The general consensus about the “The Grand Tour” season 1 seemed to be that there were teething problems, some things didn’t really work and scenarios seemed more contrived than they had been on “Top Gear.” However, it was still a car show featuring Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, whose chemistry hadn’t diminished and who still deliver a far better product than any of the other English-speaking hosts that have been assembled under the banner of “Top Gear.” Viewers seemed willing to give “The Grand Tour” some leeway with the assumption that things would get better in season 2.

Well, it’s here and I woke up this morning to find episode 1 ready to watch on Amazon Prime. First thing’s first: were the main season 1 problems corrected? Yes!

Thing No. 1 that didn’t work about season 1 was “The American.” As was previously reported, Mike Skinner is gone. Good riddance. However, as there was no hot new car featured in the premiere, there was no need to take it around the Eboladrome and therefore no clue as to who or what will replace The American. Stay tuned.

Thing No. 2 that didn’t work was celebrity brain crash. Personally, I didn’t hate it – it sort of worked in a “You killed Kenny! You bastard!” kind of way – but it always dragged on too long, a symptom of the show’s general pacing issues. Nevertheless, it too is gone, because as they say on this week’s episode “We’re not doing it anymore because too many people died … And because you all hated it.”

In its place is “Celebrity Face Off,” where a pair of celebrities from a similar field will each post a lap time in a Jaguar F-Type around a new, rather nifty track that is part paved and part gravel. Looks fun. As it was on “Top Gear,” the interview itself drags on too long and its quality will obviously depend on the celebrities in question. In this case it’s a battle of former talent show judges: David Hasselhoff from “America’s Got Talent” and Ricky Wilson from the British version of “The Voice” and lead singer of the Kaiser Chiefs. It’s as thrilling as you might imagine, but then “Top Gear” basically had the exact same feature. Except there are two people competing against each other rather than adding their times to a big board, and the car is good instead of reasonably priced, and it’s totally different enough that the BBC won’t sue them.

Beyond that, I suppose it’s important to note that “The Grand Tour” isn’t really touring anymore. Well, at least the tent isn’t. It would seem it’s parked permanently in what is apparently Jeremy Clarkson’s backyard. And by backyard I mean palatial English estate. As the moving tent didn’t really add that much to the show, I’m fine with it.

“The tent may be here,” Clarkson says in the episode. “But this is still ‘The Grand Tour’ and the globe is still our playground.”

Conversation Street is back once again and like the rest of the show it continues to feel more scripted than “Top Gear” ever did. It’s hard to know why but the banter feels more contrived now, as do the scenarios in which the guys find themselves on their adventures.

Specifically, in the first episode, they are driving super cars through Switzerland: Clarkson in a Lamborghini Aventador S, May in a Honda NSX and the Hammond in the Croatian electric super car, the Rimac Concept 1.

“Well, we all know how that ends,” Clarkson muddles under his breath, telegraphing what had previously been widely reported during the segment’s filming. But I won’t spoil it in case you missed it. If you do know, however, the event in question is rather nail biting. I thought it was handled well.

Like many past TG/GT challenges featuring a trio of super cars, though, this one isn’t quite as entertaining as those featuring old cars or more ordinary cars where more can naturally go wrong. Or rather, go wrong without ending in a fireball, a medivac chopper and the premature end to the challenge. But there I go spoiling things.

So, should you watch it? Sure! The preview of the season showed plenty of interesting cars (Ford GT, Kia Stinger, Mercedes GT R) and adventures (I’m particularly looking forward to their trip to Colorado in a trio of old Jaguars), so I’m going to say there is in fact improvement, they’ve heard the criticism and although this particular episode could’ve been better, it felt more like the “Top Gear” of old.

Hot on the heels of Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff hoping that Robert Rodriguez could direct him in a Logan-esque film adaptation of the beloved 1980s TV series featuring the Baywatch star as an aged Michael Knight, we have news on the development of a Knight Rider movie, but it’s not going to make David Hasselhoff happy at all.

The Weinstein Company is reportedly taking a crack at making a Knight Rider movie, but rather than taking a more serious approach, the project will follow in the footsteps of 21 Jump Street by making it an action comedy. Furthermore, they want to put John Cena behind the steering wheel as Michael Knight and they’re considering Kevin Hart to provide the voice of the talking car called KITT.

ScreenRant has the news on the development of a Knight Rider movie at The Weinstein Company, but they caution that both John Cena and Kevin Hart are not attached to the project, but merely the actors that the studio hopes to get on board. Considering the rising star of John Cena as a comedy and action star, not to mention the box office draw of Kevin Hart, those are picks that make complete sense. But are they the best choices for the movie?

John Cena has proven himself to be a surprisingly good talent on screen. The wrestler turned actor was making straight-to-DVD quality action movies like The Marine, 12 Rounds and Vengeance. But more recently, he’s found a better calling in comedy with supporting roles in Sisters, Trainwreck, the HBO Sports mockumentary Tour de Pharmacy and the upcoming sequel Daddy’s Home 2. If he can balance that comedy out with some kick-ass action, he might be on a path to being the next Dwayne Johnson. But I’m not sure if he’s ready to lead a movie like this just yet

Meanwhile, Kevin Hart is obviously a huge comedy star around the world. He’s already teamed with Dwayne Johnson for Central Intelligence and he’s about to do it again in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, so why not partner him up with the next big wrestler turned actor? But for me personally, Hart’s voice is one of the most annoying things about him. I know that his hyper behavior and yelling is what makes people laugh when he’s in a movie or performing stand-up, but for me it gets old fast. I’m not sure I can handle him utilizing only his voice as KITT.

The problem I foresee with The Weinstein Company’s hope for Knight Rider is that audiences aren’t going to flock to a movie based on a TV show just because they recognize the title. The reception of Baywatch and CHIPS this year is evidence of that. Studios think it’s so easy to create the next 21 Jump Street, but most movies trying for that goal don’t even come close. While John Cena and Kevin Hart may have box office appeal, I’m not sure they’re the best duo to make Knight Rider work properly as an action comedy. But that all depends on who ends up writing and directing

You know who I would like to see in a Knight Rider movie? I’d put T.J. Miller in the role as a detective who is being punished for some mistake in the field by forcing him to be part of a new experimental project that puts artificial intelligence into a police car. Then I’d make Bill Hader the voice of KITT. That’s what I want to see in a Knight Rider movie.

This kind of movie just feels like a Dubus short story. Director Rachel Lambert is making her feature debut with a firecracker of a story that feels haunting and tense, coated in a patina of pain. I love it all. Additionally, this is being produced by Jeff Nichols who only helps to increase the value proposition of a movie that’s going to be available On Demand next week. Win-Win.

Lucky Trailer

Pretty in Pink or Alien. For me, it was Pretty in Pink.

It was one of those two films who many would come to know Henry Dean Stanton. This trailer doesn’t seem so much as an advertisement for a movie as it does a sizzle reel for Stanton’s acting. The story here seems downright sad while being somewhat optimistic about the future ahead for our protagonist. I’m sure entirely what director John Carroll Lynch, himself a great three name character actor, is going for but the scenes that are left to breathe show why Stanton has stuck around for as long as he has. It’s vibrant and has an electric hum that makes this one to keep track of.

Celebrate Studio Ghibli Trailer

Lucky are those who live in New Zealand and Australia who get a festival of their own whereby 22 Studio Ghibli films will be playing at cinemas all around these two territories. Sure, many of you have these as Blu-rays, DVDs, imports, what have you, but the chance to indulge in seeing these on the big screen with perhaps your kids in tow, finally something other than Boss Baby for you to have to sit through, is a marvelous opportunity. Entirely jealous for the lot of you who are able to attend. Amazingly well-done and sumptuous trailer to boot, too.

Barbecue Trailer

Fascinated.

I’m not sure how deep and how life-affirming the message is in director Matthew Salleh’s doc on flaming meats over a heat source but as someone who genuinely is entranced by watching food documentaries and finds them oddly soothing this is exactly my jam. The multitude of stories being told from all over the world is really the hook here as is the steady pace at which we observe people preparing food to be consumed. It’s almost meditative to see these things happening before our eyes, as the mundane-ness of everyday living can sometimes be the most fascinating when looking at another culture.

Killing Hasselhoff Trailer

When I see bad trailers I try and shield you from them. It does me no good to punch downward on something that dozens of talented folks have put a lot of work in trying to produce. However, when director Darren Grant, who can be credited for starting the ball rolling with our culture’s fascination with the cinematic permutations of Madea with Diary of a Mad Black Woman, should know better. I’m a little shocked, to be honest, at how painfully unfunny, cringey, and messy this whole thing is. See for yourself. Or not. You’d be better off not.
