The post-Leslie Jones era of Saturday Night Live kicked off this weekend with four-time host Woody Harrelson and the return of a famous alumna.

The Season 45 premiere began with a toothless impeachment-themed sketch. That was followed by a lackluster opening monologue that painted Harrelson as a so-called fashionista. Thankfully, the episode found its footing — and gave at least one new cast member a chance to shine — after the first commercial break, when the show returned with a cameo-filled debate parody that really, really should have served as the cold open.

Not mentioned during the season opener was Shane Gillis, the almost-cast member who was fired over racist and homophobic remarks and then threw shade at the sketch-comedy series by saying he was “always more of a MADtv guy anyway.” The episode also lacked in Pete Davidson; the longtime cast member did not appear in a single sketch, and was not there for the goodnights. Busy with The Suicide Squad…?

BEST: DNC TOWN HALL
Far superior to the cold open, though not quite a home run. Bowen Yang’s Andrew Yang impression was serviceable, but fleeting. And while Maya Rudolph nailed Kamala Harris’ mannerisms, the runner about Harris leading her own Rizzoli & Isles-esque TV show went to the well maybe once too often. Larry David got the single best line, when Bernie Sanders described turning on his TV set (“If I accidentally hit ‘Input,’ that’s a whole day!”), but it was new cast member Chloe Fineman who stole the sketch during her all-too-brief appearance as an “astral projection” of wackadoo candidate Marianne Williamson.

BEST: APPLE-PICKING AD
Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon played perfectly off each other as the very single sisters who maintain the Upstate tourist trap, where “for just $ 45, you can bring home $ 10 worth of apples.” The tourist testimonials by Yang, Melissa Villaseñor and Chris Redd were spot-on, and Harrelson was a hoot as Hank, the troubled farmhand who came with the land.

HONORABLE MENTION: LOCKER ROOM
Heidi Gardner’s first showcase as a full-time cast member wasn’t great, but she was great in it. Her performance as the football coach’s much younger wife (“Class of 2018!”) was solid, and her delivery helped sell some of the not-so-funny jokes about his mutilated genitals.

WORST: INSIDE THE BELTWAY
Technical difficulties elevate this one to “best-worst” status. Aidy Bryant breaking character after the stagehand accidentally steps into frame was, in a word, perfect. And I’m pretty sure it was Aidy, not her character, telling them to “go to commercial.” The myriad gaffes took an otherwise forgettable satire of Sunday-morning political punditry and turned it into a memorable disaster.

WORST: ROADSIDE MUSEUM
We all knew where this one was going, and that’s half the fun. But everyone involved was too low energy. In order to sell such a ridiculous, one-joke premise, the performances needed to be heightened; Harrelson’s character, in particular, should have had a much bigger reaction to the sketch’s inevitable climax. Everyone was asleep at the wheel, and then it just… ended.

If the phrase “Woody Harrelson as Archie Bunker” is at all up your alley, you’ve come to the right place. ABC is staging one-night-only revivals of two iconic Norman Lear sitcoms, All in the Family and The Jeffersons, Jimmy Kimmel announced during his show on Thursday.

Airing Wednesday, May 22 at 8/7c, the 90-minute live event stars Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei as All in the Family‘s Archie and Edith Bunker (originally played by Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton), along with Ellie Kemper as Gloria Stivic (originally played by Sally Struthers).

The Jeffersons‘ portion of the special features Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes as George and Louise Jefferson (originally played by Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford), plus Will Ferrell as Tom Willis (originally played by Franklin Cover) and Justina Machado as Florence Johnston (originally played by Marla Gibbs).

Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and The Jeffersons will be hosted by Lear and Kimmel, and directed by the legendary James Burrows. Executive producers include Ferrell, Brent Miller, Adam McKay and Justin Theroux.

“They have said over and over again that these two shows were meant for the ’70s and would not work today. We disagree with them and are here to prove, with two great casts depicting All in the Family and The Jeffersons, the timelessness of human nature,” Lear said in a statement. “I cannot wait to see what these glorious performers make in our time of these indelible characters, and I couldn’t be more grateful for Jimmy Kimmel, Sony and ABC for their collective willingness to conceive and pursue this never-been-done-before event.”

‘Shock And Awe’ Trailer: Woody Harrelson and James Marsden Investigate the Iraq War https://briefnews.eu/shock-and-awe-trailer-woody-harrelson-and-james-marsden-investigate-the-iraq-war/ https://briefnews.eu/shock-and-awe-trailer-woody-harrelson-and-james-marsden-investigate-the-iraq-war/#respond Sun, 20 May 2018 12:19:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shock-and-awe-trailer-woody-harrelson-and-james-marsden-investigate-the-iraq-war/ shock and awe trailer

In 2003, the Bush White House sold America on the Iraq War under the pretense that Iraq was harboring weapons of mass destruction. Not long after, we all learned that claim wasn’t true, but at the time, most journalists didn’t seem to realize the truth. Shock and Awe is about a two journalists who did. Watch the Shock and Awe trailer below.

Shock and Awe

The Post was the first “hero journalist” movie of the Trump era, but it won’t be the last. Rob Reiner‘s Shock and Awe looks like it wants to be the All the President’s Men of the 21st century, with a pair of journalists crusading for the truth. And even though this film is focused on the Bush administration, it’s clear that Reiner and company are more than ready to draw parallels to the current administration of Donald Trump. A scene in this trailer seems to underscore that in big, bold strokes when someone shouts, “The president is lying!”

Shock and Awe is based on the true story – although probably heavily fictionalized for the film – of journalists at the Knight Rider newspaper who were among the only reporters to “get Iraq right.” When interviewed about this subject, John Walcott, McClatchy Newspapers Washington Bureau Chief, told Huffington Post:

“Well we certainly didn’t see anyone doing the same kinds of stories, with the exception of some stories by Walter Pincus at the Washington Post, and much, much later after the Los Angeles Times got onto Curveball. But during the period when I guess, arguably, it mattered, when it could have and should have been a debate about whether to engage in this war, I think we felt that we were fairly lonely.”

Walcott added: “There wasn’t any reporting in the rest of the press corps, there was stenography. The administration would make an assertion, people would make an assertion, people would write it down as if it were true, and put it in the newspaper or on television.”

I’m sure that statement will sound familiar to anyone following politics in the year 2018. It’s almost as if we as a nation haven’t learned a damn thing or something…but I digress.

Shock and Awe has a lot of potential, and Woody Harrelson and James Marsden are both strong actors, and co-star Tommy Lee Jones is one of the best in the business. The wild card here is director Rob Reiner. I like Reiner, and he’s made a few fine films in the past. But he’s had far more misses than hits in the last few years. His most recent movie, LBJ – which also featured Harrelson and Marsden, and was written by Shock and Awe writer Joey Hartstone – was kind of terrible. That doesn’t inspire much confidence here.

Shock and Awe will play exclusively on DIRECTV from June 14 to July 11, before opening in theaters July 13, 2018.

The film is based on the true events of Knight Ridder journalists who were the only ones who “got it right” in the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq War when they questioned the true nature of the Bush White House’s justification for the conflict.

Is Woody Harrelson Carnage in ‘Venom’? A New Rumor Suggests So https://briefnews.eu/is-woody-harrelson-carnage-in-venom-a-new-rumor-suggests-so/ https://briefnews.eu/is-woody-harrelson-carnage-in-venom-a-new-rumor-suggests-so/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 10:02:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-woody-harrelson-carnage-in-venom-a-new-rumor-suggests-so/ Woody Harrelson Carnage

Is Carnage in Venom, the film featuring Tom Hardy as everyone’s favorite lethal protector? There have been rumblings that the character would pop up in the Ruben Fleischer-directed film, and now a new rumor suggests that Woody Harrelson will be playing the character. More on the Woody Harrelson Carnage rumor below.

Take this rumor with a nice heaping dose of salt, but Bleeding Cool claims to have learned that Woody Harrelson is playing Carnage in Venom. A source has told the site in “a very confirm-y way that not only is Carnage to appear in the upcoming Venom movie but, yes, he will be played by Woody Harrelson.” There was a long-running rumor that Venom cast member Riz Ahmed might be playing Carnage, but reports indicate Ahmed is actually playing a character named Dr. Carlton Drake.

Harrleson’s involvement in Venom was announced in December 2017. At the time, word had it that Harrelson was playing “a henchman of sorts” – which seems to contrast with this new report that he’s playing Carnage. In the comics, Carnage is a serial killer named Cletus Kasady, who is infected with the same sort of alien symbiote as Venom. The Carnage storyline received the video game treatment in the 1994 game Maximum Carnage, which has a pretty killer theme song.

Venom focuses on Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), the host of an alien symbiote that gives him incredible powers. In the comics, Eddie Brock/Venom was an antagonist to Spider-Man, but Spidey will likely not be appearing in this standalone film. Venom was previously brought to the big screen by Sam Raimi in Spider-Man 3.

Specific details regarding Venom are still under wraps. What we do know know is that the Venom film is inspired by two specific comic storylines: Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes. In Lethal Protector, Venom turns from regular Spider-Man protagonist into an anti-hero. Venom also teams with Spider-Man to defeat five new offspring of the Venom symbiote. In Planet of the Symbiotes, an army of symbiotes invade earth. Carnage appears in that story, which might carry over into the Venom film. I suppose the question one should ask now is, if Carnage is in Venom, how big a part will he play? Will he be the main antagonist, or is Venom setting Carnage up for a bigger appearance in a future film?

Venom, starring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate and Woody Harrelson hits theaters on October 5, 2018.

‘Venom’ Might Add Woody Harrelson To Its Already Impressive Cast https://briefnews.eu/venom-might-add-woody-harrelson-to-its-already-impressive-cast/ https://briefnews.eu/venom-might-add-woody-harrelson-to-its-already-impressive-cast/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 02:13:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/venom-might-add-woody-harrelson-to-its-already-impressive-cast/ Woody Harrelson Venom

That Venom movie that we’re still having a hard time accepting as real has already racked up a really impressive cast. And now it’s close to adding another high profile name: Woody Harrelson is in talks to co-star. Rumor has it Harrelson will play some sort of henchman in the sort-of Spider-Man spin-off. Details about this latest addition to the Venom cast are below.

Columbia Pictures’s Venom movie continues to come together nicely. Tom Hardy is in the lead, playing Spider-Man character Eddie Brock aka Venom, and the cast around him includes Jenny Slate, Michelle Williams, and maybe Riz Ahmed. Time to make room for another name: Woody Harrelson. Variety (and others) are reporting that the War for the Planet of the Apes co-star is in talks to join the superhero (or should that be supervillain?) spin-off. Details on just who Harrelson will play are currently not available, but rumor has it that he’ll be playing a “henchman.” Harrleson seems like too big an actor to play some nameless background goon, so if he is playing a henchman, I’d assume it’s a very prominent henchman.

Then again, Harrelson could be making a brief appearance as a favor to a former director. Venom is being helmed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer, and perhaps Harrelson enjoyed working with Fleischer so much he’s game to put in a quick appearance in a brief role. This is yet another big franchise for Harrelson to join, recently appearing in the latest Planet of the Apes film and having just finished shooting Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Details about this strange Venom film have been mostly vague, but we recently learned that the plot would be borrowing from the comic book runs Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes. Lethal Protector turned Venom from full-fledged bad guy into a bit of an anti-hero, and Planet of the Symbiotes involved an alien invasion storyline.

Venom, a drippy, fang-filled bruiser created in the late 1980s, is, of course, primarily known as a Spider-Man antagonist, and appeared on screen before in Sam Raimi’s often maligned Spider-Man 3. In that film, the character was transformed from his traditional form of a muscle-bound jerk into a scrawny, smarmy dweeb played by Topher Grace. Venom casting Tom Hardy as its lead suggests the film will be moving far, far away from Raimi’s interpretation. Still, this project remains rather strange. As far as we know, Spider-Man will not be appearing in the film, which begs the question: can Venom as a character work without Spider-Man? Everyone involved with this film sure as hell hopes so. No matter how Venom turns out, one thing is certain: it has a really cool cast.

Venom opens October 5, 2018.

Woody Harrelson Hypes ‘Han Solo’ Movie’s Humor, Plus The Timing Of Lord & Miller’s Firing Explained https://briefnews.eu/woody-harrelson-hypes-han-solo-movies-humor-plus-the-timing-of-lord-millers-firing-explained/ https://briefnews.eu/woody-harrelson-hypes-han-solo-movies-humor-plus-the-timing-of-lord-millers-firing-explained/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 22:18:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/woody-harrelson-hypes-han-solo-movies-humor-plus-the-timing-of-lord-millers-firing-explained/ The Empire Strikes Back - Han Solo

We knew all about the clashing of approaches between producer Kathleen Kennedy and original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller regarding Lucasfilm’s Han Solo spin-off film, but ever since Ron Howard took over the director’s chair, we’ve been wondering a lot about the film’s tone. Now, thanks to a new interview with one of its stars, we’ve learned that Solo may end up being one of the funnier Star Wars movies we’ve seen so far.

And speaking of Lord and Miller, we take a look at the Directors Guild of America rule that explains the timing of why they were fired with only three weeks left in principal photography.

Han Solo movie comedy

Woody Harrelson Says Han Solo Is A Funnier Star Wars Movie

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Woody Harrelson – who plays a criminal named Beckett who serves as a mentor to Alden Ehrenreich’s young Han Solo in the movie – was asked how the production was progressing with Howard at the helm:

“Fortunately, the Force is still very much with us. It’s great that Ron came along when he did.”

When asked about his young co-star, Harrelson praised Ehrenreich’s abilities and teased his thoughts about how the film could rank among the other Star Wars movies when all is said and done:

“He’s a great actor and a great guy, [with a] great sense of humor. I think a lot of humor comes through what he’s doing. I think it could be one of the funnier Star Wars movies.”

“One of the funnier Star Wars movies” isn’t exactly a tall bar to hurdle, so hopefully there ends up being more reason to watch this film than the possibility that it’ll be funnier than Attack of the Clones. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Harrelson has hyped this film. He previously said he felt like they were making the best Star Wars movie yet, a statement that’s especially ironic now that Lord and Miller have walked away from the production.

Why Lord and Miller Were Probably Fired At That Point During Production

And about that whole Lord and Miller fiasco: many, myself included, were wondering about the timing of their firing. Why would Lucasfilm part ways with them with only three weeks of shooting left to go? ScreenRant points us to a DGA rule in Section 7-503 of the guild’s Creative Handbook, which states:

“A Director who is replaced after directing ninety percent (90%) but less than one hundred percent (100%) of the scheduled principal photography of any motion picture shall be the Director of the film entitled to all the post-production creative rights set forth in this Article 7, unless (a) the Director was primarily responsible for causing the motion picture to be “over budget” or (b) the substituting Director was required to direct more than ten percent (10%) of all principal photography for the picture.”

“The Employer may not schedule additional photography to avoid the express intent of this provision and has the burden of proving the necessity of such additional photography.”

“A Director who has directed one hundred percent (100%) of the scheduled principal photography of a motion picture may not be replaced except for gross willful misconduct.”

Lord and Miller had directed approximately 85% of the Han Solo movie before they were let go, which makes their firing seem like a strategic play on Lucasfilm’s part to ensure that they wouldn’t have any say over what went on in post-production. It might seem harsh, but it’s a shrewd move by Kennedy and company, who have no time to waste with people who don’t conform to their vision. After all, Disney has stockholders to answer to, and I imagine hitting that release date is the most valuable thing Kennedy can do for them.

The still-untitled Han Solo film hits theaters on May 25, 2018.

Star Wars: Woody Harrelson on Alden Ehrenreich’s acting after 'unsatisfactory' rumours https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-woody-harrelson-on-alden-ehrenreichs-acting-after-unsatisfactory-rumours/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-woody-harrelson-on-alden-ehrenreichs-acting-after-unsatisfactory-rumours/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 09:47:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-woody-harrelson-on-alden-ehrenreichs-acting-after-unsatisfactory-rumours/

The legendary performer’s praise of the young hotshot comes after unconfirmed reports suggested LucasFilm bosses were “disappointed” with his performance in the prequel story, which is due out next year.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Harrelson said: “He’s a great actor and a great guy, a great sense of humour.

“I think a lot of humour comes through what he’s doing. I think it could be one of the funnier Star Wars films.”

The Han Solo film – the official title for which is still unannounced – recently also underwent a change of director, with Ron Howard installed at the helm relatively late into the filming process.

However, playing down any notion that the film will have suffered as a result, Harrelson maintained: “Fortunately the Force is still very much with us so it’s great that Ron came along when he did.”

It was around the same time as the director debacle hit the headlines that speculation over Ehrenreich’s performance also first surfaced.

A report from The Hollywood Reporter had said: “Not entirely satisfied with the performance that the directors were eliciting from Rules Don’t Apply star Alden Ehrenreich, Lucasfilm decided to bring in an acting coach.

“Hiring a coach is not unusual; hiring one that late in production is.”

Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Thandie Newton are also on board.

Before that film comes out, the next chapter in the main Star Wars saga – Episode VIII: The Last Jedi – releases in December.

The Han Solo movie is out in May 2018.

‘The Glass Castle’ Trailer: Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson Tell A Riveting True Story of an Unusual Family https://briefnews.eu/the-glass-castle-trailer-brie-larson-woody-harrelson-tell-a-riveting-true-story-of-an-unusual-family/ https://briefnews.eu/the-glass-castle-trailer-brie-larson-woody-harrelson-tell-a-riveting-true-story-of-an-unusual-family/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 18:36:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-glass-castle-trailer-brie-larson-woody-harrelson-tell-a-riveting-true-story-of-an-unusual-family/ the glass castle trailer

The Glass Castle seems like a sob story version of Captain Fantastic — except it’s based on a true story.

The adaptation of Jeannette Walls‘s powerful memoir, The Glass Castle stars a master class in Academy Award nominees and winners, with Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts heading a dysfunctional, free-wheeling family that ping-pongs between poverty and a bohemian lifestyle.

“My dad can be extremely cruel, but he dreams bigger than anyone I ever met,” Larson’s Jeannette narrates as glimpses of her unconventional childhood on the fringes of society with her eclectic parents flash throughout the trailer. She and her siblings at first adhere to their rootless lifestyle, enamored with their brilliant father (Harrelson) and their artistic mother (Watts). But the nomadic lifestyle starts to take a toll on the children, causing Larson’s Jeannette and her siblings to abandon their parents as adults and seek their escape in New York City.

The film takes place in two times — during Jeannette’s troubled childhood, and after Jeannette has moved to New York, soon followed by her parents who live in the streets and slums on the Lower East Side.

Read the official synopsis for The Glass Castle below:

“Chronicling the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family, THE GLASS CASTLE is a remarkable story of unconditional love. Oscar winner Brie Larson brings Jeannette Walls’s best-selling memoir to life as a young woman who, influenced by the joyfully wild nature of her deeply dysfunctional father (Woody Harrelson), found the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.”

I picked up a copy of The Glass Castle a year ago, unaware it would be a film headlined by Brie Larson no less, and was completely floored by the story. It reads like a sobering version of On the Road, if Kerouac and his ilk were to have children and subject them to their counterculture lifestyle. Though it seems at first idyllic and rugged, Jeannette and her siblings eventually find themselves victims of their father’s alcoholic rages and crushing poverty.

It’s not quite the tearjerking drama that the trailer makes it out to be, but a fascinating look at how a family stuck between their survivalist ideals and the realities of raising children in modern day. I worried when Captain Fantastic came out with virtually the same premise that The Glass Castle would suffer, but I like to think that the all-star cast and the strong story will pull through.

The film is based off the memoir by Jeannette Walls, who became a widely known gossip columnist in New York. The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is written by Cretton, Andrew Lanham, and Marti Noxon.

The Glass Castle hits theaters August 11.

The 2013 indie film Short Term 12 launched Brie Larson’s career in a big way, and in the relatively quick time since then, she’s starred in a major studio comedy (Trainwreck), a massive Hollywood monster movie (Kong: Skull Island), and snagged the lead role in an upcoming Marvel superhero film. And don’t forget about that Best Actress Oscar she won for her work in Room.

Things have been a lot quieter for Short Term 12’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who hasn’t directed a movie since. But he’s reunited with his old collaborator for a new movie, and the first trailer has just arrived. Check out the first trailer for The Glass Castle below.

The Glass Castle trailer

The film is based on the bestselling memoir of Jeanette Walls, who had a wildly unconventional upbringing. Her family were essentially nomads when she was a kid, with her parents trekking around the Southwest with Jeanette and her three siblings in tow. There’s a bit of a Captain Fantastic vibe here with the whole “raising your kids outside of societal norms” angle, but this is A) a true story and B) what might happen if Captain Fantastic’s story kept going for years after it ended and explored the fallout of a father who wasn’t quite as capable as Viggo Mortensen’s character.

The Glass Castle looks to be split into two time periods: one of them focuses on Larson playing an older version of Walls who has moved to the city and left her free-spirited parents behind, and the other recounts her turbulent childhood in flashbacks. Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts, and Max Greenfield co-star.

I found a lot to like in Short Term 12, which seemed like a scrappy production that provided a lot of room for its actors to tap into some heavy emotions. The movie was extremely personal for Cretton because it recounted some events he’d seen in his time working in residential foster care, and I wonder if he’ll be able to bring a similarly personal touch to different subject matter. He strikes me as an actor’s director, so we’ll see how he handles telling someone else’s story (he co-wrote this film’s script with Andrew Lanham based on Walls’ memoir) and if he can provide the perfect environment for another excellent performance from his leading lady and capture lightning in a bottle one more time.

The Glass Castle opens on August 11, 2017.

Star Wars Han Solo movie: Woody Harrelson FINALLY reveals Beckett character details https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-han-solo-movie-woody-harrelson-finally-reveals-beckett-character-details/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-han-solo-movie-woody-harrelson-finally-reveals-beckett-character-details/#respond Sun, 14 May 2017 13:41:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-han-solo-movie-woody-harrelson-finally-reveals-beckett-character-details/

The star had already revealed that he plays a character called Beckett in the film, but now we know a little more about him.

“What I can say he’s a good character, he is a mentor to Han and a criminal, but good at heart,” he told the Evening Standard.

The fact that he’s a mentor to the titular character has long been rumoured, but the nods to his positive influence and good nature are certainly new.

He added: “I am totally psyched to be making a Star Wars film. But the secrecy is on another level.”

The new comments come a few weeks after he previously claimed the Han Solo film is the best Star Wars effort to date.

“You know, any movie’s only as good as the director or in this case directors,” he said.

“I have a suspicion, because if you look at all the movies, there’s a lot of great stuff, but one might not be not as good with the writing in this or the acting in that or the directing in that.

“This has great actors, great directors, great script, and I really feel like we’re gonna make the best one.”

The Han Solo film is the second of a planned line of spin-off movies for the franchise.

After the huge success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story last year, more films are in the pipeline – although no specifics have been announced yet.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is rumoured to be getting his own tale, which Ewan McGregor has said he is interested in.

The Han Solo film – still officially untitled – releases on May 25, 2018.
