John and Paul had one of the most famous songwriting partnerships in music history. But while they introduced the world to many of The Beatles’ greatest songs, it wasn’t always an easy ride during their creative process. Now Paul’s official biographer Barry Miles, who is working on The People’s Beatles Project to crowdsource an archive of Beatles’ fan pictures, has revealed what he thinks is a little-known fact about the pair’s relationship. Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, Paul’s friend since 1965 said: “The songwriting relationship and friendship was so deep that it transcended any bickering over money or management.”

He continued: “Paul said that on a number of occasions they’d be in the middle of an argument and John would just pull his little granny glasses down the end of his nose, look over the top and say, ‘It’s only me’ and then go back to shouting and blinding and swearing.”

“You can’t go through something like Beatlemania without being totally close to the other members.

“For all those years they were in that strange bubble, just travelling around the world.”

Miles also claims John’s wit was actually mistaken for rudeness used as a defence mechanism.

He added: “John was always a prickly, difficult character and a lot of the so-called rapier wit was really just old-style rudeness really – because he’d had a really quite dysfunctional upbringing.

“Liverpool was a tough city to grow up in back then, maybe still is.

“So he had a lot of defences and what’s seemed like an argumentative, distant relationship toward the end was still there.”

He said: “There was one incident at the height of Beatlemania in 1965 when he actually drove right down through France to the south coast in disguise.

“He had a false moustache and had his hair combed differently.

“In fact, he was turned away from a French club because he didn’t look cool enough!

“And then he came back as a Beatle and they couldn’t do enough to usher him in and give him the best table.”

The final scene saw DCI John Luther (played by Idris Elba) battle it out with Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), trying desperately to convince her the fight with George Cornelius was over.

But in an epic plot twist no viewer expected, Alice fell from the top of some scaffolding straight to her death, leaving Luther at the top in utter shock.

However, does Alice’s downfall predict the end of Luther and the series altogether?

It comes after lead actor Idris, spoke about the show’s future and how the producers were looking into moving the series from television to the big movie screen.

During a conversation with Radio Times, the actor who plays the maverick detective revealed: “I don’t think we’re going to do too many TV versions of it; I think the next step is to make a film.”

This certainly makes sense because season five’s storyline could easily translate into a movie.

“We’ve got a skeleton of an idea for a film, [but] I’m not allowed to say too much but I can say that this season has the film very much in its sights,” Idris continued.

“If there is a film, then it will be somehow connected to this season.”

Those watching the drama at home took to Twitter to discuss the concluding episode and in particular made reference to Alice’s exit.

Many fans noted it was very similar to a scene in season one hinting the show has come full circle.

One said: “So #Luther finished exactly how it first began. Luther was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of Henry Madsen who fell from a heigh. Alice has fallen the exact same way with Luther being arrested again. #FullCircle” (sic).

“It all ended with the same scene it started with #Luther,” another added.

A third theorised: “Hmm, let’s see. The end scene with Alice was a copy of the very first scene of Luther. The symbolic removal of the coat. This is the end. Shame. #Luther.”

“My heart is broken. Alice is dead; just like Henry Madsen in S1. Luther is arrested for Halliday’s murder! How can @bbcluther do this to my heart, my Alice/Luther loving heart?! Nah, this is too much! #Luther,” someone else wrote.

If the BBC were to consider a six television series of the fan-favourite show, what could possibly be in store for Luther?

After his arrest, it is possible he will be found guilty for his involvement in several murders.

Whilst he didn’t kill anyone directly this season, several people were put into compromising positions, which ultimately saw their death because of the decisions Luther made.

Take George Cornelius’ (Patrick Malahide) son Alistair, who was killed by Alice.

Luther could have stopped that death if he had just captured and arrested Alice.

In turn, Alice’s actions caused George to turn on Luther and take DS Benny Silver (Michael Smiley) as bait to lure the detective towards a hitman.

If Benny hadn’t been captured, he would have never been in a position to offer his life up for killing.

In turn, Luther wouldn’t have then decided to seek revenge on George and go after the hitman.

Although it was in fact George who killed the hitman it seems Luther will be blamed.

Furthermore, DS Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) was also innocently killed by Alice as a way of getting back at Luther for not finishing off George.

Viewers have presumed Luther will be held responsible for his colleague’s death therefore there is a great possibility Luther is going to serve time.

Will viewers see his struggle on the inside or will he escape and make a life on the run?

Luther season 5 is available to catch up on the BBC iPlayer.

Curling rocked in 2018: Here's why https://briefnews.eu/curling-rocked-in-2018-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/curling-rocked-in-2018-heres-why/#respond Wed, 26 Dec 2018 11:52:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/curling-rocked-in-2018-heres-why/ The 2018 curling season marked a massive shift in the landscape of the sport. Notably, the rest of the world has caught up to Canada in the roaring game.

From the United States men's gold to South Korea's women's silver and Canada's teams failing to reach the podium, there was no shortage of drama on the pebbled ice at the Winter Olympics.

But there were magical moments on the ice for Canadian curlers in Pyeongchang and beyond. Here's a look around the rings this past year.

10. Brad Jacobs miracle shot

Brad Jacobs called the shot and he made the shot, although it looked nearly impossible. In a game just a couple weeks ago at the Boost National in Conception Bay South, N.L., Jacobs was forced to throw a miracle shot with his last rock.

The 2014 Olympic champion hit a highlight-reel double-raise in-off that found the button to force an extra end against Niklas Edin. Jacobs went on to steal two points for the win.

9. Canadian curlers set world record

The numbers are staggering: 392 ends of curling, 6,272 stones thrown, a final score of 450-237 — and most importantly, one world record.

A group of 10 Ontario curlers just received word a few months ago that their game that lasted 105 hours six minutes 51 seconds — spanning from the end of September into October — has set a new Guinness World Record.

These 10 Ontarians now hold the record for longest ever curling game at 105 hours, six minutes and 51 seconds. (Brittany Pearce for CBC Sports)

8. Alberta bonspiel goes awry for an Olympic champ

The curling foursome of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby was kicked out of the Red Deer Curling Classic in November for "unacceptable behaviour" that included being "extremely drunk."

All curlers later apologized, including Fry, a 2014 Olympic gold medallist who has since stepped away from Team Brad Jacobs for self-improvement. It's expected Fry will return with the team in the new year.

7. Brad Gushue repeats at Brier

It took Brad Gushue 13 tries before winning his first Brier. He then followed it up with another Brier win as Team Canada playing in Regina.

Gushue downed Alberta's Brendan Bottcher 6-4 in the final for a second straight Canadian title. Gushue's win in the final was his 123rd all-time at the Brier. Now the team is looking for three-straight in 2019 and becoming the first to do so since Randy Ferbey's Alberta team did it in the early 2000s.

Watch highlights from Gushue's win:

6. Jennifer Jones crowned world champion

The 2018 women's world championship was a roller-coaster ride for Jennifer Jones and her team, who were competing in front of a home crowd in North Bay, Ont. And the championship game was just as turbulent.

The back-and-forth final came down to an extra-end in front of a tense, capacity crowd. Without hammer, Sweden's Anna Hasselborg missed a pick shot, giving Jones the win. It was her second women's world championship title. Jones won her first world championship a decade earlier in 2008.

5. Canadian teams hits 'rock bottom' at Olympics

There will be no Canadian curling summit but there will continue be some serious introspection after Canada's disappointing curling performance at the Olympics.

Both Rachel Homan and Kevin Koe's teams failed to reach the podium. Before this, every Canadian curling team had medaled at the Olympics since the sport was reintroduced to the program in 1998. Ben Hebert called it "rock bottom" after losing to Switzerland in the bronze medal game.

4. 'Garlic Girls' captivate home fans

Very quickly at the Olympics it was becoming clear that South Korea was fixated on curling and its women's team. In fact, Team Kim had remarkable success to make it all the way to the gold-medal game against Sweden. The "Garlic Girls" were overnight rockstars after capturing silver — the country's first-ever curling medal.

Despite losing to Sweden, all four members of the team basked in the raucous cheers raining down on them at the end of the game. The fans kept cheering as tears streamed down the faces of the curlers. They so badly wanted gold for their country but raised the profile of the game immensely in South Korea.

In November it was reported South Korea's sports ministry was conducting a joint investigation with the national Olympic committee into allegations of abuse by the so-called Garlic Girls. In the letter, the team accused former Korean Curling Federation (KCF) vice-president Kim Kyong-doo of verbal abuse and team coaches of giving unreasonable orders and subjecting their private lives to excessive control.

3. Canada's resilient Paralympic rink

The Canadian wheelchair curling team quickly earned the nickname "The Comeback Kids" after showing a brilliant knack for mounting come-from-behind wins, but they also became known for their smiles and positivity on the ice.

Marie Wright, Dennis Thiessen, Ina Forrest and Mark Ideson wanted gold badly for Canada. After losing the semifinal in heartbreaking fashion, they responded with an emotional win in the bronze-medal game.

Watch skip Ideson discuss his Paralympic experience:

2. Curling's Miracle on Ice?

John Shuster and his American curling team made history when they won gold at the Olympics. It was the country's first gold medal in curling at the Games. Many have called what they did a curling 'Miracle on Ice.'

In the championship game, Shuster scored five in the eighth to secure victory. But perhaps more importantly and impressive was Shuster's two wins over the Canadians on the way to winning it all. Never before had an American team defeated Canada at curling in the Olympics — Shuster did it twice, once in the round robin and then in the semifinal.

1. Lawes and Morris make curling history

Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris weren't even a team two months prior the Olympics. They practiced once, for about 30 minutes in Winnipeg, before the Canadian mixed doubles trials in Portage la Prairie, Man.

Their dreams of making it to the Olympics with their foursomes were dashed and they didn't have a lot of time to feel sorry for themselves. They quickly found the perfect chemistry for golden success.

Their second chance at Olympic glory came in the form of mixed doubles, which made its debut at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang. They seized the moment defeating Switzerland 10-3 in six ends.

Harvard Is Scoring Big in the NFL. Here's Why https://briefnews.eu/harvard-is-scoring-big-in-the-nfl-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/harvard-is-scoring-big-in-the-nfl-heres-why/#respond Sat, 01 Dec 2018 05:33:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/harvard-is-scoring-big-in-the-nfl-heres-why/

During a Week 3 NFL game in sunny Tampa Bay this season, Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick connected with tight end Cameron Brate for a four-yard touchdown. That same week, in Kansas City, San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk took a pass 35 yards for a touchdown.

Back in Boston, these plays no doubt made Tim Murphy smile. After all, the Harvard University head football coach had groomed all three players to succeed at the NFL level, and they aren’t letting him down.

Harvard has long enjoyed a global reputation as the apex of academic excellence, as an institution students dream of attending, from India and Indonesia, Paraguay and Pakistan alike. Now, the school is showing another side of its success story. Harvard is enjoying an unprecedented level of NFL success. In 2014, there were three Harvard players on the NFL’s opening day rosters. To open this season, that number has ballooned to eight, with a ninth player signed to a team’s practice squad.

No matter what the FCS school, NFL teams always want to find the best players, wherever they are.

Matt Mano, former NFL scout

These eight Harvard players in the NFL comprise more than half of the Ivy League’s total representation of 15 players, with the University of Pennsylvania claiming three and Columbia, Cornell, Princeton and Yale with one apiece. In fact, Harvard sends the most players to the NFL of any Division I FCS program, which includes the Ivy League conference as well as 13 others and is less competitive than Division I FBS. That’s significant when you consider the talent other top FCS programs like North Dakota State have produced recently, such as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz and Indianapolis Colts right tackle Joe Haeg.

“No matter what the FCS school, NFL teams always want to find the best players, wherever they are,” says Matt Mano, former NFL scout with the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns. “Harvard has gotten some great scholar-athletes recently who have made their mark, and they are as well-positioned as any FCS school to attract NFL talent.”

Once upon a time, if Harvard was producing NFL players, they were likely to be offensive linemen or quarterbacks — you know, the “brainy” positions. But recent Harvard products who have made their way to the NFL are demonstrating they got more than a good education at their alma mater. Harvard has landed a collection of talented H-backs (fullback/tight end hybrids) in the pros in Kyle Juszczyk, Cameron Brate, Ben Braunecker and Anthony Firkser. The 49ers made Juszczyk the highest-paid fullback in NFL history in 2017 with a four-year, $ 21-million deal. And don’t forget Tyler Ott, currently signed to the Seattle Seahawks, who boasts skills at both tight end and … long snapper.

Firkser, now with the Titans, credits Murphy’s unique offense as the reason he chose to commit to Harvard. “During recruiting, [Murphy] showed me a lot of film on the H-back position I didn’t really know existed,” Firkser says. “As a bigger receiver, Harvard best suited my play style.”

Coach Murphy’s special breed of pass-catcher has caught the eye of NFL teams looking to get tight ends and fullbacks involved in new ways as passing continues to dominate the professional game. “The NFL has trended more toward what’s going on in college football, and that’s why you have more athletic quarterbacks, more spread sets,” says Murphy. “It’s become a much more dynamic game.”

NFL teams have found myriad uses for these Harvard pass-catchers — whom Murphy, also Harvard’s tight ends coach, describes as the “SEALs” of his system because they must be able to line up anywhere on the field.

Before Murphy took over at the helm of this program 25 years ago, NFL scouts weren’t lining up to watch its players, save for an offensive lineman here or there — guard/center Joe Pellegrini in 1982 or tackle Roger Caron in 1985. But the type of athletes Murphy and his staff have focused on recruiting has put the program on the map, opening up a well that scouts find themselves returning to year after year. In total, since the league was founded in 1920, Harvard has sent 36 players to the NFL — 13 since Murphy took his current post in 1994. It’s no coincidence that Harvard has the fifth-highest winning percentage in all of Division I this century, sitting just behind FBS heavyweight Oklahoma.

“We’ve definitely developed some credibility in that when we recommend a kid, it’s certainly worth a look,” says Murphy. “All those tight ends were not heavily recruited kids out of high school,” he adds. But they thrive in the Crimson system “because they have to adapt.” That’s an ability more NFL teams are looking for as offensive playbooks get more complicated.

However, while we can quantitatively point to a growing number of Harvard athletes on NFL rosters, Mano can’t say for sure the trend will continue to rise. “All of this has probably led to a bit of a trend, but at the same time the sample size is small,” he points out.

If Harvard is going to not only dominate the FCS in getting players on NFL rosters but actually start competing with FBS programs — where Alabama leads the pack with 43 players on NFL rosters — it starts and ends with recruiting. “We are the ultimate human resources industry,” says Murphy. “The better kids and better athletes we recruit, the more successful our program has been. We certainly believe we will have more of these kinds of athletes in the future.”

NFL scouts certainly seem to hope so.

Daniel Radcliffe: ‘I’ll probably NEVER see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ – Here's why https://briefnews.eu/daniel-radcliffe-ill-probably-never-see-harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/daniel-radcliffe-ill-probably-never-see-harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child-heres-why/#respond Fri, 23 Nov 2018 10:46:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/daniel-radcliffe-ill-probably-never-see-harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child-heres-why/

Two years ago, the eighth Harry Potter story debuted in the West End as a a two-part play.

Consistently sold out, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has now opened on Broadway.

And while some stars like Emma Watson have managed to see the show, Radcliffe himself hasn’t managed to and doesn’t ever intend to.

Appearing Late Night with Seth Meyers last night, the Harry Potter star revealed why.

The 29-year-old said: “I always give a really boring, terrible answer.

“I’m probably not going to see it, I don’t have plans to.

“Not because I think it would throw me into some sort of existential crisis of like, ‘Oh, is that what happened?’”

“It would not be a relaxing evening. I feel like I would be being watched for my reaction.”

Radcliffe said: “I feel like I want to see the show. I am genuinely intrigued and I’ve heard it’s fantastic.”

“But I just feel sitting in an audience of what will for the most of the near future be very enthusiastic Harry Potter fans might be like not a relaxing way to see a show,”

Hopefully, when’s a bit older Radcliffe might change his mind.

Nevertheless, he could always play an older Harry in a film version of the play one day.

Dancing On Ice: Phillip Schofield 'pestering' Rylan Clark-Neal to do the show – HERE'S why https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-phillip-schofield-pestering-rylan-clark-neal-to-do-the-show-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-phillip-schofield-pestering-rylan-clark-neal-to-do-the-show-heres-why/#respond Thu, 13 Sep 2018 00:55:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-phillip-schofield-pestering-rylan-clark-neal-to-do-the-show-heres-why/

Phillip Schofield is desperate to get Rylan Clark to appear on Dancing On Ice next year, despite the presenter’s reluctance to join the show.

The 56-year-old This Morning host said Rylan, 29, would be a “brilliant” addition to the series and admitted to “pestering” the Celebrity Big Brother’s Bit On The Side host.

“We all began pitching our ideas a couple of months ago for Dancing On Ice. I have hounded Rylan to take part,” Phillip admitted.

“He’s a really good skater and he’s such a great guy.”

The father-of-two, who has worked with Rylan on ITV, also joked about the star’s statuesque frame getting in the way of his skating.

“He’d be about 20 foot tall but he’d be brilliant and so funny, but he won’t do it, he says, ‘It’s too hard, I’ll hurt myself’. I keep pestering him,” Phillip told What’s On TV.

Phillip, who presents Dancing On Ice with Holly Willoughby, confirmed the return of the programme earlier this year.

He said: “We can exclusively reveal that our other show, Dancing On Ice, has been re-booked, recommissioned for another series.”

Dancing on Ice took a four year hiatus following season nine in 2014, however, it was a real hit with viewers when it returned at the beginning of this year.

Siobhan Greene, ITV’s Head of Entertainment Commissioning, said: “The show’s welcome back has exceeded our expectations and it’s been fantastic to see the audience at home loving it.

“The recommission is a no brainer and it’s brilliant for everyone involved to know it’ll be back next year.”

Love Island winner Dani Dyer is reportedly being lined up to appear on the ITV reality show when it returns in January.

According to the Daily Star, the daughter of EastEnders actor Danny could earn a whopping £100,000 if she agrees to star in the next series.

A source told the Daily Star: “They are breaking the bank to get her on board and they are hoping a six-figure deal will be enough to tempt her.”

Dani, 22, has landed a number of lucrative deals since winning Love Island this summer with her boyfriend Jack Fincham, 27.

However, with a lot of new work coming her way, the TV insider claimed Dani may not be able to commit to appearing in the eleventh series.

The insider added: “Dani is seriously considering the offer. She knows it would be a big platform for her and also a great experience.

“It’s just a case of working out if she has the time to do it.”

They concluded: “Doing Dancing On Ice is a big commitment because there are months of training before the first show even airs.”

Dancing on Ice will return to ITV in January 2019.

DVLA car tax scam WARNING – If you receive this message, here's what you should do https://briefnews.eu/dvla-car-tax-scam-warning-if-you-receive-this-message-heres-what-you-should-do/ https://briefnews.eu/dvla-car-tax-scam-warning-if-you-receive-this-message-heres-what-you-should-do/#respond Thu, 06 Sep 2018 16:05:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dvla-car-tax-scam-warning-if-you-receive-this-message-heres-what-you-should-do/

It is not an uncommon thing for con artists to send fraudulent messages to motorists posing to be the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Over the years there have been many reports of by someone claiming to be the DVLA either asking for money or offering a refund.

Car tax can be incredibly complex, especially given the fact that it has which means motorists could be more at risk of being targeted by fraudsters.

The latest scam looks fairly legitimate in the format of the words by the logo at the top of the interaction is fairly contentious.

It is stretched across the top of the banner in an unnatural way but due to the convincing nature of the text then the motorist could still be fooled.

Typically the message reads: “Security Alert.

“We would like to notify you that you still have an outstanding vehicle tax refund of £47.94 from an overpayment, despite our precious letters regarding your refund we are yet to receive your claim.

“Requests for refunds are time-limited please use the link below to complete your refund request.

“Please note: You’ll usually get the refund in 4 to 6 weeks, but it may take longer in some cases.

“You should wait 6 weeks before contacting us about the payment.

“Best Regards, Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency.”

Today, the DVLA tweeted out a number of links to articles published on their website regarding what a driver should do when they receive a message of this nature.

One read: “We’re aware that some members of the public are receiving emails, texts and telephone calls claiming to be from DVLA.

“Links to a website mocked up to look like a DVLA online service are sometimes included in the message.

“We don’t send emails or text messages with links to websites asking you to confirm your personal details or payment information.

“We strongly advise anyone who receives such a request not to open the link and delete the item.”

It also offers some advice to how a motorist can guarantee their safety when they need to deal with the DVLA.

“By using the online driving licence or vehicle tax transactions on GOV.UK you can be sure that you are dealing directly with DVLA,” the message reads.

Similarly, it is warning drivers about fraudulent websites pretending to be the DVLA.

The agency urged drivers to always be sure they are using a gov.uk website and check the URL carefully before they enter any details.
