US tennis great Vitas Gerulaitis once declared that “nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row” after ending Jimmy Connors’ 16-match winning streak against him.
The Bullets know how Gerulaitis felt after putting a dent in their own hoodoo with a 104-85 win over Illawarra at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Thursday night.
Since the Bullets re-entered the NBL in the 2016-17 season, the Hawks had won eight of the nine clashes between the sides.
Illawarra owned Brisbane when you added four pre-season wins to the tally. But the Bullets put a stop to the rot to claim their fifth win of the season and temporarily climb back into the NBL’s top four.
Bullets import Lamar Patterson oozed class with 24 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals. He was head and shoulders above everyone on the court.
Jason Cadee (15 points, five assists) and Cam Gliddon (15 points) were the chief support acts for the Bullets who found their range at the offensive end and produced defensive stops at the right times.
Mika Vukona (11 points, eight rebounds), Reuben Te Rangi (11 points) and Stephen Holt (12 points) also did plenty of damage coming off the bench for Brisbane.
Brian Conklin and AJ Ogilvy added 16 points apiece to be the best for the Hawks who slumped to their fifth loss in six matches and a 3-7 record.
The Bullets were staring down the barrel of a fourth-straight loss which would have dumped them down to seventh on the ladder.
But they blew the Hawks off the court in third quarter, outscoring the visitors 24-13 to set-up a 79-66 buffer at the last change.
With Cadee leading the charge for Brisbane with eight points and two assists for the third term, Brisbane emerged from the halftime break with all guns blazing and they rediscovered their upbeat offensive tempo.
Brisbane led 55-53 at halftime after the Hawks fought their way back into the contest in a scrappy second quarter with Patterson (13 points, three assists) and Gliddon (12 points from four of five three-point attempts) leading the way for the Bullets.
Aided by a lopsided foul count of 13-7 at halftime — and 10-6 in the second quarter alone — Illawarra upped their defensive intensity after allowing Brisbane to shoot at a remarkable 68 per cent from the fields in the first term.
Brisbane got out to a 13-point cushion late in the first quarter before taking a 35-24 advantage into the first break with seven players getting on the scoreboard for the deadly accurate and freewheeling home side.
The Bullets went on a blistering 10-run early in the first quarter to stamp their authority on the match.
But under astute head coach Rob Beveridge, the Hawks have the ability to make significant in-game adjustments and they were able to shutdown Brisbane’s free-flowing offence while exploiting their size advantage with Conklin, Ogilvy the prime movers in the second quarter comeback.

The Brownlow Medallist and four-time premiership star departed Waverley Park in 2016 to extend his playing career by one season at West Coast in a deal which would see him transition into an assistant coaching role this year.
Mitchell was contracted to spend a further two years working under Adam Simpson at the Eagles but expressed a desire to return home earlier this year for family reasons, West Coast eventually deciding to let him have his wish.

BUCKY’S TAKE: GARY BUCKENARA REVIEWS THE TRADE PERIOD
“I’m really excited to return to Hawthorn, a true family club, and it feels really special to get back to the place I spent 15 years of my playing career,” Mitchell said.
“Perth is a great place, but it became apparent that with the heavy travel commitments, and living in an isolated city away from our support network, was not conducive with a young family. I spoke to West Coast mid-year and explained my intention.
“Craig Vozzo (Eagles football boss) was so supportive and we worked together to ensure that this would not be a distraction for the players. I am glad we did, as finishing my two years at West Coast with a premiership was a special experience.”
Hawthorn general manager of football Graham Wright said the club was thrilled to have Mitchell return.
“Sam has been a huge part of the Hawks family over many years and we know he will bring a great deal to our club as a coach, like he did as a player,” Wright said.
“We know our players will learn a great deal from Sam and we look forward to having Sam, wife Lyndall and their children Smith, Emmerson and Scarlett back at Hawthorn.”
Mitchell, 36, served as captain of the Hawks from 2008-2010 and played in the club’s 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2015 premierships during 307 games in the brown and gold before playing a further 22 games for West Coast in 2017.
He was a joint winner of the Brownlow Medal in 2012 alongside Richmond’s Trent Cotchin and won five best-and-fairest awards at Hawthorn.
Mitchell joins Scott Burns, Darren Glass, Chris Newman and Adam Yze as the assistant coaches who will be working under Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn next year.
If you follow that formline, the Hawks — $ 2.35 outsiders with TAB — could be just the roughie for those trailing in tipping competitions as they attempt to reel in their rivals.
The fact that Hawthorn has not lost at the SCG since 2010 also augurs well for the true believers.

EXPECT the unexpected on Saturday night at the SCG.
The past five times modern-day rivals Hawthorn and Sydney have faced off, the match has been won by the underdog.
Following that formline, the Hawks — $ 2.35 outsiders with TAB — could be the roughie of the round for those still in contention in their footy tipping competitions.
Coupled with that is the fact that Hawthorn hasn’t lost at the SCG since 2010, winning its past four matches there, including three as the underdog.
The past four matches between these two teams have been won by single-figure margins, so the $ 2.40 for either team to salute by less than 15.5 points looks attractive.
In their Round 8 clash earlier this season, the Hawks were single-handedly beaten by rookie Swans forward Ben Ronke, who put in one of the more remarkable games in AFL history.
Playing just the third game of his career, Ronke, 20, who was selected at No. 17 in the 2016
rookie draft, became the first player in AFL history to kick seven goals and have 10 tackles in the same game.

ADELAIDE OVAL, FRIDAY 7.50PM
IF you believe in history repeating, Essendon is the team to beat tomorrow night despite going in as the outsider.
This season, no team has lost more when favoured than Port Adelaide, which has lost seven matches it was backed to win.
And no team has caused more upsets than the Bombers, winning five as the underdog.
Port Adelaide needs to win to get in the top eight and put some pressure on Geelong ahead of its match against Gold Coast, while Essendon’s focus has turned to Mad Monday after losing to Richmond last Friday night.
A shining light for the Bombers in what has been a disappointing season is Devon Smith.
The former Giant is the league’s premier tackler this year, averaging 8.3 tackles a game and totalling 23 more than any other player.

MELBOURNE ($ 1.42) V GWS ($ 2.85)
MCG, SUNDAY, 3.20PM
THIS is a match the old Melbourne would have lost. During the past decade, the Demons have had the worst winning percentage when they have been favourite.
Melbourne has won just 58 per cent of games it has been expected to win, ahead of the Brisbane Lions at 59 per cent and, surprisingly, Port Adelaide at 60 per cent.
But this is the new Melbourne — a team that has qualified for finals for the first time since 2006.
The Demons are $ 11 with the TAB to win the premiership after being as high as $ 34 after Round 5.
Their march to September has been led by ruckman Max Gawn, who has compiled one of the all-time great seasons from a big man.
The 208cm cult figure is the $ 9 equal second favourite to win the Brownlow Medal with Carlton’s Patrick Cripps, behind Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell at $ 1.35 favourite.
Gawn needs just another 37 hit-outs to be the second player, after North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein in 2015, to amass 1000 hit-outs in a season.

If being dismantled 38-13 last weekend at ANZ Stadium wasn’t bad enough for the Wallabies, the Australians must snap a 32-year hoodoo to keep the series alive at Auckland’s Eden Park cauldron.
Not surprisingly, the All Blacks have attracted a whopping 96 per cent of the money wagered with TAB, despite the short quote.
The Wallabies will be without poster boy and fullback Israel Folau (ankle) for the must-win game. Folau’s absence opens the door for young guns Jack Maddocks and Tom Banks to step in, with veteran Kurtley Beale also in the mix.

WEST Coast Fever ($ 1.65) will start favourite in the Super Netball Grand Final ahead of fast-finishing reigning champions Sunshine Coast Lightning ($ 2.15).

Lightning and Diamonds spearhead Caitlin Bassett bagged 40 goals while captain and England international Geva Mentor and Karla Pretorius blunted the Giants at every opportunity.
It caps a stunning turnaround by Lightning, which languished second last after four rounds.
As good as West Coast has been this season, Lightning poses a significant threat, having maintained an unbeaten 4-0 record in Super Netball finals in the past two seasons.
Fever, which will host the decider in front of more than 10,000 fans at Perth Arena, has lost only once at home this season.
It defeated Sunshine Coast twice during the season — both one-goal thrillers.
West Coast star Jhaniele Fowler is expected to play after recovering from a knee injury.

The fate of the Republican tax overhaul is coming down to a confrontation between the Senate’s few remaining deficit hawks and the GOP’s most ardent tax-slashers.
It’s a fight that has been building for months and now centers on a proposal from Senators Bob Corker of Tennessee and James Lankford of Oklahoma for the Republican tax bill to include a provision triggering tax increases if the cuts in the rate for corporations don’t produce promised economic growth. Corker, who has vowed not to support a bill that he viewed as adding to the deficit, provided a decisive vote to advance the $ 1.4 trillion tax cut out of the Budget Committee on Tuesday only after securing what he said was a “verbal agreement” from GOP leaders that the final legislation would include a fiscal trigger. On Wednesday, all 52 Senate Republicans voted to begin floor debate on the tax bill, which the party hopes to pass by the end of the week. But important changes, including the expected addition of a trigger provision, are still to come, and the GOP’s show of unity in Wednesday’s procedural vote does not necessarily mean final passage will go as smoothly.
With the bill gaining steam, conservative lawmakers and outside activists are now mobilizing in opposition to a fiscal trigger. They warn it’ll prove counterproductive to the GOP’s goal of unleashing business investment and could saddle the nation with an automatic tax hike if the economy takes an unexpected dip. “It’s a bad idea,” said Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, the advocacy group funded by the Koch brothers. “The last thing you’d want to do if there were some kind of economic downturn would be to raise taxes. It also leads to uncertainty for businesses, because you don’t know what your tax rates are going to be from year to year.” In an interview, Andy Roth of the conservative Club for Growth called the proposal “a dumb idea,” and Grover Norquist, the veteran anti-tax activist, slammed it as “a self-fulfilling threat to kill jobs.”
In a sign of just how sensitive the topic has become for Republicans, neither Corker nor Lankford has publicly detailed how their proposal would work—despite the fact that Senate leaders plan to amend and pass their far-reaching bill as early as Thursday. And while conservatives are trying to ensure a trigger stays out of the measure, they aren’t yet threatening to abandon legislation Republicans desperately want to enact. During a meeting of House Republicans on Wednesday morning, according to a senior GOP aide, party leaders urged rank-and-file members not to criticize the emerging Senate bill until after it passes the upper chamber. In exchange, House members were assured they’d have the opportunity to fight for changes in a conference committee to reconcile the two bodies’ competing bills.
Conservative lawmakers in both chambers are instead pushing for a mechanism that would trigger automatic spending cuts rather than tax increases, although that might be even harder to pass through the Senate. And the Senate bill would already set off cuts to Medicare that Congress may quickly try to undo.
Trying to head off a conservative revolt, Lankford has been talking for weeks about a possible trigger with his former colleagues in the House, where he served for four years before moving to the Senate. The Senate plan, like a House bill approved earlier this month, would reduce the corporate tax rate to 20 percent from 35 percent. Under one proposal floated by Lankford, that rate would rise to 21 percent after five years if the economy doesn’t grow at a fast enough clip.
Some GOP senators are uneasy with even that modest change. “Personally, I don’t support triggers,” Nevada’s Dean Heller said at a Wednesday press conference. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina argued that the mere threat of a future tax increase would discourage businesses from taking advantage of the lower taxes to begin with. “The perverse consequence of having a trigger in here could potentially be that we won’t achieve the economic gains that we would otherwise have if the trigger were not,” he said.
For now, the trigger debate isn’t a deal breaker for many Republican senators, who don’t want to jeopardize the broader tax bill over a provision that might not survive the legislative process. Republicans can’t lose more than two of their members and pass the bill. Corker and Lankford have each drawn a hard line on the issue to this point, and Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain of Arizona have voiced similar concerns about the bill. “I don’t want to see this bill destroyed because of a pursuit for perfection,” Senator David Perdue of Georgia said.
The trigger mechanism could run afoul of the Senate’s budget rules, analysts have said, causing the provision to be stripped out before a final vote. Or it could be watered down in negotiations with the House to a point where conservatives don’t see it as an actual threat to their tax cuts. The decision would then swing back to the deficit hawks, who would face tremendous pressure not to topple a landmark Republican bill at the very last moment.
Corker and Lankford have received little support from advocates of fiscal restraint outside of Congress—not to mention Democrats, who already see their proposal as one more “gimmick” in a bill loaded with them. To comply with Senate budget limits, Republicans set most of the tax cuts for individuals to expire even as they promised to extend them later on. “Instead of designing a backstop in case a policy fails, lawmakers should just pass tax legislation that’s fiscally responsible and permanent in the first place,” said Michael Peterson, president of the Peter Peterson Foundation. “They can do that by using reasonable assumptions for economic growth and being realistic about the effects on the budget.”
Given the GOP’s slim Senate majority, Corker, Lankford, Flake, and McCain could use their votes as leverage to demand a trigger in the final bill. But unless and until they do, conservatives have the edge.

Cuckoos are nest parasites. That means they lay eggs in the nests of other birds, which then put the effort into raising the chicks. So you’d think they’d be quiet about it. Yet female cuckoos have a tendency to make a bubbly, chuckling call while they’re laying their eggs. That’s a strange thing for them to do, because host birds aren’t too fond of cuckoos.
That chuckle doesn’t sound at all like the male cuckoo call. But it does have similarities to the call of the sparrowhawk, which led researchers Jenny York and Nicholas Davies to wonder whether the call might be a purposeful deceit—a ruse to distract the hapless host birds while their nest is being violated. York and Davies’ paper in Nature Ecology & Evolution this week provides evidence that the cuckoo chuckle does indeed seem to distract host birds by making them fear a sparrowhawk attack.
Plenty of species have evolved to mimic predators, often for their own protection. For instance, the wasp beetle mimics a stinging wasp, causing predators to steer away. Cuckoos seem to be a fan of that tactic: some cuckoo species look quite a bit like hawks, and this seems to protect them from mobbing by other birds.
Has the female common cuckoo evolved a cry that imitates a hawk? Both the cuckoo chuckle and the sparrowhawk cry consist of a rapid series of notes with a similar pitch and a similar rhythm. They sound different to a human ear. But, write York and Davies, “manipulation by imperfect mimicry is frequent in the natural world, and resemblance to hawk calls in some key features might be sufficient to trick hosts.” The way to find out is to determine whether the call seems to be effective in freaking out the host birds.
Host birds like reed warblers are wise to the possibility of cuckoo parasitism. They mob adult cuckoos and sometimes reject host eggs in their nests by kicking them out or abandoning the nests altogether. They also “monitor cuckoo activity in the vicinity of their nest and vary these defenses in relation to local parasitism risk,” write York and Davies. Because of this, female cuckoos are quick and stealthy when they lay their eggs—aside from the chuckle call.
York and Davies conducted three studies to compare the effects of the chuckle call and the sparrowhawk call. They filmed reed warblers in their nests and used speakers placed near the nests to play a series of different bird calls: the male cuckoo’s characteristic cuckoo-clock-like call, the female’s chuckle call, the sparrowhawk cry, and (as a control) the call of the extremely unthreatening collared dove. The birds didn’t react to male cuckoo calls or dove calls, but they adopted a vigilant response to hawk calls and the female cuckoo’s chuckle: they began looking around their nests for threats.
But warblers are a target species for cuckoos, so maybe they respond to both as a threat even if they can tell the difference between them. To test this, York and Davies conducted a similar experiment with birds that are prey for the sparrowhawk but not targeted by cuckoos: the great tit and blue tit. The birds reacted vigilantly to both the chuckle call and sparrowhawk call, but not to the dove or male cuckoo call.
It’s possible to explain the cuckoo’s mimicry in evolutionary terms if it buys them more reproductive success—if it increases the likelihood that eggs laid along with a fake hawk call go unnoticed by host birds, who are too busy worrying about being eaten to pay close attention to their nests. So, York and Davies tested whether reed warblers distracted by hawk or chuckle calls might lower their nest defenses.
The researchers faked a foreign, parasitic egg in 75 different reed warbler nests by taking one egg out, painting it brown, and putting it back. Then they played one of the four calls near each nest. The majority of the foreign eggs—66 percent—were rejected in nests that heard male cuckoo or dove calls, but only 26 percent of the eggs in the hawk and chuckle call nests were rejected. That suggests that the chuckle call helps to distract the reed warblers long enough for a foreign egg to go unnoticed.
The results are a nifty example of an evolutionary arms race: cuckoos that have their eggs accepted by the hosts have more babies and fare better in evolutionary terms; meanwhile, host birds that reject the cuckoo egg save their own young. So while host birds, over time, adapt to the cuckoo’s tricks, the cuckoo just adapts to become even trickier.

AFL: Brent Harvey joins Gameday Live and says he believes the Swans would win the grand final if it was played tomorrow.

Alastair Clarkson and John Longmire shake hands.
THE glory years might be over for Hawthorn, but Alastair Clarkson will be preparing his troops as if Friday night’s blockbuster against Sydney at the MCG is the 2017 Grand Final.
If there was any doubt over what being pitted against the Swans means for Clarkson, it was all laid bare back in Round 10, when his side silenced the SCG with a passion-fuelled win for the ages.
Hawthorn poured so much energy into that epic triumph that they could barely get out of the garage the next week against Port Adelaide, mustering an all-time low three points by half-time and ultimately slumping to a 51-point hammering.
BAROMETER: WHO’S HOT, WHO’S HURT AT YOUR CLUB
RISING STAR: YOUNG SWAN SET TO TAKE FLIGHT
THE TACKLE: HAS MIRACLE MAN CLARKO DONE IT AGAIN?
It was then that Clarkson conceded his team were no longer premiership contenders but perhaps the epic fall was worth it for the size of the scalp the week before.
There is so much history between Sydney and Hawthorn that some have even speculated whether the grand final battles and the Lance Franklin transfer have strained the longstanding friendship between former teammates Clarkson and Longmire.
The Swans coach flatly denies that’s the case, but he knows to be wary of Hawthorn.

Hawthorn captain Jarryd Roughead celebrates kicking the winning goal. Picture: Phil HillyardSource:News Corp Australia
Even if it’s only between the lines of battle, it would appear beating Sydney is personal for Clarkson.
If the once mighty force are to fall short of finals this year, thwarting the Swans fairytale march to September at the MCG would surely be a second prize to savour.
The MCG has been the Swans’ graveyard on so many occasions against Hawthorn, and after their season appeared all but ended by Clarkson back in Round 10, Longmire is on guard to make sure his old mate doesn’t bring down the curtains on him again.
“I’m not sure if there’s more (to it), you’d have to ask him I guess,” Longmire said of Clarkson.
“From our perspective we’ve got enormous respect for each other.
“He’s a good friend of mine. I sent him a message last week for his 300th. It’s a fantastic achievement what he’s been able to do with that footy club.
“He and Caryn are good friends of ours.
“He’s a quality coach what he’s been able to do for a long time. I know him really well and you enjoy competing against each other.

Alastair Clarkson and John Longmire shake hands.Source:News Limited
“We’ve competed against each other as coaches in some of the biggest games. But I’m sure he’s like I am, which is, it’s not so much about us, it’s more about the players and the clubs and having a healthy respect for each other.
“That’s where we end up sitting both of us in regards to our footy clubs.”
On only two occasions since 2012 have Sydney knocked over Hawthorn at the MCG.
The Swans are flying, but Longmire says Hawthorn are the ideal leveller.
The most feared opponent, even in a down year.
“I’m always wary of the Hawks. I’ve got enormous respect for what they’ve been able to do for a long time let alone this year,” said Longmire.
“They’ve changed their team up, they’ve beaten Adelaide, they were a kick off beating Geelong, they’ve beaten Fremantle in Perth by nearly 10 goals so they’re in a really significant form patch at the moment.
“I’ve got the greatest respect for the Hawthorn footy club, and we know our work is cut out for us on their home deck this week.”
Longmire said Kurt Tippett is a chance to return to the AFL this week but not at the expense of Callum Sinclair who was outstanding in last week’s win over St Kilda.
