Baby Ruby Review: Motherhood Is Hell [TIFF] https://briefnews.eu/baby-ruby-review-motherhood-is-hell-tiff/ https://briefnews.eu/baby-ruby-review-motherhood-is-hell-tiff/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 07:20:07 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/baby-ruby-review-motherhood-is-hell-tiff/

Pop culture — at least in the Western world — treats pregnancy and early motherhood as a magical time, when back aches and sleepless nights are a mere inconvenience in what is otherwise a fantastic, love-fuelled, once-in-a-lifetime journey. That is bulls***. And with “Baby Ruby,” Bess Wohl is setting the record straight.

Premiering at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, “Baby Ruby” is a tense, visceral psychological thriller that sets out to dismantle everything you think you know about being a mom. Written and directed by Tony-nominated American playwright Bess Wohl, the film centers on the independent, perfectionist, mom-to-be Jo (Noémie Merlant), who branded herself as a chic lifestyle influencer through her successful blog, “Love, Joséphine.” Using the power of the internet — and, let’s face it, her good looks and wealth — Jo has carefully curated an aspirational image for her online followers. She takes it all on herself; taking control of every aspect of her life; she even goes as far as to plan her own baby shower, which she then turns into content for the website. It’s too much. There’s no separation between her life and her work, and it’s a disastrous situation to be in as a new mother. Jo believes she can “do it all.” Every experienced mother in the audience knows she can’t.

In a tight 93 minutes, Wohl both sets up and thoroughly dissembles Jo’s ego, confidence, and seemingly perfect image on screen. We get a female perspective on the psychological and emotional trauma of early motherhood: the loss of one’s sense of self, the strain on one’s mental house, the physical pain, and humiliation. It’s an uncomfortable, yet stylish, depiction of a mental breakdown — think Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” but with a woman on both sides of the lens.

‘It’s Hell’

To say that “Baby Ruby” is intense would be an understatement. Wohl creates such a feeling of unease that the film verges on intolerable. I was at the edge of my seat for most of the run-time — in part because the cinematography was so unnerving, but also because I couldn’t help but be worried about poor baby Ruby and her deteriorating mother, Jo. Postpartum depression is getting more recognition now, but it’s still a largely misunderstood condition — one that often brings with it feelings of deep shame. Society tells us that “good” mothers love their children and tackle the strains and stress of infant care with ease. But that’s just not what the first few months are like for the vast majority of new parents.

As mother-in-law Doris (Jayne Atkinson) confides in Jo: “It’s hell.”

I did not experience postpartum depression, and to be honest, both my kids were relatively easy babies. Still, I can relate to Jo’s experience in “Baby Ruby.” For years, I would hear an infant crying at night — even when my youngest was well into his toddler years. I remember the pain of bathroom trips post-birth, and the embarrassment of walking around in what felt like a  pillow wrapped around my crotch. I breastfed, and there were times when my nipples were so chapped they bled. Nursing when you’re tired, and you’re sore — it feels like life is being sucked out of you. I was a different person walking into the hospital pregnant than I was when I left with my child, and I’ve never felt that experience has been represented honestly in media — until “Baby Ruby.”

Is It Worth It?

A phrase I heard a lot during my kids’ infancies was “it takes a village.” Although it’s never spoken in “Baby Ruby,” that message is the core thesis this film argues for. Increasingly in our social-media-obsessed culture, we’ve become isolated. We craft images of ourselves online that are too good to be true, and we feel insecure about the impossibly perfect people we follow. It’s a vicious cycle that serves to reinforce insecurities and isolation. Jo doesn’t know how to ask for help, or even recognize that she needs it. As a result, she keeps “failing” to meet her own impossible, self-imposed standards — and she doesn’t have the tools to deal with that.

Ever since my screening, I’ve been wrestling with the actual experience of watching “Baby Ruby.” It was not enjoyable; that isn’t to say that it isn’t compelling, or that I didn’t get anything from it. Quite the contrary — it’s been on my mind since I walked out of that studio. The film has a lot to say, and much of it is poignant and, dare I say, necessary.

There’s the question, “was it worth it?” For me, being a parent was worth the sacrifice, and I think ultimately that’s the message of “Baby Ruby.” In terms of watching the film … I honestly can’t say. I do believe it is a well-crafted film, and I have a deep respect for what Wohl accomplishes. Kit Harington is endlessly charming as Jo’s husband Spencer, and Atkinson nails the quintessential well-meaning but also infuriating mother-in-law. The film’s pacing is relentless though, and for me, some of the clearly symbolic imagery got in the way of telling a cohesive story. Maybe the biggest issue, for me, is that the content hit too close to home.

I’ll have to watch again to find out.

Trump says the GOP is ‘furious’ with Mitch McConnell: ‘We have to put up with him for a period of time, but eventually he’ll be gone’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-the-gop-is-furious-with-mitch-mcconnell-we-have-to-put-up-with-him-for-a-period-of-time-but-eventually-hell-be-gone/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-the-gop-is-furious-with-mitch-mcconnell-we-have-to-put-up-with-him-for-a-period-of-time-but-eventually-hell-be-gone/#respond Fri, 02 Sep 2022 07:38:49 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-the-gop-is-furious-with-mitch-mcconnell-we-have-to-put-up-with-him-for-a-period-of-time-but-eventually-hell-be-gone/ Former President Donald Trump, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell over the past 18 months.

  • Trump has escalated his feud with Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell.
  • He claimed that the Republican Party was "furious" with McConnell.
  • Trump said that the party would have to "do something" about McConnell, whom he labeled "bad news."

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out once again at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

During an appearance on the conservative medial channel Real America's Voice, Trump was asked to respond to McConnell's hint in August that the GOP might not win the Senate because of the quality of Trump-backed candidates.

"He's such a negative for the party," Trump said, adding that he was "embarrassed" by McConnell.

"I would've run somebody against him in the primary. But, who would've known that he turned out so bad? And I was never a big fan, but he turned out bad," the former president said.

Trump also alluded again to the idea that he wanted to replace McConnell as Senate GOP leader.

"He's not good, and we're gonna go through him, and then we'll have to do something, later on, we'll have to do something with him," Trump said.

"The party is furious at him. We have to put up with him for a period of time, but eventually, he'll be gone," Trump added. "He's bad news."

A representative at Trump's post-presidential press office and representatives for McConnell did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

Trump's comments came the same day that Sen. Rick Scott of Florida revived his ongoing rivalry with McConnell for criticizing the GOP's "candidate quality."

Scott said he had a "strategic disagreement" with McConnell during an interview with Politico that was published on Thursday. Scott also wrote in an op-ed in the Washington Examiner that the idea of "trash-talking" GOP candidates was "an amazing act of cowardice" and "treasonous to the conservative cause."

Trump, too, has rebuked McConnell for questioning the quality of the GOP candidates he's backed, calling him a "pawn for the Democrats" and calling for him to be replaced as GOP leader.

The origins of the McConnell-Trump feud date back to February 2021, when McConnell rebuked Trump for his "disgraceful dereliction of duty" during the Capitol riot. Since then, Trump repeatedly attacked McConnell.

In November, Trump slammed McConnell and other Republicans who backed President Joe Biden's infrastructure bill, calling them "RINOs," an acronym for Republicans In Name Only. Trump has also called McConnell an "Old Crow" on several occasions and accused the latter of "jeopardizing" other Republican senators' reelection chances.

In February, McConnell shrugged off rumors that Trump might succeed in an attempt to oust him as majority leader if the GOP were to take the Senate in the November midterms. The comments came after Trump called McConnell a "loser" for defending GOP Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota, who had contradicted Trump's voter fraud claims.

Last month, Trump also called McConnell's wife, former Transport Secretary Elaine Chao, "crazy" and "coco" in several Truth Social posts. McConnell, however, did not react to Trump's insult, saying he had "no" response to the criticism.

Jim replied: “We do all local produce, we’re supported by a lot of great producers.

“We go to a lot of great restaurants and we sell a lot of their produce in the shop as well.”

“How fantastic is that,” James concluded. “Best of luck with everything, hope to see you again soon.”

Lucifer season 6: Lucifer’s return to hell ‘sealed’ as fans spot clue in Tom Ellis snap https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-6-lucifers-return-to-hell-sealed-as-fans-spot-clue-in-tom-ellis-snap/ https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-6-lucifers-return-to-hell-sealed-as-fans-spot-clue-in-tom-ellis-snap/#respond Fri, 26 Mar 2021 03:15:40 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-6-lucifers-return-to-hell-sealed-as-fans-spot-clue-in-tom-ellis-snap/

With the arrival of his father, God (Dennis Haysbert) in season five’s gripping midseason finale, fans are speculating Lucifer’s stint as the ruler of hell might be over.

On the other hand, his redemption may not be so close at hand, and Lucifer may once again find himself presiding over his legion of demons and tortured souls by the end of the next instalment.

Meanwhile, showrunner Ildy Modrovich’s new snap of Tom Ellis on the set of season six has once again sparked some outlandish theories for the events of season six.

Her new post featured Ellis discussing a scene with one of the directors for the series.

Riverdale season 5: Fans blindsided by Jughead’s alien abduction twist: ‘Dumb as hell’ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-5-fans-blindsided-by-jugheads-alien-abduction-twist-dumb-as-hell/ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-5-fans-blindsided-by-jugheads-alien-abduction-twist-dumb-as-hell/#respond Thu, 11 Mar 2021 06:56:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-5-fans-blindsided-by-jugheads-alien-abduction-twist-dumb-as-hell/

The CW’s bonkers young adult drama keeps piling on the twists, and this week’s episode of Riverdale was no different. Fans were genuinely stumped by the latest chapter, ‘Fire in the Sky’, which seemed to confirm extraterrestrial invaders had infiltrated the town.

The small town of Riverdale had yet another brush with the supernatural in the latest episode of the show’s unpredictable fifth season.

After jumping ahead by seven years, Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and his friends return home in their mid-20s in hopes of restoring their old high school to its former glory.

Unfortunately, the situation in the town has only gotten worse over the years, and the gang find themselves once again pulled into various conspiracies.

This week’s instalment, ‘Fire in the Sky’, saw Archie volunteer at the local fire department.

Meanwhile, Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) tries to coax Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) out of isolation, and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) uncovers yet another serial killer.

Where the show may start to lose viewers is when struggling author Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) stumbles upon a mystery of his own.

Fans were already gripped before the series took a two week break as the previous episode warned of a mysterious Mothman who could be stalking the town.

Now the series appears to have fully embraced the supernatural as Jughead could become the victim of an alien abduction.

“This Mothman thing is getting very Scooby Doo,” said one viewer.

“I feel like they’re gonna unmask an alien in the finale and be like “It was Old Man Mr. Jenkins this entire time!” and explain how everything was done using magnets and holograms.”

The series has certainly come close to introducing other-worldly concepts when the Gargoyle King was still in town, as well as the gang’s ordeal with Edgar Neverever (Chad Michael Murray) and the Farm.

While this fan rightly pointed out that Riverdale’s latest spooky conspiracy will probably be revealed as yet another elaborate hoax, others had their doubts.

Another viewer said: “On the one hand I don’t want this show to add aliens.

“But on the other hand any non-alien explanation is probably gonna be dumb as all hell so I guess I’m doomed to have this show melt my brain either way.”

The series remains as addictive as ever, but long-suffering fans may have to suspend their disbelief to dizzying degrees in the coming episodes once Jughead starts to investigate further.

Riverdale season 5 continues Wednesday, March 17 on the CW and the following Thursday on Netflix.

Flash Boss Teases Diggle’s Next Visit (And the ‘Problem’ He’ll Be Juggling) https://briefnews.eu/flash-boss-teases-diggles-next-visit-and-the-problem-hell-be-juggling/ https://briefnews.eu/flash-boss-teases-diggles-next-visit-and-the-problem-hell-be-juggling/#respond Wed, 24 Feb 2021 02:07:55 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/flash-boss-teases-diggles-next-visit-and-the-problem-hell-be-juggling/

If John Diggle looks a bit green around the gills when he resurfaces on The Flash, it’s because the Arrow hero will be dealing with a lot.

As Arrow‘s series finale drew to a close, Diggle (played by David Ramsey) was packing up to relocate his family to Metropolis when a meteor crashed nearby, slamming him against a moving van. After shaking off the blow, Dig combed through the debris to discover a box, which, upon being opened, emitted a bright green light — seemingly nodding at the character’s long-speculated Green Lantern destiny.

As previously reported, Ramsey is now due to reprise his role as Diggle in a total of five episodes across The Flash (which opens Season 7 on March 2), Supergirl (final season premiere date TBA), Superman & Lois (which debuts tonight, Feb. 23) and Batwoman, as well as play “a mystery role” during Legends of Tomorrow‘s sixth season (premiere date TBA).

During TVLine’s in-depth Season 7 preview Q&A (publishing later this week), we asked showrunner Eric Wallace what The Flash‘s specific plans for Dig are. “Boy, that’s a spoiler!” he replied with a hearty laugh, before offering a tease for what’s to come.

“When we last saw Diggle, he had a situation at the end of Arrow that he needed to deal with,” Wallace reminded, “so he arrives to help Team Flash in the back half of the season carrying the weight of that ‘problem.’ And the question is: How can he help Team Flash when he’s got something even bigger on his mind? And that’s what the story is.”

Speaking to Diggle’s long-teased destiny as a Green Lantern, Arrowverse EP Marc Guggenheim told TVLine over a year ago, “Greg [Berlanti], David and I have had a lot of conversations about David’s future in the Arrowverse going forward, both in front [of] and behind the camera, and there are a lot of ideas that we’re banding about that are very exciting to us…. We’ve just got some cool notions for next season.”

‘It’s better without you’ Naga Munchetty swipes at Matt Tebbutt as he jokes he’ll leave https://briefnews.eu/its-better-without-you-naga-munchetty-swipes-at-matt-tebbutt-as-he-jokes-hell-leave/ https://briefnews.eu/its-better-without-you-naga-munchetty-swipes-at-matt-tebbutt-as-he-jokes-hell-leave/#respond Sat, 20 Feb 2021 13:17:33 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/its-better-without-you-naga-munchetty-swipes-at-matt-tebbutt-as-he-jokes-hell-leave/

BBC Breakfast hosts Jon Kay and Rachel Burden checked in with Matt Tebbutt during the show to find out what would be coming up on Saturday Kitchen. He was joined by Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt while Yotam Ottolenghi was in the kitchen for the latest instalment. Unfortunately Matt couldn’t get a word in edgeways, as Naga and Charlie took over presenting joking they were on BBC Breakfast. At one point, Matt even joked he should just leave as he wasn’t needed in the studio.

“Our special guests today, Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt, good morning guys,” Matt said turning to the presenters. “Is it nice to be here rather than on the red sofa?”

Charlie replied: “I’m finding it all a bit weird frankly. I feel like doing, which is my camera, down here? Good morning and welcome to BBC Breakfast.”

Joining in on the joke, Naga added: “The time now is 9.31,” as Charlie pointed at Matt adding: “I don’t know what he’s doing here. I’m really confused.”

Turning to Naga, Matt asked: “And you’re just here for a laugh aren’t you? And the food and drinks.”

“Always,” the BBC journalist replied. “Yeah why not? It’s nice to get out and have a change of scenery.”

Matt continued: “I feel strangely more comfortable knowing that you’re there rather than down that lens to be honest. It’s always disconcerting.”

“It’s the false sense of security you’ve fallen into,” Naga replied. “I’m loving that.”

Matt then turned his attention to the presenter’s food heaven and food hell noting both had similar food hells.

“The best thing is, we have Yotam Ottolenghi here as well,” she explained.

Matt laughed: “I’ll let you introduce him,” before throwing his hands in the air and pretending to leave the studio.

Naga wasn’t fazed as she swiped: “Matt, honestly, it’s better without you anyway.

“So, we’ve got Yotam here and you’re going to dish up some amazing things for us.”

Lucifer season 5B theories: Lucifer to take Chloe to hell as fans tip celestial twist https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-5b-theories-lucifer-to-take-chloe-to-hell-as-fans-tip-celestial-twist/ https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-5b-theories-lucifer-to-take-chloe-to-hell-as-fans-tip-celestial-twist/#respond Tue, 12 Jan 2021 03:20:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-5b-theories-lucifer-to-take-chloe-to-hell-as-fans-tip-celestial-twist/

Fans are still scrutinising the latest chapters of Lucifer for new clues, and have landed on a convincing theory about the devil’s love interest, Chloe Decker (played by Lauren German).

Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) finally plucked up the courage to make things official with his detective partner in the latest season after taking an impromptu break from his self-exile in hell.

Throughout the series, Chloe has unearthed more secrets about her strange past, including the fact that her birth had been blessed by Lucifer’s brother, Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside).

She is now unsure whether she was intended as a gift for Lucifer from his father or whether she has another purpose entirely.

With the long awaited arrival of God (Dennis Haysbert) in the midseason finale, it’s hoped fans will finally get some answers in the last eight episodes of season five.

Until then, discussions have continued online, and one perceptive fan may have hit upon the most persuasive theory to explain Chloe Decker’s endgame so far.

Replying to a recent Reddit thread, user Bingeallgood wrote: “Chloe is more than human, she has a celestial tie.

“After 5a, I believe that tie is either God, but now leaning way more towards Lucifer himself (makes sense why she is immune to his mojo).”

Even after what is assumed to be a few short weeks together, Lucifer and Chloe already seem like the perfect couple, despite Lucifer’s reluctance to say ‘I love you’ in the latest episode.

Whether God is behind this grand, romantic scheme is yet to be revealed, but Chloe’s apparent connection to the celestial realm may have subtly set up the character’s conclusion once the series gets to the finale of season six.

The viewer explained: “I think she will be helping people (guilt ridden, not the evil) get out of their hell loops and move on.

“I think that’s why God blessed her and put her in Lucifer’s path. Also, that’s why every case has either Lucifer or Chloe learn a lesson. So they learn/grow and build their skills at the same time.”

In the show’s cruel version of hell, the souls of the departed are tortured by visions of their worst moments on Earth and kept there by their own guilt and cowardice.

Fans finally got a glimpse of one of Lucifer’s hell loops at the beginning of season five, when he tortured his long-suffering acquaintance Lee Garner (Jeremiah Birkett) for information.

With Lucifer’s father entering the picture for season five, he could finally put a stop to the underworld’s archaic practices and assign Chloe as a helpful guide for trapped souls.

Lucifer Season 5, Part 1 is available to stream on Netflix.

Naga Munchetty: BBC Breakfast host opens up on ‘coming out of a year of hell’ https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchetty-bbc-breakfast-host-opens-up-on-coming-out-of-a-year-of-hell/ https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchetty-bbc-breakfast-host-opens-up-on-coming-out-of-a-year-of-hell/#respond Mon, 28 Dec 2020 07:00:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchetty-bbc-breakfast-host-opens-up-on-coming-out-of-a-year-of-hell/

Naga, 45, has been seen hosting BBC Breakfast alongside co-star Charlie Stayt, 58, for some time but their partnership during the course of the coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated to be stronger than ever. The pair have grilled Government ministers over answers to their response to the crisis as well as providing moments of light-hearted entertainment to distract BBC viewers from the hard-hitting news. However, the broadcaster has stated it has been “a year of hell” trying to front the show as well as deal with her own worries about the outside world.

The journalist explained of reporting on more emotive stories coming from the pandemic: “Those remind you of how privileged you are to be able to talk to people.

“I’ve had a couple of moments where I’ve had to compose myself after a particular interview or take a deep breath.”

Addressing her reaction to the global health crisis, the broadcaster added: “First and foremost, I’m so grateful I have a job.”

Going on to explain her own personal connection to those who have lost their jobs, the presenter said she understood the position they were in.

Naga also stipulated of those people she knew, they were struggling with finances as well as the emotional hardship that brings.

With the pandemic not over yet and the Brexit deal completed, the journalist stated she wants to continue bringing some light-relief into viewer’s homes.

“We’re coming out of a year of hell. I want the programme to offer a message of hope, positivity and joy,” Naga explained to Radio Times.

The broadcaster has been one of the many faces of the programme for over a decade now and it seems she isn’t going anywhere just yet.

Fans will be encouraged to hear the presenter will continue to hold her Thursday to Saturday role alongside Charlie for the foreseeable.

Instead, she has been making the most of her time off with husband and broadcast consultant James Haggar at their home in Hertfordshire.

Naga has also been spending some time with her beloved cats and has been sharing pictures of them on her Instagram page.

In view of her 37,800 followers on Christmas Day, the broadcaster was seen stroking one of her pets after enjoying a season feast.

Captioning the 10-second clip, the journalist wrote in a message to fans: “Post food cuddle. Sending Love X.”
