Police in Savannah, Georgia, are looking for a prankster who put googly eyes on the statue of a revolutionary war hero. “It’s no laughing matter,” the city stressed, and was taken seriously by absolutely no-one.

The Savannah city government on Thursday issued a call to public to help it catch the perpetrator, who vandal-eyezed the monument for Nathanael Greene, a major general in George Washington’s Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War.

The statue had its own carved eyes covered with a pair of popping googly eyes. The Savannah Police Department were alerted to the makeover and removed the cartoonish eyes on Thursday. No damage to the statue has been reported.

However, since the monument is fenced off, the joker is now facing trespassing charges. Police said it had been reviewing CCTV footage to determine the culprit.

The incident might have gone unnoticed but for the Savannah government, which posted the image of a googly-eyed Greene on its Facebook page, with the post immediately going viral and reaching national news.

“It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter, in fact, it’s a crime.”

In contrast to the serious tone of the publication, the commentary section has been flooded with non-stop wisecracking, as the majority of the locals apparently took the practical joke rather lightheartedly.

“We ain’t snitches,” Valerie Cervoni wrote.

“Whoever posted this, does not understand how the internet works,” another user quipped.

Hashtags #googlyeyebandit and #googleeyesmatter, meanwhile, were launched.

History-savvy commentators suggested that it might be the handiwork of Lord Cornwallis, Greene’s British nemesis, whose troops the American general defeated at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in March 1781.

Some pointed out that the amount of attention the googly-eyed stunt is getting is unnecessary and will only trigger copycats. Others had to make it about race.

“Turns out that I’m nowhere near white enough to be outraged by this,” Kara Bryant Greathouse wrote.

And some reminded the officials there were actual problems to be worried about next door.

“There’s literally a town that’s completely leveled right now and we are worried about $ 2 eyeballs that barely stick on a good day?” Ashley Jones wrote.

While eastern Georgia has been spared the brunt of the hurricane Michael, the southwestern part of the state is reeling from the calamity that battered it with gusting winds and even spawned a tornado. An 11-year old girl was killed by a tree that fell on her home in Seminole County.

Sir Alex Ferguson latest: Health update as Man Utd hero's family prepare to make statement https://briefnews.eu/sir-alex-ferguson-latest-health-update-as-man-utd-heros-family-prepare-to-make-statement/ https://briefnews.eu/sir-alex-ferguson-latest-health-update-as-man-utd-heros-family-prepare-to-make-statement/#respond Sun, 06 May 2018 09:33:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sir-alex-ferguson-latest-health-update-as-man-utd-heros-family-prepare-to-make-statement/

The 76-year-old, who led Manchester United to 38 trophies in his 26 years in charge, was rushed to hospital after suffering a fall at home.

An ambulance was called to his house in Cheshire to take him to Macclesfield District General.

He was then taken under a police escort to be treated at the Salford Royal.

It’s understood an update from Fergie’s family or the hospital will come today.

A Manchester United statement said: “Sir Alex has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage. The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.

“His family request privacy in this matter.”

His son Darren Ferguson missed Doncaster Rovers’ final league game to be by his father’s bedside.

A Doncaster statement said: “Darren Ferguson will not be at Saturday’s game due to family reasons. Darren asks for privacy, and will provide an update through the club during the week.”

Ferguson retired as United boss in May 2013 and was on the pitch at Old Trafford last Sunday.

There he presented Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with a farewell trophy alongside Jose Mourinho.

Fans and clubs last night took to Twitter last night to pay tribute to the United legend.

United winger Jesse Lingard wrote: “Thoughts and prayers, Sir Alex.”

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany said: “Hang on in there Sir Alex. Thoughts are with the family and close ones.”

While Michael Carrick tweeted: “Absolutely devastated to hear about Sir Alex being unwell in hospital. All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Be strong boss.”

Former No.2 Mike Phelan tweeted: “You’ve won more than most and if anyone can you can boss.”

Ferguson was admitted to hospital in 2003 for a heart irregularity and underwent electric shock treatment.

A club statement at the time said that he had ‘received treatment in hospital following a routine check-up several months ago which revealed a minor heart irregularity’.

Ferguson revealed after that he had had a pacemaker fitted.

Edwin van der Sar won the Champions League with Ferguson in 2008 and was granted compassionate leave by Ferguson after his wife suffered a brain haemorrhage.

He said: “Devastated about the news about Sir Alex, knowing all too well about the situation ourselves.”

Hero's welcome awaits Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir https://briefnews.eu/heros-welcome-awaits-tessa-virtue-and-scott-moir/ https://briefnews.eu/heros-welcome-awaits-tessa-virtue-and-scott-moir/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 04:59:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heros-welcome-awaits-tessa-virtue-and-scott-moir/

Hundreds of fans filled up the tiny arrival section of the airport in London, Ont., belting out the national anthem and waving Canadian flags to welcome ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

The pair signed flags, signs and Tim Hortons cups in what will be their last Olympic homecoming, as they retire from professional ice dancing after winning two sets of gold medals at the Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Their first-place wins in ice dancing and team figure skating in South Korea brought their total Olympic medal count to five, making them the most decorated figure skaters in the history of the Games.

Similar cheering crowds greeted Canada’s athletes in Vancouver, too, where gold medallists Cassie Sharpe and Patrick Chan returned Monday.

In London, Moir and Virtue were shocked by the number of people who came out to meet them.

“We’re tired but this is so exciting for us, we’ve been thinking about this moment being back home since we won the gold medal,” said Moir, who is from nearby Ilderton, Ont. “It’s been unbelievable, we haven’t come down from Cloud 9.”

Moir said representing Canada had only gotten more special in his third Olympics with Virtue.

“None of the magic had worn off,” said Moir, who together with Virtue was Canada’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony. “If anything, you feel more patriotic and we understand more what it means to represent Canada and wear the flag on our back.”

“It’s special and sentimental because it’s been 20 years in the making and it’s the culmination of it all competitively,” added Virtue. “It couldn’t have gone any better for us.”

Asked when they think they’ll come down from the high of winning, Virtue replied: “do we have to?”

The duo has been melting hearts since they claimed gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games, but this year they garnered a whole new group of fans who swooned over their chemistry on the ice. Some have suggested they might be in a romantic relationship — a rumour the athletes have been denying for years.

Resident Cassie Caranci, who came to the airport early to get a spot at the front of the packed arrival section, said she has been following the skaters’ careers since they started.

“It was really important for me to see them come here,” Caranci said. “Seeing them in the last Winter Games and then seeing them make their comeback, I’m a proud Londoner.”

Chan, Sharpe’s golden return

A crowd of lively fans dressed in red, waving Canadian flags and singing the national anthem flocked to Vancouver’s airport Monday to greet Canadian Olympic gold medallists Cassie Sharpe and Patrick Chan, as well as other athletes returning from Pyeongchang.

Chan said it was just beginning to sink in that he’d won gold in the team skating event.

“It’s a nice feeling,” the Toronto skater said with a grin, adding that he plans to leave it in his suitcase for a little while.

“I’ll take a look at it every once in a while. It’s sometimes better to keep it away and then just enjoy it once in a while.”

Chan, 27, is now set to retire, although he said he would continue to be involved in skating and perform at shows. He also hopes to eventually open his own skating school that will bring together Vancouver-area coaches and athletes.

“I’ve waited for so long, in a way,” said Chan, who recently relocated to Vancouver. “It’s a new beginning and a rebirth.”

Sharpe, from Comox, B.C., also said she was excited to be back in her own bed, cook herself some food and “just hang out.” Her gold medal in freestyle skiing halfpipe was tucked into the pocket of her Team Canada sweater.

“It’s phenomenal,” she said. “It feels even better to hold it on Canadian soil. It feels good bringing it home.”

“Personally, it’s a bucket list thing. How many people get to say they won gold at the Olympics?” she added. “But then of course, feeling the pride and feeling everybody from Canada being so proud of you and being so happy that you’re bringing it home to them … it’s incredible.”

Agosta will return to police force in May

Women’s hockey veteran Meghan Agosta was wearing her silver medal as she arrived in Vancouver. She said it was “unfortunate” that the final game against the U.S. ended in a 3-2 shootout loss.

“When it comes down to a shootout, anything could happen,” she said. “But I’m so proud and happy with every single one of us girls in that room, we showed a lot of character, a lot of resilience.”

Asked about her teammate Jocelyn Larocque’s initial refusal to wear her silver medal on the ice, Agosta said it was the “heat of the moment.

“The decision that she made, it wasn’t any ill will,” said Agosta. “She didn’t mean to disrespect anybody. We train so hard and we went there for gold. It was unfortunate that we ended up losing, but Jocelyn Larocque, she’s an amazing leader, an amazing person, a great teammate.”

Agosta took a year off from her job as a Vancouver police officer to train for the Olympics. She said she returns to the force in May.

Bobsled pilot Chris Spring of Priddis, Alta., who didn’t bring home a medal, said he was excited for his fellow athletes who did. He said he was driving well during the two-man race but made a poor choice of runners on the first day, and his efforts to be aggressive on the second day didn’t pan out.

“Huge credit to the coaching staff and everyone behind the scenes, the mechanics,” he said after arriving in Vancouver.

“I was excited to leave,” he added with a laugh. “If you have a great Games, you’re excited to come home and share your results with Canada here, with family and friends. If you don’t have a great result at the Games, then you’re also pretty excited to get home.”

‘Doesn’t feel real’ for Kaetlyn Osmond

Figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond arrived home in Edmonton on Monday afternoon, her bags a little heavier than when she left for Pyeongchang a month ago.

The Olympian was greeted by a crowd of family and friends at the Edmonton International Airport. When she pulled her gold and bronze medals from her backpack, they erupted in cheers.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” she said. “I think it will take a few days home before it all sinks in. But the time away has been incredible and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”

Avengers Infinity War: Does new picture mean Thanos will KILL this hero's entire family? https://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-does-new-picture-mean-thanos-will-kill-this-heros-entire-family/ https://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-does-new-picture-mean-thanos-will-kill-this-heros-entire-family/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 03:39:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-does-new-picture-mean-thanos-will-kill-this-heros-entire-family/

In the good old-fashioned days, a picture used to be worth a thousand words. Although for the pedants out there, the original 1927 quote actually made it “ten thousand.”

All of that was before the internet. And fan theories.

Now, any Star Wars, Marvel or DC picture that is posted on social media is poured over for clues, leaks, reveals and predictions of what is coming next.

Fans are already worried that Thanos will kill more than one major Marvel superhero in his ruthless quest to collect all the Infinity Stones.

The latest Instagram post from one Avengers Infinity War star already has some convinced that it mean his whole one screen family is also going to die.

Actual personal relationships are becoming fewer and fewer as most blockbusters move awy from romantic subplots. Even fewer give any attention to family dynamics.

When they do it is usually to add extra pathos to a dramatic or heartbreaking scene.

Many fans were confused about thr rather time-consuming interlude with Hawkeye’s clean-cut family in Age of Ultron. Was it merely an attempt to give one of the less rounded (some might say ‘much less interesting’) characters some kind of depth and dimension? Or was it simply a set-up for something awful to come.

Jeremy Renner’s latest picture seems to imply the latter…

The actor posted an image of his new Hawkeye haircut – a rather radical mohawk.

This set alarm bells ringing for some.

In the Marvel Ultimate comicbooks, Hawkeye’s family is slaughtered and he cuts his hair and goes on a vigilante rampage for revenge.

The Russo brothers and Marvel boss Kevin Feige have all warned fans to expect major losses and heartbreak in Infinity War. Will Thanos kill Hawkeye’s family and send him on a dark spiral?

NOt all fans are expecting the worst.

Another pointed out it could be a rebellious reaction to be locked up by Tony Stark and the US government in Civil War for siding with Captain America.

Either way, perhaps Hawkeye will finally become a little more interesting…

Champion U19 basketball team gets hero's welcome home https://briefnews.eu/champion-u19-basketball-team-gets-heros-welcome-home/ https://briefnews.eu/champion-u19-basketball-team-gets-heros-welcome-home/#respond Tue, 11 Jul 2017 02:25:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/champion-u19-basketball-team-gets-heros-welcome-home/

R.J. Barrett couldn’t help but take a friendly jab at his father when asked about his impact on his basketball career.

The 17-year-old son of Rowan Barrett — a former standout on Canada’s men’s basketball team — arrived at Toronto’s Pearson Airport on Monday night with a gold medal around his neck from the FIBA under-19 World Cup in Cairo.

The Canadians toppled Italy 79-60 in Sunday’s final after upsetting the powerhouse United States 99-87 a day earlier, handing the Americans their first loss at the tournament in six years.

R.J., from Mississauga, Ont., averaged 22 points per game (and poured in 38 against the U.S.) to earn MVP honours while leading Canada to its first ever world title in any age group.

“I mean, I don’t think my dad can say he beat the U.S. so I’ve got that on him,” R.J. told a throng of reporters, glancing at his father a few feet away with a sly grin.

The elder Barrett had been beaming moments earlier as his son made his way through a crowd of chanting fans, friends and family to embrace him. He didn’t seem to mind the jab, but R.J. switched gears anyway, speaking instead about the lessons he’d learned from his father.

“With my dad, when I was growing up I saw the amount of work that he put in,” R.J. said. “There’s always people coming behind trying to take your spot and I don’t want anyone to take my spot.”

Potential No. 1 pick

A star on the rise, the younger Barrett could be the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA draft.

He called the FIBA gold medal — rectangular in shape with hieroglyphics on the back as a nod to the host nation — the top honour he’s achieved in his basketball career to date. But there’s a lot more he wants to achieve.

“Pretty simple — go to college, go to the NBA, be a star,” Barrett said of his goals.

Head coach Roy Rana believes his top player has the tools to do that.

All smiles and clutching the FIBA trophy while speaking with reporters, Rana showered Barrett’s gold-medal performance in praise.

“When he steps on the floor he performs at such a high level,” Rana said. “We’ve seen some special performances in world championships before. … This one will go down as one of the best at any FIBA event.”

Greeted by loud cheers

The team’s flight was delayed nearly three hours, but when it arrived they were greeted by loud cheers from friends, family and fans.

Children waved small Canadian flags as the players walked through the arrivals area.

Rana said the historic win, over 24 hours old, still hadn’t sunk in. He said his team will enjoy their success but not rest on it.

“Expectations have changed,” he said. “The pressure is heavier but maybe that’s a good thing. They embraced that.”

Both Rana and Barrett spoke at length about the significance of their win against the U.S., a team that had dominated the event, and every other, for decades.

“No one really believed (Canada could win),” Barrett said. “Everyone thought, ‘yeah the USA is going to come and beat us’ but we proved what we could do.”
