It’s been several months since the late Stephen Hawking passed away, but posthumous writings by the groundbreaking scientist show the great man still had much more to tell us.
Just days after Hawking’s final academic paper was published online, the world-famous physicist is back in the spotlight for a different reason: a stark, controversial prediction of a future that threatens the end of the human race as we know it.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

]]>
Stephen Hawking died peacefully in his Cambridge home on March 14 this year, and tomorrow, on March 31, his funeral will take place at Great St Mary’s, the University Church in Cambridge.
The church is very close to Gonville & Caius, the Cambridge College, Professor Hawking’s academic home for more than 52 years.
Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 22. He was given just a few years to live after this diagnosis, but lived with the condition for a further 54 years.
But, what is motor neurone disease, and what are the signs and symptoms?
Motor neurone disease is a rare condition that affects the brain and nerves, according to the NHS.
It causes a gradual weakness of muscles that gets worse over time.
Patients have a significantly shortened life expectancy and there’s no cure for the condition, it added.
Most people diagnosed with motor neurone disease are in their 60s and 70s, although it can affect people of all ages.
“Symptoms of motor neurone disease come on gradually and may not be obvious at first,” said the NHS.
“Early symptoms can include weakness in your ankle or leg – you might trip, or find it harder to climb stairs – and slurred speech, which may develop into difficulty swallowing some foods.”
Having a weak grip could also be a sign of motor neurone disease. Patients may drop things, or find it harder to open jars or do up buttons.
Other signs and symptoms include muscle cramps, weight loss, and difficulty stopping yourself from crying or laughing in inappropriate situations.
You should see a GP if you think you have early symptoms of motor neurone disease.
If a close relative has the condition, and you think you may be at risk of the condition, it’s best to see a doctor.
“It’s unlikely you have motor neurone disease, but getting a correct diagnosis as early as possible can help you get the care and support you need,” the NHS said.
About two people in every 100,000 will develop motor neurone disease. Every day, six people are diagnosed with the life-long condition.
The funeral taking place on Saturday will be a private occasion with just family and friends at the service.
His ashes will then be scattered at Westminster Abbey in London.
Hawking was known for this work in the scientific field and his discoveries over the years and renowned as one of the greatest scientists of all time.
STEPHEN HAWKING died at the age of 76 earlier this month and his funeral is due to take place tomorrow. The physicist lived for more than 50 years with motor neurone disease, a rare condition that affects the brain and nerves. What are the symptoms?![]()
While appearing on The Chris Ramsey show, former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Rachel Riley announced that she gave Strictly fan Stephen Hawking a private show.
Host Chris posed the secret tale as a question as to just who Rachel had performed a dance to Nelly Furtado’s Maneater for.
Chris said: “Rachel and her boyfriend Pasha, from Strictly Come Dancing, once performed a private dance for which national hero?
“Was it David Beckham, Stephen Hawking or Prince Harry?”
He quickly revealed that is was in fact Stephen, after fellow show guests assumed that the answer would be former footballer David.
Rachel, 32, then giggled and explained how it was the “weirdest day ever”.
She said: “It was Stephen Hawking. Yeah it was. A complete legend. Weirdest day ever.
“I was filming The Gadget Show, so in the morning Ainsley Harriott cooked me three Christmas dinners in October.
“Then Jimmy Carr messaged and said he was going out with Stephen Hawking and his family and friends who are good mates. He loves his comedy!
“His carers and family are big Strictly fans and obviously I was on Strictly at the time. So I hot footed it down from Birmingham and I was mid-training so took Pasha with me.”
Rachel then told how it was Jimmy who gave her the push to perform for the late physicist.
She continued: “You know what Jimmy is like, he said, ‘Go on, give us a show’.
“It was kind of day two of learning it and it was really hard anyway but I barely knew anything.
“So he put the music on and I went to do the dance and like three beats in I accidentally head butted Pasha.
“We have it on video somewhere of me just head butting him in front of Stephen Hawking and all his friends and family. Everyone just p***ing themselves laughing.”
Shocked, Chris then teased: “I’m going to get my pen and change this to which star did Jimmy Carr pimp you out to.”
It comes after Westminster Abbey announced that Stephen’s ashes will be buried there near the grave of Sir Isaac Newton during a thanksgiving service later this year.
The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, said: “It is entirely fitting that the remains of Professor Stephen Hawking are to be buried in the Abbey, near those of distinguished fellow scientists.”
The Chris Ramsey show airs Wednesdays at 10pm on Comedy Central.

Stephen Hawking died early in the morning on March 14, 2018 — Pi Day and Albert Einstein’s birthday — but left behind one of the most incredible legacies for a human being on Earth.
Hawking was a theoretical physicist who pioneered new understandings of black holes and the cosmos at large. What’s more, he did so while struggling with a severe neurodegenerative disease that confined him to a wheelchair for the vast majority of his life.
The world-renowned scientist carefully contemplated and composed his thoughts with a special eye-tracking computer, and those words — many of them humorous — continue to inspire generations of people who were curious about how the universe works, where it came from, and where it may be headed.
Hawking supplied no shortage of remarkable insights about life, love, and science. Below, we’ve done our best to collect the most memorable things he said in his books, essays, interviews, TV show appearances, and more.

Today’s instalment of The One Show began by dedicating a segment to the death of Professor Stephen Hawking, who died this morning at the age of 76.
However, one guest told a story about Stephen which delighted the hosts of the programme.
BBC Science Correspondent Pallab Ghosh appeared on the show to comment on his memories of the physicist, when he made a surprise revelation.
Pallab said: “He played a huge joke on me that very first time I met him, in that we were filming an interview with him and the cameraman wanted to change the lighting.
“He [the cameraman] asked, ‘Is it alright if I unplug this?’, and without waiting for an answer he did, and all these sirens went off and I thought, ‘Oh my god we’ve unplugged something crucial to Professor Hawking’s well being’ and he slumped over.
“Then it turned out he was just laughing at our incompetence.”
Presenters Matt Baker and Michelle Ackerley then burst into laughter over the story.
Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber also appeared as a guest on today’s instalment of the programme where he revealed he too had met Stephen.
“I did meet him a couple of times, mainly at parties,” he said. “He had a very wide taste in classical music.”
He jokingly added: “But I’m one of these people who can’t understand the concept on infinity, therefore, I’m hopeless when it comes to understanding anything he was talking about.”
However, despite the knowledge gap between them, Sir Andrew said he was “very engaging”.
The exact cause of Professor Hawking’s death remains unknown, but he suffered from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a neurodegenerative disease commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
In a statement released in the early hours of this morning, Professor Hawking’s children, Lucy, Robert and Tim said: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.
“He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.
“His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.
“He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.'”
The One Show continues tomorrow at 7pm on BBC One.
The world has lost one of its greatest minds.
Stephen Hawking, the renowned theoretical physicist who helped shape current thought on cosmology and the infinite possibilities of the universe, has died. He was 76.
Hawking died in his home in Cambridge, U.K., early Wednesday morning, his family confirmed in a statement (via New York Times).
In a statement his family said:
“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”
Hawking was best known for his acclaimed 1988 cosmology book A Brief History of Time, which pondered the origin and fate of the universe as well as theories about space and time travel. A Brief History of Time stayed on the Sunday Times of London’s best-sellers list for an unprecedented 237 weeks, selling 10 million copies worldwide. It helped launch him to fame as one of the foremost scientists of our times.
Born in 1942 in Oxford, England, the brilliant physicist was diagnosed with ALS, a neurodegenerative disease, in 1963. Doctors at the time gave him a life expectancy of only two years, but Hawking would go on to live for 55 more years.
The disease slowly paralyzed his body and motor functions. But the advent of a motorized wheelchair and synthesized computer vocalizations in the 1980s allowed Hawking to communicate, and his image became synonymous with the tools he employed.
Hawking’s unique and inspirational struggle against ALS as well as his groundbreaking theories were depicted in the award-winning 2014 biopic The Theory of Everything. Eddie Redmayne won an Oscar for his portrayal of Hawking in the feature film based off the memoir by Hawking’s first wife, Jane Hawking. Benedict Cumberbatch also won a BAFTA for playing the scientist in the BBC TV film Hawking.
But those adaptations were not the only lasting influence that Hawking left behind on pop culture.
Though often seen as a serious scientist, Hawking had a mischievous side and an ardent love for pop culture. Most importantly, he wasn’t afraid to poke fun at himself. Here are a few of Hawking’s best (and silliest) pop culture cameos.
“The Simpsons is the best thing on American television,” the late astrophysicist said on BBC’s The Culture Show after his cameo on the hit animated series in 1999.
Hawking appeared in the episode “They Saved Lisa’s Brain” in 1999, saving Springfield from its crumbling utopian meritocracy. His appearance was so memorable that many people thought he was a character invented for the show. Hawking would go on to make three more appearances in The Simpsons, including an cameo where he trades barbs with the Flight of the Conchords stars. He also made several cameos on Futurama.
Hawking played himself in a 1993 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where he played a poker game with Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton and Data. When Newton asks Data what the point of the game was, Data responds, “I was curious to see how three of history’s greatest minds would interact in this setting.”
Pink Floyd sampled Hawking’s voice in a track from the band’s 1994 album, “The Division Bell.” The sample was taken from a 1993 TV commercial for British telephone company BT. Pink Floyd would use another clip of Hawking’s unique synthesized voice in the 2014 track “Talkin’ Hawkin’” on their final studio album “The Endless River.”
Hawking played himself in the geeky sitcom in 2012, where he meets Jim Parsons’ character Sheldon, a longtime fan.In the episode, “The Hawking Excitation,” Mr. Hawking gives Sheldon feedback on a paper on the Higgs boson, telling him, “You made an arithmetic mistake on page two. It was quite the boner.”
One of Hawking’s most beloved comedic appearances was his sit-down with British comedy host John Oliver on his “People Who Think Good” segment. The bit features Hawking tearing into Oliver, after the host asks, “You’ve stated there could be an infinite number of parallel universes. Does that mean that there is a universe out there where I am smarter than you?”
“Yes,” Hawking shot back. “And also a universe where you’re funny.”
A brief, nearly-forgotten cameo took place in the 2014 Monty Python reunion show, “Monty Python Live (mostly) – One Down Five to Go.” Hawking is enlisted to contribute to the “Galaxy Song” sketch, but the best part of the sketch is when he nearly runs down fellow physicist Brian Cox.
