Warning: This post contains a major spoiler from the premiere of Power Book II: Ghost.

Tasha’s Hail Mary attempt to avoid a prison sentence in Sunday’s premiere of the Power spinoff is likely to have one hell of a consequence, in the form of the return of certain volatile criminal whose name rhymes with “Shmommy Shmegan.”

While on trial for murder, Tasha claimed her innocence, then was pressed to give the name of the gunman who shot and killed her husband, James “Ghost” St. Patrick. Unwilling to implicate the actual shooter — her teenage son, Tariq — Tasha told the court that her husband’s former business partner, Tommy Egan, was the person who’d done the deed. (Click here to read a full recap of the premiere.)

In a recent interview, Power Book II: Ghost boss Courtney Kemp told TVLine that the move “is not premeditated. She knows that Tariq wants her to say his own name… and she can’t. She can’t bring herself to do it, so she says it’s Tommy.”

Kemp pointed out that Tasha and Tariq had planned to pin the blame on Ghost’s dead nemesis, Dre, but that Saxe had ruled him out as a suspect earlier in the episode. “Dre has been taken away from her as a scapegoat. Who does she have left?,” the executive producer said. “So she says ‘Tommy.’”

Tommy, played by Joseph Sikora in the original series, was last seen leaving New York for California. A spinoff starring Sikora, titled Power Book IV: Force, will follow the character as he puts the Big Apple behind him and starts a new life.

At this point, it’s important for you to know that earlier in TVLine’s conversation with Kemp, she told TVLine that, “By the end of the season, you are going to see a very familiar face.” And when the subject of Tasha’s big announcement came up, Kemp grinned.

“Remember how I said a familiar face would show up at some point?” she said airily. “I don’t know: If somebody said in court that I did something that I didn’t do, I might feel compelled to show up, maybe, and talk to them about it?”

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

  • Oracle founder Larry Ellison said “it’s kind of embarrassing” for Amazon that it uses Oracle’s databases to power its own business — especially considering Amazon offers its own databases that compete with Oracle’s.
  • Ellison was responding to a report from last week that Amazon intends to get off of Oracle’s products completely by 2020.
  • While Amazon is a customer of Oracle’s, they are also bitter competitors, thanks to the success of Amazon Web Services.

Oracle founder and chief technology officer Larry Ellison went on stage Tuesday to announce a new database feature. But it wasn’t long before Ellison did what he seems to love doing at big events: roasting Amazon.

Last week, CNBC reported that Amazon plans to end its internal reliance on Oracle technology, which underlies some parts of its business. It’s notable, because Amazon’s market-leading Amazon Web Services cloud has been attacking Oracle’s core database business for the last few years.

Govt. shutdown: US military ops continue while civilian services heavily affected https://briefnews.eu/govt-shutdown-us-military-ops-continue-while-civilian-services-heavily-affected/ https://briefnews.eu/govt-shutdown-us-military-ops-continue-while-civilian-services-heavily-affected/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 12:27:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/govt-shutdown-us-military-ops-continue-while-civilian-services-heavily-affected/

Despite the US government shutdown, military operations will continue as normal while non-essential civilian services will be heavily curtailed, SpaceX launches will be postponed and the tourism industry greatly impacted.

The US government shut down Saturday after failing to reach an agreement on an approved budget for federal agencies. Government funding expired midnight Friday, sparking the start of the first government shutdown since 2013.

A government shutdown results in large numbers of federal employees being sent home as agencies operate on a minimal basis with non-essential staff placed on furlough. Here RT.com looks at some of the areas affected.

SpaceX grounded

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has had to postpone a planned test of its Falcon Heavy Rocket as a result of the shutdown.

“Due to the shutdown removing key members of the civilian workforce, the 45th Space Wing will not be able to support commercial static fires taking place on KSC [Kennedy Space Center],” the 45th Space Wing Air Force unit said Sunday, WTSP reports. “Without our civilian workforce, the 45th SW is unable to support launch operations as well.”

Operations are also on hold at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

NASA

NASA has two spacewalks planned in the next few weeks, which will both be affected by the shutdown should it continue. The space agency estimated almost 17,500 employees, or 85 percent of its workforce, would be furloughed during a shutdown, according to a plan put together last November.

“When it comes to station operations, we have a plan,” Kenny Todd, NASA’s ISS mission operations integration manager, said during a press briefing on Thursday. “Mission-essential, critical personnel will be on site, will be working, will be continuing the mission. So we don’t see that as any kind of impact going forward when it comes to our daily operations.”

Astronauts on board the International Space Station, as well as the support staff operating on the ground, will continue operations.

National Parks and Statue of Liberty closed

National Parks’ employees are largely placed on furlough during a shutdown. During the last one in 2013, their closure sparked anger among citizens. President Trump is reportedly taking steps to keep a number of parks and monuments open during the shutdown in order to avoid a repeat of the outrage.

Despite this, parks began closing on Saturday, including Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, big tourist attractions in New York. The Governor of New York is to use state funds to reopen the iconic statue of Liberty Monday, Reuters reports.

Zoos and Smithsonian

The shutdown could see zoos close, which would spell disaster for fans of the popular panda cam at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington.

The Smithsonian announced it still has funding from the previous year, and will use that to stay open as long as funds last. “The Smithsonian, including its museums, research centers & the National Zoo, will be OPEN Monday, Jan. 22,” it said. “The Smithsonian can use prior year funds still available to us to do so. We will update our status beyond Monday as soon as we know,” it said.  ‬

According to a statement by the Smithsonian Institution, a shutdown would stop the panda, lion and elephant cameras from filming. “National Zoo live-animal cameras, including the panda cam, will not be broadcasting,” it said.

Luckily, the animals will still be fed. “A shutdown will not affect the Zoo’s commitment to the safety of staff and the standard excellence in animal care.”

Military

A government shutdown doesn’t affect the US military operations overseas. Active duty personnel remain working as normal, while non-essential civilian personnel are furloughed.

Should the shutdown go on past February however, many military personnel will be expected to work without being paid.

History Hangs Heavily Over Tulsa’s Lone Black Councilwoman https://briefnews.eu/history-hangs-heavily-over-tulsas-lone-black-councilwoman/ https://briefnews.eu/history-hangs-heavily-over-tulsas-lone-black-councilwoman/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 09:27:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/history-hangs-heavily-over-tulsas-lone-black-councilwoman/ To engage with Vanessa Hall-Harper is to grapple with the tragic history of race relations in Tulsa. Reckoning is the only option when sitting down with the 46-year-old, who, within minutes, is digging into what was — and what could have been.

They called the city councilor’s North Tulsa district “Black Wall Street” in the early 20th century, when African-American aristocrats paraded their automobiles down roads lined with more than 200 Black-owned businesses. But on May 31, 1921, everything changed. Resentment over Black wealth erupted, with white vigilantes taking to the streets, killing at least 300 of their neighbors of color and firebombing their businesses in what would be dubbed a “race riot” by the history books — and then promptly forgotten.

Too often, the past becomes destiny. It’s a thought internalized by Hall-Harper, a history lover since she studied political science and organized sit-ins at the historically Black Jackson State University in Mississippi. “It’s a slap in the face to call it a riot,” she says. But now, the native daughter of a Tulsa structural mechanic can start righting the wrongs of the past. Elected to the city council last year after defeating 12-year incumbent Jack Henderson, she has crafted a constituency around grassroots activism, expanding access to food in her district and reviving traditions that speak to the area’s once thriving African-American community. She has elevated the concerns of those who had forgotten their power, says Chief Amusen, a Black organizer and guidance counselor in Tulsa. “Instead of her being the voice, she became the messenger for the community’s needs. Whether it’s police matters, social justice, mental health, you name it, she’s been a part of it.”

She is the only person of color on the nine-member city council, at a time when the election of Donald Trump has inflamed racial tensions across the country.

It’s quite the ascent for Hall-Harper, a self-professed “class clown” in high school. Her first job after college was flipping burgers at Wendy’s. She later became a receptionist for the Tulsa County Juvenile Bureau and eventually worked her way to manager of the Tulsa Health Department’s Healthy Living program.

Hall-Harper arrives at a key moment for both her city and the nation. She is the only person of color on the nine-member city council, at a time when the election of Donald Trump has inflamed racial tensions across the country, “as bad as during the Civil Rights Movement,” she says. Her historical sense sees similarities between the white jealousy that sparked the Tulsa massacre and the recent reaction critics had — after players knelt to protest racial injustice — to her beloved Dallas Cowboys: “Shut up, because you are fortunate enough to make money,” she says, summarizing their complaints.

Since taking office in January, Hall-Harper has worked with the mayor to create the first African-American Affairs Commission, an action her predecessor had been loathe to champion. She has revived Juneteenth, an annual festival dating back to 1865 that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. and once drew names like Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. Her work was instrumental in bringing a Save-A-Lot to North Tulsa, which has “needed a grocery store for a long time,” says the district’s State Senator Kevin Matthews, who previously backed Henderson. “[People] are excited about some movement on development in the area,” he adds.

Img 8557

In 2021, North Tulsa will become a flash point again, as the city observes the centennial of the Tulsa massacre. Philanthropic organizations have gathered some $ 4 million to date, Hall-Harper says, to enhance the district with revitalized parks and tourist attractions to take advantage of the returning spotlight. “It is true the world will be watching,” says Matthews. Positively spun, the funding will be used to honor the victims and create sustainable businesses in the struggling district. But Hall-Harper is quick to question why it’s taken this long to get the much-needed investment: “You’re doing it now because of the attention the city is going to have,” she says.

Hall-Harper is working with local leaders to create a set of community policing standards — a divisive issue nationally, and in her own home. Last year, she stood with the family of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed Black man shot by the Tulsa police, when they held a press conference after his death. Meanwhile, her husband, Marcus Harper, was the chief officer investigating the case. The college sweethearts make an unlikely duo: Marcus is a brawny officer resembling “Terry Tate, Office Linebacker” of YouTube fame; Vanessa, a petite 5-foot-4, shows her grit through fiery speeches and high-stakes matches of Spades or Dominoes.

Asked her feelings about the police, Hall-Harper doesn’t mince words. Most are good, she says, but “there are a few rotten, horrible apples. They are not above the law, and they do, oftentimes, take on this God-like mentality.” Her husband, meanwhile, acknowledges that clear errors were made in cases like Tamir Rice’s in Cleveland or Philando Castile’s in Minneapolis, but he hesitates to try cops further than they already are. “You’re talking about overhauling the criminal justice system,” Harper says. The couple presents a fascinating portrait: the cop and the councilor caught in a national debate that’s inciting both sides. The conflict is embodied in their daughter, whom they say is as likely to wear a Fraternal Order of the Police shirt as a Black Lives Matter tee on any given day.

Walking in North Tulsa, there’s no ignoring the past for the city councilor. It sits in the bricks beneath her feet, listing the names of the victims from 1921, and in the graffiti behind her that crosses out “RACE RIOT” and replaces it with “MASSACRE” in bold red letters. It will take time to change that legacy in a district that is a shade of its former self — and folks like Hall-Harper working hard to keep history’s clock from turning idly.

Trump’s new health care decision disproportionately affects states that voted heavily for him https://briefnews.eu/trumps-new-health-care-decision-disproportionately-affects-states-that-voted-heavily-for-him/ https://briefnews.eu/trumps-new-health-care-decision-disproportionately-affects-states-that-voted-heavily-for-him/#respond Sun, 15 Oct 2017 07:10:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trumps-new-health-care-decision-disproportionately-affects-states-that-voted-heavily-for-him/ TrumpAP/Manuel Balce Ceneta

President Donald Trump’s decision to end a provision of the Affordable Care Act that was benefiting roughly 6 million Americans helps fulfill a campaign promise, but it also risks harming some of the very people who helped him win the presidency.

Nearly 70 percent of those benefiting from the so-called cost-sharing subsidies live in states Trump won last November, according to an analysis by The Associated Press.

The subsidies are paid to insurers by the federal government to help lower consumers’ deductibles and co-pays. People who benefit will continue receiving the discounts because insurers are obligated by law to provide them. But to make up for the lost federal funding, health insurers will have to raise premiums substantially, potentially putting coverage out of reach for many consumers.

Some insurers may decide to bail out of markets altogether.

“I woke up, really, in horror,” said Alice Thompson, 62, an environmental consultant from the Milwaukee area who purchases insurance on Wisconsin’s federally run health insurance exchange.

Thompson, who spoke with reporters on a call organized by a health care advocacy group, said she expects to pay 30 percent to 50 percent more per year for her monthly premium, potentially more than her mortgage payment. Officials in Wisconsin, a state that went for a Republican presidential candidate for the first time in decades last fall, assumed the federal subsidy would end when they approved premium rate increases averaging 36 percent for the coming year.

An estimated 4 million people were benefiting from the cost-sharing payments in the 30 states Trump carried, according to an analysis of 2017 enrollment data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Of the 10 states with the highest percentage of consumers benefiting from cost-sharing, all but one — Massachusetts — went for Trump.

Kentucky embraced former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act under its last governor, a Democrat, and posted some of the largest gains in getting its residents insured. Its new governor, a Republican, favors the GOP stance to replace it with something else.

Roughly half of the estimated 71,000 Kentuckians buying health insurance on the federal exchange were benefiting from the cost-sharing subsidies Trump just ended. Despite the gains from Obama’s law, the state went for Trump last fall even as he vowed to repeal it.

TrumpAP/Evan Vucci

Consumers such as Marsha Clark fear what will happen in the years ahead, as insurers raise premiums on everyone to make up for the end of the federal money that helped lower deductibles and co-pays.

“I’m stressed out about the insurance, stressed out about the overall economy, and I’m very stressed out about our president,” said Clark, a 61-year-old real estate broker who lives in a small town about an hour’s drive south of Louisville. She pays $ 1,108 a month for health insurance purchased on the exchange.

While she earns too much to benefit from the cost-sharing subsidy, she is worried that monthly premiums will rise so high in the future that it will make insurance unaffordable.

Sherry Riggs has a similar fear. The Fort Pierce, Florida, barber benefits from the deductible and co-pay discounts, as do more than 1 million other Floridians, the highest number of cost-sharing beneficiaries of any state.

She had bypass surgery following a heart attack last year and pays just $ 10 a visit to see her cardiologist and only a few dollars for the medications she takes twice a day.

Her monthly premium is heavily subsidized by the federal government, but she worries about the cost soaring in the future. Florida, another state that swung for Trump, has approved rate increases averaging 45 percent.

“Probably for some people it would be a death sentence,” she said. “I think it’s kind of a tragic decision on the president’s part. It scares me because I don’t think I’ll be able to afford it next year.”

Rates already were rising in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s decision. Insurance regulators in Arkansas, another state that went for Trump, approved premium increases on Friday ranging from 14 percent to nearly 25 percent for plans offered through the insurance marketplace. Had federal cost-sharing been retained, the premiums would have risen by no more than 10 percent.

In Mississippi, another state Trump won, an estimated 80 percent of consumers who buy coverage on the insurance exchange benefit from the deductible and co-pay discounts, the highest percentage of any state. Premiums there will increase by 47 percent next year, after regulators assumed Trump would end the cost-sharing payments.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners has estimated the loss of the subsidies would result in a 12 percent to 15 percent increase in premiums, while the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has put the figure at 20 percent. Experts say the political instability over Trump’s effort to undermine Obama’s health care law could prompt more insurers to leave markets, reducing competition and driving up prices.

In announcing his decision, Trump argued the subsidies were payouts to insurance companies, and the government could not legally continue to make them. The subsidies have been the subject of an ongoing legal battle because the health care law failed to include a congressional appropriation, which is required before federal money can be spent.

The subsidies will cost about $ 7 billion this year.

Many Republicans praised Trump’s action, saying Obama’s law has led to a spike in insurance costs for those who have to buy policies on the individual market.

Among them is Republican Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, a state Trump won. An estimated 78,000 Arizonans were benefiting from the federal subsidies for deductibles and co-pays.

“While his actions do not take the place of real legislative repeal and revitalization of free-market health care, he is doing everything possible to save Americans from crippling health care costs and decreasing quality of care,” Biggs said.

Cassidy reported from Atlanta, Georgia. Hoyer, an AP data journalist, reported from Washington, D.C.

Associated Press writers Jeff Amy in Jackson, Mississippi; Scott Bauer in Madison, Wisconsin; Philip Marcelo in Boston; and Kevin Vineys in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report.

Nissan Mississippi workers vote heavily against unionization https://briefnews.eu/nissan-mississippi-workers-vote-heavily-against-unionization/ https://briefnews.eu/nissan-mississippi-workers-vote-heavily-against-unionization/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 19:50:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nissan-mississippi-workers-vote-heavily-against-unionization/

Workers at Nissan Motor Co Ltd’s plant in Canton, Mississippi, voted nearly two to one against union representation, the company and the United Auto Workers said late on Friday. The vote at the end of a bitterly contested campaign extended a decades-long record of failure by the union to organize a major automaker’s plant in the U.S. South.

The vote at the Canton plant could leave the UAW weakened ahead of contract negotiations with the Detroit Three automakers in 2019, when many analysts are predicting a cyclical slump for U.S. auto sales. The last failed UAW vote in the U.S. South, at a Volkswagen AG plant in Chattanooga in 2014, was far closer than the tally in Mississippi.

Pro-union workers say the Nissan plant – which builds Nissan Murano sport utility vehicles, commercial vans, and Titan and Frontier pickup trucks – has a poor safety record and the automaker moved them to a 401(k) defined retirement plan from a traditional pension fund. The UAW had put 10 years of groundwork into the vote at the Japanese automaker’s Mississippi facility, after two unsuccessful attempts at a Nissan plant in Tennessee, only to fall well short in a bitterly contested campaign that the union maintained was a continuation of the civil rights struggle of the 1960s.

Nissan said the tally of votes, which was overseen by the U.S. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), was 2,244 votes against unionization to 1,307 in favor.\

“With this vote, the voice of Nissan employees has been heard,” Nissan said in a statement. “They have rejected the UAW and chosen to self-represent, continuing the direct relationship they enjoy with the company.”

The UAW has maintained that Nissan has illegally threatened workers with the closure of their plant or the loss of their jobs if they voted in favor of unionization, a claim Nissan hotly denies. That claim has been backed by a number of complaints lodged by the NLRB. The union said in a statement it is asking the NLRB to proceed with a trial to “stop Nissan’s serial commission of unfair labor practices in Mississippi.” The union claims in fresh charges filed with the NLRB that Nissan “conducted repeated captive audience meetings” and played “virtually non-stop anti-union videos” ahead of the vote.

“The result of the election was a setback for these workers, the UAW and working Americans everywhere, but in no way should it be considered a defeat,” UAW president Dennis Williams said in a statement (Reporting by Nick Carey; Editing by Paul Tait and Tom Hogue)

The third-party software updater used to seed last week’s NotPetya worm that shut down computers around the world was compromised more than a month before the outbreak. This is yet another sign the attack was carefully planned and executed.

Researchers from antivirus provider Eset, in a blog post published Tuesday, said the malware was spread through a legitimate update module of M.E.Doc, a tax-accounting application that’s widely used in Ukraine. The report echoed findings reported earlier by Microsoft, Kaspersky Lab, Cisco Systems, and Bitdefender. Eset said a “stealthy and cunning backdoor” used to spread the worm probably required access the M.E.Doc source code. What’s more, Eset said the underlying backdoored ZvitPublishedObjects.dll file was first pushed to M.E.Doc users on May 15, six weeks before the NotPetya outbreak.

“As our analysis shows, this is a thoroughly well-planned and well-executed operation,” Anton Cherepanov, senior malware researcher for Eset, wrote. “We assume that the attackers had access to the M.E.Doc application source code. They had time to learn the code and incorporate a very stealthy and cunning backdoor. The size of the full M.E.Doc installation is about 1.5GB, and we have no way at this time to verify that there are no other injected backdoors.”

89% of CIOs are investing more heavily in innovation due to uncertainty https://briefnews.eu/89-of-cios-are-investing-more-heavily-in-innovation-due-to-uncertainty/ https://briefnews.eu/89-of-cios-are-investing-more-heavily-in-innovation-due-to-uncertainty/#respond Tue, 23 May 2017 05:39:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/89-of-cios-are-investing-more-heavily-in-innovation-due-to-uncertainty/

Nine out of 10 chief information officers are investing more heavily in innovation, according to an annual survey by recruitment firm Harvey Nash Group and accounting firm KPMG.

Two-thirds (64 percent) of organizations are adapting their technology strategies in the midst of unprecedented global political and economic uncertainty, the survey found.

More than half of the respondents (52 percent) said they are investing in more nimble technology platforms. It is clear digital strategies have infiltrated businesses across the globe at an entirely new level. The proportion of organizations surveyed that now have enterprise-wide digital strategies increased 52 percent in just two years, and organizations with a chief digital officer have increased 39 percent over last year.

“From an organizational and cultural perspective, the CIO is now faced with a full transformation to digital, enterprise-wide,” said Harvey Nash president and CEO Bob Miano in a statement. “Digital is without question the CIO’s priority, but especially for legacy organizations, leading this change to a complete, unified digital strategy is top of mind. CIOs are responding by tackling this head-on with innovation and agility.”

To deal with that change, companies are increasing their demand for enterprise architects — the fastest growing technology skill this year, up 26 percent compared to 2016.

Cybersecurity vulnerability — as demonstrated by the latest ransomware case — is at an all-time high, with a third of IT leaders (32 percent) reporting their organization had been subject to a major cyberattack in the past 24 months — a 45 percent increase from 2013. Only one in five (21 percent) say they are “very well” prepared to respond to these attacks, down from 29 percent in 2014.

Despite recent headline-grabbing cyberattacks, the biggest jump in threats comes from insider attacks, increasing from 40 percent to 47 percent over last year.

“In order to stay ahead of the unprecedented levels of disruption and change facing today’s CIOs, they have needed to become more strategic and functionally integrated,” said Denis Berry, KPMG principal and U.S. CIO advisory leader, in a statement. “Today’s technology executives need to understand how business models impact their organization’s infrastructure — not only from a technology standpoint but from an economic, social, political, and regulatory one as well, especially in order to stay nimble, adapt to an uncertain climate, and truly discover where the opportunities are.”

The survey is in its 19th year, and the company says it is the largest IT leadership survey in the world. The survey was conducted from December 19, 2016, to April 3, 2017, across 86 countries; 4,498 CIOs and tech leaders responded.

Other findings: Digital leadership has changed. Almost one in five CIOs (18 percent) report their organizations have “very effective” digital strategies.

CIOs at these digitally enabled organizations are almost twice as likely to be leading innovation across the business (41 percent versus 23 percent), and are investing at four times the rate of non-leaders in cognitive automation (25 percent versus 7 percent).

Overall, the survey found almost two-thirds (61 percent) of CIOs from larger organizations are already investing or planning to invest in digital labor.

CIOs love their jobs, and are more likely to be involved at the board level. The number of CIOs who are “very fulfilled” in their role is at a three-year high — rising from 33 percent in 2015 to 39 percent this year. For the first time in a decade, more than seven in 10 CIOs (71 percent) believe the CIO role is becoming more strategic.

Ninety-two percent of CIOs joined a board meeting in the past 12 months. However, the average CIO lifespan is just five years or less (59 percent), although many want to stay longer.

RT spoke to Qusai Nasr from Homs, who lost a relative when the US attacked the Shayrat airfield with dozens of Tomahawk missiles early Friday.

“All of the officers [stationed] there have actually taken part in the Syrian campaign against ISIS [Islamic State],” Nasr said, referring to the base, which is located near Homs.

According to Nasr, 15 people were killed in the airstrike although it has not led to an extensive damage to the airfield. The airstrike, however, resulted in the death of five officers and soldiers who were at the base, he said.

The pretext for the attack, that the Syrian government and the air force stationed at the base in particular, were allegedly behind the chemical incident in rebel-held Idlib province on Tuesday, is hard to believe, Nasr argues.

“There is no evidence that the chemical attack was led by [Syrian aircraft] from this spot,” Nasr said, adding that neither the US nor rebels “show evidence of an aerial strike, the aerial deployment of the chemical weapon.”

“If it was the case thousands of people might have been killed in a town that has a lot of people inside but the number that they said, and I think, they are exaggerating, are very, very little,” he added.

While the strike has dealt little damage to the key airbase infrastructure, it will embolden terrorists, as was the case when the US-led coalition “mistakenly” launched an hour-long raid on the Syrian army positions in Deir ez-Zor in September, killing up to some 100 soldiers and injuring 100 more.

“On the same day of [the Deir ez-Zor] attack, ISIS launched a massive attack on the Syrian army and they gained ground. Today also after the attack on Shayrat Airbase, there was also an attack on the Syrian post in eastern Homs [province] that the Syria army managed to repel,” Nasr said.

Earlier, it was reported that the Syrian forces struggled to quash the terrorist offensive in the area due to the lack of air support from the airbase.

Homs Governor Talal Barazi told RT on Friday that Islamic State attempted to use the airstrike to gain control of strategic oil areas near Palmyra, but the Syrian army thwarted the move.

Judging by the developments on the ground, Nasr said that the US attack “actually helps the terrorists, and helps ISIL and Al-Nusra [Front militants].”

“ISIL and Al-Nusra are actually put on the terrorism list by the US. It is really strange that the United States would attack an airbase that is heavily involved in a campaign against ISIL.”

Speaking to RT earlier on Friday, Homs Governor Barazi said that 14 people were killed in the strike, including nine civilians. At least thirteen women and children, living in the nearby villages, have been injured in the attack, he said.

The strike has caused mixed reaction within international community. While Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey and Syrian rebels and a number of western countries, including the UK, France and Germany, have expressed support for Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to attack Syria, others, including Russia, Iran and Bolivia have decried the strike as unwarranted aggression, bearing resemblance to the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Russia’s President Putin has denounced the strike as an act of “aggression against a sovereign nation” while Russian deputy acting envoy to the UN, Vladimir Safronkov, said it had “raised the spirits of terrorists,” accusing Washington of unwillingness to conduct a “real investigation” in the suspected chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun.
