Russian military to ditch traditional headgear https://briefnews.eu/off-with-their-hats-russian-military-to-ditch-traditional-headgear/ https://briefnews.eu/off-with-their-hats-russian-military-to-ditch-traditional-headgear/#respond Thu, 04 Oct 2018 14:27:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/off-with-their-hats-russian-military-to-ditch-traditional-headgear/

A large part of Russian military will soon stop using traditional Russian fur hats with ear flaps, known as “ushankas,” as well as woolen side caps. The government plans to replace these items with more simple headgear.

The famous Russian souvenir known abroad as “ushanka”, “shapka” or simply “Russian hat” could soon become a rare curiosity and those who planned to get one should probably act quickly.

That’s because on Thursday the Russian government released new rules for uniform supplies to the military. Officers, generals and female military staff will no longer receive the flashy astrakhan fur hats with ear flaps or woolen side caps, according to the document. Instead they will simply be issued “fur hats”, the document reads.

Colonels, however, will still wear astrakhan “papakha” hats that look like fur buckets – the type worn by Omar Sharif in the 1965 version of the Doctor Zhivago movie.

Although women and men in the Russian military wear Long Johns all year round (thin cotton ones in summer and thicker wool blend ones in winter), female soldiers will now be issued with two pairs of panties per year.

Fur hats with ear flaps were very wide spread in Russia until the end of the 20th century. The Russian names for them are “ushanka” or “ear hat” and “treukh” or “three ears” for those that have flaps at the sides and at the back. In recent times the popularity of such hats has declined in European Russia, partially because of the availability of private cars and perhaps also due to the efforts of anti-fur activists from PETA and Greenpeace.

However, in colder areas, like Urals and Siberia ushankas still hold their popularity as the headgear item of choice.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Meghan Markle’s hats reveal she is ‘not as confident’ as Kate – duchess ‘needs finessing’ https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markles-hats-reveal-she-is-not-as-confident-as-kate-duchess-needs-finessing/ https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markles-hats-reveal-she-is-not-as-confident-as-kate-duchess-needs-finessing/#respond Thu, 21 Jun 2018 03:21:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meghan-markles-hats-reveal-she-is-not-as-confident-as-kate-duchess-needs-finessing/

Meghan Markle attended Royal Ascot 2018 and fans held their breath to see what the new Duchess of Sussex would wear.

The former-actress stunned in a white Givenchy gown, made by the same fashion house as her wedding dress.

Yesterday Meghan Markle at Ascot wore a monochrome look, adding a black and white Philip Treacey hat.

Hats are often on the sartorial menu for royal women as many traditional British events call for them, including weddings and the races.

What do Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s hats say about them?

And, how can you channel their regal style?

Surrey-based milliner Beverley Edmondson told Express.co.uk exclusively: “Meghan’s hat yesterday was very stylish and elegant. It’s always lovely to see the classic monochrome look for Ascot – think My Fair Lady.

“The hat had a little more detail – without being fussy – than we have seen in previous hats that she has worn, which softened the look on her and shows that there is a balance in the designs which can be reached between minimalistic and fussy.”

Kate Middleton, who is still technically on maternity leave, did not attend Ascot yesterday.

However, when comparing the two duchesses’ styles Beverley said: “Meghan hasn’t quite managed to nail down a style yet, she is not as confident in hats as Kate and has so far gone for simpler hats than Kate would go for.”

However, stylish Meghan is finding her feet when it comes to hats, the expert said.

She added: “I think she is trying to carve out a sleek minimal look but I think this still needs finessing, she hasn’t yet developed the sleek sophisticated and timeless yet feminine look that Kate has.

“I am looking forward to seeing her hats at Royal Ascot should Meghan be attending, it will be a really opportunity to cement her style and test the waters of designs.”

Royal Ascot this year has been a show of stunning fashion, as it is every year.

Royals often inspire trends at the race meet, Beverley said.

“Pastel colours will be key this year with Ascot inspiration coming from what the royals wear to the upcoming royal wedding,” Beverley said.

“Small but unusual shapes will be popular as well as shallow crowns and wide brims.

“The royals are hugely influential so I always watch what colours and shapes are being worn as I know my clients take their ideas from the royals.

“The royals always wear classic colours and styles but with a modern twist to keep it up to date and relevant.”

Princess Eugenie also looked stunning at Ascot as the princess gets ready for her wedding in a £2,052 Osman dress.

She may have been inspired by Meghan, as the Duchess of Sussex has been pictured in pale shades ever since her 19 May wedding to Prince Harry, 33.

‘Batgirl’ Movie: Female Writers Throw Their Hats Into the Ring https://briefnews.eu/batgirl-movie-female-writers-throw-their-hats-into-the-ring/ https://briefnews.eu/batgirl-movie-female-writers-throw-their-hats-into-the-ring/#respond Fri, 23 Feb 2018 21:56:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/batgirl-movie-female-writers-throw-their-hats-into-the-ring/ Batgirl writers

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s news that Joss Whedon is leaving Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ Batgirl movie, two acclaimed female writers are looking to fill the now-vacated writing slot. Roxane Gay and Hope Larson separately chimed in on Twitter that they’re ready to dive in and take over should DC come calling, and here’s the weird part: a DC executive actually responded to one of them. Learn more about the would-be Batgirl writers below.

Roxane Gay

Gay is a renowned author who has written well-regarded books (An Untamed State, Hunger) and collections of essays and short stories (Bad Feminist, Difficult Women). But perhaps her biggest piece of nerd cred is the fact that she was a lead writer for Marvel’s World of Wakanda, a Black Panther spin-off comic that earned praise for its treatment of women and the portrayal of LGBTQ characters (specifically Aneka and Ayo, members of the Dora Milaje).

After word came out yesterday about Whedon’s exit from Batgirl, Gay tweeted that she could write the movie without a problem:

That’s cool and everything, but it’s normally not enough for us to write an article about. What makes this different is the response Gay received.

That’s Michele Wells, a Warner Bros. executive who works on the DC film properties. Gay followed up by saying that she was indeed serious and would reach out to Wells via e-mail.

Writers taking to social media to talk about how they could tackle a huge entertainment project is nothing new, but it’s incredibly rare that a studio executive actually responds to one of those writers in public. But that positive public response to a black female writer may be indicative of DC’s approach to Batgirl. Whedon said he left because he couldn’t crack the story, but it may very well be a case of the studio not wanting a middle-aged white dude at the helm of one of a story about one of its most prominent female characters.

Hope Larson

But DC actually hiring Gay to write the script is far from being a real thing. If that doesn’t work out, maybe they could have a conversation with comic creator Hope Larson. She’s a two-time Eisner Award winner, most recently for her work on the graphic novel adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. In addition to a plethora of other work, Larson is the current writer of – wait for it – DC’s Batgirl comics.

I haven’t read any of her Batgirl comics, but our good friend Wikipedia says she crafted a run that saw the superhero (aka Barbara Gordon) “go on a backpacking trip through Asia on a voyage of self-discovery.” A quick glance at DC’s official site also reveals that a few of Larson’s Batgirl comics include crossover stories with Nightwing, another DC character who’s supposed to be getting his own movie. Maybe there’s potential for an on-screen crossover as well, seeing that these two frequently team up in the comics.

In any case, it’s downright bizarre that Warner Bros. finds itself in a position in which they’re essentially accepting blind pitches for major movies through social media. But if it results in a Batgirl movie that hails from a female writer who actually has a solid take on the character, it will all have been worth it.

Ryo Yamazaki loves his pet cats — three extremely photogenic Scottish Folds. Like most cat owners, Yamazaki brushes his feline companions with care. Instead of discarding the fur, he uses the excess hair to create tiny felted hats for his beloved cats and photographs them. Around 83.6k Instagram followers later, it’s pretty clear that Yamazaki’s funny photos of his mew-ses tolerating his antics are a sensation with cat-loving fans everywhere. Sip that coffee, hold all calls, and enjoy some cats wearing Princess Leia buns because you saw the new Star Wars during the holiday break and is your vacation really over, oh no.

Royal Ascot 2017 WORST dressed: Racegoers make style ERRORS in bold print and massive hats https://briefnews.eu/royal-ascot-2017-worst-dressed-racegoers-make-style-errors-in-bold-print-and-massive-hats/ https://briefnews.eu/royal-ascot-2017-worst-dressed-racegoers-make-style-errors-in-bold-print-and-massive-hats/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 11:35:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/royal-ascot-2017-worst-dressed-racegoers-make-style-errors-in-bold-print-and-massive-hats/

The dress code for Royal Ascot is known to be strict, and the organisers lay out the rules in detail on their website.

Guests in the Royal Enclosure face the most stringent rules, with dress and skirts asked to be “of modest length” falling just above the knee or longer.

Dresses and tops must have straps of one inch or greater, even if covered by a jacket or pashmina.

Hats are required, and they should have a base of four inches – so fascinators are banned.

Rules are more relaxed in the Queen Anne Enclosure and Village Enclosure, and there is no dress code at all in the Windsor Enclosure.

Ladies attending today have pushed the rules to their limit in an attempt to display their unusual style.

One couple dressed in matching tiger print outfits for a bold, shocking look sure to set tongues wagging.

Some ladies ran the fine line between good taste and bad without success, with eye-catching hats causing a stir for all the wrong reasons.

Oversized feathers in complementary colours, gigantic ruffled flowers and even a cut out horse all found their way onto the heads of attendees.

Prints were also popular this year, but without style success for some, as headache-inducing patterns were chosen by several ladies.

As well as a strict dress code, racegoers are facing tight security at the event this year after a spate of recent terror attacks.

Armed police will be patrolling the racecourse, and more extensive dog, bag and physical searches will be carried out this year in the wake of the terror attacks in London and Manchester.

Racegoers were warned that access to the course will take longer and to allow extra time.

Up to 300,000 people are due to descend on the Berkshire event over the next five days, including the Queen who has attended every year since she came to the throne in 1952.

Organisers advised punters via the Ascot website to expect tightened security, saying: “You will notice a stronger armed and uniformed police presence throughout the site and the vicinity.”

They urged people not to bring unnecessary bags or luggage, adding: “We also ask for your vigilance on matters of security. If you see or hear anything suspicious, please bring it immediately to the attention of the police or our stewards.”

Epsom Derby: Ladies Day fashion hits and MISSES as massive hats and acres of flesh on show https://briefnews.eu/epsom-derby-ladies-day-fashion-hits-and-misses-as-massive-hats-and-acres-of-flesh-on-show/ https://briefnews.eu/epsom-derby-ladies-day-fashion-hits-and-misses-as-massive-hats-and-acres-of-flesh-on-show/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2017 12:52:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/epsom-derby-ladies-day-fashion-hits-and-misses-as-massive-hats-and-acres-of-flesh-on-show/

The sun shone for the meet, allowing female attendees to put on their summery best and show their figures to the optimum advantage.

Oversized hats were a popular choice, with unusual shapes and styles, including one lady in a gold butterfly creation.

The rules at Epsom are not as strict as at Royal Ascot and so there was plenty of flesh on show.

From short shorts and low cut tops that revealed plenty of cleavage, Epsom racegoers were not shy.

Unlike Royal Ascot, bare shoulders are permitted, and many women took advantage of the looser rules.

Off-the-shoulder dresses were popular, as were strapless dresses and jumpsuits.

Many women chose to ditch their jackets and have thin spaghetti straps on show.

However not every woman wanted to flash the flesh, with plenty of women plumping for breezy maxi dresses.

Celebrities including Natalie Pinkham and Frankie Dettori have been spotted enjoying the races at Epsom already today.

The dress code for Epsom Derby states in the prestigious Queen’s Stand, men must wear top hats while women need to have a hat or ‘substantial fascinator’.

In the Grandstand, punters do not need to have hats on but they are asked to dress up for the race days.

Racegoers cannot wear sportswear, sports trainers or sleeveless vests.

The racecourse adds: “Smart denim must not be frayed, torn or ripped.”

The Daily Express and Sunday Express shared their horse racing tips for today.

They have named their principle tipster, who for the last 20 years has been acknowledged as one of the top private handicappers in England.

Virtual ‘top hats’ ensure swarming drones won’t crash https://briefnews.eu/virtual-top-hats-ensure-swarming-drones-wont-crash/ https://briefnews.eu/virtual-top-hats-ensure-swarming-drones-wont-crash/#respond Mon, 15 May 2017 20:21:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/virtual-top-hats-ensure-swarming-drones-wont-crash/

Drone swarms can be used for lots of things, like creating holograms, putting on a Superbowl halftime show or collecting military intelligence. One of the problems with a bunch of quadcopters executing maneuvers in close proximity, however, is that they can crash when they touch or fly under each other. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have found a way to avoid both issues by creating a virtual bumper area around each copter so that they don’t accidentally touch. They’ve also ensured that each copter has a little “top hat” of space above it so it won’t go underneath another drone and get caught up in its airflow.

Ph.D. student Li Wang figured out that the top hat must be as tall as five times the diameter from one rotor to another by flying drones atop one another. The 0.6-meter vertical space ensures the quadcopters avoid undercutting each other. A set of algorithms gives the drones the ability to quickly maneuver out of the way when they detect another robot next to or above them.

As drone swarms become more ubiquitous, they’ll need systems like these to keep people and themselves safe. “It’s not possible for one person to control dozens or hundreds of robots at a time. That’s why we need machines to figure it out themselves,” said Martin Egerstedt, director of Georgia Tech’s Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines.

Another team at the lab are finding ways for autonomous blimps to detect and react to human faces and hand gestures in a project to find better ways to get people interacting with drones. Slow-moving blimps are more approachable, according to the researchers, and may someday take the place of store greeters or information kiosks. “Imagine a blimp greeting you at the front of the hardware store, ready to offer assistance,” said project lead Fumin Zhang. “People are good at reading people’s faces and sensing if they need help or not. Robots could do the same. And if you needed help, the blimp could ask, then lead you to the correct aisle, flying above the crowds and out of the way.”

Destiny 2 release news: Bungie talk gameplay reveal as fans turn to hats for answers https://briefnews.eu/destiny-2-release-news-bungie-talk-gameplay-reveal-as-fans-turn-to-hats-for-answers/ https://briefnews.eu/destiny-2-release-news-bungie-talk-gameplay-reveal-as-fans-turn-to-hats-for-answers/#respond Fri, 12 May 2017 05:59:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/destiny-2-release-news-bungie-talk-gameplay-reveal-as-fans-turn-to-hats-for-answers/

Bungie have released their last blog post before the big Destiny 2 gameplay reveal scheduled to kick off next week.

Fans will learn a lot about the new shooter on May 18 and while the studio aren’t giving a lot away, there doing their best to hype the Destiny 2 release news as best they can.

Speaking on the impact they hope the new gameplay event will have, community manager David Dague commented: “The people working on Destiny 2 are more anxious than the players they’re eager to serve.

“It’s been more than a month since we first revealed an attack on our City. Now we’re going to show you how we’ll fight back. At this hour, the Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere is officially less than one week away.

“Seven days from now, there will be no new information to read on this blog. The details you’ve been seeking will be in your hands.

“You’ll be passing them back and forth, talking about what it all means to you. Guardians attending the event – some of whom you probably follow – will be going on record with impressions from a first-person, hands-on perspective.”

Following the big gameplay reveal, Bungie will be heading to E3, and will likely have a new Destiny 2 trailer to show off during the PlayStation Media Showcase.

But for some people, six days is a long time to wait and are looking to other sources of information to second-guess what might be revealed next week.

That’s where the new Destiny 2 hats come in.

A new range are being launched on July 29 to buy from Gamestop and apparently hold visual clues to how subclasses might be changing.

First of all, it appears that Hunter, Titan and Warlock will be returning as the main classes, which won’t come as much of a surprise.

What’s different is that each may come with an animal symbol, the Hunter has a snake, Warlock features a bird of prey, while Titan sports a lion.

All is sure to be revealed during the Destiny 2 gameplay reveal on May 18, which will be available to watch on the Bungie Twitch channel.

“We’ve tackled the immense responsibility of earning the right to put a number on the box,” Dague adds.

“In a matter of days, we’re going to Los Angeles to tell you how we’ve risen to that challenge.

A lot has been said about who gets to attend this event. The correct answer is “Everyone!” The revelation will be televised — or “streamed” to be accurate, but that gets in the way of a catchy old phrase.

“If you’re used to watching our streams, report to the usual outpost. If you want to browse some new options to follow the message in your own language, we just might have you covered this time.

“The Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere is an important moment for our community. We hope you’ll all be a part of the live audience.

“This is the perfect moment to reach back out into the void and reunite the wayward players on your friends list. A new Destiny adventure is about to begin, and we’ll need every Guardian at the ready.”
