RELATED STORIES

Justin Hartley was shooting This Is Us in New York City, in the cold last winter, when he got the good news: He was going to be an (onscreen) dad.

Series creator Dan Fogelman told Hartley and co-star Sterling K. Brown while “we were in the middle of a scene,” Hartley recalls. What would follow — Kevin and Madison’s one-night-stand that turned into two-very-real-babies — is “an amazing story,” he says. “I love the fact that it’s not your traditional ‘get married, have kids and then struggle with raising them.’”

Yet even the eternally sunny Kevin Pearson wouldn’t be able to ignore the fact that Madison and Kev aren’t exactly each other’s soulmate — at least, not yet. “It’s sort of an odd pairing, and they’re trying to make it work,” he notes. “They have an affection toward one another, but I don’t know how deep it is yet.”

When the NBC drama returns Tuesday (9/8c), its first 2021 episode will deal directly with that very question. (In a promo, Madison reminds Kevin that he said he was “all in” on his commitment to her and their imminent twins, and he replies with a hard-to-read “I know what I said.”)

TVLine recently got Hartley on the phone to talk about Kevin and Madison’s situation, what Rebecca’s increasing mental decline has to do with it, and more.

this-is-us-justin-hartley-interview-season-5-episode-5-TVLINE | Coming into Episode 5, is there any lingering doubt in Kevin’s mind about the path he’s forged with Madison? Or is he full steam ahead on “This is a good thing, and it’s all going to work out?”
I think the doubt is showcased in Kevin in fear. The fear that it might not work out. Gosh, I mean what if they can’t coexist together and be this cohesive unit that comes together and raises these kids, and he [only] sees them on the weekends? There’s all of that stuff. Probably, those are the things that keep Kevin awake at night. He said as much in the last episode. He sits there and stares at the ceiling and worries. All that worry comes from fear, the fear that it absolutely will not work out and that he’s trying to force something.

I’ve said this before: You can’t really force love. It doesn’t work. He’s also in a little bit of a predicament. It’s not like he’s dating a woman that he doesn’t want to be dating. He’s in a situation where she’s having his babies. And he has, his whole life, been bound by this idea that he wants to be what his father knew he could be. Because that was cut so short, Kevin doesn’t give himself the breaks that maybe he should. He doesn’t cut himself any slack… and then he finds himself in a bigger predicament. It’s not him messing up for the sake of messing up or being selfish, as we saw him do several years ago.

It’s that he puts a lot of stress and pressure on himself, and that sometimes can lead to the balloon popping, so to speak.

this-is-us-justin-hartley-interview-season-5-episode-5-TVLINE | It seems like the movie he’s currently filming is not going to help, with a hard-to-please director who has gone out of his way to let Kevin know he’s not going to pat him on the head. Tell me if you think I’m wrong, but it feels like Kevin has some impostor syndrome going on here.
I don’t think that’s overstated. I would say he’s going through yet another existential crisis. [Laughs] If I were his therapist, I would say you’ve got to prioritize the things in your life that are important to you and not live your life for other people. If you look at what he’s actually been able to accomplish, he’s dedicated to being an amazing dad and raising these kids together. Whatever that thing ends up being with Madison, he’s going to give it his all. His career is on track. This won’t be the last movie in the history of the world. Maybe you say no to the movie, or maybe you can do both. Maybe you don’t have to be there every waking moment of the babies’ lives. There are other things that you have to do.

You have to leave and go put food on the table. There are other things. Live your life for yourself a little bit. But I don’t know if Kevin does that. I think he’s so focused, and he’s on a mission. With a good heart, but just sometimes a little bit misguided.

TVLINE | I loved seeing Jamie Chung pop up as Kevin’s co-star in the film. Do you two have more scenes coming up?
I haven’t seen any. I don’t know if [the show] plans on shooting much of the movie. I guess it would depend on that.

this-is-us-justin-hartley-interview-season-5-episode-5-TVLINE | How clearly is Kevin seeing Rebecca’s level of mental decline right now? It can be a hard thing to accept.
I think that’s part of the stress. That’s why he’s eager to have these babies, and he wants his mom to meet the babies. Look, he’s aware that this decline is degenerative. It’s not going to get better. You have moments where it might be like, “She’s better today than she was yesterday. She’s better this week than she was last week.” But it’s a degenerative disease. There’s a fall-off. I think he wants to make sure that he has these babies and his mom meets them and spends as much time with them as she possibly can have. And also maybe that might actually…sometimes when you spend time around animals or babies or whatever it slows down the demise of your disease. So he’s definitely aware of all of that.

[In the pandemic], how are you…gosh, that’s a stressful thing, too. If you have these twins and I want them to meet Mom, but I can’t right now. It’s not safe. It’s like every single second you hear the clock ticking. Kevin’s got a biological clock, let me put it that way. [Laughs] Kevin is the only man alive that has a biological clock that’s ticking.

This Is Us star Justin Hartley is taking on another emotional drama in his downtime: The actor is set to lead The Noel Diary, Netflix’s film adaptation of Richard Paul Evans’ 2017 novel.

Hartley will play Jacob, a bestselling author who returns home during the holidays to settle his estranged mother’s estate after she passes away. As he digs through the many items his mother hoarded over the years, he comes across a diary left by someone named Noel, which may hold secrets to Jacob’s own past. And when he receives an unexpected visitor named Rachel, a beautiful woman on a mysterious journey of her own, the two of them try to make sense of their pasts and rewrite their futures.

Bonnie Bedelia (Parenthood) and Treat Williams (Everwood) will co-star opposite Hartley, who is also an executive producer on the film. Charles Shyer (Father of the Bride, Alfie) will direct.

Hartley currently plays actor Kevin Pearson on This Is Us, which is set to return for Season 5 sometime this fall on NBC. Though a return date has yet to be announced due to the coronavirus pandemic, series creator Dan Fogelman has confirmed that the global health crisis will be written into Season 5, teasing that “we’ve decided to attack things head on” in the new episodes.

Our sister site Deadline first reported the news of Hartley’s Noel Diary casting. Is your interest in the movie piqued?

General Hospital’s Kelly Monaco Recast Temporarily With Lindsay Hartley https://briefnews.eu/general-hospitals-kelly-monaco-recast-temporarily-with-lindsay-hartley/ https://briefnews.eu/general-hospitals-kelly-monaco-recast-temporarily-with-lindsay-hartley/#respond Sat, 01 Aug 2020 02:49:01 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/general-hospitals-kelly-monaco-recast-temporarily-with-lindsay-hartley/

On the veritable eve of ABC’s General Hospital returning with its first fresh episodes in 10 weeks comes word that the character of Sam will soon, if temporarily, look different.

As reported by Daytime Confidential, Passions alum Lindsay Hartley (ex-Theresa) was tapped to fill in as Sam, replacing longtime cast member Kelly Monaco in the role.

“Some big shoes to fill…precious too,” Hartley shared on Twitter. “I hope you enjoy watching Sam as much as I have enjoyed playing her, temporarily ❤🙏🏻”

Why the short-term switcheroo? Monaco’s mother fielded that burning question on Twitter, once GH fans got to fretting.

“Kelly is great and should be back on set Monday,” Carmina Monaco reassured, explaining that Kelly was sidelined by a 14-day quarantine after encountering a breathing problem with her mask on her first day back on the soap’s set. But after three COVID tests that all came up negative, “I’d say she is better than great,” Carmina said. “Thank you for all of the love 💕”

ABC recently announced that General Hospital will be back on the air with new episodes beginning Monday, Aug. 3, having resumed production after a four-month coronavirus-imposed shutdown. (Get storyline details here.)

GH will be the second of broadcast TV’s four daytime dramas to get back on the air with new episodes, following CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, which returned with originals on July 21.

A return date for The Young and the Restless, which has been back in production for a week, remains TBD. NBC’s Days of Our Lives — currently in the throes of a mass cast exodus — will head back to the studio in September without any lapse in fresh material (the show benefited from having eight months of episodes banked when production was halted in March).

RELATED STORIES

This Is Us‘ Kevin realized this week exactly how much he cared for his ex-wife, Sophie, just as it became nearly certain that they will never be together again. To invoke a movie often referenced in Tuesday’s episode: How do you like them apples?

The hour found Kevin returning to Pittsburgh to attend Sophie’s mother’s funeral. While there, he reminisced about several pivotal moments in their relationship, including the night Jack died. And later, in a surprising turn of events, Kev slept with Madison — yes, that Madison — once he returned to Los Angeles. (Read a full recap here.)

TVLine got Justin Hartley on the phone pronto to discuss Kevin’s heartache (that scene in the car!), his inevitable reaction to the unexpected hook-up (there’s no way this can end well, right?) and Hartley’s experience directing his co-stars in Kate’s upcoming part of the trilogy (which will air on Tuesday, Feb. 11).

this-is-us-kevin-madison-sex-season-4-justin-hartley-interviewTVLINE | In this episode, we get a lot more context for Kevin and Sophie’s relationship over the years. What was your take as you were reading these moments from their past in the script?
It’s interesting that what brought them back together is the funeral, right? That’s the very thing that may be the pivotal point in Kevin’s life. You learn it in this episode when he says, “This is where my childhood ended.” You learn that she was the one who was there with him when he got that news. And when she gets this news that her mother passes away, one of the first things she does is she calls him. There’s a lot of weight to that. They have a connection. It’s special. These are two people that are forever connected. It’s his ex-wife, you know? They’re different people now, too. Especially him. He’s finally found himself, and he’s comfortable in his own skin. It’s that heartbreak — he said it at the gravesite… He said, “The sad part is that I’m finally ready”…. He’s sitting there with this woman, an arm’s length away from her. It’s all he wants, and he can’t have it. It’s so sad, isn’t it?

TVLINE | It is. And it read to me as it’s not just him feeling that. She’s giving it back to him, too.
Totally. But I also think that he’s, in a way — in every way, actually — being a man and being there for her. The suffering that’s going on in him is taxing and it’s hard, because he’s not going to be able to get what he wants. But he knows that and he’s willing to suffer through that to be there for her. He’s [got] tunnel vision. He’s like, “I’m going to be there for her, always. I will never not be there for her,” and suffering through all of that, the idea of her walking back in there and going back to her fiancé, which is what she should do, because [Kevin] hasn’t been the greatest to her. [Exhales] It’s an interesting thing. I thought that was so great. He’s putting himself second and putting her first. It’s what you should do, right? If he would’ve been able to do that earlier, maybe the outcome would’ve been different. But it’s sad.

this-is-us-kevin-madison-sex-season-4-justin-hartley-interviewTVLINE | We don’t actually see Sophie’s fiancé’s face. Will we meet him before the end of the season?
It’s John Stamos. [Laughs] Will we meet him by the end of the season? Probably. Eh, maybe? Maybe. Maybe.

TVLINE | Sidebar: Interviewing your cast is always amazing, because anything past the immediate episode is full of “Could be! I don’t know! We’ll see what happens!”
Listen, lemme just tell you. Let me apologize for all of us. We’re the worst f—king interviews ever, because we cannot tell you s—t. [Laughs] There’s a mandate. But [you’re] on the phone, asking really great questions, obviously did [your] homework, really invested and these questions are great, and we literally can’t give you anything. We’re the dud interview people.

TVLINE | First of all, you’ve clearly never read a dud interview. This is not one of them.
[Laughs]

TVLINE | And second, if you were trying to butter me up, it worked. Now you can skate through the rest of this interview.
Challenged accepted! [Laughs]

TVLINE | Let’s talk about how Kevin sleeps with Madison, who is the second friend of Kate’s he’s moved in on.
Wait, is that true? What do you mean? Who was the first one?

TVLINE | Sophie was Kate’s friend first, right?
Oh yeah. Yeah, you’re right. Look, here’s the deal. For the first one, he was smitten. They were little kids, and then it turned into something more. But this one, yeah, this one’s a little bit… That’s kind of a forbidden fruit thing, right? You don’t sleep with your sister’s best friend. You can’t do that!

TVLINE | Especially when you’ve always kind of been annoyed by her. I’ve never gotten the sense there was a close bond between Madison and Kevin.
They’re mutually annoyed with each other. She thinks he’s ridiculous. Hey, look: Things change. [Laughs]

TVLINE | We don’t see what the vibe between them is like afterwards. Give me a sense of it, because he’s clearly feeling awkward when he’s whispering on the phone with Randall.
Oh, totally — and guilt. She’s not chopped liver. It’s nothing like that. But he understands what that is. That’s his sister’s [friend]. He shouldn’t have done that. That’s his sister’s best friend. Have a little more self-control. But at the same time, they’re both single. It was kind of the perfect storm: We’re both adults, we’re both single, whatever. Then he’s like, “Oh God, my sister, oh God.” I will tell you: It’s a couple episodes in the future, but it does get addressed between Madison and Kevin. It’s hilarious. It’s out of control hilarious. [Laughs]

TVLINE | Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger said last week that The Big Three’s trip to the cabin would be hard, because none of them are at their best, yet they’re having to step up and be there for each other.
We finish out the trilogy with Kate. There’s definitely some back story there. You start to see her relationship with her boyfriend and what all that means and how that influenced and affected who she is now and all of that stuff. That’s really great. The cabin stuff, it is interesting. Trying to be there for other people when you’re going through a lot of stuff is difficult. But they’re all connected. They’re family. And some s—t comes out. There’s a minor blow-up. Different ways of handling important situations. The fact that Kevin — should I be saying this? I shouldn’t be saying this — there’s a problem between Kevin and Randall.

TVLINE | We knew that was going to start at some point.
Yeah. It has to do with the way people handle certain things, and it becomes a dealbreaker situation. It’s massive. There’s two sides to the story and they both have their points, and I get both sides. But when I step into Kevin’s shoes, obviously, I only get one side of it.

https://tvline.com/2020/01/21/this-is-us-season-4-episode-12-spoilers-kevin-sophie/TVLINE | You directed next week’s episode, which is Kate’s part of the trilogy and Chrissy Metz’s showcase. Tell me how that compared to the episode of Smallville you directed in 2011.
Less greenscreen. [Laughs] They were both great. Smallville was an iconic show that went on for 10 years, and I was really lucky to be able to direct that show. That was an incredible time in my life. I poured everything I had into that. As you get older and you gain more experience, with that experience comes more knowledge and with that knowledge hopefully comes more being able to execute certain things and give notes in a certain way. Hopefully, I’m better now than I was back then. We have the best actors in the planet on our show, so it’s a gift to be able to “direct” these people. I said to them, “I’m not directing as much as I giving little nuggets of inspiration while you guys are acting and doing the amazing things you’re doing,” and hopefully that comes across in the performance a little bit. They bring it every week. There’s not one moment of one scene that goes by where you’re like, “Eh, they weren’t really there for that performance.” It’s incredible. They’re great. So it’s easy in that regard.

TVLINE | I know you and Chrissy are tight. Did you have conversations about what was going to happen during filming?
A ton. And that’s part of the thing, too: understanding that I’m not the person… that comes in and assumes that after 80 episodes of playing this character that I’m going to change… it’s annoying. But what I can do is read the script 900 million times, and I can give an idea or a story about something that happened to me one time that reminds me of what’s happening here, how it was different or whatever. And then you just watch that actor process that information and then use the tools and their skills to bring all of that to life. It’s really incredible to watch. Mandy was phenomenal in this episode, as well. When you see the dynamic between the two of them in that episode, oh my gosh. I’m not sure they’ve ever really done that with them.

James Bond: Daniel Craig replacement 'frontrunner' Justin Hartley SPEAKS OUT on 007 rumour https://briefnews.eu/james-bond-daniel-craig-replacement-frontrunner-justin-hartley-speaks-out-on-007-rumour/ https://briefnews.eu/james-bond-daniel-craig-replacement-frontrunner-justin-hartley-speaks-out-on-007-rumour/#respond Wed, 20 Feb 2019 16:57:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/james-bond-daniel-craig-replacement-frontrunner-justin-hartley-speaks-out-on-007-rumour/

Hartley, 42, is a popular star of the small screen after becoming part of the phenomenally successful drama series. He also formerly appeared in Smallville, The Young and the Restless and Revenge. His name has been knocked around as a potential successor to Daniel Craig in the James Bond movies – and he spoke about it, albeit briefly, on Ellen DeGeneres’ chatshow yesterday.

When DeGeneres informed him of a rumour that his name is “on a list”, he said: “Cool! Yeah, I would do [it].”

However, when DeGeneres highlighted that he would be a good choice for the role, he jokily referenced a faked nearly-nude photo that she had shown viewers just moments before.

“That was before you showed that photo, now it’s trending the other way!” he quipped.

Hartley then did a funny mock audition, in which he drank one of Bond’s signature Martinis. Watch the full video below.

Currently Hartley has odds of 10/1 with UniBet, putting him ahead of contenders such as Michael Fassbender (20/1), Henry Cavill (25/1) and Will Poulter (33/1).

The favourite with most bookmakers is Tom Hiddleston on 5/2 with Ladbrokes.

Richard Madden follows on 3/1, with James Norton on 4/1 and Idris Elba on 5/1.

Before any new James Bonds are enlisted, there’s still the small matter of Daniel Craig’s final outing as the iconic spy.

This Is Us' Justin Hartley Reacts to That Tragic Trailer Trip-Up: 'Everything's Probably Going to Fall Apart For Him' https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-reacts-to-that-tragic-trailer-trip-up-everythings-probably-going-to-fall-apart-for-him/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-reacts-to-that-tragic-trailer-trip-up-everythings-probably-going-to-fall-apart-for-him/#respond Wed, 13 Feb 2019 10:56:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-reacts-to-that-tragic-trailer-trip-up-everythings-probably-going-to-fall-apart-for-him/ Warning: This post contains spoilers for Tuesday’s This Is Us.

If you were caught off-guard by what happened at the end of this week’s This Is Us, well, star Justin Hartley says, so was Kevin.

As those who watched “Songbird Road: Part Two” know, Kev’s mission to help his newfound Uncle Nicky deal with post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism failed rather spectacularly. And when a dejected Kevin went to Nicky’s trailer by himself to assess some repairs, he wound up drinking a serious amount of his uncle’s liquor, ending a period of sobriety that began when Kev was in rehab last season.

“I knew what was happening, but I don’t think Kevin did,” Hartley says. “I don’t think he, at all, expected any of that to happen. Up until the very end, he was under the impression that he was still in control of this thing.”

Executive producer/co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker observes that the abrupt end to Kevin’s long, emotional journey to get at the truth behind Jack’s medallion “was a real blow” to The (former) Manny. “It’s a low point, and he turned to what he turns to to get through things, which is the bottle.”

In a candid conversation with TVLine, Hartley explores how the “family schism” that unfolded over the past several episodes has seriously challenged Kevin’s memories of Jack. “This whole thing that he thought about his father,” he says, “has now been turned on its ear.”

Read on as Hartley breaks down the episode and offers his thoughts on Kev’s immediate future.

TVLINE | What was running through your mind when you first heard that Kevin was going to take a drink after so long?
One of the things that I was thinking is, if he made a phone call to Zoe, and she picked up the phone, and they were able to talk about what was going on for maybe even just a minute, I wonder if he would’ve gone down that path, you know? It’s a real thing, This happens all the time. People get sober, and then they “fall off the wagon,” and they get sober again… It’s just an everyday struggle for him. Hopefully, he’ll do it right this time. Hopefully, it won’t be this big, huge thing for him. But gosh, it is heartbreaking, isn’t it? Because I feel like he’s gotten far, and now, here we go again.

This Is Us Season 3 Episode 12TVLINE | How do you think this development might play out between Kevin and Zoe?
There’s a lot of things that go along with it, right? This idea that he’s got this thing under control, and their relationship is based on that fact. And then she’s going to find out that he obviously doesn’t, at least not right now. He’s not taking care of himself. Kevin, he’s got this great, big spirit. And he’s got this idea that he can solve a bunch of problems. He’s really good at fixing other people, or helping other people, and being there in a time of need.

Just to walk through it: He gets out of rehab, and he immediately starts fielding job prospects, and goes to a movie premiere that apparently goes really well. And then he meets a woman, falls in love with her, and has her move into his place — and we don’t see him in [Alcoholics Anonymous] meetings. We don’t see him with a sponsor. We don’t see him ever talking about alcohol. He’s doing the thing that he did before with his father, and it’s so interesting how patterns repeat. He was the one that kept saying, “Listen, I don’t need to cry all the time. My dad’s dead, big deal, okay? It happened a long time ago. I’m over it. It’s fine. Move on.” And then you realize, this is just his way of dealing with it — not dealing with it — and it’s the same kind of thing that he’s doing with his addiction, and it comes back to kind of bite him. So yeah, there’s that.

There’s the embarrassment, there’s the humiliation, there’s the helplessness, there’s the feeling of failure. There’s the feeling of, “I’ve lied to these people, now I have to pick up the pieces.” He’s going to probably go into some kind of a hiding thing to try to make sure that people don’t see what he’s really up to, which is a telltale sign. So everything’s probably going to fall apart for him. I hope not, but it probably will.

TVLINE | The upside is that when that happens to him, you’ll get good stuff to play.
[Laughs] Well, yeah. I know. What a selfish thing to say, but I absolutely, 100 percent agree with you.

TVLINE | You bring up the AA meetings. I was going to mention that we haven’t seen him at anything like that. You’re saying that it’s not happening offscreen, either?
Yeah… I thought, “Well, maybe they’re just not writing that. Maybe he’s going to meetings and they’re just not writing it.” But you know, our writers don’t do that. It would have been a comment. He would have, you know, instead of coming through the door and being like, “Oh yeah, I was at a meeting with a producer,” [Zoe] would have said, “How was your meeting?” and he would have said, “It was good,” and then they would have gone on with their lives. [The writers] don’t gloss over anything, so I truly believe he’s just not going. I don’t have that as a fact, but that’s how I’ve been playing it, that he’s just, he’s neglecting to take care of himself in the midst of taking care of everyone else, and making sure that this new relationship that he has is going well, and dealing with Vietnam, and dealing with Zoe and all of her stuff, and having her say, I don’t want to move in, and kind of slowing things down with her, and then getting her back. I think he’s just neglecting self-care, honestly.

This Is Us' Justin Hartley Warns That 'Worse Things Will Happen' to a Guilt-Ridden Kevin in the Near Future https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-warns-that-worse-things-will-happen-to-a-guilt-ridden-kevin-in-the-near-future/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-warns-that-worse-things-will-happen-to-a-guilt-ridden-kevin-in-the-near-future/#respond Wed, 15 Nov 2017 07:37:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-warns-that-worse-things-will-happen-to-a-guilt-ridden-kevin-in-the-near-future/ For This Is Us‘ Kevin Pearson, the self-inflicted hits keep on comin’.

This week’s episode started with Justin Hartley‘s character returning to his high school as an alumni-award recipient. Great, right?  But the hour soon devolved into a shame spiral for the emotionally bereft Kevin, whose dependence on drugs and alcohol to numb past and current hurts led him to steal a page from a doctor’s prescription pad (!) and miss being there for his twin, Kate, as she underwent a terrible loss. (For the full story, make sure to read our episode recap here.)

“You don’t look at someone like Kevin and say, ‘Yeah, that guy is going to turn into a helpless, pathetic person,’” Hartley tells TVLine. “But if you look at it, you dissect it and you peel back a lot of layers, you can see it is the perfect storm, and the perfect person that something like that would happen to. Because he just wants to be accepted… and for someone to say, ‘You’re good’ and give him a hug, and he’s not getting it.”

In the wake of this week’s hour — the first of a trio of episodes focusing on The Big Three as individuals (next week is Kate’s) — we chatted with Hartley about that daunting gridiron monologue, the opportunity to finally work opposite his TV dad and the “really not great moments for Kevin” that lie ahead.

This Is Us Justin Hartley Interview Season 2 Episode 8TVLINE|I feel a little guilty, because when we talked before the show premiered, I mocked Kevin’s “problems” a little: Kate had the weight stuff, and Randall was searching for his birth father, but Kevin just seemed like an actor who was lacking purpose. And it turns out that he’s got just as big an issue, if not bigger, as the other two. Talk to me about his trajectory.
That was the whole thing from the beginning: I don’t think it was clear that he was going to go down this particular path, but you started to see that that’s what Jack’s issue was, and that’s when I was like, “OK, that’s where he’s going to go.” He’s a guy who can’t deal with his father’s death. Doesn’t want to talk about it. Deals with it by not talking about it, which is always great, right? Bottle it up inside. That’s healthy. But he doesn’t have the tools to deal with it. He’s shut it out.

It’s a massive part of his life. It’s not like an ex-girlfriend that he dated for a couple of months and he’s like, “I’m going to pretend I never met her.” This was his father. And they didn’t always have the greatest relationship. In him always wanting to make his father proud and be the best at everything, and have his father be, “Oh wow, you’re so amazing,” he wanted to be like his father his whole life until he realized his father was not who he thought he was. And then he became kind of embarrassed by him. Then he felt guilty for being embarrassed by him. And then he gets older and he’s carrying that guilt around, like “Why couldn’t I have been there for my dad?” He lost him, and there’s no closure. The whole thing is troubling, it’s like the perfect storm.

TVLINE|Throughout the episode, I kept waiting for Kevin to hit rock bottom… but he doesn’t hit it in this episode. There’s still a lot of bad stuff that could happen to him, and a lot of bad decisions he could make, before he’s at his lowest. What can you tell me about where he’s headed, emotionally, after this?
Yeah. It’s in Kevin’s DNA to try to either bury things or deal with them on his own, or not talk about then, or make light of situations that are actually very serious. It’s not in his DNA to seek help. Unfortunately, this kind of thing, you can’t do it on your own. It’s impossible. You don’t hear a lot of stories, like, “I had this drug addiction, I just went into a room, and I kicked it.” That’s not gonna work. He’s going to his brother for help, because he knows Randall will help him or listen to him at least. He’ll do whatever he needs to do to help him… But he gets hit with this information [about Kate’s miscarriage], and he realizes this is not the time to talk about [his problem]… Like I said, it’s in his DNA to try to handle things on his own and to bottle things up, and that’s what he tries to do again. Without giving away storyline, I can just tell you: That is not a good way to solve things. Worse things will happen if you do that. So we’re going to see some really not great moments for Kevin.

TVLINE|Given the bond between Kevin and Kate, it seems like her loss could push him farther down his spiral. What can you tell me about that?
He’s just feeling horrible and hating himself and feeling depressed. This is his twin sister. They’ve spent their whole lives together. She goes through this moment, which is the toughest moment of her life, and he is M.I.A. Not answering her calls. It’s the worst thing in the world. The one time he should’ve been there, and he’s not there. There are parallels between that and his father’s death. All that guilt that he carries just pushes him over the edge.

TVLINE|I loved seeing you and Milo Ventimiglia have a scene together.
Me, too!

TVLINE|That was your first, right?
That’s the first time I’ve ever worked with Milo, ever, in my life. It was great. I’ve been talking about it for a while… Because I get to work with Mandy, but I don’t get to work with Milo. And then they figured out a way. I don’t think they did it just so we could work together — I don’t know, maybe they did — but it wasn’t this excuse to work together. It actually made sense in the scene and told a great story.

This Is Us Justin Hartley Interview Season 2 Episode 8TVLINE|Talk to me a little bit about that scene on the football field. That monologue seems like it could be a tricky thing to pull off. How did you approach it?
The first time I read it, I thought, “This is going to be difficult to pull off.” …Here’s this guy who’s talking about all of his accolades and all of his failures, and then feeling bad about the fact that he keeps getting dealt aces over and over again. When he f—ks up, he doesn’t get punished for it. He gets rewarded for it, over and over and over again… People keep making excuses for it. I’m like, “How am I going to make anyone feel bad for this guy?” That was my very first reaction when I read it. Like, “Aw, crap.” [Laughs] It’s extremely well written, it’s beautiful, but that’s a task right there. That’s a chore. Then I read it eight or none thousand more times, and I don’t know. If that’s his truth, if that’s his life, if that’s what he really believes, then who can tell him he doesn’t believe it? … Yeah, that’s a tricky one. [Laughs] I got some help from great directing, great writing, great cinematography, great location and a great crew. I got a lot of help with that one. I think we pulled it off.

TVLINE|Do you remember how many takes it took you to nail it?
One.

TVLINE|What?!
Yeah, we did one. [Laughs] I’m just kidding! … I’d have to ask [Executive producer] Ken [Olin], I don’t remember, but I don’t think we were out there long at all. It’s one of those things where — and I don’t do this, anyway — but you don’t really come to work and try to find it. You’d better have it. Our show is like that. You should have it at home. Don’t come to work and try to figure it out. I think that would get exposed on our show rather quickly, if you tried to do that.

TVLINE | Ken was directing the episode.
Thank god. He’s great. He’s there a lot. He’s an actor’s director. He’ll let you do your own thing. He’s not afraid to say, “Let’s do it your way.” He’s not afraid to say, “I’ve got an idea. Let’s do this” or “Have you thought about this?” We’re two totally different people and the way we approach things is different, but for whatever reason, it works really well. I really enjoy having him there.

TVLINE|Are you in the next two episodes?
I think so, yeah. Maybe a tick in each one. The storyline, the three-part whatever we’re doing, it takes place at the same time… I’m in at least one of them.

England news: Dylan Hartley, Nathan Hughes, Joe Marler all face bans https://briefnews.eu/england-news-dylan-hartley-nathan-hughes-joe-marler-all-face-bans/ https://briefnews.eu/england-news-dylan-hartley-nathan-hughes-joe-marler-all-face-bans/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 03:02:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/england-news-dylan-hartley-nathan-hughes-joe-marler-all-face-bans/

The trio face disciplinary hearings in London tomorrow with their inclusion in Eddie Jones’s November squad, which is announced the following morning, hanging in the balance.

Hartley has been charged with striking Clermont prop Rabah Slimani after a swinging arm ruck clearout in Northampton’s Champions Cup defeat on Saturday.

Referee Ben Whitehouse ruled that the incident, which left Slimani with a bleeding nose, was “reckless but not intentional” and issued a yellow card at the time, but citing commissioner Douglas Hunter, from Scotland, disagreed yesterday, viewing it worthy of a red.

The debate has been raging over whether Hartley or Lions hooker Jamie George should start for England this autumn. If Hartley is found guilty and suspended, it could be settled by default.

The recommended low entry sanction for this type of offence is two weeks but Hartley’s previous convictions are so plentiful that he is unlikely to be treated leniently should the citing be upheld. He has accrued 60 weeks of bans in his career.

Marler, who also has disciplinary form, has been charged over the use of an elbow to the head of Wasps’ Will Rowlands on Sunday.

The incident, which occurred as Marler tried to free himself from the grasp of Rowlands, brought the Harlequins prop a yellow card.

No8 Hughes was cited for a dangerous tackle on Marcus Smith which went unpunished in a tempestuous match which also saw Quins flanker Dave Ward cited for a head butt on Thomas Young.

Blob Munster yesterday confirmed that Ireland wing Simon Zebo is leaving at the end of the season. He is expected to join Racing 92.

The Flash Season 4: Hartley Sawyer to Play Stretchy Superhero Elongated Man https://briefnews.eu/the-flash-season-4-hartley-sawyer-to-play-stretchy-superhero-elongated-man/ https://briefnews.eu/the-flash-season-4-hartley-sawyer-to-play-stretchy-superhero-elongated-man/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 21:10:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-flash-season-4-hartley-sawyer-to-play-stretchy-superhero-elongated-man/

Barry Allen is getting a looooong helping hand.

The Flash has tapped Hartley Sawyer (The Young and the Restless) to recur as Ralph Dibny (aka Elongated Man) during Season 4, TVLine has learned.

Dibny is described as “a fast-talking private investigator with investigative skills that rival those of Batman.” Oh, and he can stretch his body to any shape or form. After discovering his new abilities, Dibny uses his superpower to help Team Flash solve one of Central City’s greatest mysteries.

In the DC Comics canon, Ralph Dibny obtained his elasticity from “gingo” fruit extract, which activated a latent metahuman gene. He went on to become a trusted ally of Barry Allen and a member of the Justice League of America.

In less friendly casting news, it was announced during San Diego Comic-Con that Neil Sandilands (aka The 100′s Titus) will portray Season 4’s new Big Bad, The Thinker. Danny Trejo (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, Sons of Anarchy), meanwhile, will play Earth-19 bounty hunter Gypsy’s imposing father, Breacher.

In addition to his run as The Young and the Restless‘ Kyle Abbott, Sawyer’s TV credits include GCB, Glory Daze and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. He also recently starred in the CW Seed web series Saving the Human Race.

The Flash Season 4 premieres Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c on The CW.

Dylan Hartley to remain as England captain regardless of British Lions future https://briefnews.eu/dylan-hartley-to-remain-as-england-captain-regardless-of-british-lions-future/ https://briefnews.eu/dylan-hartley-to-remain-as-england-captain-regardless-of-british-lions-future/#respond Tue, 21 Mar 2017 01:41:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dylan-hartley-to-remain-as-england-captain-regardless-of-british-lions-future/

The Northampton hooker was yesterday given a vote of confidence by England coach Eddie Jones despite being substituted early in the second half again during the failed Grand Slam bid in Ireland.

Jones would not comment on whether Hartley’s playing form was worthy of Lions selection but believes his leadership makes him untouchable for England at present.

“Dylan is an outstanding captain for us. There’s no reason why he won’t continue to do a super job,” said Jones.

“It’s like when Mike Brearley captained the England cricket team; everyone questioned him, then he won the Ashes and no one questioned him.”

Jones will reassess the captaincy after the November internationals but thinks Hartley, who turns 31 on Friday, can still perform to the standards required to lead England at Japan 2019.

“There’s three parts in a World Cup project – the first two years, the second two years, and the three months leading into the cup. We don’t have to make decisions on players until at least the end of the first two-year project,” said Jones.

‘He was better than he was in November and there’s no reason why, the next time he comes in, he can’t be better than he was this time.”
