]]>One parent has a certain set of rules, and the other does it completely differently. It can be a real challenge to navigate this part of the divorce process.
Yet over the years, I have seen couples successfully raise their children together after a divorce. It takes a little attention and focus, but there are number of key strategies that these divorced couples employ to make coparenting much easier.
When couples who are able to communicate coparenting items easily and without much emotion, they get a lot of the work of parenting done quickly. Yet when their discussions about parenting items are filled with emotion, then it muddies the waters.
If you find yourself fighting with your ex about all sorts of coparenting issues, you might want to set up a method of communication which reduces the emotion.
Perhaps a dedicated email thread that only has parenting items might keep the channels of communication more clean.
Many families we see here at our practice in Chicago have different rules at different houses for their children. This can certainly work, but the rules need to be clearly defined by the parents.
Where children struggle is when they are unclear about what the rules of each house are, and then try to manipulate the rules to get their way.
Clear communication of what the expectations are at each house can go a long way towards creating balance and stability.
It is important to be sure that any lingering items from your marriage stay as much in the past as possible.
Of course there will by dynamics from the marital relationship that persist in the coparenting relationship, but couples benefit by bringing their relationship out of the past and trying to create new ways of interacting around parenting items.
One of the more difficult dynamics that we see in Family Therapy is when couples triangulate their children.
Triangulation is when whatever is unresolved between the parents gets transmitted through their interactions with the children.
In other words, the parents hostility and tension gets absorbed by the children and the children start acting it out. It can be very confusing when this happens, and Family Therapy can significantly help when this dynamic occurs.
One thing that troubles a lot of people after a break up or divorce is that they continually hold on to old grudges or complaints.
In order to coparent more effectively, it can be helpful to bless and release your ex. This mean wishing them well and letting go of old hurts.
Can you hope for our ex that they have all good things and find the life and love that they are looking for? This sort of neutrality can go a long way with coparenting from a more balanced place.
Many experts will tell parents to try to stay more calm than their child. If you are anxious, stressed and angry, then your child may become those things too.
Coparenting with an ex adds another layer of difficulty and potentially upsetting emotions. It is important to practice being mindful of your anxiety, stress and anger levels when parenting, and also when interacting with your coparent.
Finding ways to stay relaxed and put things in perspective can help.
Having a good team of trusted people in your corner can help to make sure you don’t feel alone in the process of coparenting. Talking with other parents who are divorced or separated might help you feel less alone in the process.
Additionally, having a trusted counselor or therapist in your corner who can help you look at your blind spots, can make a big difference.
Staying in the moment when parenting can be a useful thing whether you are coparenting, doing it alone, or alongside your partner.
Our minds can race all over the place when we are managing a lot of things in our family life. Yet taking time to stay in the moment and be present with your child will help calm and stabilize the situation.
If you are worried about future events, or stressed about what happened before, it takes you out of the present, which can be full of opportunities for meaningful experiences with your child.
A lot of couples will get in trouble by blaming their ex in front of their child. It can be difficult for them not to criticize their ex, or say something disparaging. Yet this can have a negative impact on the child.
Instead of pointing the finger, it helps to practice “I” statements. Talk about your frustration and how you get overwhelmed by difficult situations rather than commenting on how your ex made mistakes or is selfish.
Talking about your own experience helps you own your own power in the situation.
If coparents are constantly arguing about their schedules, money, or what the rules are, then it can cause a very hostile and chaotic environment for the children.
Yet couples who learn to work together and compromise on the endless, daily family items that need to be negotiated, end up creating a more stable and calm environment for their children.
Even if you insist that you should have the children on a particular holiday because your ex had them the previous year, being willing to compromise and make alternate arrangements can pay off in the long run.
Coparents who are generous with one another, even if they are still upset about their breakup, help create an environment of wellbeing in their family.
If your coparent asks for a random extra weekend with the children, and you know that it is your turn that weekend, being generous and giving a little can go a long way towards generating good will.
Withholding and counting each fairness and unfairness creates a less generous and more stingy family environment.
Of course you don’t want to compromise yourself and give over too much, but keeping on the lookout for when you can give just a bit more, can help the wellbeing of everyone involved.
Parents who worry about the potentially negative influence that their ex will have on their children do well by talking more with their kids.
If you are worried about what your ex might say to your child, it helps to have a good, open line of communication with the child such that you can better understand how they see the world.
It helps if they can talk with you about their confusion or any conflicting messages that they hear from their other parent.
Your child is hard wired to want to connect with you. Parents do well to know that the greatest influence that they have on their child is their relationship with them.
Your children are attached to you, and even if they act as if they want nothing to do with you, they are still wired for your approval and care.
Finding ways to leverage the inherent attachment can help create the sort of life that you’d like for your child.
Don’t overly pursue a connection with your child, but instead attract their interest to connect with you. When parents are too eager to chase a child who is distancing, then the child will often distance more.
Building on the inherent attachment that your child has with you, try to find ways to create harmonious and connected moments rather than asking them tons of questions and trying desperately to create closeness.
Share more with your child about what you love, and what you are passionate about. Children who hear more about what parents care about tend to follow their own passions.
Think about how many famous athletes or musicians children are also athletes or musicians. Children tend to follow the lead of their role models, and if you share what you love, then might emulate that pursuit themselves.
This can go a long way towards creating a lasting bond that can withstand any tension in a coparenting relationship.
A lot of coparents have hidden regrets or live in the past. They wish their family situation could be different, but don’t know how to make it better.
Embracing change can help us move out of past hurts and regrets and find new ways to create the sort of changes we are looking for.
Perhaps you can find new ways to interact with your ex that might foster new family dynamics.
A lot of divorced or separated couples that I work with tend to become hopeless about anything new happening in the family dynamic. They see patterns of interaction repeat themselves over and over, and they anticipate it will continue this way forever.
Yet if there is one thing we can count on is that things will eventually change. Making room in your mind for new possibilities can alleviate some of the hopelessness that sometimes comes with difficult coparenting situations.
Yes you are divorced, but It is indeed possible to be good coparents. Communication and patience go hand in hand if you want to raise happy and healthy kids as a divorced parent.

Android 9 Pie is committed to harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to perform useful actions (Image: Getty • Google)
Google Pixel and Essential phone owners can download the new update right now and make the most of the new functionality.
Here are the most helpful features present in Android 9 Pie.
Digital wellbeing
Google is placing an emphasis on what it is calling “digital welling” with Android 9 Pie.
This is part of the tech giant’s push to help users “disconnect” from their smartphones with a host of new functions.
Android 9 Pie boasts a “Dashboard” to monitor device usage and a “Do Not Disturb” mode to prevent specific notifications from being pushed through to a user.
But Google is also bringing a new feature that allows work applications to be separated from social ones in an effort to help people switch off after a long day at the office.
While the tech giant is placing a heavy emphasis on these additions, they are currently not available in their fully-fledged forms.
Instead digital wellbeing is available to anyone with a Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL through a new beta app.
Google has promised a full rollout of the feature “later this year”, but the beta option exists for Android lovers eager to try out Android 9 Pie’s headline act.
Slices
In addition to digital wellbeing, a very useful tool duly named “Slices” is making its way to Android 9 Pie later this year.
The new feature allows users to harness functions of a particular app without having to launch it entirely.
This means if a user wants to get an Uber home, they should be able to start typing the word “Uber” into a Google Search and a prompt will appear allowing them to request a cab immediately.
Google is touting this as a way to access vital functions of an app quicker and easier than ever.
Gesture controls
Google is touting gestures as a new and intuitive way to get around its new operating system.
The tech giant insisted such functionality is needed as “phones grow taller and it’s more difficult to get things done on your phone with one hand”.
It continued: “Making your phone smarter and more adaptive is important, but we also want Android to be easier to use and more approachable.
“In Android 9, we’ve introduced a new system navigation featuring a single home button.
“This is especially helpful as phones grow taller and it’s more difficult to get things done on your phone with one hand.
“With a single, clean home button, you can swipe up to see a newly designed Overview, the spot where at a glance you have full-screen previews of your recently used apps.”
The new addition replaces the Android staple of having back, home and multi-view button at the bottom of the screen.
Instead a single home button will exist at the bottom of a phone display that will respond to gestures, allowing for a variety of navigation options.
Adaptive Battery
Android 9 Pie is committed to harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to perform useful actions behind the scenes for users.
This includes a new battery mode dubbed “Adaptive Battery” that Google claims will monitor user behaviour to identify what applications should be a priority for juice.
The Silicon Valley behemouth argues distributing power more efficiently will prove monumental in achieving better battery life.
It stated: “Android 9 aims to make your phone even smarter by learning from you and adapting to your usage patterns.
“That’s why Android 9 comes with features like Adaptive Battery, which learns the apps you use most and prioritises battery for them, and Adaptive Brightness, which learns how you like to set the brightness in different settings, and does it for you.”

Notch support
Since the debut of the iPhone X, many Android manufactures have followed Apple’s example by incorporating a controversial notch into their device’s design.
Android 9 Pie will embrace the compromise and allow screens to look more natural with the cutout present.
Google’s latest operating system supports three types of the most commonly used notch.
A “narrow display cutout”, “tall display cutout” and “wide display cutout” are all accounted for and should allow content to fit into a smaller space without error.

Google appears intent on bringing Android 9 Pie to as many devices as possible.
A blog post by the company detailing the new software hints a plethora of phones could have the latest and greatest by the end of the year.
It said: “Starting today, an over-the-air update to Android 9 will begin rolling out to Pixel phones.
“And devices that participated in the Beta program from Sony Mobile, Xiaomi, HMD Global, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus and Essential, as well as all qualifying Android One devices, will receive this update by the end of this fall.
“We’re also working with a number of other partners to launch or upgrade devices to Android 9 this year.”

While social media continues to be humanity’s greatest and most toxic of dumpster fires, the tech industry did manage to do some good this week. Researchers discovered that molten quarks can produce eight times the energy as the hydrogen bomb, Ford began testing exosuits for its assembly line workers, and Google floated its Project Loon as a way to get Puerto Rico back online. Numbers, because how else will you know how good of a Samaritan you are?

138 MeV: That’s how much energy a pair of quarks would theoretically give off if smashed together hard enough. That’s eight times the amount of energy you get when smashing hydrogen atoms. And, since it should only take 130 MeV to successfully smoosh them, researchers believe they may have discovered the world’s next clean energy source. Assuming, of course, that doing so doesn’t first rip open a breach in the space-time continuum.

10 feet per second: That’s how fast NASA’s Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS) can accelerate a 300 pound load, including astronauts training for off-world expeditions.
100 miles: That’s how far Daimler’s new all-electric school bus can travel before needing a recharge. Eat your heart out Miss Frizzle.

1 million: That’s how many times Ford’s automotive assembly workers have to lift their hands above their heads every year. To combat the recurring stress and shoulder injuries that often come along with such activities, the car company has begun testing out non-powered assistive exosuits to shift the load from man to machine.

100,000: That’s how many Puerto Ricans could have their internet connections restored once Google fills the skies above the island nation with its Project Loon Wi-Fi balloons.

1 hour: That’s how long Las Vegas’ new autonomous shuttle bus managed to be on the road before getting into its first fender bender. Hopefully they’ll work out the bug by the time CES rolls around in January.

50: That’s how many characters Twitter users can now leverage for their cleverest of account names, never mind the fact that you can’t read the entire thing from the timeline.

Millions of programmers rely on Stack Overflow, the question-and-answer site for the tech industry, to do their jobs. So much so, that it’s become something of an industry in-joke.
It doesn’t matter which programming language you’re using, what kind of software you’re trying to make, or where in the world you’re located. If you have a question, one of Stack Overflow’s 50 million monthly visitors likely has an answer. That’s made Stack Overflow the premiere place for programmers to socialize and discuss important issues.
Joel Spolsky, the CEO of Stack Overflow, tells Business Insider that he sees the site as “the Library of Alexandria” — an archive of the web’s collective programming knowledge. But Stack Overflow offers a lot more than programming tips. The nine-year-old company now operates a network of 170 topic-specific Q&A sites, including ones focused on travel, math, and office etiquette.
Next up for Stack Overflow: Moving into the lucrative business software market. Specifically, the company is selling private, internal-only versions of its site straight to big companies, a service it calls Stack Overflow Enterprise. The service has 14 customers so far, including Microsoft.
Recently, the company began selling a similar service for small businesses called Stack Overflow Channels. That service gives smaller teams their own roped-off Q&A sites.
Spoksly says that Stack Overflow Enterprise has been one of the easiest sales pitches of his career. He tells the story of a recent sales call with a major technology company, where he came fully prepared to state his case. Instead, once the company’s representative heard that what he was pitching was just a version of Stack Overflow for the company’s internal use, the rep was on board instantly.
“Oh yeah, we should probably have that,” the buyer told Spolsky.
There are a few factors that make private versions of Stack Overflow that are hosted on customers’ own servers, so desirable, says Spolsky.
Among the biggest: it limits the audience who can see questions and requests for help. Asking a question to the entire public audience of Stack Overflow can be intimidating, Spolsky says. With the private service, developers are just asking for help from their peers, not random internet strangers.
“Some developers are just afraid of asking on Stack Overflow,” he says.
And limiting the audience can also mean that developers can seek and get more specific answers. A Microsoft employee can’t really ask about internal tools and procedures on an open forum. Even if the developer found someone who could help, having the exchange out in public might violate confidentiality policies.
Wikimedia Commons
The private enterprise service can also allow companies to build their own in-house “libraries” of knowledge. New employees can see the sum, collected wisdom of everyone who’s come before.
There are chat services (like Slack, which he calls a “beautiful product”) and internal website tools (like Atlassian Confluence) that also promise permanent archives of knowledge and discussions. But Spolsky draws some distinctions between them and his service.
Chats can be full of “cat GIFs” and cross-talk that make it hard to find answers to particular questions. And most people forget to update internal websites.
By contrast, a question-and-answer site like Stack Overflow is both intuitive and easy to search, he says. And it’s to the point — you ask a direct question on Stack Overflow, you get a direct answer.
“We don’t tolerate chit-chat,” Spolsky says.
Spolsky sees developers’ reliance on Stack Overflow as a good thing. In the past — as Spolsky himself experienced — trying to get started as a programmer took a lot of effort. Finding the right tool for even the simplest of jobs was a matter of scouring books and magazines, writing away for trials on floppy disk, and, once you found a tool to test, hoping against hope that it actually worked.
But in recent years, there’s been an “explosion” of technologies from startups and established players that have improved the situation for developers. Programmers can more easily build into their apps the ability to take payments, thanks to Stripe, or to send texts and make phone calls, thanks to Twilio. They can also tap into AI tools from companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
To Spolsky’s mind, it’s only something like Stack Overflow that’s allowed the current software boom to flourish. With all of these technologies around, the traditional ways of solving software problems just can’t keep up. Stack Overflow presents an ever-evolving, living record of how to solve the most present and pressing problems.
If Stack Overflow is successful, “you don’t need the books anymore,” Spolsky says. “That’s kind of a high bar, but it’s great.”

Now in its early stages, artificial intelligence is on the cusp of going mainstream. There are some cool AI-based gadgets and apps on the market, but the next step in AI’s evolution is the development of gadgets that are useful in day-to-day life. This doesn’t necessarily mean “smart” — just practical.
While AI will no doubt continue to improve as technology progresses, there are a handful of helpful devices and gadgets you can get your hands on now. Here is a quick look at six of the best.
Cocoon Cam takes the concept of a baby monitor and elevates it to the next level. It has a video monitor, which is standard on such devices these days, but it also monitors your baby’s breathing, can update you with instant alerts, and gives you an idea of how the little one is resting via sleep analytics.
The camera connects to an associated smartphone app that allows you to check on your child no matter where you are, whether you’re down the hall or on a work trip on the other side of the planet.
The real innovation here is the device’s ability to monitor your baby’s breathing without any sensors or wearable that could be uncomfortable for sensitive skin. The camera uses computer vision technology to track your child’s chest movements, even if they are wrapped in a blanket.
You know about home robots that can help keep your floors tidy, but Kuri is more like a humanoid version of smart home devices like Amazon’s Alexa. A built-in microphone allows Kuri to listen to your voice and take commands, whether it’s playing your favorite songs or podcasts or reading the kids a story before bed.
The robot connects to your entertainment hub but also maneuvers around your home and learns the floor plan over time, including which room belongs to whom. Kuri can also learn the day-to-day routine of your home and wake you up each morning or greet you when you get home from work in the evening.
In addition, Kuri’s “eyes” are a camera that takes photos or videos, recognizes faces, and serves as an alarm system when you’re not home.
Those who know anyone with Parkinson’s disease know just how exhausting its symptoms can be. Hand tremors can make even basic tasks such as eating or writing nearly impossible.
The GyroGlove aims to change all of that. It’s a fingerless glove that places a gyroscope on the top of your hand, creating a sensation comparable to moving your hand through thick syrup. It allows you to move freely but slowly, eliminating the effects of hand tremors.
The glove has been shown to reduce hand tremors by as much as 90 percent, and a companion app tracks your tremors to help you and your medical team manage them more efficiently.
GyroGlove is nearing the end of its development cycle, although there is not yet an official word on when it will be available commercially.
Children with disabilities face many challenges, and Leka aims to help motivate them to play and learn. The device is an interactive robot that allows kids with special needs to play educational games that can help with motor, cognitive, and emotional skills.
The multi-sensory toy also encourages both social interaction and autonomy. It’s a sphere-shaped device that can talk, and it features different colors of LEDs to help kids understand emotions and comprehend communication. Leka is currently in an alpha phase, and interested parents can sign up to give a prototype a try, though they must pay a fee to do so.
Ever since the days of Knight Rider, the talking car has been a dream for many. That dream is realized with Dashbot, a talking AI dashboard robot that connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth.
You know it’s not safe to pull out your phone while you’re driving, whether it’s to send a text message or even to change the current song. Dashbot is like an in-car personal assistant that can handle all of that for you, using voice commands.
Dashbot supports a wide variety of platforms, including Amazon’s Alexa, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, Google Play Music, and ESPN Radio. One of its key features is an open API, meaning developers can add support for all sorts of services.
One of the device’s coolest features is that it employs a microphone system with built-in noise cancelation, allowing it to hear you over the sounds of music or traffic.
Graava is an action camera similar to GoPro and other entries in that space, with one significant advantage — it edits your videos for you.
The camera utilizes sensors that help it recognize changes in scenery — such as acceleration or moving objects — as well as shifts in audio. The AI then takes the best moments of your footage and pares them down to create a video of your desired length.
If there is a moment you are sure you will want to include in your final video, all you have to do is say the word “Graava.” If you have more than one camera working, the AI will take clips from both and use shots from each interchangeably in the final product.
Even though we’re in the early stages of using AI in daily life, these six products are an excellent way to start. And if their innovation at this stage is any indication, the future of consumer AI tech is bright.
