Traini, who is now 29, spent the morning of February 3 cruising around the town of Macerata for about two hours, firing at African migrants from the window of his car with a pistol. Six people were injured.
As he faces justice over the brutal shooting spree, prosecutors have called for a 12-year jail term for Traini – just under half of the maximum 22-year penalty for his offences. Prosecutors accepted Traini’s guilty plea and requested a simplified court procedure.
At the beginning of his trial before the Court of Assizes, Traini read out an apology, telling the court that his time so far in prison has made him see the error of his ways. “Sorry, I was wrong “ he said. “I do not feel any racial hatred… [in] prison I have gained a new understanding of the facts.” The gunman went on to blame his upbringing for his behavior, adding that “they tell me I’m crazy or borderline, but I had only a difficult childhood.”
According to his five-page handwritten statement, published by newspaper La Repubblica, the gunman told the court that he went on his shooting spree as “he felt compelled to act to defend Pamela,” referring to murdered 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro.

Mastropietro’s body was found on January 31, dismembered and placed in two suitcases in the countryside at Pollenza. A Nigerian national was charged with her murder.
Deliberations over Traini’s jail term are currently underway, with a verdict expected soon.

“I am not a feminist but a woman,” Casta, 39, told Corsican news outlet Corse-Matin during an interview ahead of a local premiere on the Mediterranean island. “Women need not be afraid … How can we give so much power to others? We are big enough to say what we want! We are responsible for ourselves.”
Casta condemned #balancetonporc – or “#ratoutyourpig” – the French hashtag equivalent of the #MeToo campaign, in which millions of French women have made allegations of sexual abuse and harassment public on social media, as being too divisive.
“I do not agree with #balancetonporc. What next – #shameyourslut? Hostility and hatred of men won’t move things forward,” said Casta, who is married to fellow thespian Louis Garrel.
Casta, who in 1999 was picked as Marianne, the feminine symbol of the French Republic, said the focus on privileged victims and perpetrators throughout the campaign, which began with allegations against US film producer Harvey Weinstein, has taken attention away from other causes.
“When I hear of women being beaten to death and barely mentioned that’s what shocks me. Let’s talk not just about Hollywood actresses, but about all the victims. And also the heroines. For example, there are sporting achievements by women that get ignored. Let’s talk about the whole picture,” said Casta, who is a bigger celebrity in her homeland than abroad due to starring almost exclusively in French-language films.
Casta follows in the footsteps of another former Marianne, Catherine Deneuve, who led a group of 100 French artists and intellectuals in signing a letter castigating the “puritan” US-led media campaign. In the letter, published in the leading daily Le Monde on Tuesday, the authors said #MeToo “denunciations” leave no space for the accused to defend themselves, and consign women to being “eternal victims” in the romantic arena.
The authors argued that the achievements of sexual liberation must be preserved, and men should be “free to hit on women.”
“Rape is a crime but insistent or clumsy flirting is not, nor is gallantry a macho aggression,” wrote the authors, whose missive provoked a heated response from some feminist activists in France and abroad, who accused them of passing off sexual offenses as innocent fun.

Throw in a distaste for physical exercise, and in Kyle Krische’s case you hope to have three negatives turn into something positive.
The Kitchener, Ont., man is looking to use his enmity for the Maple Leafs to raise money for charity.
Krische, 27, who grew up a Detroit Red Wings fan thanks to his “smart” father, wants to raise at least $ 2,000 through donations of $ 5 for every goal the Maple Leafs score this season. He has started a campaign called Run Over The Buds, and fans can go there to donate with the money going to You Can Play, an organization dedicated to fighting homophobia in sports, along with removing stereotypes related to gender, ethnicity and disabilities.
(Kyle Krische)
As for the fitness part, Krische will punish himself by running one kilometre for every goal scored, which he’s chronicling on twitter at @RunOverTheBuds. That’s 40 km so far as the Auston Matthews-led Leafs are currently second in the NHL with 40 goals scored.
“I’m a solid five feet, ten inches, and a modest 230 pounds, so running isn’t exactly my forte,” Krische said.
Krische said the idea came to him after the Leafs began the season with 15 goals in their first two games.
“[The goals] just keep coming and I was getting furious, like actually angry watching my TV,” said Krische. “I’m going to go crazy if I keep watching these games, I need something to soften the blow.”
After years of teasing supporters of the woeful Leafs as his Red Wings won four Stanley Cups between 1997-2008, seeing the success of the Leafs was driving him crazy.
“I’m sitting on the couch literally with Twitter open just thinking of something I can say to anger Leaf fans,” Krische said, but finding something bad to say about the 7-2-0 Leafs is a bit tougher this season.
“I’m bringing the Leafs fans on board into this, where it can make you kind of get behind the funnier side of this … and [Leafs fans can] kind of back it and put their money where their mouth is,” he said.
To honour the Polak signing I dug up my own #heart and #grit and ran in the rain. I should be in the lineup next week #RunOverTheBudspic.twitter.com/vYiPP4rD1w
While he’s not a fan of running — the married father of a seven-month-old says he’s “doing blasts of six kilometres every night I can get away”— he says it’s worth it to raise money and bring awareness to a cause he thinks is important.
“[Equality is] still a big issue in sports, so I was like, ‘OK, I can try to do this running thing and try to raise money at the same time,” Krische said. You Can Play was started by Patrick Burke, son of Calgary Flames GM Brian Burke, so the connection to hockey made sense.
“You Can Play [seemed] like the easy choice,” said Krische, who now lives in Hamilton.
The Leafs are scoring at a league-leading 4.44 goals-per-game pace, which over 82 games comes out to 364 goals scored and translates into $ 1,820 with the $ 5-per-goal objective. Krische said he will personally donate $ 50 for every game the Leafs are shut out.
It also works out to almost the exact distance in kilometres between the home of his hated Leafs, the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and his beloved Red Wings’ new home, Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Krische could always make the run at the end of the season and catch a Detroit playoff game. Though any Leafs fan might say a look at the current standings makes that prospect unlikely.

Tommy Lee Jones is not a big fan of Jim Carrey. The two actors worked together on Joel Schumacher’s neon-lit live-action cartoon Batman Forever, and ever since then, Carrey has been recalling a now-famous story about how Jone simply could not stand him. You may have heard this story before, but now you can see the story come to life as Jim Carrey acts it out! Watch Jim Carrey’s Tommy Lee Jones story below.
Back when Batman Forever was in pre-production, Jim Carrey was just blowing-up from rubbery faced comedian to multimillion dollar super star. As a result, much of the hype leading up to Batman Forever was focused on Carrey’s performance as Batman’s green-clad nemesis The Riddler. This apparently didn’t sit too well with Academy Award inner Tommy Lee Jones, who was playing Two-Face in the film and was not even slightly in the mood for Carrey’s bullshit.
Appearing recently on Norm Macdonald Live, Carrey recounted the story for Norm Macdonald, much to everyone’s amusement. You can watch it below – it begins around the 1:08:29 mark (thanks to Birth.Movies.Death. for bringing this one to our attention).
As Carrey tells it, he ran into Jones at a restaurant right before the two began filming together, and it didn’t go so well. “The maitre d’ said, ‘Oh, I hear you’re working with Tommy Lee Jones. He’s over in the corner having dinner,’” Carrey says. “I went over and I said, ‘Hey Tommy, how are you doing?’ and the blood just drained from his face.” Carrey tried to salvage the situation, but Mr. Lee Jones was not having it, eventually telling Carrey, “I cannot sanction your buffoonery.”
Macdonald suggests that maybe Jones was unhappy about Carrey walking into a room and thus taking all his star power away, but Carrey magnanimously suggests, “He might have been uncomfortable doing that work [in Batman Forever], too…that’s not really his style of stuff.”
Carrey has told this story several times before, most notably on The Howard Stern Show, where the actor said, “I was really looking forward to working with Tommy, but he was a little crusty.”
Jones is a phenomenal actor, delivering stellar performances in films like No Country for Old Men and Lincoln, but he’s not exactly known for his light heartedness. Even in the frothy Men in Black films, Jones was the straight man for Will Smith’s comedic antics. If you don’t believe that Jones is a bit “crusty”, as Carrey says, just have a look at this photo of him reacting to a really funny Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell bit at the 2013 Golden Globes.
And if you’re still not convinced, look at this photo of Jones reacting to someone holding up an adorable puppy and asking, “Would you like to pet this puppy, Mr. Jones?”
Okay, that’s just the same picture again, but I’m pretty sure that’s how he’d react in that situation as well. In Jones’ defense, Carrey’s buffoonery was really off the charts in Batman Forever. At one point, Carrey knocks someone out with a coffee pot then shrieks, “Caffeine will kill ‘ya!” I don’t think I could sanction such buffoonery either. No matter what, though, I’d really like a filmmaker to cast Jones and Carrey in another film together so that the two actors can perhaps burry the hatchet. Or, at the very least, give us another great story about how miserable Tommy Lee Jones is.

Last month the first trailer for the upcoming black comedy was released and the latest set of reviews have been glowing.
The Death of Stalin comes from The Thick of It’s Armando Iannucci, who is well known for his behind-the-scenes take on political satire.
However his new movie, which follows the power struggle following the Russian dictator’s death in 1953, may not be released in the country it is set in.
According to The Guardian, Pavel Pozhigailo, a high-ranking adviser to the Russian culture ministry, has claimed the film is a “planned provocation.”
Apparently the Russian official believes The Death of Stalin “could be part of a western plot to destabilise Russia by causing rifts in society.”
Pozhigailo claimed the culture ministry will ban the film from screening if it has the potential to “incite hatred.”
However it’s not just he government who apparently hate the new movie, with The Communist Party – the second largest party in parliament – calling the movie “revolting.”
Meanwhile Vzglyad, a pro-Kremlin newspaper said The Death of Stalin was “a nasty send-up by outsiders who know nothing of our history … Should it be screened in Russia? Of course not.”
The Guardian reported that the country’s newspapers expressed outrage for the video’s “crude stereotyping of Russian culture.”
The British newspaper said that some viewers found the video “borderline racist”.
The Death of Stalin will be released in UK cinemas on October 20, 2017.

President Donald Trump denounced the violent clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides,” Trump said at a press conference. “On many sides.”
He added: “It’s been going on for a long, long time in our country. Not Donald Trump. Not Barack Obama. It’s been going on for a long, long time.”
The demonstrations turned deadly when a car plowed through a crowd of counter-protesters, resulting in multiple injuries and at least one death.
Trump said that he had spoken to Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, and that they “agreed that the hate and the division must stop and must stop right now.”
The president then went on to talk about how the US is “doing very well in so many ways,” and touted the recent jobs and unemployment numbers.
“We’re renegotiating trade deals to make them great for our country and great for the American workers,” he said. “We have so many incredible things happening, so when I watch Charlottesville, to me, it’s very, very sad.”
He rounded out the statement by saying that “no matter our color, creed, religion, or political party, we are all Americans first. We love our country, we love our God, we love our flag, we’re proud of our country, we’re proud of who we are.”
“So we want to get this situation straightened out in Charlottesville, and we want to study it, and we want to see what we’re doing wrong as a country where these kinds of things can happen,” he said.
Trump, who campaigned on using the term “radical Islamic terrorism” to refer to jihadist attacks, did not address the white nationalist rally that sparked the outbreaks in his statement on Saturday.
The protests accompanied a “Unite the Right” rally that was called by white nationalists in response to a plan to remove a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee from a park in Charlottesville, Virginia.
One of the counter-protesters who was hit by the car described the scene to a reporter shortly after. “There were just a few cars that counter-protesters were blocking,” the man said.
He then said that the driver of the car was “honking their horn” and then “they were just, like, bulldozing through people.”
Another witness had two friends who were hit by the car and had to take them to the hospital. The witness described the incident as “absolutely intentional.”
“A packed street and a car comes speeding down, at least 40 mph and rams into everyone, backs up and does it again,” they said in a text message to Outline staff writer William Turton.
“I am furious & heartsick by the car crash that has injured many,” Signer tweeted. “Please all-go home to your families. We can work tomorrow. GO HOME! PLEASE!”

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides,” Trump said in a Saturday address, adding that he has been “closely following” the events in Charlottesville.
“I just got off the phone with the governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, and we agreed that the hate and the division must stop, and must stop right now,” he said, adding, “We have to come together as Americans with love for our nation and true affection for each other.”
“No matter our color, creed, religion, our political party, we are all Americans first,” Trump said.
While Trump noted that the division “has been going on for a long, long time” he added that it “has no place in America.”
Trump later offered condolences to the victim of an apparent car attack in Charlottesville, which has been identified as a 32-year-old woman. The car rammed through a crowd of people taking part in the opposing rallies of “Unite the Right” protesters and counter-demonstrators and hitting other vehicles. RT America’s Alex Rubinstein reported that the people marching at the scene were anti-fascist demonstrators.
“Condolences to the family of the young woman killed today, and best regards to all of those injured, in Charlottesville, Virginia. So sad!” Trump tweeted.
It was not immediately clear what motivated the driver of the car, which smashed into another vehicle and tossed people in the air before speedily reversing, but police say they are treating the incident as homicide.
The apparent attack was preceded by confrontations between the “alt-Right” and the anti-fascists, which at times spilled over into violent brawls. A total of 35 people are reported to have been injured in Saturday’s violence, including 19 who were hit by the car. Five people are still in critical condition, the University of Virginia Medical Center said in its latest updates.
Two more people were killed just outside Charlottesville on Saturday as a police helicopter crashed in a wooded area on Old Farm Road in Albemarle County. Reports suggest that the helicopter was earlier circling above the crowds, monitoring the protests.

First Lady Melania Trump also criticized the violence in Virginia, tweeting: “Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let’s communicate w/o hate in our hearts. No good comes from violence.”
However, many Trump critics, including media outlets generally critical of Trump, have taken the Saturday statements as a sign the president is unwilling to directly criticize the far-right nationalists, who are considered to be pro-Trump.
Some have lashed out on Trump on Twitter for seemingly blaming “many sides” rather than the white supremacists, whom they consider to be responsible for the violence.
Trump didn’t mention car attack. Didn’t mention “white supremacists” “neo-Nazis” or “hate groups” by name. It was a “both sides” statement.
— Dell Cameron (@dellcam) August 12, 2017
Others have disagreed with the idea that the white nationalists were solely to blame, saying that both sides engaged in clashes throughout the day. Right-wing writer Mike Cernovich tweeted a photo of protesters with Confederate flags facing off with a black masked man holding an improvised aerosol can flamethrower, who is pointing the flame at the group of white nationalists. He argued that the critics of the far-right “ignore half of this picture.”
Saturday’s demonstration was originally meant as a right-wing protest against the removal of the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from Emancipation Park, known as the Lee Park before it was renamed by the decision of the city council in June. On Facebook, the “Unite the Right” rally’s aim was also described as to “unify the right-wing against a totalitarian Communist crackdown” and “affirm the right of Southerners and white people to organize for their interests just like any other group is able to do.”
However, it attracted crowds of counter-demonstrators, which included anti-fascist and Black Lives Matter protesters. Clashes between these groups and the far-right protesters resulted in the city proclaiming a state of emergency.

US Magistrate Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis granted the prosecution’s request to keep Ftouhi in Genesee County Jail until the detention hearing, scheduled for June 28.
Ftouhi, 48, is a dual citizen of Tunisia and Canada, a father of three, and has lived in Montreal, Quebec for the past 10 years, the Flint Journal reported. He entered the US legally on June 16 at Lake Champlain, New York, according to the FBI.
The Tunisian-born Ftouhi primarily speaks Arabic and French, his public defender David Kelzer told Davis. His English was additionally difficult to understand because of the face mask, which Davis allowed Ftouhi to move aside after consulting with the marshal.
“None of what you were doing before, okay?” Kelzer told Ftouhi, according to the Flint Journal.
The federal complaint against Ftouhi says he attacked Lieutenant Jeff Neville of the airport police with a serrated knife. Neville suffered critical injuries to his neck, but is now recovering at an area hospital.
Ftouhi’s weapon was described as an “Amazon Jungle Survival Knife.” He told investigators he tried to buy a gun at a trade center in in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, but was denied because he was not a US citizen, WJBK reported.
Investigators said Ftouhi screamed “Allahu akbar” (Arabic for “God is great”) as he stabbed Neville. He followed that up with something along the lines of: “You have killed people in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and we are all going to die,” the federal complaint said.
“Suffice to say, he has a hatred for the United States,” David Gelios, head of the FBI field office in Detroit, told reporters.
“At this time, we view him as a lone-wolf attacker,” Gelios said. “We have no information to suggest any training,” or a wider plot, he added.
On Thursday, Canadian authorities raided Ftouhi’s home in the Montreal borough of Villeray-St Michel, and took three people in for questioning, Montreal police spokesman Benoit Boiselle told AP.
Ftouhi was “a good person” and “never made any trouble,” his landlord, Luciano Piazza, told AP. The Tunisian was quiet, he said, adding that Ftouhi worked as a part-time caretaker of the property.
According to Ftouhi’s Facebook posts, he went to college in Tunisia and in Canada, and worked for a Canadian insurance company. In court, however, he was described as an “on-and-off” truck driver, who last worked two weeks ago. He therefore qualifies for a federally appointed defender and will be represented by Joan Morgan, a Flint-based attorney.

Truth is in trouble. Fake news. State disinformation campaigns. Facebook bubbles. But even as our deeply polarized electorate sets fire to The Enlightenment, there’s one shred of common belief that unites the right and left-wings of the world: the idea that Comcast is Bad. It’s downright patriotic.
Former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who spent years making the case that President Obama was an existential threat to America, has found an even bigger threat: Comcast. After missing a service appointment today, Huckabee responded proportionally by comparing Comcast to the mafia, cold molasses, root canals, United Airlines, and North Korea.
@comcast is now operated by the N. Korean missile launch team. Epic failure!
— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) April 17, 2017
Mafia better service than @comcast Sure they shoot you, but it’s over with and they don’t charge you for the bullet.
— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) April 17, 2017
How bad is @comcast service? I’d rather have Obama back as President than have Comcast.
— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) April 17, 2017
Huckabee’s tweetstorm is a setback for Comcast, which announced in 2015 that it planned to stop being the worst company in America.
Disclosure: Comcast is an investor in Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company.
