  • Netflix has given a big boost to some of the world’s highest-paid comedians.
  • The majority of the comedians on Forbes’ annual list have worked with Netflix this year or last, from Jerry Seinfeld to Chris Rock. 

 

Netflix has focused on stand-up comedy the last few years, and will even debut 47 new stand-up specials on New Year’s Day.

Many comedians have seen big paydays thanks to Netflix, and that’s evident in Forbes’ list of the year’s highest-paid comedians in the world, which was released this week. 

The majority of the comedians on the list have starred in Netflix specials this year or last, such as Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle.

Gabriel Iglesias released a Netflix special in 2016 called “I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry,” and will star in another sometime in 2019 called “One Show Fits All.” Sebastian Maniscalco will also star in a special on Netflix that premieres January 15, called “Stay Hungry.”

Forbes made the list based on estimated, pre-tax earnings from June 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018. Below are the top 10, with those who starred in Netflix specials this year or last in bold:

Netflix released Gaffigan’s fifth special last year, called “Cinco.” This year, he passed on Netflix to release a new special, “Noble Ape,” to a variety of on-demand services because it would be  “available to everyone at the same time,” he told Business Insider in August. “You didn’t just have to have Netflix.”

Ricky Gervais — $ 25 million

Netflix

This year, Netflix released Gervais’ first special in seven years, called “Humanity.” Forbes estimates that he made $ 15 million for “Humanity.”

Oakland Raiders fans awoke on September 2 refreshed from a long holiday weekend only to have their blood pressure skyrocket upon hearing the news: Oakland had sent Khalil Mack, the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and by far the franchise’s brightest talent, to the Chicago Bears. Not since February’s move of cornerback Marcus Peters by the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams, for pennies on the dollar, had a trade rocked the NFL quite like this.

The Bears, in turn, made Mack the highest-paid defender in NFL history, on a deal worth an average of $ 23.5 million per season that offered $ 90 million in guaranteed money.

The final days of summer have always been an expensive time to do business in the NFL, as teams look to lock up star players well into the future. Mack’s deal followed one Aaron Donald signed with the Rams for an average of $ 22.5 million per year, one that had made him the highest-paid defender in NFL history — for all of two days. And we can’t forget the granddaddy of them all, Aaron Rodgers’ $ 134 million extension with the Green Bay Packers on August 29, which made him the NFL’s highest-paid player ever.

Aside from the fact that they can all afford to pick up the dinner tab for the foreseeable future, these players have something quirky in common. As it turns out:

Per sports contract tracker Spotrac, when sorting contracts by guaranteed money — the best measure of how much an NFL player truly earns — eight NFC players come out on top: Matt Ryan, Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Mack, Donald, Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo and Alex Smith. The two AFC players, Andrew Luck and Derek Carr, come in at No. 5 and No. 10, respectively.

Why is this, when the salary cap for all players in the league is the same? And where exactly is the AFC spending its money?

One reason the NFC seems to be going all in is that, well, it is. The AFC is extremely top-heavy. In the past 15 years, only five teams have represented the conference in the Super Bowl: the New England Patriots (seven times), Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts. The NFC has sent 10 teams to the big game in that same span, during which the conference has trounced the AFC six times.

“The consistency of the Patriots appears to have really affected many of the AFC teams’ ability to think and build intelligently over the past decade,” says Michael Ginnitti, Spotrac co-founder and editor.

If you want to win now in the NFL, you need an excellent quarterback, and the supply of them in the NFC may be why those teams are spending so much.

The relative well-roundedness in the NFC has gotten only more pronounced in recent years. Half the conference has a legitimate chance at making the conference championship this season — so NFC general managers are ready to spend big to make it happen for their team.

If you want to win now in the NFL, you need an excellent quarterback, and the supply of them in the NFC is why Pro Football Focus NFL analyst Mike Renner thinks those teams are spending so much.

“Seemingly everyone in the NFC has a legit quarterback or a high draft pick,” Renner tells OZY. Teams are “more willing to go all in when that’s the case.” In the AFC, meanwhile, once you get past New England’s Tom Brady, Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger and the Los Angeles Chargers’ Philip Rivers, the QB talent wanes. The conference has a “history of franchises that have continually whiffed on QBs,” says Renner.

Ultimately, the quarterback position “drives all of this,” explains Ginnitti. And the teams that have made defenders the showcase of their spending — such as the Bears with Khalil Mack and the Rams with Aaron Donald — also, no coincidence, have young quarterbacks who won’t demand major money in the near future but can still hang with the big dogs.

But fret not, AFC fans — the time for your team will come. You’ll just need to wait for Brady to retire first.

It used to be that the biggest movie star with the best-performing movie would be guaranteed the top spot in Forbes‘ list of highest paid actors. But times, they are a-changin’, as the highest paid actor of 2018 didn’t even star in a movie last year, and several of the top spots went to actors who worked exclusively with streaming.

George Clooney has been named the highest paid actor of 2018, raking in $ 239 million from June 2017 to June 2018. And it’s all thanks to tequila.

According to the Forbes World’s Highest-Paid Actor list for 2018, George Clooney managed to edge out Dwayne Johnson for the top spot, despite not appearing in any major movies. So how did he manage to make a pre-tax income of $ 239 million?  *Drum beat* Tequila!

Clooney sold his liquor company, Casamigos Tequila, for up to $ 1 billion last year, handing the Money Monster actor a nice, fat paycheck that guaranteed that he didn’t need to star in a movie in between attending the royal wedding and directing the 2017 flop Suburbicon (which was completed before the window of time that Forbes surveyed for its 2018 list).

Clooney’s career-high earnings pushed out Johnson for the top spot, who many predicted would get the title this year if just for the man’s manic work ethic, which saw him starring in a whopping five (!) movies in the last year including the insanely successful Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. But Johnson did nab the No. 2 spot, raking in $ 124 million pretax. Unexpectedly, Johnson’s massive social media following was also credited for his high placement, allowing him to “negotiate an extra seven figures atop his standard contract for promotion, helping nearly double his 2017 earnings.” If the historic Red Notice bidding war is any indication, Johnson’s hot streak will continue into 2018 too.

Robert Downey Jr. takes the No. 3 spot with $ 81 million while his Avengers: Infinity War co-star Chris Hemsworth‘s $ 64.5 million scored him No. 4 (no other Chris can beat the Marvel two-punch of Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War). Meanwhile, Jackie Chan rounds out the top 5 with $ 45.5 million, proving that the Chinese box office is nothing to sneeze at. International stars Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan also take spots in the top 10.

Interestingly, two of the higher slots in the list, Adam Sandler (No. 8) and Will Smith (No. 6) didn’t appear in major movies last year either — at least, that were released in theaters. Both Sandler and Smith reaped the lucrative benefits of partnering with Netflix, which gave them massive paydays for films like Sandy Wexler and Bright, respectively. This could be the beginning of Netflix becoming a major force on the Forbes’ list, as more people choose the couch over the theater. Except for the ongoing disparity between Hollywood’s top-paid actresses and actors, times are a-changin’ indeed.

College basketball coaches can make a lot of money.

As revenue deals increase and schools compete to stay atop their conferences, both long-tenured coaches and impressive journeymen can come to make a ton of money with just a few years of repeated success.

That said, in order to get to the top of the coaching world in terms of compensation, you have to have been in the game for a long, long time.

A recent report from USA Today ranked the top-paid coaches in college basketball, including what’s known about their bonuses and the cost of a potential buyout.

25. Mike Anderson — $ 2.6 million

The team has been eliminated before the Sweet Sixteen in seven of their past 10 appearances in the tournament.

23. Steve Alford — $ 2.6 million

It would take Lionel Messi — whose current salary of £82 million a year could make him a billionaire in just 12 years — just two hours and 56 minutes to earn what the average Brit took home in 2017 (£27,600).

Messi also earns a whopping £14,039 just for playing 90 minutes on the pitch.

The calculator also compares the lifestyles athletes enjoy on their massive salaries to what you’ll experience on an average one.

For example, on the average UK salary of £27,600, it would take you eight years to buy an average-priced house in the UK (£232,530), while Roger Federer could buy 205 average-priced houses in one year.

One thing to know: Johnson, a former first overall pick, was traded from St. Louis to Colorado midway through the 2010-11 season and later agreed to an extension that will bring him to the back end of his career. Landeskog, a native of Sweden, won the Calder Trophy in 2012.

  • She outearned Adele ($ 69 million) and Taylor Swift ($ 44 million). 
  • Swift was the highest-paid female musician in Forbes’ 2016 list with $ 170 million. 

 

Beyoncé’s hit album “Lemonade,” and her subsequent world tour for the LP, have made her the highest-paid female musician in the last year, according to Forbes’ annual list.

From June 2016 through June 2017, Beyoncé earned $ 105 million in pretax income, according to data collected and analyzed by Forbes. She outearned Adele, who came in second with $ 69 million, and Taylor Swift, who stands in third with $ 44 million. 

Swift was the highest-paid female musician in Forbes’ 2016 list, pulling in $ 170 million off the strength of her massively successful album “1989” and its world tour. Beyoncé was the fifth highest-earning woman in music last year with $ 54 million. 

This year, Beyoncé claimed the top spot after “Lemonade” became her sixth No. 1 album and her “Formation World Tour” grossed a quarter of a billion dollars, according to Forbes. She also owns the Ivy Park fashion line, along with various other business ventures. 

Rounding out the top five this year were Celine Dion, who came in fourth with $ 42 million, and Jennifer Lopez, who earned $ 38 million.
