ABC has removed Chris Harrison as the host of the forthcoming season of The Bachelorette, the network announced Friday night.

“Chris Harrison will not be hosting the next season of The Bachelorette,” ABC said in a joint statement with Warner Horizon. “We support Chris in the work that he is committed to doing. In his absence, former Bachelorettes Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe will support the new Bachelorette through next season.

“As we continue the dialogue around achieving greater equity and inclusion within The Bachelor franchise, we are dedicated to improving the BIPOC representation of our crew, including among the executive producer ranks,” the statement continued. “These are important steps in effecting fundamental change so that our franchise is a celebration of love that is reflective of our world.”

The kerfuffle involving Harrison erupted last month when photos surfaced of current Bachelor contestant Rachael Kirkconnell attending a 2018 Antebellum party, a gathering that romanticizes the pre-Civil War South and reinforces racist stereotypes from that time. While many criticized Kirkconnell’s behavior, Harrison defended her in an Extra interview with Rachel Lindsay — The Bachelorette‘s first-ever Black lead — and denounced the “cancel culture” that he felt had targeted her.

Harrison later apologized for “wrongly speaking in a manner that perpetuates racism” and opted to take “a period of time” away from ABC’s dating series, and that includes sitting out the upcoming After the Final Rose finale special on March 15, with former NFL player Emmanuel Acho filling in as host instead.

In a Good Morning America interview last week, Harrison once again fessed up to his mistakes. “I am an imperfect man,” he said. “I made a mistake, and I own that. I believe that mistake doesn’t reflect who I am or what I stand for. I am committed to the progress — not just for myself, but also for the franchise.”

Harrison told GMA that he was working with a race educator and strategist, along with faith leaders and scholars like Georgetown University sociology professor Dr. Michael Eric Dyson.

“I plan to be back, and I want to be back,” he said of his possible return to the franchise down the line. “This interview is not the finish line. There is much more work to be done, and I am excited to be a part of that change.”

It will be Emmanuel Acho, and not Chris Harrison, who puts the Bachelor cast in the hot seat during the show’s After the Final Rose special.

Acho, a former NFL linebacker and Fox Sports analyst, will officially replace Harrison as host of the traditional finale special, in which leading man Matt James and his chosen winner will return to discuss the season and their current relationship status, reports our sister site Deadline. The two-hour Season 25 finale is set to air Monday, March 15 at 8/7c, with the Final Rose special airing immediately after.

“It’s both an honor and privilege to be hosting After the Final Rose,” Acho said in a statement. “This is an incredibly pivotal episode on one of the most storied shows in television history.”

Harrison will be absent from the special after choosing to take a “period of time” away from the franchise, following his controversial defense of current Bachelor contestant Rachael Kirkconnell. When photos surfaced of Kirkconnell attending an Antebellum party — a problematic gathering that celebrates the pre-Civil War South and reinforces racist imagery from that time — Harrison defended her in an Extra interview conducted by Rachel Lindsay, The Bachelorette‘s first-ever Black lead. Despite Lindsay’s attempts to explain why Kirkconnell’s actions were indefensible, Harrison decried “cancel culture” and suggested that Kirkconnell’s attendance at the party simply looks worse through a present-day lens.

The host later apologized for “wrongly speaking in a manner that perpetuates racism,” and three days later, he announced he would step aside from the franchise, including the upcoming Final Rose special. “The historic season of The Bachelor should not be marred or overshadowed by my mistakes or diminished by my actions,” Harrison wrote at the time. “I am dedicated to getting educated on a more profound and productive level than ever before.”

Beyond sitting out this finale special, Harrison’s future with the franchise has yet to be determined.

Bachelor’s Chris Harrison Apologizes for ‘Perpetuating Racism’ in Interview About Contestant’s Past Photos https://briefnews.eu/bachelors-chris-harrison-apologizes-for-perpetuating-racism-in-interview-about-contestants-past-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/bachelors-chris-harrison-apologizes-for-perpetuating-racism-in-interview-about-contestants-past-photos/#respond Thu, 11 Feb 2021 12:57:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bachelors-chris-harrison-apologizes-for-perpetuating-racism-in-interview-about-contestants-past-photos/

Chris Harrison, who has hosted The Bachelor for 25 seasons, is used to putting the reality show’s stars and contestants in the hot seat. But thanks to some comments he made in a recent interview with Rachel Lindsay, the franchise’s first Black Bachelorette, now he is feeling the heat of public opinion and apologizing.

“To my Bachelor Nation family — I will always own a mistake when I make one, so I am here to extend a sincere apology,” Harrison said in a tweet Wednesday night. “While I do not speak for Rachael Kirkconnell, my intentions were simply to ask for grace in offering her an opportunity to speak on her own behalf. What I now realize I have done is cause harm by wrongly speaking in a manner that perpetuates racism and for that I am so deeply sorry.”

In case you missed the offense, Harrison opened his mouth and inserted his foot during a recent Extra interview that Lindsay hosted. During the segment, Lindsay and Harrison discussed photos of Season 25 contestant Kirkconnell — currently vying for the heart of Matt James, the franchise’s first Black Bachelor — attending an Antebellum party three years ago. She has since taken the photos off of social media and disabled the comments option. Because of the painful and racist history the pre-Civil War Antebellum South and slavery triggers, many have shunned romanticizing the era and its images.

Instead of saying something about the problematic nature that Kirkconnell’s past racial insensitivities create, Harrison defended her reputation and lambasted what he called “cancel culture.”

“This ‘judge, jury, executioner’ thing where people are just tearing this girl’s life apart and diving into her parents’ voting record … it’s unbelievably alarming to watch this,” a visibly frustrated Harrison told Lindsay. “You know, I saw a picture of her at a sorority show five years ago, and that’s it.”

But Lindsay didn’t let Harrison or Kirkconnell shirk their accountability that easily: “Well, the picture was from 2018 at an old South/Antebellum party, so that’s not a good look.”

Harrison then questioned Lindsay if cancel culture made Kirkconnell’s actions unacceptable in 2018 or now, and Lindsay, who used to be an attorney, stood her ground.

“It’s not a good look ever,” she said, before emphasizing the slavery component in regards to being Black. “She’s celebrating the old South. If I went to that party, what would I represent?”

However, Harrison never conceded his point, and fans of The Bachelor didn’t appreciate his cultural obtuseness.

“We can leave grace and space for learning while still demanding accountability,” tweeted Huffington Post reporter Emma Gray. “I feel like [Chris Harrison] expresses more empathy for people who romanticize the confederacy than people who are harmed by white supremacy in this clip. So disappointing.”

Dan Stevens Hears ‘The Call of the Wild’ with Harrison Ford https://briefnews.eu/dan-stevens-hears-the-call-of-the-wild-with-harrison-ford/ https://briefnews.eu/dan-stevens-hears-the-call-of-the-wild-with-harrison-ford/#respond Thu, 26 Jul 2018 10:29:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dan-stevens-hears-the-call-of-the-wild-with-harrison-ford/ The Call of the Wild Movie Cast - Dan Stevens

While fans are waiting for Disney and Lucasfilm to assemble all the moving pieces to get Indiana Jones 5 off the ground, Harrison Ford is heading off on another adventure in the Alaskan wilderness. Now, he’ll be joined by an actor who would actually make one hell of an Indiana Jones replacement.

Dan Stevens has taken an eclectic line-up of roles from a lawyer on Downton Abbey to a goofy Sir Lancelot in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and from a deadly houseguest named “David” in The Guest to the psychic mutant David in Legion. Now he’ll be taking a significant role in the adaptation of Jack London’s classic canine wilderness survival story The Call of the Wild.

For those who may not be familiar with The Call of the Wild, the story follows a half St. Bernard and half sheepdog named Buck who is living a comfortable life on a judge’s estate in the Santa Clara Valley of California. But his life is thrown into upheaval when men discover gold in the Klondike region of Canada and a great demand arises for strong dogs to pull sleds. Buck ends up kidnapped by a gardener and sold to dog traders, sending him on a dangerous journey through the Alaskan wilderness and a series of abusive owners, taking him away from civilization and turning him into a dog of the wild.

Variety has word on Dan Stevens joining The Call of the Wild movie cast, though it’s not clear what role he will have in the film. However, the best bet might be one of the three American gold hunters who acquire Buck and some other sled dogs from two mail carriers working for the Canadian government. Those characters have a significant role, and having Dan Stevens play the leader of the three, who plays an integral part in the progression of Buck’s transformation into a wild dog, would make sense.

We already know Harrison Ford is playing John Thornton, a gold prospector who becomes the only man in The Call of the Wild that Buck remains loyal to. But otherwise, the cast still needs to be filled out. Of course, the real star of the movie is the dog who will play Buck, and he better get top billing on the poster when this movie comes out.

There have been a lot of bad movies centered around dogs, but this one sounds like it could actually be good. Jack London’s novel (which was originally a serial) is a classic for a reason, and this book is undoubtedly a page-turning adventure that will keep audiences engaged. Of course, it helps that a good boy is at the center of the story too.

Animation director Chris Sanders (The Croods, How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch) is making the jump to live-action as the director of the film. He’ll be working from a script by Michael Green (Logan). While there will be some on-location shooting done in California, there will also be plenty of time spent on sound stages where visual effects will be used to create the dog-sled sequences. That includes having Fox VFX Lab (formerly known as Technoprops, founded by Jungle Book and Avatar effects master Glenn Derry) bringing the dogs to life. But hopefully there are some real dogs used in the movie too.

Harrison Ford Didn’t Care About ‘Star Wars’ – And That’s Why His Han Solo Was So Magical https://briefnews.eu/harrison-ford-didnt-care-about-star-wars-and-thats-why-his-han-solo-was-so-magical/ https://briefnews.eu/harrison-ford-didnt-care-about-star-wars-and-thats-why-his-han-solo-was-so-magical/#respond Fri, 25 May 2018 18:02:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/harrison-ford-didnt-care-about-star-wars-and-thats-why-his-han-solo-was-so-magical/

Han Solo is the best human character in the Star Wars cinematic franchise, as played by someone who didn’t seem to care much about the vagaries of the series.

This is the inherent paradox of the character brought to life by Harrison Ford, in a genuinely star-making performance. Before Star Wars, Ford had appeared in a few films, including The Conversation and American Graffiti. However, Han Solo was his breakout role and was at his best in the first film, even if Ford couldn’t have cared less about the science-fiction trappings of the world he was occupying.

This week heralds not only the 35th anniversary of the last original-trilogy film in the series, Return of the Jedi, but the return of Han Solo to the big screen in Solo: A Star Wars Story; each of these films, in their own way, proved that lightning could never strike twice.

Solo A Star Wars Story reviews

A New Solo

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a decent enough action-adventure, as long as you completely forget that Alden Ehrenreich is playing a young version of Harrison Ford’s iconic Millennium Falcon pilot. It’s not so much that Ehrenreich is bad in the film — the oft-repeated story last year that Lucasfilm brought in an acting coach for him says less about his talent, and more that replicating Ford’s work is nearly impossible. Anyone who saw Ehrenreich in Hail, Caesar! knows that he’s a talented actor with solid comic timing, but duplicating Harrison Ford’s work…well, would that it were so simple. It’s one thing that Ehrenreich isn’t as tall as Ford; that would be a reasonable hurdle to overcome. But too often, this new young Han Solo seems upbeat. Enthusiastic. Excited.

Watching Harrison Ford in the original Star Wars trilogy does not bring to mind the adjectives “upbeat,” “enthusiastic,” or “excited.” One of the most amazing magic tricks ever pulled off in a movie is that a fairly unamused, uninterested actor was able to turn that visible disinterest into a great movie character. From the interviews he’s given over the years, it’s safe to suggest that Harrison Ford could not have cared less about the inner workings of the Star Wars franchise if he tried. At least in the first film in the franchise, his dismissive attitude feels completely in line with the cocksure and arrogant Han Solo. It’s not that Alden Ehrenreich fails at displaying such a seen-it-all attitude in Solo; it’s that the character as written seems weirdly divorced from the Han Solo we’ve known for so long.

Any prequel can try to recontextualize characters or events that the audience is familiar with, but there’s typically a sense that when that story ends, it will lead directly to the story we already know. That’s not the case with Solo; the end of the new film hints at (of course) a possible sequel, but even that sequel doesn’t seem like it would be covering too much unfamiliar or new ground. Most of what we know about Han Solo when he’s introduced in the Mos Eisley cantina in the 1977 film is established at the end of Solo. (Spoilers incoming for the ret of this paragraph.) He’s won the Millennium Falcon from a not-too-thrilled Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover, whose impersonation of Billy Dee Williams is the best part of the film), he’s best friends with Chewbacca, and he’s no longer involved with his old girlfriend Qi’Ra (Emilia Clarke), thus making him single again. What’s more, the story ends with him and Chewie heading off to Tattooine to meet up with a well-known, fearsome gangster in the hopes of finding work.

Largely speaking, aside from maybe finding out why Greedo doesn’t like Han that much and watching Han interact with a slightly younger Jabba the Hutt, the Han we know at the end of Solo ought to be the Han we meet in Star Wars. Are you curious to find out what the Kessel Run was all about? This movie answers your question. How about those infamous dice that Han was holding onto in the original films, all the way into The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi? Covered. And what’s the deal with Han’s last name? (The answer to this question results in the worst scene in any of the new Star Wars films.) It’s hard to imagine Harrison Ford’s performance breaking out quite so much if it had been more bogged down in character details like this.

Think of this moment from NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien, in which one of Conan’s staffers asks Ford a question about the Millennium Falcon. Ford’s response may have been part of a scripted bit, but it’s awfully easy to imagine that’s his real, genuine answer after spending too much time with Han Solo in his head.

Han Solo Director Replacement

How Disinterest Curdled into Disillusionment

Ford’s disillusionment with Han Solo was perhaps at its peak when Return of the Jedi came out. He’d spent a long time trying to convince George Lucas that Han shouldn’t come back from being frozen in carbonite. As has been discussed in official behind-the-scenes documentaries, Ford (who wasn’t originally signed to the third film, and whose star rose even higher after Raiders of the Lost Ark) thought it was most appropriate for Han to die in a self-sacrificial moment. Though one of the film’s writers, Lawrence Kasdan (who ended up co-writing Solo with his son Jon), initially agreed, Lucas refused.

So, in some ways, Return of the Jedi feels like a flip side of how Ford appears in the original Star Wars: in both films, he seems fully uninterested in the character, but his discomfort is much more visible when interacting with Ewoks. In the latter case, that disinterest translated into…well, disinterest. The fact that Harrison Ford doesn’t care about the first Star Wars is weirdly endearing. The fact that he’s clearly not into the twists and turns of Return of the Jedi only speaks to the sense that it’s a slight step down from the other two films in the series. The Empire Strikes Back humanizes Han through his star-crossed romance with Leia, whereas Return of the Jedi just turns Han into a caricature of himself.

Last week at the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story there was no sign of Harrison Ford. Since the actor was finally given the opportunity to walk away from Star Wars after the death of Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you can hardly blame him for wanting to stay away from the hordes of fans who go crazy whenever he shows up. Plus, he probably wanted to let the film’s star Alden Ehrenreich have the spotlight as the charming smuggler.

For any fans thinking that Harrison Ford’s absence was a little worrisome, we have some good news. The original Han Solo caught the young Han Solo off guard during a recent on camera interview when Harrison Ford surprised Alden Ehrenreich in the middle of an on-camera interview. You can check out the cool reunion of the two actors in a video below.

Harrison Ford Surprises Alden Ehrenreich

Not only did Harrison Ford make a surprise appearance during this interview, making the two a Han Duo (I’m so sorry, but I’m not sorry), but he gave the ultimate compliment to Alden Ehrenreich’s performance while praising the movie. Ford said:

“I just thought it was spectacular. And I just thought he was so smart about what he did and how he did it. I couldn’t be happier.”

Hopefully that will help quell some of the worries that some Star Wars fans still have about Han Solo’s origin story. And unlike some publicized moments from late night television and whatnot, Ford’s praise for both the movie and Ehrenreich actually seems genuine.

This isn’t the first time Alden Ehrenreich and Harrison Ford have met, but it is the first time they’ve seen each other since their original meeting. The two were spotted having lunch sometime before production on Solo: A Star Wars Story began, and Ford had a role as an advisor behind the scenes as well. You can read more about all of that over here.

Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters on May 25, 2018.

Harrison Ford is about ready to hang up his fedora for good. The actor will play Indiana Jones again in Indiana Jones 5, but according to Steven Spielberg, Indy 5 will be Ford’s last time cracking the whip. Spielberg doesn’t rule out future Indiana Jones movies, though, and even weighs in on a possible female take on the character.

The days of Harrison Ford playing Indiana Jones are numbered. The actor has been playing Indy on and off again for almost 40 years, but, according to Steven Spielberg, Ford’s next take on the character will be his last. Speaking with The Sun, Spielberg said, “This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure, but it will certainly continue after that.”

This isn’t the most shocking news. Ford is getting up there in age – he’s 75 now, and he’ll be 76 when Indiana Jones 5 starts shooting in 2019. Still, Ford hanging up Indy’s fedora will signify the end of an era. As Spielberg himself says, there will surely be more Indiana Jones films in the future. There were even rumors that the series would be rebooted with Chris Pratt.

Spielberg himself weighed in on a possible female replacement for Ford. “We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan. And there would be nothing wrong with that.” Of course, Jones is the character’s last name, so I’m not sure why you’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan…but maybe Spielberg is just joking. Personally, I’d be perfectly fine with a female Indiana Jones, but I’m sure someone, somewhere, on the internet will have a problem with this. Let’s cross that bridge when and if we get to it.

In the past, Ford said he would return to the Indiana Jones role one more time under two conditions: Spielberg had to return, and the script had to be good. “I’ve always thought there was an opportunity to do another,” Ford said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “But I didn’t want to do it without Steven [Spielberg]. And I didn’t want to do it without a really good script. And happily we’re working on both. Steven is developing a script now that I think we’re going to be very happy with.”

Indiana Jones fans were not very pleased with the previous Indy film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Perhaps this final Harrison Ford Indiana Jones film will remedy things, and be the perfect opportunity to let Ford go out on a high note.

Harrison Ford, the original Han Solo, served as a covert technical advisor on Solo: A Star Wars Story. While it’s easy to assume that the frequently gruff Ford wouldn’t have much interest in yet another Star Wars movie, reports indicate he offered some sage advice about one of his most famous characters. More on the Solo Harrison Ford advice below.

You might recall this photo that popped up on Twitter last year. Yep, a blurry image of Harrison Ford having lunch with Solo: A Star Wars story star Alden Ehrenreich.

I had assumed that once Harrison Ford cashed his check for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he was done with the Star Wars franchise. Ford delivered a genuinely touching final performance as Han Solo in the sequel, but he’s always been slightly curmudgeon-y about the entire franchise. In other words, it seemed safe to say that Ford would probably not have any involvement with the young Han Solo film. When I saw the photo above, I thought Ford likely offered some blunt, no-nonsense advice to Ehrenreich, and then went his separate way. But EW reports otherwise.

Per their story, not only did Ford offer advice to Ehrenreich, he also served as a “covert advisor” on the upcoming Ron Howard-directed Star Wars film. EW says Ford “kept a respectful distance,” but that he also provided “vital insights into the character he has lived with, sometimes uncomfortably, for four decades.” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirms she sent Ford a copy of the script and that he approved of it. Kennedy added:

“What [Ford] did so beautifully for Alden was he talked a lot about what he remembered when he first read Star Wars, and what George had done with Han. Who the character was and the conversations he had for so many years with George about how that character developed…He gave Alden that kind of insight which was invaluable. There were several times in the course of making the movie where Alden would actually recount some of the things that Harrison had pointed out. I think that was really, really helpful to him.”

Ron Howard also sought out Ford’s advice when he took over the film after original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired. Howard says Ford talked about Han’s perpetual loneliness:

“Harrison’s a very thoughtful actor and an artist, and I wanted to know what he learned about the character…He said that Han is always torn between that sense that he was, in a way, an orphan, and therefore both yearned for connection with people and struggled with it at the same time. I thought that was pretty interesting.”

As for the above lunch meeting image, Ehrenreich provides some detail in a separate interview:

“He said a great thing when I met him. ‘Tell them I told you everything you needed to know, and that you can’t tell anyone.’…I wanted to meet him because I just felt generally it wouldn’t be right to do the movie without some kind of contact with him, and I’m really glad I did. He was very, very supportive. And it’s just cool to have lunch with Harrison Ford.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story opens May 25, 2018.

Indiana Jones 5: EXCITING update on Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford's new movie https://briefnews.eu/indiana-jones-5-exciting-update-on-steven-spielberg-and-harrison-fords-new-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/indiana-jones-5-exciting-update-on-steven-spielberg-and-harrison-fords-new-movie/#respond Tue, 30 Jan 2018 13:27:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/indiana-jones-5-exciting-update-on-steven-spielberg-and-harrison-fords-new-movie/

It’s been 10 years since the last Indiana Jones movie, the controversial fourth entry, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Rumours have been circulating for a while, and confirmed by Ford and Spielberg, that Indiana Jones 5 isn’t far off.

The acclaimed filmmaker has a number of projects in the running, including a West Side Story remake.

However, sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that Spielberg plans to shoot Indiana Jones 5 in 2019, for a 2020 release.

This means Ford will be almost 80-years-old when the fifth Indiana Jones movie hits cinemas.

With this in mind, and the fact that the last film was set in 1957, presumably we could see a 1969 setting – the year of the moon landing.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had aliens involved, (although a lot of fans disliked this element of the film) so maybe the plot could have something to do with that.

The producer replied: “[Laughs] “I’ll make sure to talk to David about that.

“David Koepp [who wrote the fourth film] is writing the script and…it’s very secretive.”

Indiana Jones 5 will be released in UK cinemas on July 10, 2020.

Phil Harrison followed up almost two decades as an executive for both Sony and Microsoft as an investor in computer and video game companies. But he’s moving back to the tech world with a new role as Vice President and GM of Google, Harrison announced on Twitter.

Most of his career has been involved with production or oversight of gaming platforms. Starting in 1992, Harrison spent 15 years working for Sony, some of it heavily involved with the PlayStation family in regional and global executive positions. His assurance that the PS3’s holistic platform would make the PC obsolete didn’t pan out, but he stayed in gaming after leaving Sony, heading Atari for a year before stepping down and joining Microsoft in 2012 to become lead for Xbox in Europe. It’s unclear what area Harrison will oversee at Google, but given his investments in VR and AR companies, it’s possible he will be involved with projects in those or other gaming fields at the tech giant (we’ve reached out for comment).
