But first: The US is now a gerontocracy. (If that term is new to you, it's "a state, society, or group governed by old people.") A new four-month investigation from our politics team looks at the disastrous effect it's having on American democracy. Deputy editor Dave Levinthal explains below.

Our elected officials are pretty old. That's hardly news, deputy editor Dave Levinthal writes.
But our government has never been older than it is today. And the gap between US leaders and those being led is historically wide — at a time when voters will soon hit the polls for another election.
Insider's new "Red, White, and Gray" project explores the costs, benefits, and dangers of life in a democracy helmed by those of advanced age, where issues of profound importance to the nation's youth and future — technology, civil rights, energy, the environment — are largely in the hands of those whose primes have passed. Here's what we found:
Plus, federal lawmakers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Lauren Boebert, and Jon Ossoff dished on why youth is an advantage in Washington, DC — and congressional staffers described the lengths to which they've gone to keep aged lawmakers focused, engaged, and sometimes upright.
You can read more of our key findings here.

Are you sure that new employee is the same person you interviewed?
According to recruiters, employers, and job applicants interviewed by Insider, an increasing number of candidates are employing stand-ins to do their job interviews for them. Then, on the first day of work, the real candidate shows up in place of the stand-in — and may have no idea what they're doing.
How some applicants are cheating the system.

Several business owners told Insider they weren't getting a return on their investments and were ready to take their ad dollars elsewhere — a shift that could dethrone a behemoth of the $ 3 billion nuptials industry.
Why The Knot is losing its dominance.

With warm temperatures and low living costs, Florida has been a haven for retirees for decades. But between April 2020 and April 2021, more than 300,000 people moved to the state, making it the top destination for people relocating states during the first year of the pandemic.
Now, rising home prices — driven in part by the influx of remote workers — are threatening America's retirement dream, and retirees are feeling the squeeze.
"After more than two months of browbeating, exhaustion, and a tireless sojourn to make my bosses happy while bingeing way too much caffeine, I was ready to walk away and give it all up."

With newer, more targeted vaccines rolling out, what is Canada doing with its originals? Some experts are concerned this latest stage of vaccine rollout could mean more vaccines are wasted as demand from other countries dwindles.

The Department of Justice and lawyers for former President Donald Trump each proposed two people to be appointed special master to review the documents seized from Mar-a-Lago, according to a new court filing.
The Justice Department proposed Barbara S. Jones, a retired judge of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York and a partner at Bracewell LLP, and Thomas B. Griffith, a retired Circuit Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and a current lecturer at Harvard.
Trump's proposed picks were Raymond J. Dearie, a former US attorney and former Chief Judge of the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and Paul Huck, Jr., founder of the Huck Law Firm and former deputy attorney general for the state of Florida.
US District Judge Aileen Cannon on Monday granted Trump's request to appoint a special master to review the records seized in the court-authorized search of Mar-a-Lago on August 8. The Justice Department appealed the decision on Thursday.
Jones, one of the DOJ's picks, was appointed to the bench by former President Bill Clinton in 1995 and retired from New York's Southern District after 17 years. The DOJ's other pick, Griffith, was appointed to the DC circuit by former President George W. Bush in 2005 and served until 2020.
As for Trump's suggested special masters, Dearie was appointed to New York's Eastern District by former President Ronald Reagan in 1986, serving as chief judge from 2007 to 2011. The other choice, Huck, served as general counsel to Florida Gov. Charlie Crist from 2007 to 2008 and was a former partner at the law firm Jones Day.
Huck is also listed as a contributor to the Federalist Society, a national organization of conservative lawyers.
It's unclear if the DOJ's appeal will be successful, but some legal experts questioned the decision to grant Trump's request for a special master.
A former DOJ official told Insider's Warren Rojas the special master's task of sorting through the documents would be "the worst thing in the world."
"No one wants this assignment," Barbara McQuade, the former US attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, said, adding: "It's time-consuming. It's thankless. You're damned if you do, damned if you don't."
She said there's really only one upside: "I suppose you get paid."
This is a breaking story. Please check back for updates.

Enlarge / LG’s OLED Flex LX3 TV won’t pick a side. (credit: LG)
If you’ve been watching display tech lately, you may have noticed an interesting feature: bendable displays. Yes, monitors and TVs that you can bend to be either flat or curved are purportedly coming out soon. The feature is meant to appease those who can’t settle on flat or curved, and most upcoming products feel similarly indecisive, exhibiting identity crises that make it hard to see where they fit… literally. Does something like this belong in a living room, office, or gaming den?
In the case of the LG OLED Flex LX3 4K TV announced Wednesday (no price or release date), the most obvious answer is the living room. It’s a 42-inch TV with a tuner, LG’s webOS, and even LG Display’s OLED Evo technology used in the LG C2 TV. The primary difference from every other TV is that this one has buttons (including buttons on the remote) for changing the screen from flat to a 900R curvature across 20 steps. That provides the potential for an extremely curved TV.
The thing is, you probably don’t want to watch curved television. Vendors tried making this a thing years ago, but as we wrote back then, curved TVs mostly accommodate people sitting pretty close to and directly in front of the TV. That’s not how most people gather ’round the heart of the living room. Living room TVs are frequently shared, with people sitting at various distances from the screen and at varying angles. But up close and centered sounds awfully similar to how most people use monitors.

Holding her hand out, Alison begged: “Can I have some sanitiser? He’s just touched me!”
“It was the Dutty wine,” Dermot tried to explain. “It was the Dutty wine.”
As Alison joked she’d put her hand in her tea to sanitise it, Dermot exclaimed “hang on,” before running off set.
“Get him out of here!” Alison shouted. “Listen, still to come we chat to Rochelle about her new documentary that’s very close to her heart.”

Phillip Schofield, 58, and Holly Willoughby, 40, were joined on the show by Janina as the fallout from Meghan Markle, 39, and Prince Harry’s, 36, interview with Oprah Winfrey, 67, continues to send shockwaves around the world. As the This Morning guest knows the Duchess of Sussex on a more personal level, the presenters wanted to get her candid take on the two-hour discussion, which aired on ITV on Monday evening. However, as she failed to go in-depth about certain matters, Phillip had to question why she was on the programme as they entered into an awkward clash.
After discussing Meghan’s mental health and the claims about racism within the Royal Family, Phillip asked his guest: “Have you spoken to her about coming on the show today?”
“She’s happy (for you) to be talking today?” he added to which Janina replied: “We’re all happy, we’re living in a new era.
“I said I don’t speak for them, I speak for myself,” she continued to which the host went on to say: “I’m not entirely sure what you’re saying because we watched that two-hour documentary.
“Which was incredibly important and very revealing and opened up on some incredibly important issues for us as a nation, for the monarchy, for the institution.
“For us to look ourselves, for them to look at themselves and think, ‘Where did we go wrong here and how can we put it right?’”

“I don’t know what your role is on coming on today,” Phillip declared as he felt they had learnt nothing new about the Duchess’ experience as a member of the monarchy.
However, before she replied, he did say he understood where she was coming from as he said: “I would expect any friend of mine to come on and do exactly what you’re doing.
“To come on the television and be unbelievably guarded about what you’re saying and practically say nothing.
“So what is your role today?” he asked once more as the tension between the pair seemed to emerge on-screen.
“You are the person in the know,” the host continued, referring to Janina’s personal relationship with Meghan.
Speaking a little more candidly, the guest said: “We watched as a wall was built around her and I can personally say, Meghan was very angry.”
Coming back to the matter of being more reserved, the guest explained: “Your producer has asked you to be here but I told them I can’t speak for them.”
“You know her that’s why you’re on,” Phillip jumped in once more as he tried to set the matter straight before the interview came to an end.
Taking to Twitter, viewers responded to the awkward clash between the pair as one wrote: “@thismorning Give up Phillip, you’re not going to go down in history as getting an exclusive from Meghan’s friend.
“What do you want to know that Meghan hasn’t already told you? Janina is too clever for you #thismorning #Meghan #janinagavankar,” they continued.
A second posted: “#ThisMorning Janina is a lovely person and would have wanted to defend her friend – they have been friends for many years.
“Of course she can’t give away too much she’d be seen as betraying her friend or giving a ‘tell all’. She just wanted to back up her friend.”
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
All is not well in Westview.
Like hedge clippers to a cement wall, WandaVision‘s Jan. 22 episode, titled “Now in Color,” really began to chip away at the Disney+ series’ pleasant sitcom veneer. From neighbor Herb’s aforementioned, unnerving yard work to the intrusion of a stubborn stork, from the topsy-turviness that Wanda and Vision’s home went through as the birth of twin boys neared to Agnes’ concerns about “home”-less Geraldine, there were more signs than ever that something is askew in these suburbs.
The character of “Geraldine” (as everyone thus far knows her) was around for the series’ biggest nod to a specific MCU storyline, as new mom Wanda remembered her dearly departed twin — after which Geraldine remarked that Pietro was killed by Ultron. That moment of sharing seemed to trigger something in Wanda, who began firmly questioning her gal pal’s identity. Next thing we know, Vision comes home to find Geraldine suddenly absent, while viewers witness the character tumbling through some sort of digital “membrane” surrounding what we know to be Westview, landing nearby a military camp set up outside the perimeter.
“The first couple episodes of WandaVision are very specific to the time period and the sitcoms,” notes Teyonah Parris, who plays Geraldine. “And what’s interesting in these first couple of episodes is that you do feel something’s amiss, something’s not quite right. Many characters are taking note of that; characters aren’t able to remember things, they aren’t able to quite put their finger on a thing.”
As suggested by the jarring final sequence, the mystery of what is really going on here — including, presumably, where Wanda and possibly Vision (who of course died in Endgame) really are, and why — will only escalate over the next six episodes.
“Watching all of that unravel, and then come together later in the series, is going to be quite a ride,” Parris assures. “And I hope that you all tune in and ride this thing with us, because it will be well worth it. I know there are so many questions in the first couple of episodes, and just no answers, but we will get to it, I promise.”
One answer that seems to be imminent — and here we again throw up a SPOILER ALERT, even though Marvel Studios announced this back in July 2019 — is the truth about who Geraldine is. Meaning, Parris is actually playing Monica Rambeau, as in the grown-up daughter of Captain Marvel’s U.S. Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau. And judging by the pendant Geraldine was wearing, Monica works for (or at least is an asset of) S.W.O.R.D. aka the galactic version of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Previewing that upcoming shifting of roles, Parris told TVLine, “For Monica Rambeau, I definitely pulled from the comics and from Akira Akbar’s performance in Captain Marvel. I was trying to see not only what Akira was doing, but also what Young Monica’s relationship to her mother, Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch), and to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), was — the influences that Monica might have gotten from those relationships. That was definitely a part of my personal process in embodying Monica.”
Alas, Parris’ freeness in talking about her actual WandaVision character (who will also appear in Captain Marvel 2) ends there. “That’s about as much as I can say about Monica until you’ve all seen more,” the actress shrugged, smiling. (With reporting by Rebecca Iannucci)

“If he dies, it sucks. It would be pointless to have him come back just to have his character kill off.”
Thankfully, new showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez confirmed James is set to play a major part in the next season, so there are hopefully no fears of Teresa’s potential love interest disappearing halfway through.
New updates have certainly been appreciated during production, which was initially put on hold due to the outbreak of the pandemic back in March.
However, now the show’s filming schedule has been back on track since November, viewers are still keeping their eyes open for any hint for when Queen of the South will actually air next year.
Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
