sure everything is running smoothly, so it’s a lot of responsibility.

Maintenance managers oversee the maintenance of buildings, so the job can range a lot depending on the area you would be overseeing.

Generally, they are in charge of any repairs of the property, including machines and mechanical systems. In a hotel, for example, they are in charge of ensuring everything is functioning in the kitchens, laundry rooms, and guest rooms.

Other jobs can range from finding people to paint and repair drywalls to noticing and finding professionals to do electrical, heating, and air-conditioning work. They also might need to do the odd job themselves.

Without a degree you can work your way up to a construction manager role if you’ve got experience in a relevant job, like being a surveyor or site supervisor.

The job involves working for building companies and specialist subcontractors, and overseeing what goes on at a construction site. This includes talking to architects, surveyors, and engineers, hiring staff, buying materials, and maintaining the health and safety of the site.

Highly experienced construction managers can earn upwards of £70,000 per year.

In a trend that is similar to Silicon Valley’s wage levels catching up to Wall Street’s, average salaries in China’s information technology industry have exceeded those in the financial sector for the first time since 2008, according to data from China’s statistics agency.

Average annual income in China’s information transmission, software and information technology fields last year was 122,478 yuan (HK$ 139,114) per person, surpassing average annual income of 117,418 yuan in banking, brokerage and insurance, China’s National Bureau of Statistics said.

It was the first time that the technology sector’s wage level was higher than finance’s since industry-specific wage data became available in 2008.

Finance had been the top-paying industry in China for eight straight years, causing jobs with state banks to be known as “gold rice bowls.” But those gold rice bowls have been losing their shine as revenues and profits stagnate. China’s big four state-owned banks quietly slashed a collective 19,000 jobs last year.

For the past eight years, the financial industry has topped the list of businesses with the highest average annual income, closely followed by the information industry. In 2015, salaries in the two industries drew closer together, with financial employees earning 114,777 yuan per year and tech people 112,042 yuan.

Meng Canwen, the national statistics agency’s chief statistician, said salaries have increased in the tech industry largely because of consistent and rapid growth.

Financial-industry income has been affected by salary restrictions on senior bank officials and by the stock market’s downturn, he added.

Agriculture, forestry, husbandry and fishing had the lowest annual incomes last year – 33,612 yuan, or almost half the average annual salary for all industries.

Industries seeing highest income growth last year were public administration, social security and organization, education, health and social work, according to the statistics.

Even straight out of school, earning an MBA means a healthy salary bump for graduates, especially in lucrative industries like consulting.

And with increasing demand for management consultants, elite firms are doling out hefty compensation packages to stay competitive and attract top talent. In fact, at many places, the base pay for MBAs starts at $ 140,000 — more than $ 60,000 higher than the starting salaries that many candidates earn right out of college. On top of that, salaries for these positions are on the rise, up as much as 5% in the past year. 

Management Consulted, a company that helps candidates land consulting jobs, compiled the top salaries earned by graduates in their first year out of business school at 18 leading consulting firms. To determine these figures, it culled through data from clients, spoke with industry insiders, and pored over real offer letters from readers.

It’s important to note that these represent maximum salary packages, not average compensation. Typically, only the top employees receive the full amount, with most employees earning significantly less.

It’s true that there’s a lot of money to be made in finance. But which positions really rake in the big bucks?

In order to find out, LinkedIn collected data using its Salary tool, which asks verified members to submit their salary and collects data on wages.

The only positions featured on the list are those that receive at least 20 salary reports from LinkedIn members in the US. The jobs are all taken from the banking, capital markets, financial services, insurance, investment banking, investment management, venture capital, and private equity industries.

Occupations were then ranked based upon reported median base salaries.

These 15 positions all make a median base salary of over $ 150,000 a year.
