A little divine intervention has come to Thursday’s news cycle, courtesy of the trailer for HBO’s religion-centric comedy The Righteous Gemstones.

Created by and starring Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals), the half-hour satire centers on the Gemstones, a world-famous televangelist family led by patriarch Eli (The Conners‘ John Goodman). McBride, Adam Devine (Workaholics) and Edi Patterson (Vice Principals) respectively co-star as Jesse, Kelvin and Judy, Eli’s three children.

Per the official synopsis, “the clan carries out a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work” — and, at the very least, the first two items on that list are on full display in the trailer above, with a side of sexism and sibling rivalry.

In fact, by the time the teaser ends, you’ll start to understand why one character (played by Dermot Mulroney) calls the Gemstones “an absolute disgrace to all ministries.” (But the titular family is just fine with that.)

The comedy’s ensemble also includes Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) as Jesse’s wife, Amber, who gave up a journalism career to devote her life to her husband and his church; Tony Cavalero (The School of Rock) as ex-Satanist Keefe Chambers, a loyal servant to the Gemstones; and Tim Baltz (Veep) as Judy’s fiancé, B.J., who struggles to fit in with the Gemstone clan.

Over half of Americans, both Democrats and Republicans alike, chose ‘worrisome’ to describe 2017, according to a new survey.

The poll, carried out by Survey Monkey and published Sunday, showed 52 percent of respondents including 64 percent of Democrats and 38 percent of Republicans, found the past year to be “worrisome,” while the second most popular word choice was “chaotic.”

Overall, though, Republican supporters were slightly more upbeat that their Democrat counterparts, who also labeled the year “Hellish” and “Exhausting.” Some 28 percent of Republicans thought the year was “Great,” compared to only 5 percent of Democrats. About 11 percent of GOP backers termed 2017 “Epic” compared to 3 percent of Democrats.

Donald Trump entered the White House in 2017 as president for the Republican Party, although his leadership has been contentious even within his own party. The Commander-in-Chief faced mass protests and legal challenges over his so-called ‘Muslim ban’ and the alleged ‘Russia collusion,’ and also heavy criticized for his policies on climate change and transgender rights, along with his handling of the NFL protests.

Trump also presided over riots and street fighting between far-right (or “alt-right”) and far-left activists, also known as Antifa. This sometimes violent rivalry reached a peak in August when a young woman was killed and dozens more injured when a suspected white supremacist rammed a car through a crowd in Charlottesville.

Outside politics, natural disaster struck when storms and hurricanes ravaged the southern United States and Puerto Rico. The year will also be marked with the deadliest mass shooting in American history, when a lone gunman, Stephen Paddock, armed with a small arsenal of assault rifles, shot dead 58 people and wounded more than 500 others at a music concert in Las Vegas before committing suicide. The massacre reignited the fierce debate about gun laws in the United States which are among the most liberal in the developed world.

US forces in southern Syria came under attack by Islamic State militants around midnight local time on Saturday, joining with local partner forces to repel the assault in an hours-long fight that required multiple airstrikes and left three US-backed Syrian fighters dead.

US special-operations advisers were on the ground near the al-Tanf border crossing when a force of 20 to 30 fighters with the Islamic State, the terrorist group also known as ISIS or ISIL, attacked in what a US Central Command spokesman called a “complex and coordinated” attempt to take the base from the coalition.

“US and coalition forces were on the ground in the area as they normally are, and participated in repulsing the attack,” said Air Force Col. John J. Thomas, a spokesman for Central Command, according to the Associated Press.

“There was close-air support that was provided, there was ground support that was provided, and there was med-evac that was supported by the coalition,” Thomas added. No Americans were killed or wounded.

“Clearly it was planned,” Thomas told reporters at the Pentagon. “The coalition and our partner forces had the resources to repulse that attack. A lot of them wound up being killed and the garrison remains controlled by the people in control before being attacked.”

“Ultimately the attackers were killed, defeated, or chased off,” Thomas said.

US forces at al-Tanf, on Syria’s southern border with Jordan and Iraq, had initially withdrawn to avoid potential retaliatory action after the US strike on an Assad regime airfield in western Syria.

The attack came from ISIS fighters disguised as US-backed rebels, carrying M-16 rifles and using vehicles captured from US-supported rebel groups. They struck first with a car bomb at the base entrance, which allowed some of the attackers to infiltrate the base. Many of the ISIS fighters were wearing suicide vests.

“Around 20 ISIS fighters attacked the base, and suicide bombers blew up the main gate, and clashes took place inside the base,” Tlass al-Salama, the commander of the Osoud al Sharqiya Army, part of the US-backed moderate rebel alliance, told The Wall Street Journal.

Salama’s force sent reinforcements to the base, but they came under attack from other ISIS fighters.

US special-operations forces and their Syrian partners who had moved out of the base quickly returned, and they initially repelled the attack on the ground in a firefight that lasted about three hours.

Coalition pilots also carried out multiple airstrikes amid the fighting, destroying ISIS vehicles and killing many of the terrorist group’s fighters.

“It was a serious fight,” a US military official said Monday. “Whether or not it was a one-off, we will have to see.”

US special-operations forces had been training vetted Syrian opposition troops at al-Tanf for more than a year. The Syrian opposition fighters in question were operating against ISIS in southern Syria and working with Jordan to maintain border security.

The pullback from al-Tanf to safeguard against reprisals was just one step the coalition took in the aftermath of the US strike on Shayrat airfield, which was believed to be the launching point for a chemical weapons attack on a Syrian village last week.

The coalition also reduced the number of air missions it flew, out of concern Syrian or Russian forces would attempt to shoot down US aircraft. The US presence in Syria has increased in recent months, as Marines and other units arrive to aid US-backed fighters.

ISIS may become more active in southern Syria as US-backed forces close in on Raqqa, the terrorist group’s self-proclaimed capital located in northeast Syria. Top ISIS leaders have reportedly fled the city in recent months.

We’ve seen the spy shots of this thing, the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee TrackHawk, before. But only from the outside. The external changes are plenty telling, but there was always the slight chance we were looking only at an extra-hot SRT version, not a full-blown (pun intended) TrackHawk with a Hellcat motor. Until the hood goes up, there’s no telling what we’re really looking at.

Well, seeing is believing. We have been looking at TrackHawks all along. And Mike Manley, Jeep’s CEO, wasn’t selling the world a bill of goods when he said to expect the thing “by the end of 2017”. As you can clearly see in the slightly noisy engine shot, that’s a supercharger parked on top of FCA’s 6.2-liter V8, just like in the Charger and Challenger Hell-twins. Chances are it’ll make the same power as it does in those two – 707 hp, in case you’re just waking up from cryo-stasis and aren’t aware of the most famous power output figure on the planet.

There are some differences between this Grand Cherokee and ones we’ve previously pegged as TrackHawks. The fog lights in the lower grille vents are gone, and the rear fascia gets a bit more aggressive. Perhaps these will be the external details that separate the TrailHawk from the lowly non-supercharged SRT versions. We’ve also been hearing about quad exhaust tips, but haven’t seen them on a prototype yet.

If Jeep wants to get this thing out on the road by the end of the year, we’re likely to see it coming to an auto show soon. Keep your eyes peeled.
