Horror fans comprise one of the most passionate and dedicated fan subcultures in film, with many beloved classics hailed as untouchable masterpieces. And yet, because capitalism be capitalising, some of the greatest horror films of all time have spiraled into decades-long franchises to varying degrees of success. In the last year alone, new installments in the “Halloween,” “Scream,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and “Predator” series have all been released, with even more legacy additions on their way.

One of those films is David Bruckner’s upcoming “Hellraiser” film for Hulu, the 11th film in the canon and first since the rights to the story reverted back to creator Clive Barker. The latter additions to the “Hellraiser” series are some of the most poorly-received films across all of the major horror franchises, which has put Bruckner in an extremely difficult position. If the new “Hellraiser” is a hit, he’ll be the man who brought the series back to life. If the new “Hellraiser” is another dud, this may be the final pin in the Cenobite’s head.

I was fortunate enough to attend a press conference this week for the new film, and it’s obvious that Bruckner knows exactly what’s at stake with the new film. “It’s my first time ever working with sacred IP and feeling a responsibility to what has come before us,” Brucker said. The director first burst onto the horror scene with segments in the films “The Signal,” “V/H/S,” and “Southbound,” before helming the stellar feature films “The Ritual” and “The Night House.” Bruckner also brought frequent collaborators Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski to write the script for “Hellraiser.”

‘A Responsibility To Just Lose Ourselves’

As someone who works primarily in horror, Bruckner is fully aware that there’s an entire bequest riding on the success of this film. “‘Hellraiser’ is pretty hard,” he said. “I was joking, you know, it could be a person with a mask on and a knife, but it’s not, they’re inter-dimensional BDSM demons coming from a labyrinth, it’s complicated stuff to get right.” 

What has always separated “Hellraiser” from its contemporaries like “Halloween” or even “A Nightmare on Elm Street” has been the complicated lore of the Lament configuration and the Cenobites. This is so much more than just a slasher series, especially when the aesthetics are rooted in the very real, underground BDSM queer scenes that inspired Clive Barker’s novel, “The Hellbound Heart.”

“Actually making one of these films, my admiration goes to all the filmmakers that have come before us on it,” said Bruckner. “So [we were] holding that in as high regard as we can, but also — and this is something that we all talked about as a team, and I think everybody was on board for — it was like we also have a responsibility to just lose ourselves in this and allow it to take us in different directions if we’re so compelled, and to be true to the story that we’re telling.” It’s clear that Bruckner has such sights to show us, and the wait to see how his take on “Hellraiser” turns out will be exquisite agony.

“Hellraiser” will be available to stream on Hulu beginning October 7, 2022.

Director David Bruckner has such sights to show us. The time to taste the pleasures of hell is soon upon us as the cenobites are set to invade your television on October 5 with the upcoming release of the highly anticipated “Hellraiser” reboot. The 1987 film, adapted by Clive Barker from his novella “The Hellbound Heart,” and its subsequent sequels posit the great Doug Bradley as the legendary cenobite Pinhead. But the time has come for new blood to torture those curious about the Lament Configuration.

“Sense8” star Jamie Clayton will be stepping into the role and based on what I’ve seen, it appears that she’s primed to give nightmares to a whole new generation. Akin to most horror icons, if an actor embodies the role for long enough, it can make it difficult for folks to adjust to a new actor filling their shoes. Bradley has already done enough direct-to-video “Hellraiser” flicks, so I say we let him rest.

According to a report from Syfy Wire, when Bradley was at Silver Scream Con, he commented on Clayton’s casting, saying that while he’s not familiar with how she’ll play the part, he is, however, quite a fan of her “Sense8” performance. “Jamie was in that, and I really, really liked her performance in that,” praised Bradley.

In the rare instance of social media being an alright place, the pair have even complimented one another’s work on Twitter. In terms of whether or not Bradley believes Bruckner’s film will be a good one, his barometer is a simple one.

‘If The Story Is Strong, The Movie Will Work’

Bradley asserts that the fact that Clayton is transgender is irrelevant to what he feels will make “Hellraiser” work (via Syfy Wire):

“The thing that will make the movie work or not is none of that. It’s the story. If the story is strong, the movie will work […] That’s why ‘Hellraiser has succeeded; not because the Cenobites are gloriously f***ed up.”

With the first trailer having just arrived, we’ve finally received a better glimpse of Clayton’s Pinhead. It should come as no surprise that the Cenobites, coupled with Bruckner’s vision of hell, look incredible. Clayton looks straight-up terrifying. Although details about what’s going on are still pretty sparse, barring the film’s synopsis:

In the all-new “Hellraiser,” a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.

The film stars Hiam Abbass, Adam Faison, Brandon Flynn, Aoife Hinds, Selina Lo, Drew Starkey, and Goran Visnjic, with Odessa A’zion as the film’s protagonist.

Time will tell if this new vision of pain and pleasure will live up to Barker’s story or the Pinhead legacy, but given Bruckner’s pedigree as a horror filmmaker, along with Clayton’s prowess as an actor, I think it’s safe to say we’re in good hands.

“Hellraiser” will premiere on Hulu on October 7, 2022.

It seems like every horror series dies young or lives long enough to descend into the depths of direct-to-video trash. The Hellraiser movies, which began in 1987, achieved that transition in record time and have been disappointing horror buffs for several decades now. You know a horror franchise is in trouble when it sends its characters to outer space and Hellraiser did just that with its fourth film.

Anyway, the tenth film, Hellraiser: Judgment, arrives next month. As you’d expect, it’s going straight to Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD and the trailer makes it perfectly clear why.

Hellraiser Judgment Trailer

I’m not going to stand here and wail about the mighty having fallen, because Hellraiser was only mighty for about two years. The original film, written and directed by horror novelist and artist Clive Barker, is an icky, gooey, slimy, bloody, gory little nightmare of a movie, a blend of religious horror and deranged fantasy that lingers in the back of the mind like a sick dream, something you’d be ashamed to talk about. That’s been the key to so much of Barker’s horror on the page – he operates from a place that feels genuinely inhuman and Hellraiser is one of the few film adaptations of his work that captures that.

(Bonus thought: the lead Cenobite, the demon who would later be named “Pinhead,” exists as a neutral force, albeit a hellish one, in the first movie. The decision to maneuver him into a starring role as the chief villain in the sequels remains an unfortunate and catastrophic decision that robs him of his casual, by-the-books terror. The first movie is very much about people, good and evil, who meddle in forces they do not understand and come face-to-face with monsters who obey a strict set of guidelines, petty human morals and ethics be damned. That’s so much more interesting than anything the later sequels cooked up.)

The first sequel came one year later in 1988 and while Hellbound: Hellraiser II isn’t nearly as good as the first film, it’s still a twisted and outrageous experience that swings for the fences in every possible way. There’s an ambition to it that’s lacking in part three. And part four. Maybe not the surprisingly solid part five, but certainly part six. And part seven. And part eight. And part nine.

Part ten, Hellraiser: Judgment, seems especially unambitious, looking like a Saw sequel with a supernatural element rather than a proper Hellraiser movie. Then again, “a proper Hellraiser movie” at this point is low-budget junk that vanishes straight to video because only a handful of people care about these movies anymore. So maybe it is a proper Hellraiser movie? Anyway, Judgment can’t possibly be worse than 2011’s Hellraiser: Revelations, a film that was literally produced on a microscopic budget so Dimension Films could hold on to the franchise rights as part of a plan to remake the original. Seven years later, they still haven’t remade the original.

Hellraiser: Judgment is written and directed by Gary J. Tunnicliffe and arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD on February 13, 2018. It looks bad. I know I’ll eventually see it because I’m an unhealthy person. Here’s the official synopsis:

The dreaded Pinhead returns in the next terrifying chapter of the classic Hellraiser series. Three detectives trying to stop a diabolical serial killer are sucked into a maze of otherworldly horror, where hellish denizens including the Auditor, the Assessor, and the Jury await to pass judgment.
