Gloria Henry, who played TV mom Alice Mitchell on Dennis the Menace, has passed away. She was 98.

The actress died Saturday at her home in Los Angeles just one day after her birthday, her daughter Erin told The Hollywood Reporter.

On Dennis, Henry played her most famous role, Alice, for four seasons opposite her TV husband, actor Herbert Anderson. The series ran from 1959-1963, with Jay North playing the titular role of her son.

“Many of the fans say, ‘Oh, I always wished you were my mom’ and ‘My mom was jealous of you because I wanted you for a mom,’” she said in a 2011 interview with nj.com. “Which is pretty funny, because I don’t think my own children felt that way.”

Prior to her career in acting, Henry worked in radio. She eventually signed a contract with Columbia Pictures, getting her early start in films like Sport of Kings, Keeper of the Bees and Bulldog Drummond Strikes Back.

Her career in Hollywood continued with a foray into B-Films, before she segued over to TV, with guest-starring roles in Father Knows Best, The Files of Jeffrey Jones, The Abbott and Costello Show, Perry Mason and more.

In more recent decades, Henry’s TV credits included parts in Dallas, Falcon Crest, Hunter, Doogie Howser, M.D. and Parks and Recreation, which became her final acting credit.

She is survived by her three children Jeffrey, Adam and Erin.

Reformation: Expert draws parallels with Brexit Britain

The TV historian returns to screens tonight on the BBC show Blitz Spirit With Lucy Worsley, which explores World War 2 through six survivors’ accounts. The 47-year-old has delved into the deep crevices of the past to unearth little-known information and, at times, dispel historic mistruths. In one account, Worsley sought to show the connection between Brexit and actions under Henry VIII.

Worsley described the 16th-century monarch as “fancying himself” as a King Arthur-figure of that time.

She explained that he was “quite happy” to blend the truth “with colourful myth-making from back in the mists of time” to back his claims.

The TV star argued that Henry had “an extraordinary gift” for believing in things that “just happened to be to his advantage”.

She cited his decision to “drive a wedge between England and the rest of protestant Europe” by adopting a different form of Christianity.

That time period, which lasted for eight years until 1537, was known as the Reformation.

The King, who notoriously tied the knot six times during his 38-year reign until 1547, was furious after the Catholic Church refused to dissolve his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and allow him to remarry.

Worsley investigated additional reasons that influenced the monarch to break away from not only the religion but Europe too.

In an episode of Royal History’s Biggest Fibs last year, the documentary argued that the Pope had “diplomatic and economic powers” over the nation.

The BBC show stated: “[Chief Minister Thomas] Cromwell’s actions gave Henry the power he craved but also left him isolated, rejecting Rome wasn’t only a religious matter.”

Worsley asked Professor Adrian Pabst, of Kent University, about the connection between “people talking negatively about the EU” and Henry’s mission.

She continued: “Those acts that Henry and Cromwell set up [said], ‘England is exceptional, it stands alone. It’s an empire, entirely self-contained.’”

Prof Pabst “undoubtedly” believed there was a link due to the “natural disconnect” between the UK and Europe – due to our geographical positioning.

He said: “I think there is this idea that when you’re an island… you are very special and your fate and destiny lie elsewhere.

“Clearly, that is what the Reformation and I think people having this sort of discourse today have in common.”

Prof Pabst argued that both decisions argued there was “only one source of legitimacy”, which was “the nation being represented by the monarchy”.

He continued: “That really changed the relationship hugely to other countries, to the papacy, [and] to institutions across the world.

“Because you’re essentially saying the individual has rights – his or her individual rights.

“Plus the state essentially guarantees them and nothing mediates that relationship anymore.”

Prof Pabst described “the most striking parallel” between the Reformation and Brexit was “this idea that we are better off on our own”.

He continued: “We’re better off out and essentially national sovereignty and the will of the people should prevail over anything else.”

During the Reformation, Prof Pabst claimed the narrative was about the Catholic Church “being decadent, being over-centralised and not really being to our benefit”.

Brexit: Motor industry expert highlights ‘importance’ of securing deal

In relation to the 2016 EU Referendum, in which 52 percent of the nation voted to leave the bloc, he felt there were similar complaints.

Prof Pabst believed Brexiteers were concerned about the EU “being undemocratic, potentially authoritarian and sort of riding roughshod over what people really need and want”.

He argued that Henry’s actions in the 16th century laid “deep roots” within the nation that Britain was better on its own.

Prof Pabst felt that the Reformation “reinforced” that idea and cast doubt on “Britain as part of a wider European continent”.

He added: “I think that’s where EU scepticism has its deep roots in the Reformation.”

Worsley appeared surprised by the claims and remarked that “it all happened in the 1530s”.

She added: “That’s when a lot of these seeds were planted that are still shooting up to the sky today.”

Prof Pabst replied: “If you’re looking for the origins of Brexit, look no further than Henry VIII.”

A short extract of the BBC show, which was posted on Facebook in February last year, drew a positive response from viewers.

One commenter wrote that they “quite enjoyed it”, while others gushed praise for Worsley, including one that read: “Love Lucy.”

After two decades, Mike Henry is stepping down as the voice of Family Guy‘s Cleveland Brown, the actor announced on Twitter.

“It’s been an honor to play Cleveland on Family Guy for 20 years,” Henry tweeted on Friday. “I love this character, but persons of color should play characters of color. Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role.”

Henry, who is not Black, has voiced Cleveland, who is Black, since the character was introduced in Family Guy‘s 1999 series premiere. He also headlined The Cleveland Show for four seasons (2009–2013) on Fox.

Cleveland now joins a growing list of high-profile animated characters that have been recast this week. Jenny Slate announced on Wednesday that she will no longer voice biracial tween Missy on Netflix’s Big Mouth, while Kristen Bell is also being recast as the voice of a young biracial character on Apple TV+’s Central Park.

See Henry’s announcement in full below:

UPDATE: Fox on Friday released a statement announcing that The Simpsons “will no longer have white actors voice non-white characters.”

Buck Henry, a writer who with Mel Brooks created TV’s Get Smart and a frequent host during Saturday Night Live‘s early years, died on Wednesday from a heart attack. He was 89.

Henry’s early writing credits included TV’s The Garry Moore Show and This Was the Week That Was, before he and Brooks created 1965’s Get Smart, a five-season, Emmy-winning spy spoof starring Don Adams in the title role.

For the big screen, he helped pen both The Graduate (for which he earned an Oscar nod), The Owl and the Pussycat and What’s Up, Doc?, before he shepherded the short-lived TV space spoof Quark, starring Richard Benjamin as the captain of an intergalactic garbage scow.

On SNL, he hosted 10 times from 1976-80 and put in at least a half dozen other appearances beyond that, playing such recurring characters as Mr. Dantley (the straight man to John Belushi’s multi-vocational Samurai) and the father of Bill Murray’s Todd in “The Nerds.”

As an actor, Henry’s creduis included The Graduate, his 1970 adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, and Heaven Can Wait (which he co-directed, earning an Oscar nod with star Warren Beatty), as well as TV’s Falcon Crest, Murphy Brown, 30 Rock (as Liz Lemon’s dad), Hot in Cleveland and Franklin and Bash.

Henry Ian Cusick Joins MacGyver Season 4 Cast as Master Manipulator https://briefnews.eu/henry-ian-cusick-joins-macgyver-season-4-cast-as-master-manipulator/ https://briefnews.eu/henry-ian-cusick-joins-macgyver-season-4-cast-as-master-manipulator/#respond Fri, 28 Jun 2019 20:15:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/henry-ian-cusick-joins-macgyver-season-4-cast-as-master-manipulator/

Never one to let grass grow under his feet, Henry Ian Cusick — most recently of Fox’s The Passage — has already lined up his next gig, on MacGyver.

TVLine has learned that Cusick has joined the CBS drama’s Season 4 cast in the series regular role of Russ, a handsome and quick-witted ex-military man.

Described as a master manipulator and salesman, Russ is skilled in propaganda and lie detection, and boasts an extremely high emotional intelligence. He is also very wealthy, and thus is used to both getting his way and enjoying the spoils of war (including expensive suits, fast cars, private jets and a house in Monte Carlo).

Cusick’s addition to the MacGyver cast comes on the heels of Levy Tran being promoted to series regular for Season 4, as Desi.

With Magnum P.I. moving to Fridays this fall, where it will air between Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods, MacGyver is not due to return until midseason.

In addition to his turn on the short-lived The Passage, Cusick’s previous TV credits include The 100, Lost and Scandal.

Comic Relief 2019: 'Love and best wishes' Lenny Henry tributes Louis Tomlinson's sister https://briefnews.eu/comic-relief-2019-love-and-best-wishes-lenny-henry-tributes-louis-tomlinsons-sister/ https://briefnews.eu/comic-relief-2019-love-and-best-wishes-lenny-henry-tributes-louis-tomlinsons-sister/#respond Sat, 16 Mar 2019 13:30:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/comic-relief-2019-love-and-best-wishes-lenny-henry-tributes-louis-tomlinsons-sister/

Comic Relief took over the BBC last night as a whole host of famous faces gathered to help raise money for charity.

One celebrity who was due to perform as the headline act of the evening was Louis Tomlinson.

But due to the sudden death of his sister, Felicite Tomlinson on Wednesday afternoon, the former One Director band member understandably pulled out of the commitment.

Those watching Comic Relief saw host Lenny Henry send out a brief tribute of condolences and well wishes to the songwriter and his family during this difficult time.

He said: “Tonight, we were due to be joined by a special member of the Comic Relief family. Louis Tomlinson wanted to be on this stage to help us, but the sudden and tragic loss of his sister Felicite, obviously means he can’t be here.

“The love and best wishes of all of us at Comic Relief go out to Louis and his family at this terrible time,” he concluded.

Louis who was due to sing his newly released single Two Of Us, which was an emotional ballad to his late mother Johannah Deakin, who sadly passed away in 2016 following a battle with leukaemia, has pulled out of all promotional commitments since the news broke.

It comes after Scotland Yard said police were called by London Ambulance Service at 12:52 on Wednesday 13 March to a residential address following reports of a woman having a cardiac arrest.

“A female believed to be aged 18 as pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course,” the official statement read.

According to The Sun, a person who was with Felicite called 999, whereby two ambulance crews, alongside an experienced paramedic and a single responder medic in a car arrived.

This year’s Red Nose Day raised over a staggering £63 million for charity and the funds will go towards supporting projects both here in the UK and abroad.

The evening saw an array of performances, stories and sketches, but one in particular send the nation into a frenzy.

Those watching at home were given a potential sneak peak in Bodyguard season two, or at least a major spoiler.

In the short clip, PS David Budd (played by Richard Madden) was back protecting a new Prime Minister, Joanna Lumley.

However, it was in a tense moment when the boot was opened a familiar face was seen staring back.

None other than a very-much-alive Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) was seen exclaiming: “Busted!”

But what following sent fans into high suspicion over whether or not the hit BBC drama would be returning, and if so whether the fan-favourite character was indeed dead or alive.

Jumping into the back of the car, David did not seem surprised to see Julia.

And she asked the question everyone wanted to know the answer to: “Do you know if I’m in series two?” and David clarified: “You’re dead.”

But Julia threw a spanner into the works when she said: “Am I?”

Comic Relief is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.

‘Rot in hell!’: Henry Kissinger heckled at New York University speech (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/rot-in-hell-henry-kissinger-heckled-at-new-york-university-speech-video/ https://briefnews.eu/rot-in-hell-henry-kissinger-heckled-at-new-york-university-speech-video/#respond Thu, 18 Oct 2018 18:07:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rot-in-hell-henry-kissinger-heckled-at-new-york-university-speech-video/

New York University students heckled and disrupted an appearance by Henry Kissinger on Tuesday, accusing the former US Secretary of State of complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Kissinger, now 95, was wheeled into NYU’s Stern School of Business on Tuesday evening, where he appeared as part of the school’s speaker series ‘In Conversation with Mervyn King.’

Meanwhile, protesters – some of them members of the International Socialist Organization – gathered outside to denounce Kissinger’s checkered history of bloody foreign policy positions, including his support for Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s, under whom some 80,000 political opponents were jailed and at least 3,000 executed.

Inside, Kissinger was repeatedly interrupted by left-wing protesters, with the first shouting “Henry Kissinger, on behalf of the International Criminal Court, you are a war criminal, you have committed genocide against the people of the world!” before being escorted out by security.

“Henry Kissinger, you have blood on your hands,” another protester piped up. “What about the people of Chile? LIve with the results of what you’ve done.” Like the first interruptor, the second was removed, as the crowd’s boos and jeers became louder. The same thing happened when a third protester spoke up.

“You deserve to answer to war crimes!” another shouted, before telling the venerable statesman “You deserve to go to jail and then rot in hell!” Heckling and chanting continued as Kissinger departed the event later that evening.

Throughout Kissinger’s long diplomatic career, he was lauded for easing US relations with the Soviet Union and China, as well as negotiating the end of the Vietnam War. However, he has also been criticized for orchestrating a US-sponsored coup in Chile, giving the Argentinian junta free rein to commit mass murder and human rights abuses after the 1976 coup, and supporting Pakistan’s genocide against Bangladesh in 1971.

Kissinger also oversaw the escalation of the Vietnam War into Laos and Cambodia, which devolved into a four-year bombing campaign that killed as many as 100,000 civilians. Worse, it cleared the way for Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge to take power in Cambodia’s ensuing power vacuum, and commit genocide of an estimated 1.5 million people.

Several student groups had called on NYU to cancel the invite-only event, writing: “When this man is publicly celebrated as a wise sage of diplomacy, national security, and foreign affairs, his despicable hawkishness is implicitly endorsed.”

The university responded that “The free exchange of diverse ideas and viewpoints is a fundamental value at NYU. As such, an invited speaker should be able to be heard without disruption.”

Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp and John Henry disagree over major decision – offer rejected https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-jurgen-klopp-and-john-henry-disagree-over-major-decision-offer-rejected/ https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-jurgen-klopp-and-john-henry-disagree-over-major-decision-offer-rejected/#respond Fri, 21 Sep 2018 16:44:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-jurgen-klopp-and-john-henry-disagree-over-major-decision-offer-rejected/

This summer saw the release of All or Nothing – a football documentary produced by Amazon Prime that went behind the scenes of Manchester City’s Premier League title-winning season.

Cameras captured detailed insight of Pep Guardiola’s training methods as well as giving fans the chance to see exactly what goes on in the dressing room.

The documentary received mixed reviews with some praising the all-areas access it gave supporters while others believe there were parts of it that seemed staged.

But the overall success of the documentary has now reportedly seen Amazon approach Liverpool about doing the same with them this season with Jurgen Klopp’s side one of the favourite to win the title.

However, according to the Daily Mail, the German was the man chiefly responsible for rejecting the proposal.

The report claims many of Liverpool’s top brass, including American owner John Henry, were keen to let the cameras in and gave the green light for the documentary.

But Klopp put his foot down and voiced his concerns over the series being filmed.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss feels there is nothing to be gained from it and reckons people’s behaviour changes when in front of camera.

Klopp is keen to not upset the harmony of his dressing room.

Liverpool have made a stunning start to the season, winning all five of their Premier League matches before beating Paris Saint-Germain in their first Champions League match on Tuesday night.

After Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over the Ligue 1 champions at Anfield, Klopp insisted there was no mountain his side could not climb.

“Denying them so often, I don’t think a lot of teams have done that,” said Klopp.

“It was necessary we played good, the atmosphere was fantastic, so special to do these things in this stadium.

“One, two, three years ago the people would have thought that’s a mountain we cannot climb.

“It’s still so unbelievably difficult, you can’t plan it. What the boys make of the match plan is extraordinary, it’s outstanding.

“If one of them gave a yard less, game over.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action tomorrow when Southampton make the trip to Anfield (3pm).

Meanwhile, Amazon hope to strike a deal with Bayern Munich for a new football documentary.

Paul Feig Looks Back at ‘Last Christmas’ with Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding https://briefnews.eu/paul-feig-looks-back-at-last-christmas-with-emilia-clarke-and-henry-golding/ https://briefnews.eu/paul-feig-looks-back-at-last-christmas-with-emilia-clarke-and-henry-golding/#respond Wed, 19 Sep 2018 22:27:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paul-feig-looks-back-at-last-christmas-with-emilia-clarke-and-henry-golding/ Last Christmas Movie

Paul Feig is fresh off surprising audiences with a thriller starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, but he’s already planning on getting back into comedy, this time with some romantic holiday flare.

Last Christmas is a new romantic comedy that Paul Feig will direct, and he’ll have Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and Crazy Rich Asians breakout Henry Golding (who also stars in Feig’s A Simple Favor) falling for each other during the most wonderful time of the year.

The Hollywood Reporter has word on Last Christmas, but the plot of the movie beyond it being a holiday romance set at Christmas in London is being kept under wraps. The script is coming from first-time writer Bryony Kimmings, but Emma Thompson is also credited as a writer too, and she knows plenty about holiday romance since she starred in Love Actually and plenty of other love stories.

Feig has proven that he has quite a penchant for comedy with the likes of Bridesmaids and The Heat (not to mention being one of the key figures behind the cult favorite series Freaks and Geeks). Bridesmaids had more of a focus on friendship and pure comedy than love, but this sounds like the romantic angle will be a little more prominent, further broadening Feig’s horizons as a filmmaker.

Henry Golding is riding quite a wave of buzz after Crazy Rich Asians, and this high profile romance sounds like the perfect follow-up to the box office smash hit. His star is only going to keep rising in the wake of that film’s success. Meanwhile, Emilia Clarke will be entering new territory since she hasn’t done much in the vein of comedy. She saw romance in Me Before You, but otherwise she’s mostly done action and fantasy. This will be a whole other animal, and it’ll be interesting to see if she has the chops to pull it off.

As of now, there’s no word on when Last Christmas will arrive, but it’s likely to arrive for the holiday season in 2019. Either way, you can be sure some hip young group will probably deliver a new version of the classic Wham! holiday song from which the film’s title is inspired. Hopefully it’s not Imagine Dragons.
