The 49-year-old star played Hela in Thor Ragnarok, the goddess of death and sister of Hemsworth’s Asgardian prince.

However as usual for villains, she was defeated at the film’s end when Asgard was destroyed.

Yet as comic book characters are prone to do, could she be making a big comeback?

Blanchett is currently promoting her new film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls and she recently asked about returning as Hela.

Speaking with FANDOM, her co-star Jack Black said: “[We] never actually saw her die. You just saw her go down in a giant ball of flame.”

Blanchett responded that Hela “looks pretty dead” but is open to a resurrection of sorts.

She added: “There’s always a way back, but I’m sure there’s always a way forward.

“Who know? Sure. I never say no to anything.”

Asked if she would like to team up with Thanos, who falls in love with the goddess of Death in the comics, Blanchett certainly didn’t say no.

She said: “That would be good.”

However she teased it would “not [be] nice” for the Avengers.

Of course one possibility is that Blanchett is playing it coy and Hela will return in Avengers 4.

After all it’s unlikely that Thanos will appear in future MCU movies, as Josh Brolin has teased Avengers 4 is his last one in the franchise.

There’s also the fact there’s been rumours of dead characters like Crossbones, Peggy Carter and reappearing in a film that’s rumoured to be heavy on time travel.

It would certainly be a great way to celebrate 10 years of the MCU with trips back to past movies.

Avengers 4 is released in UK cinemas on April 26, 2019.

Hopefully you’ve watched Thor: Ragnarok from the comfort of your home a few times now. The third installment of the Marvel Studios franchise defies the odds by actually being the best chapter of the god of thunder’s trilogy, and it gets better and better each time you watch it.

There are plenty of special features taking you behind the scenes of the home video release, but a new Thor Ragnarok visual effects breakdown shows you some of the impressive digital work that you might not have even realized was done on the movie in post-production. In this case, the glimpse behind the scenes focuses on the scene where Cate Blanchett appears as Hela the goddess of death and destroys Thor’s trusty hammer Mjolnir.

This sequence is the scene as it was completed in reshoots as opposed to the original sequence that was teased in trailers that had this face off between Thor and Hela taking place in a city alley on Earth. Director Taika Waititi explained why the change was made from the original version of that sequence shortly after the movie was released.

It’s fascinating to see that even though the location they shot on had plenty of natural environment to use for the sequence, plenty of visual effects created by Image Engine were required to make it feel a little more mystical and unique. Plus, plenty of digital work needed to be done to create the sight of lightning and power that Hela uses to destroy Mjolnir. I’ll never get tired of seeing these scenes without visual effects, and it makes me wish we could see a cut of the movie without any visual effects.

Earlier this week, we brought you another interview from our visit to the Australian set of Thor: Ragnarok, this time with none other than Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, playing Hela, the goddess of death. The actress is the first female villain to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and she’s clearly going to create a lot of problems for the god of thunder and his homeworld of Asgard.

So far, the trailers for Thor: Ragnarok have shown us the impressive powers Hela as she destroys Thor’s trusty hammer Mjolnir (though the setting of that scene has apparently been changed), and now a new featurette shows more of the villain wreaking havoc on Asgard, bringing Karl Urban into the fray as Skurge, and facing off with Thor himself.

The featurette in question reveals more footage of the reshot sequence where Hela destroys Mjolnir. As we previously recounted, the scene in question has been moved to an area with rolling green hills instead of a dark city alley. The new footage has Hela telling Thor (Chris Hemsworth), now accompanied by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in this scene, to kneel to their new queen. Obviously, they’re going to refuse, and that’s probably not going to sit well with Hela.

Other footage on display seems to show Hela destroying some kind of mural featuring Asgard, Odin and more. This will likely come after Hela has already blasted Thor and Loki to Sakaar during a confrontation while in the middle of the Bifrost Bridge teleportation, allowing her to create chaos in Asgard with little consequences. As for how Hela returns to power after being banished from Asgard to begin with remains to be seen, but some have theorized that it involves another Infinity Stone.

Hela is a huge fixture of the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, which hits cinemas next month.

Brad Winderbaum, one of the film’s producers, kept his cards close to his chest.

“Obviously we always think about the movies as standalones, even if they do set up a movie down the road or pay off something from a previous film,” he told ComicBook.com. 

“What we hope, if we do our jobs right, is that Hela is one of the best villains we’ve had – maybe the best, hopefully.”

Spilling on Blanchett’s performance, he added: “Cate has been delivering an incredible performance. She’s really scary and really charming. 

“She’s very easy to watch, very fun to be around. But very murderous and horrible at the same time. 

“You’re right that those are things that Thanos values. But when and how she plays into the future of the universe is uncertain now.”

Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, is known to be the chief antagonist-at-large in Infinity War.

The all-star film already has an almighty cast, with several faces from the MCU due to appear.

With a sequel being filmed back-to-back, it’s also thought that there will be more than one fatality among the lead cast.

Thor: Ragnarok is out on October 27. Avengers: Infinity War follows on April 27 2018 in the UK (May 4 in the US).
