A man who suffered a heart attack following the false ballistic missile alert sent by a government agency to the cell phones of every Hawaii resident, is now suing the state for undisclosed damages.

James Sean Shields suffered a heart attack on January 13th 2018, the same day the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HEMA) triggered widespread panic by issuing a statewide alert to broadcasters and citizens, warning them of an oncoming ballistic missile attack.

The agency sent a follow-up notification 38 minutes later telling people it was a false alarm. An FCC investigation revealed that a now-fired HEMA employee sent the warning through the Emergency Alert System after mistaking an exercise for a real scenario. To make matters worse the false alarm happened during a time of heightened tensions between the US and North Korea.

The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday against the state of Hawaii and the then-administrator of HEMA, Vern Miyagi, claims the state failed to cancel the warning in a timely manner, causing substantial stress to Shields and causing his heart attack.

“The warning there was an imminent missile attack about to hit Hawaii was a substantial contributing factor in causing the heart attack,” said cardiologist John MacGregor, a professor of medicine at San Francisco School of Medicine and a doctor at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, in the lawsuit.

“Prior to that time, Mr. Shields had no known cardiac disease,” MacGregor added.

The lawsuit is joined by Shields’ girlfriend Brenda Reiche who said she suffered “emotional upset” from watching him almost die as a result of the false alarm. The couple say they were on their way to the beach on that Saturday morning when they got the alarm.

“Both plaintiffs believe this message to be true and were extremely frightened and thought they were shortly going to die,” the lawsuit reads according to AP. Shields said after he called his son and daughter about the warning he began to feel a painful burning in his chest.

Shortly after, Shields visited a community center clinic and went into cardiac arrest. A doctor resuscitated him and he was transported to Straub Hospital where he was diagnosed with having had a heart attack.

Shields and his girlfriend are asking for unspecified damages. A spokesman for HEMA said they were going to “reserve any comment until we have had a chance to review the claims.”

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano exploded Thursday morning, sending an ash plume thousands of feet into the sky.

The eruption occurred shortly after 4 a.m. local time, Hawaii’s Civil Defense Agency said. The eruption shot ash more than 30,000 feet up. Authorities evacuated people from around Kilauea’s crater area and warned those in the vicinity of the volcano to take shelter.

Earlier this week, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) issued a rare “red alert” warning, which meant that a major eruption was imminent and that the ash clouds emitted from the volcano could affect air traffic. Those warnings have since come to fruition.

The volcanic eruptions on Hawaii’s Big Island have been escalating for about two weeks, causing severe damage to residential neighborhoods surrounding the Kilauea volcano. Over 1,000 people have evacuated.

The USGS warned on Twitter Thursday morning that “vog” — a form of air pollution caused by volcanic eruptions —will be severe following the explosion. The volcano is expected to continue belching noxious fumes like sulfur dioxide, which can make breathing difficult for children and the elderly.

DigitalGlobe, a technology firm that operates a network of private satellites, provided Business Insider with a series of satellite images showing the damage from the eruptions. Below, photos of the affected neighborhoods from 2017 are juxtaposed with images of the same area taken earlier this week, before the most recent explosion (which means damage is likely even worse now).

Here are the before-after-photos of the damage:

The Leilani Estates neighborhood in Kilauea’s East Rift Zone has sustained the worst damage from the eruption. The area is pictured here on May 24 of last year.

In Leilani Estates and surrounding neighborhoods today, lava is spewing from at least 20 fissures, or cracks in the ground. It has burned houses, vehicles, and infrastructure.

Like much of Hawaii’s Big Island, the Leilani Estates neighborhood was formerly lush and verdant.

Recent events in Hawaii have been producing some remarkable images. But if you’re not a geologist—or resident of Hawaii—you might be wondering what the heck is going on. We’re here to help: while lava spewing from back yards in a subdivision seems wild, it’s not really surprising.

Why is Kīlauea an active volcano in the first place?

The Hawaiian chain of islands (there are also seamounts that no longer reach above sea level) is the result of a “hotspot” in the Earth’s mantle. Hotspots in the Earth’s interior are areas of rising hot rock that can turn to liquid hot magma near the Earth’s surface. These hotspots are basically stationary, while tectonic plates slowly slide around on the surface. That means a hotspot will punch a line of eruptions through the plate a bit like a sewing machine.

The Big Island of Hawaii is the youngest in the chain, still straddling the hotspot that fuels its volcanoes—there are five individual volcanoes that make up the island. Of those five, Kīlauea is the youngest, comprising the southeastern edge of the island. Kīlauea’s summit is home to a collapsed crater called Halemaʻumaʻu Crater. In 2008, a new vent appeared in the floor of the crater, which has hosted a lake of roiling lava ever since.

  • 91-year-old multimillionaire heiress Abigail Kawananakoa, a descendant of Hawaiian royalty, is considered by many to be Hawaii’s last princess.
  • Now a court battle is playing out for her $ 215 million fortune, which she has used to fund various charities.
  • Kawananakoa’s longtime attorney successfully petitioned to become her trustee last year after arguing that she’d been left impaired by a stroke.
  • But Kawananakoa’s new lawyers are arguing that she is healthy.

HONOLULU (AP) — Every day, tourists flock to a downtown Honolulu palace for a glimpse of the way Hawaii’s royal family lived, marveling at its gilded furniture, lavish throne room and grand staircase made from prized koa wood.

But few know Iolani Palace — America’s only royal residence — has relied in part on the generosity of a descendant of that family while the relic of the monarchy’s rule now serves as a museum.

  • Hawaii Gov. David Ige reportedly said he couldn’t notify the public during the 38-minute false missile alarm  because he forgot his Twitter password.
  • The missile notification system was accidentally triggered last week after an employee mistakenly pushed the wrong button.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige said the panic that ensued during a false alarm warning of an imminent missile attack wasn’t addressed sooner because he forgot his Twitter password and couldn’t notify the public.

During a press conference on Monday, Ige took some of the blame the mix-up that caused panic throughout Hawaii and made headlines worldwide, according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser.

The missile defense notification system was accidentally triggered on January 13 after an employee mistakenly pushed the wrong button and sent mobile notifications to all in the vicinity, warning them of an imminent ballistic missile attack.

The blunder caused mass panic around Hawaii, as people quickly took cover and prepared for impact.

A second alert clarifying that there was no missile threat to Hawaii was not sent out until 38 minutes after the initial notice.

Soon after, officials confirmed that the alert was a mistake.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency tweeted, “NO missile threat to Hawaii.”

Ige responded to the incident at the time, saying the triggering of the alert system was an “error” and was being investigated to avoid the incident from “ever happening again.”

Hawaii began testing its nuclear warning system in December, CNN reported. It is the first time since the Cold War that Hawaii brought back the system and comes amid North Korea’s increased missile testing.

By now, most people have heard about the erroneous incoming ICBM alert in Hawaii. There’s been scrutiny of the how the emergency alert system works and of how international tensions and the flight times of missiles can lead to accidental nuclear war. I’d like to focus instead on how the systems design in Hawaii led to this problem—a design that I suspect is replicated in many other states.

One possible factor, of course, is hurried design:

Hawaii’s Kona Coffee Farmers Fight Back https://briefnews.eu/hawaiis-kona-coffee-farmers-fight-back/ https://briefnews.eu/hawaiis-kona-coffee-farmers-fight-back/#respond Sat, 04 Mar 2017 19:40:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hawaiis-kona-coffee-farmers-fight-back/ The west side of Hawaii’s Big Island boasts ritzy five-star resorts, some of this state’s most beautiful beaches and turquoise waters that lap the soft sugar sand of Hapuna Beach Park. All the while, you’ll find copious amounts of coffee — although increasingly these days, there’s a foreign flavor mixing in with what used to be just a popular local crop.

Despite being America’s last arrival to statehood, Hawaii is no stranger to powerful private interests steering public policy — or local consumption habits. It’s a group of islands where you’ll find mom-and-pop shops next to major corporations, much like other landlocked regions, though there’s something different about a recent conflict among small Kona coffee farmers and their larger competition. Unlike places such as Cameroon and Colombia, where farmers lambast their leaders over economic policies they say are crippling them in a global market often led by Brazil, Indonesia and Vietnam, the small Kona coffee growers aren’t asking for subsidies or infrastructure. They just want to level the local playing field, they say.

If the consumers don’t like the type of labeling or the product itself, they’ll stop purchasing it.

Rep. Clift Tsuji, a Democrat for Hilo-Waiakea

Here, 1-pound bags with the Kona coffee label vary wildly in price — from as little as around $ 5 for the mass-produced blends made possible with cheap land and labor in developing countries, up to $ 40 for the pure beans and grounds grown on local property. The problem, according to the 250-plus small growers of the Kona Coffee Farmers Association, is that the big producers label their packaging almost the same way as the pure coffee producers, except for small print on the bag that says it’s a 10 percent blend. And this year could be the association’s best (and last) chance to have a state law revised that would require these blends to include at least 51 percent Kona coffee — and disclose where the rest of the product comes from. “The danger is, these blends are going to drive Kona coffee to extinction,” says Bruce Corker, the association president who owns a 4-acre farm of his own.

It’s enough of a challenge to make money from coffee when countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam hold an advantage, thanks to a relative low cost of land — less than $ 3,000 an acre in some places, compared to the $ 40,000 per acre it can cost for farmland in Hawaii. Labor can run 80 percent less in Southeast Asia as well, the reason even Colombian coffee farmers have gone on strike several times in the last few years while they demanded better subsidies.

Going up against the big guys in Hawaii is another battle. In the past, major sellers never used to have to label their bags with the fraction of their product that was made up of Kona coffee. Smaller growers lobbied fiercely for a 51 percent minimum, and while a new law passed in the early 1990s, it required only 10 percent Kona coffee in the blends. (Hawaii Coffee Company, one of the big coffee producers, declined to comment on the law.)

Recently, Rep. Clift Tsuji, a Democrat for Hilo-Waiakea, had the power to spark change through a bill that would have addressed this issue. Yet he says he let it die in the House Committee on Agriculture, which he chairs, because the group was running out of time but also because of faith in the free market system. Tsuji notes small farmers and big producers can come to a compromise on their own: “If the consumers don’t like the type of labeling or the product itself, they’ll stop purchasing it,” he tells OZY.

The Kona association prepared to address concerns during the latest legislative session in a number of ways, including less-than-subtle tactics, such as pooling funds together to pay for a study that suggests big producers have an unfair advantage by using almost the same labeling as their smaller competitors. But Corker also believes the law might help his group’s cause. The Harvard-educated labor litigator, who worked at Perkins Coie of Seattle for more than 25 years, has examined court rulings that might apply to this particular case. One rare spot of positive precedence: Less than two years ago a California judge ruled that Coca-Cola (which wouldn’t comment here) could no longer use Pomegranate Blueberry in its labeling of a juice with only 0.3 percent pomegranate juice — because it allegedly misled consumers and hurt POM Wonderful, which produces the real juice.

While the association waits to find out if it can take its case to court, it has had mixed results on its grassroots efforts to raise awareness about this issue. One protest several years ago in front of a Kona grocery chain led to TV news coverage and a label on the store shelves alerting customers to which coffees were a blend and which were fully Kona-grown. But it wasn’t enough to start a statewide movement with other stores and resorts.

Still, today, Corker has a more pressing issue to deal with — a pest on his farm, Rancho Aloha. It was only about six years ago when a certain coffee bean–eating beetle arrived to this area, killing up to a quarter of some farmers’ crops. After Corker breaks open one of the few beans left from last season’s harvest, to show the beetle and the damage it’s done to the inner fruit, he tosses the damaged cherry and returns to the house. It’s an uphill trek, at around 45 degrees, and brings us roughly a hundred feet higher than where we were just standing a few moments earlier. That’s the thing about this area: It takes a bit of effort to get to the top.

Man dies after breaching security at Hawaii’s Honolulu Airport https://briefnews.eu/man-dies-after-breaching-security-at-hawaiis-honolulu-airport/ https://briefnews.eu/man-dies-after-breaching-security-at-hawaiis-honolulu-airport/#respond Mon, 20 Feb 2017 18:44:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-dies-after-breaching-security-at-hawaiis-honolulu-airport/

The man, in his 40s, forced his way through a security checkpoint at the commuter terminal at the weekend.

He broke through a secure door into a restricted area where passengers were waiting to board.

Recently identified as Charles Kosi Jr, the man managed to make it outside before he was detained.

Kosi Jr was involved in a struggle with police, before he became unresponsive.

Emergency crews performed CPR and Kosi Jr was then taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesman Tim Sakahara said: “He did manage to force his way into the secured area, but seconds later he was apprehended and taken into custody.”

A security officer suffered head injuries as a result of the scuffle – he was taken to hospital for treatment.

Passengers were terrified as the commotion unfolded with Kosi Jr, who was not carrying a flight ticket.

One of the passengers who witnessed the ordeal, Mahealani Richardson said: “[It] was very scary as we heard a commotion, while we were waiting for our flight… We saw a crazed man literally try to ram himself through several doors at the terminal, trying to get outside to the runway.

“Passengers were very confused, including myself, so we ducked behind our seats to try to protect ourselves because we had no idea what was going on.”

Checkpoints were suspended temporarily in the wake of the incident but they resumed shortly afterwards.

No flights were delayed as a result of the tragic ordeal.

Fire crews, paramedics and police all attended the scene. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were also notified.

A full investigation has been launched by homicide detectives.

According to court documents, Kosi Jr had been in and out of prison over the last decade.

He was not armed at the time of the airport incident.

Last year a passenger sparked a security scare at Stansted Airport which turned out to be a false alarm.

The man was carrying a phone case in the shape of a gun in his back pocket.
