Kate, 53, was back on hand to present Good Morning Britain, just days after the news broke her husband Derek, 53, had become the longest case of coronavirus in Britain. The television star’s spouse remains in intensive care after being put into a coma to try and suppress the disease earlier this year. With the number of COVID cases starting to rise across the country, the newsreader made a plea to those watching the ITV show at home to follow the rules as they don’t know the “devastation” the illness can cause.

Following a discussion with Dr Hilary Jones, 67, on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s, 55, latest press conference, Kate said: “Derek’s mum and dad haven’t been able to see him.”

Fighting back the tears, she added: “I think if they can go six months without giving a hug to their son – making me feel emotional – who is so desperately ill, then the rest of us can make it through.

“I have huge sympathy with people who are fed up with it.

“I think if you haven’t been directly affected by it, you haven’t seen the devastation but your life has been devastated; your livelihood, your ability to feel a sense of joy then, of course, you’re going to feel frustrated.

“But it does make me tempted to show a picture of Derek in his current state and say you don’t want this in your life,” the presenter continued, issuing the warning to viewers.

Great British Bake Off: Channel 4 star’s heartbreaking confession on father exposed https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-channel-4-stars-heartbreaking-confession-on-father-exposed/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-channel-4-stars-heartbreaking-confession-on-father-exposed/#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2020 22:02:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-channel-4-stars-heartbreaking-confession-on-father-exposed/

The popular Channel 4 baking show is into its second week and already contestants have caused a stir. In the first week of ‘Bake Off’, Sura accidentally knocked fellow competitor Dave’s pineapple upside-down cakes onto the floor. Yesterday viewers vented after Mak was eliminated instead of Rowan, whose show stopper was described as “tasting like rubber”. In addition to the TV show dramas, new presenter Matt Lucas was cast in place of Sandi Toksvig, who quit the show earlier this year. The host has divided public opinion so far. Some took offence to his impersonation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson‘s “bumbling coronavirus briefing”, which received hundreds of Ofcom complaints.

Prior to landing the presenting job on ‘Bake Off’ alongside Noel Fielding, Lucas was best known for his comedic sketches with former ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ judge David Walliams.

They starred in the BBC hits ‘Little Britain’ and ‘Come Fly With Me’, both of which have attracted criticism in recent months over their portrayal of black characters.

Lucas said: “If I could go back and do ‘Little Britain’ again, I wouldn’t make those jokes about transvestites. I wouldn’t play black characters. Basically I wouldn’t make the show now.”

He admitted there was “no bad intent” behind their gags and their only crime was “greed” – because they wanted “to show off what a diverse bunch of people we could play”.

The star believed his humour was nurtured from an early age, shortly after he developed alopecia at the age of six.

He told Big Issue magazine in 2017: “People asked me about it every day… I told people I’d had a car accident when I was four and the shock had made it fall out because that’s what I believed at the time.

“Then I developed a repertoire of jokes in response to being asked about it, feigning surprise at the information that I was bald.

“I had this wig I’d worn as a kid and I’d bring it into college for a laugh.”

The stigma attached to being hairless during his school years was also coupled with his fear about coming out as gay.

Lucas claimed his teenage self would be “very, very shocked” that he was “able to live a fulfilling and loving life a gay man”.

He was married TV producer Kevin McGee in a civil partnership in 2006 but had it dissolved two years later – and the following year his former partner died from suicide.

He added: “That was not something I thought was ever on the cards.

“The idea that my family and friends would accept me and then almost forget about my being gay, that would have been a huge relief.”

Despite his openness about his sexuality, the one person who he was never able to tell was his father.

Lucas said: “I found out, four years after he died, that my dad had told my aunt he’d worked out I was gay and said ‘He loved me and just wanted me to be happy’.

“I was happy to hear it but I wish he’d said it to me at the time. It would have saved me a lot of anxiety.

“But he was waiting for me to tell him and he probably thought we had plenty of time ahead of us.”

By the time his aunt told him about his father’s secret support of his sexuality, he had “come out to most people”.

Lucas said: “So I was beyond craving acceptance and I was moving on to the next phase of my life.

“It felt like that was the postscript to those years of worry, a final resolution.”

After Lucas was confirmed as the new host of ‘Bake Off’, he revealed that similarly to Noel Fielding he had an audition at a garden centre.

There he had to “interview people” to test how he got on with strangers of all ages.

In a bid to keep his audition secret, he had to tell inquisitive passersby that he was working on a “horticultural show”.

In April, Lucas told ‘Good Morning Britain’ that he was attracted to the role because of the ‘perks’ of the job.

He quipped: “Free cake are you kidding it’s a no brainer! They were talking to various people and apparently Noel had a dream that I was the co-presenter.”

EastEnders spoilers: Kush Kazemi to exit in heartbreaking twist as Davood Ghadami departs https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-kush-kazemi-to-exit-in-heartbreaking-twist-as-davood-ghadami-departs/ https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-kush-kazemi-to-exit-in-heartbreaking-twist-as-davood-ghadami-departs/#respond Sun, 27 Sep 2020 13:26:58 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-kush-kazemi-to-exit-in-heartbreaking-twist-as-davood-ghadami-departs/

EastEnders resident Kush Kazemi (played by Davood Ghadami) has been at the centre of all things Slater related in recent months after he found love blossom with Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace). But as their romance continues and the reality of looking after the clan’s young children sets in, it’s been confirmed there will be another twist in store after it was confirmed Davood would be leaving once his current contract comes to an end.

Kush moved to Walford after struggling to cope with the death of his wife but soon settled into his new life in the Square.

The market trader soon found love with Shabnam Masood (Rahkee Thakrah) and in the years since has become one of the fans’ favourite characters.

But, fans of the BBC soap were gutted last night when it was confirmed the character would be leaving in the coming months.

“Bosses have a huge plot planned but although Davood was told in January, his departure it is not for a very long time yet, in fact, Kush will be on screen until well into 2021.

“It’s a shame and he will be missed by everyone at Elstree but sometimes the cost of having a big storyline means losing big characters,” a show insider told Metro.co.uk.

An EastEnders spokesperson also told the publication: We can confirm Davood will be leaving EastEnders when his contract comes to an end next year.

“Davood has been a wonderful addition to EastEnders and we wish him all the best for the future.”

Kate Oates, head of continuing drama at the BBC, added: “Davood is a fantastic actor and a hugely popular company member, so we will miss him hugely.”

MORE TO FOLLOW…

Elsewhere, the market stallholder has become known for his very close friendship with Martin Fowler (James Bye), despite them warring after discovering the paternity of young Arthur Fowler.

In more recent months, he’s struck up a romance with fiery Kat Slater and has become a clear father figure to her children.

After the news broke on Saturday evening, fans flocked to Twitter to express their sadness at the decision.

One shared: “Omg I’m devastated over this news. Kush is one of the best male characters. What a loss for the show! #EastEnders.”

Another added: “I’m not happy about this either. I love Kush and he’s a genuinely nice guy too. I will definitely miss Davood.”

“One of the strongest characters at the moment, such a bad decision,” wrote a third.

A fourth commented: “Oh no I’m so sorry to hear that. I really like Kush #EastEnders.”

“This is so sad. I love the character, will be sorry to see him go,” agreed another.

EastEnders airs  Mondays and Fridays at 8pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.

Piers Morgan opens up on heartbreaking interview with Vinnie Jones in a Life Stories first https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-opens-up-on-heartbreaking-interview-with-vinnie-jones-in-a-life-stories-first/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-opens-up-on-heartbreaking-interview-with-vinnie-jones-in-a-life-stories-first/#respond Sat, 05 Sep 2020 19:41:27 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-opens-up-on-heartbreaking-interview-with-vinnie-jones-in-a-life-stories-first/

Piers Morgan, 55, has interviewed Vinnie, 55, several times before and spoke with the professional footballer on Good Morning Britain after Tanya Jones passed away last July following a six-year battle with cancer. As the actor has just released a book about his spouse, who died at the age of 53, the presenter thought this would be the time to speak with him again since his life has changed so drastically. However, this will be the second time the famous face has appeared on Life Stories – something no other person has done on the ITV show.

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories has been on the air since 2009 and has seen the outspoken journalist talk candidly with a whole plethora of stars.

Though, no one has ever made two appearances in the hot seat as they usually reflect on their whole life in their original interview.

Therefore, the former professional footballer’s conversation with the presenter is even more of a rarity as he opens up about the loss of his wife and living a completely different life without her.

Discussing being back with Vinnie in a socially distanced arena – since the original interview 11 years ago – Piers explained: “Vinnie’s the first time we’ve ever had a return guest.”

Of the reasoning for inviting him back, the broadcaster said: “I knew Tanya for a long time and observed at first hand the extraordinary marriage that they had, through thick and thin for many years, and then ultimately their wonderful love story ending in complete tragedy.”

“I felt when I read this book that Vinnie has done, it’s just so powerful. So eloquent, so moving, so inspiring,” he continued.

“The last time I interviewed Vinnie on Life Stories, Tanya was sitting in the audience. But as he says, his life has now been two lives.

“One with Tanya, and one that he is trying to build now after Tanya. And I think that’s going to make for a very powerful show.”

The presenter admitted he did expect tears as his guest reflected on his life with his late wife but there was a reason Vinnie wanted to share his story.

In the short preview, Vinnie watched back his original Life Stories interview where he talks about his love for his wife.

Getting emotional and on reflection of seeing himself so happy in his marriage, the former footballer tells the presenter: “No, I suppose it’s probably the memories more than anything. Just a beautiful person, Piers.”

The actor has been praised for speaking so openly about his grief, with viewers getting behind him when he signed up to Celebrity X Factor last year.

Having had such a diverse career is what has made Piers so interested to explore the last decade with his guest.

The Good Morning Britain host said: “His life story is amazing. He went from being a hod carrier to winning the FA Cup and captaining Wales.

“Then becoming a movie star who has made over 60 or 70 movies with some of the biggest stars in the world.

“He is a remarkable character, but it will be a very different Vinnie who I interview ten years on from our first Life Stories encounter.

“He has now been tee-total for seven years, and his beloved wife has so sadly died, he has a very different life now.”

Piers Morgan‘s Life Stories airs tonight at 10pm on ITV.

‘Queen needs you’ Royal photographer in heartbreaking plea for Prince Harry to return https://briefnews.eu/queen-needs-you-royal-photographer-in-heartbreaking-plea-for-prince-harry-to-return/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-needs-you-royal-photographer-in-heartbreaking-plea-for-prince-harry-to-return/#respond Mon, 17 Aug 2020 13:18:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/queen-needs-you-royal-photographer-in-heartbreaking-plea-for-prince-harry-to-return/

Arthur expressed sadness at the fact the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had decided to depart as senior members of the Royal Family.

When asked by Eamonn how he felt about the duo leaving, he told the host: “I can’t believe this has happened.”

He soon divulged further information about how the relationship with Harry had changed after Meghan came into the fold.

“For the first year I thought she was sensational,” Arthur said, but he soon explained how things had quickly gone downhill.

“I did lots of trips with her,” Arthur continued. “I went to Morrocoo and I went all around Britain (and) Ireland and she was great.”

However, he explained: “Four times, maybe three times, I asked the Palace if we as a media group could meet Meghan and it never happened.

“I think if she had met us things might have been different.

“She might have seen that we’re human and unfortunately she did get some bad press, and that was a mistake.”

“Harry’s badly needed here. I hope in March, he’s got until March to rethink it, he comes back,” he noted.

Elsewhere on This Morning today, Eamonn was forced to apologise to ITV viewers for a major geographical blunder.

He and Ruth were joined by paddleboarder Buster live from Weymouth after a clip of a local seal named Sammy had been joining in with the fun off the coast.

However, when introducing Buster, Eamonn told viewers they were about to be transported to Devon – not Dorset.

“Devon has another local celebrity, or shall I say seal-ebrity,” Eamonn told viewers.

Ruth added: “Sammy has popped up in various locations along the coast over the past month and he has even started jumping on paddle boards.”

The pair then said they were cutting to a beach in Devon, even though Weymouth is located in Dorset.

Pointing out the error, one fan tweeted: “#ThisMorning Geography lesson Weymouth is in Dorset not Devon!”

This Morning continues weekdays at 10am on ITV.

Luke Wilson Talks Stargirl’s Appeal, a ‘Heartbreaking’ Reveal, and How He Accidentally Got Spoiled on Season 2 https://briefnews.eu/luke-wilson-talks-stargirls-appeal-a-heartbreaking-reveal-and-how-he-accidentally-got-spoiled-on-season-2/ https://briefnews.eu/luke-wilson-talks-stargirls-appeal-a-heartbreaking-reveal-and-how-he-accidentally-got-spoiled-on-season-2/#respond Mon, 27 Jul 2020 12:31:38 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/luke-wilson-talks-stargirls-appeal-a-heartbreaking-reveal-and-how-he-accidentally-got-spoiled-on-season-2/

RELATED STORIES

It was not DC’s Stargirl in and of itself but series boss Geoff Johns that sold film vet/onetime Roadies manager Luke Wilson on the superhero series.

Speaking with TVLine in the Q&A below, Wilson shares how a terrific first meeting with Johns (who based the Courtney Whitmore comic book character on his late sister) — coupled with Pat Dugan’s role as the hapless “equipment manager” for a team of Golden Age heroes — drew him to the freshman series, which recently got renewed for Season 2.

Before we get to that second season, Courtney (played by Brec Bassinger), her mom Barbara (Amy Smart) and stepdad Pat will have to navigate the “pop quiz” that is about to rock everyone’s world — and in turn possibly derail Stargirl‘s heroic mission — in the 11th of this season’s 13 episodes, titled “Shining Knight” and premiering Monday on DC Universe/Tuesday on The CW.

Here is what Wilson had to say about that imminent blast from the past, next month’s finale and much more.

Stargirl Geoff Johns Luke Wilson

Wilson with Geoff Johns

TVLINE | When I spoke to Geoff Johns ahead of the season, he went on about how vested you were, from go, in both the show and the character.
Well, I was really invested first and foremost with Geoff. I just liked him so much when he and I initially met to talk about doing it. We kind of have similar stories — we had come out to L.A. at the same time, like around ’94; he’d driven out from Chicago with a couple of friends, and I’d driven out with my brothers and a couple friends. We were kind of laughing about being “old gunslingers.”

TVLINE | And what about the character spoke to you and drew you in?
Reading it, I was thinking, like, yeah, OK, I like the idea of Pat Dugan, a father and a stepfather who is also not a superhero but kind of “worked for” these superheroes as kind of like the equipment manager, you know?

TVLINE | He’s jogging behind them, lugging a duffle bag of their gadgets.
Yeah! That’s always the way I thought of it because even back in high school, I always would find myself kind of like looking at the equipment managers, thinking, “This is great, this guy’s found a way to be right in the thick of it and a member of the team.”

I wasn’t into comic books. As I’ve told Geoff, I grew up reading MAD Magazine. That’s what I was really into. And if you were backed into a corner, you’d read Cracked. And yet I’ve always gone into comic book stores because I like the vibe, I always got a kick out of the guys that were in there, and I always thought comic book art was really cool. That Roy Lichtenstein kind of pop art thing I always found to be cool-looking. So I liked the idea of going to work for somebody like Geoff who was an expert in this, something that I didn’t know anything about.

This is the first time my nephews have ever watched something I’ve done, and that’s been really fun. Like Geoff said at the beginning, he wanted to make something that had a good feeling, that whole families could watch. And I just thought, “Gosh, I really like that idea.” And sure enough, that, to me, is exactly what he’s delivered.

TVLINE | Have you recommended any needle drops beyond Johnny Cash in Episode 2? [It was Wilson who suggested “One Piece at a Time” for Pat’s corn field training montage as S.T.R.I.P.E.]
[Laughs] I made a lot of suggestions, and it’s always really, really fun when someone takes an idea and actually uses it. You can get used to those guys who are like, “Yeah, yeah, that’s a good idea,” and they never use anything.

Stargirl Mike PatTVLINE | No, that song choice was perfect.
That was a song I’d found on some Johnny Cash compilation back in the early ’90s, that I always thought was really funny. Yeah, Geoff’s been great about especially listening, also with the scenes with myself and Trae Romano, who plays my son. When we were in Atlanta shooting, we’d go to basketball games, and I’d go to dinner with Trae and his dad, and we’d kind of come up with ideas here and there. In the last episode, there’s a little scene where Trae says he’s going to come to the garage and spend the night with Pat when he’s having problems with Barbara, and I had that thing where I start to tell Mike that I love him, and he says, “OK, don’t get all shaky on me, big guy!” It takes a certain kind of person to think that that’s funny, like Geoff does and the director did. I love stuff like that, where you have something where like, “OK, this guy’s going to tell his son how much he likes him, and then you’ve got the son saying, ‘Hey, hey, take it easy, big guy.’”

TVLINE | Speaking of Barbara, how are things for the two of them heading into this episode? You were pretty deep into the doghouse for a hot minute there.
Yeah, majorly into the doghouse. I think as things get more serious and as Barb learns more, there’s almost not time to be mad at Pat. She’s got to figure out what her game plan is — getting out of Blue Valley and taking care of Courtney and Mike, and so I feel like we kind of band together, if anything.

Stargirl Barbara CourtneyTVLINE | The promo for this week reveals that Sam Kurtis (played by Enlisted’s Geoff Stults) shows up in Blue Valley after replying to Barbara’s email. And one of the results, I noticed, is that this is a different kind of episode. There’s a lot of character work going on.
It is different. Since the show started, there’s been that whole thing with Courtney and the locket with the picture and thinking Starman’s her father, and getting told Starman’s not her father by me the whole time, and then Barb breaks it down for her and says, “Starman’s not your father, and Pat’s the only guy that’s ever been there for us.” And then Sam Kurtis shows up, and yeah, it was a really fun episode to do. And the actor, Geoff, did a really good job with it. To me, it was cool because Sam isn’t an over-the-top, sleazy villain, like James Woods in Casino. It’s like, “OK, is this guy a good guy or is he a bad guy?” He seems protective of Courtney, and then there’s this whole thing about the locket that he has that seems very believable and also really heartbreaking to me.

TVLINE | What’s brilliant about Stults’ casting is they did have this conundrum of, “How do you introduce Courtney’s father but he isn’t played by Joel McHale, and yet she’s got a picture that looks like Joel McHale in her locket?” And they solved it.
Oh, big time. I mean, I still look at that picture and I’m like, “Did they like computer blend Joel and the other guy…?”

TVLINE | What can you say about how’s Sam’s return affects Courtney?
It definitely throws her off, and that’s one thing that I’ve always liked about the show and working on the show. When I first signed on, I wondered what it was going to be like to work with all these millennials — actually, they might even be the group behind the millennials! I was like, “Are they going to be on their phone, are they going to be kind of distant?” But they’re all such great kids in real life. Brec played it so well. Her portrayal of Courtney and the thing with the father showing back up was very touching to me.

TVLINE | Also in this next episode, we get to finally spend some quality time with “Justin the janitor.”
Mark Ashworth is from Atlanta — I think he’s Scottish? — and he did a great job. It’s been cool how they laid him into all these previous episodes where you kind of see him at the high school, and you can’t tell if he’s mentally unstable, or really nice, or a villain.

TVLINE | Pat seems almost heartbroken to see this guy in this state, having known what and who he once was.
Yeah, it’s like seeing an old member of the team that seems kind of unstable and doesn’t even necessarily recognize Pat or anything like that.

TVLINE | What kind of a season finale are we going to get in a few weeks, on Aug. 11?
It has always been impressive to me how Geoff and James Dale Robinson, who’s a writer and a producer, have managed to ratchet it up. I don’t watch it on DC Universe; I’ve been waiting until each Tuesday night and watching it [on The CW], and it’s been really fun to do it that way. The table read is the only time I’d ever see the other scenes, so I really am seeing it for the first time, like everybody else, and hearing from, like, my mom and my aunt and her daughters and their kids, saying, “Gosh, this last episode was even better than the one before!” I think people are feeling that the suspense is building. And in terms of the finale…

TVLINE | Will there be cliffhangers? Will it tease a new Season 2 threat?
I think you’re going to learn a lot more about the Injustice Society’s plan — not just for Blue Valley, but for world domination. And there’s an epic battle at the end…. In the best way, it’s a mixture of a big finale and also some closure, but when you look at the overall picture, there’s still major turmoil underneath the surface.

I was kidding around with Brec this week about how, back when we didn’t know if there’d be a Season 2, we’d be watching these episodes, like, “Gosh, this is so great, I hope there’s a Season 2.” But then you always start to prepare yourself for it being just a one-off — “Well, we had a good time.” “We’re proud of the work we all did.” “It was great getting to work with Geoff….” Like, I’ve made movies before that were well-received but nobody saw them, so they were considered failures. So when this got renewed for a second season, I think Brec was like, “You mean I’ve got to start eating healthy again??” [Laughs] I had same feeling! I’ve been eating pizzas and burgers, putting on the COVID 20 pounds, so I was like, OK, I’ve got to get back in shape now. But yeah, I think it’s been really well set up for Season 2.

I remember when we were making the show, I’d go to Geoff Johns’ office and just kind of sit on the couch and read, and one day when I was in there, there was a big white board just sitting there. I looked up at the board, and there’s all this writing and all these plot points—

TVLINE | And you realized you were looking at Season 2?
Yeah! At the time I was already kind of overwhelmed with the Justice Society, the Injustice Society, the Seven Soldiers of Victory… remembering all these names… so I was like, “OK, what the hell is this? How am I going to learn all this [for Season 1]?” And then Geoff walked in, like, “Oh, that’s Season 2. We’re already breaking it down.” I was like, “Thank God!” So yeah, those guys have already got it all planned out. I don’t know what the plan is, but….

Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson

Owen and Luke Wilson

TVLINE | Do you know if the production is going to stay put in Georgia, even as a CW original for Season 2?
We’ll shoot it there again. We just don’t know, obviously, when.

TVLINE | So they’re not going to move you to Vancouver?
No, I don’t think so. Not that I know of. My brother, Owen, was two months into a Marvel show (Disney+’s Loki) and they had to hit pause on that, so I’m hoping that we’ll both go back to work in Atlanta at the same time. It’d be fun to live together, with him on a Marvel thing and me on a DC thing. Hopefully it all goes down!

Neighbours Chloe Brennan (April Rose Pengilly) is set for an untimely shock next week when she finds out she’s pregnant with her first child. But with her deteriorating health condition, will she decide to keep the baby or suffer a heartbreaking loss?

Back in 2019, Chloe was given the devastating news that she has Huntington’s Disease, a hereditary condition which results in the death of brain cells and can cause depression, memory loss and difficulty walking.

Although shocked at the diagnosis and feeling helpless because there is no cure, she’s vowed to live life to the fullest.

Recently, her marriage to Pierce Greyson (Tim Robards) has been less than perfect, and she decides to hold off telling him the news that will change their lives forever.

While they were in discussions about fostering a child, their chances were slashed by Pierce’s son Hendrix (Benny Turland), who wasn’t happy at the thought of another kid joining their family.

While Chloe knows that her husband will be over the moon with the pregnancy news, this only adds to her difficult decision.

As Huntington’s Disease is genetic, she worries about passing the disorder onto their unborn baby.

What will she do?

If she tells Pierce about the baby, it would complicate things if she decides she can’t keep it.

But if she decides to have an abortion without keeping him in the loop, will she be able to live with herself?

Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) finds out and spills the big news to Pierce himself, leading to more tension in their marriage as he wonders why she withheld telling him such important news.

Actress April recently told Radio Times what goes through her character’s head when keeping the pregnancy a secret amid battling the disorder.

“For Chloe, she sees it as a death sentence and it’s been extremely difficult for her to come to terms with it and watch her mother deal with it.

“All of that kind of leads her to not immediately tell Pierce.”

This week on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Yo-Yo aimed to get her Inhuman mojo back, and to that end was accompanied by May on a trip to Afterlife circa 1983. Alas, they were not alone in their interest in the Inhuman homebase….

With the Zephyr’s pit stops in time getting shorter and shorter — akin to the pattern of a rock skipping across water — the ship runs the risk of soon doing a “jump within a jump,” which does not sound good. But a rapidly pulsating protective shield surrounds the jump drive, preventing anyone from disconnecting the regulator. Unless said person was superfast.

Yo-Yo and May make a beeline in the Quinjet for Afterlife, where they don’t get the friendliest reception from Jiaying’s associate, Li, who with blind teleporter Gordon is chasing a young woman named Kora through the woods. Delivered to Jiaying, Yo-Yo proves using a diviner that she is an Inhuman, but lost her powers — presumably due to Shrike poisoning. Jiaying is curious to know how a power might be removed, so she agrees to run Yo-Yo through some therapies, including a proposed “mind meld” of sorts with newly empathic May. But when that touchy-feely tactic falls short, the ladies decide to slug it out, via a sparring session , an exercise that sparks for Yo-Yo memories of Tess’ death, Ruby’s, and others. The final flash May senses, though, is of a young Elena, cowering in a closet with a little boy.

Sitting down with May, Yo-Yo detailed that around age 10, after her dad got mixed up with some bad people, she went to live with her uncle and cousin. Trouble followed her, though, and on the night glimpsed, one of her father’s enemies roughed up/leaned on her uncle for money owed. When the thug at one point spotted and set aside her abuela’s gold cross necklace, Elena sneaked out of the closet to take it back. When the thug realized  it was gone, he took it out on the uncle. A fight over a gun ensued, and the uncle wound up dead.

“I should never have taken it,” present-day Yo-Yo lamented. “I should have stayed still.”

Like a bad penny, Nathaniel Malick showed up at Afterlife to woo away the disgruntled and highly combustible Kora, whose powers Jiaying was hoping to remove — seeing as the young girl is her daughter (and thus Daisy’s half-sister??). Returning to the Zephyr, Yo-Yo sighed that, still powerless, she could be no help with the time drive. When May reassured, “You’ll bounce back,” Yo-Yo had an epiphany: “I don’t have to bounce back!” And on that note, she speedstered one-way to the time drive and extracted the regulator between pulses — though, at episode’s end, the Zephyr nonetheless got pulled into an unexpected jump, the ship and team’s fate left TBD.

TVLine asked Natalia Cordova-Buckley about discovering Elena’s sad backstory, and this is what she said:

I love that it came up, because though it had never been discussed with the writers, I always had some sort of idea that something very, very tragic must have happened to Yo-Yo. We never really discuss if her mom is still alive, if she knew about her dad [who in the comics was a villain]… That was never spoken of. But I knew that if that was her past in the comic books, on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. something really harsh had to have happened for her to have the guarded personality she’s got.

Also, I love that it reflects her way of always trying to save the people she loves, but sometimes she makes a mistake — and she holds that pain in her heart. She always thought that doing what she did [that night] when she was young hurt her family, so she has carried that a long time. What’s interesting about doing TV shows is that that wasn’t written, and yet somehow in every episode it appeared there’s a bit of the heaviness Yo-Yo carries from her past. It was awesome for the writers to pick that up and bring it to life. In a lot of hero stories, whether they’re fictional or people that have lived in this world, there’s always a very tragic crime that defines who they are, and I always wondered what that was for Yo-Yo. This brings it full circle, and you understand why it’s all so personal for her.

TVLine also asked NC-B and Ming-Na Wen when the Zephyr landed after its latest, unwanted jump. If the outcome is anywhere near as bad as feared. “It’s never good,” said Wen. “It’s never good.”

Also in this week’s episode: Jemma gifted Sousa with a snazzy prosthetic leg… Coulson slowly but surely received a new body… and we (and Deke) saw Jemma record a video message to Fitz, inviting us to wonder when we might see him in the flesh. (This was prior to castmate Elizabeth Henstridge throwing patient fans a bone here.) Alas, Cordova-Buckley and Wen (quite adorably) played coy when asked about the MIA genius.

TVLINE | We’re past the final season’s midpoint now. When will we see Fitz again — sooner versus later?
MING | Who’s Fitz…?
NATALIA | Fitz hasn’t been around…? What do you mean?
MING | Yeah, what?
NATALIA | I don’t think we can tell you….
MING | But Matt tried, one last time! You tried one last time before the series ends. [Laughs] You’re the eternal optimist.

What did you think of the episode “After, Before”?

“We knew it was going to happen, but when it finally did happen we heard from the hospital, who said it’s incredible how many people, and it is this extraordinary physical thing that a person who is near the end of their life who without even knowing maybe, waits until family have left the room and then they go quietly on their own.

“And that’s tough you know, that’s tough, he tried to sneak away, but we caught him.

“You can’t blame yourself, you know it’s funny I still, obviously, find it tough to talk after all these years.”

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am.
