One combat soldier and one security observer from the Military Police’s Border Crossings Unit are accused of violating orders and sexually harassing women during their searches at the Qalandiya checkpoint next to Ramallah.

According to the allegations, the pair touched Palestinian women’s private parts during their frisking and sometimes forced them to strip. The two IDF servicemen also allegedly stole cash from Palestinians at the checkpoint.

After being apprehended last week and following the initial investigation by the military police unit, Jaffa Military Court extended their detentions until next Friday. Their misconduct, the court believes, amongst other offenses, could constitute racism.

“The allegations recount theft by a public servant, looting and abuse of power based on racist motives in addition to sexual offenses,” Judge Ihsan Halabi noted, extending the duo’s custody, Ynet reports.

While one of the soldiers denies the charges against him, Military Advocate General Captain Ariella Segal noted that “serious suspicions” in the case remain, requiring “additional” investigations. “The soldiers carried out acts without authority and contrary to correct procedure in strip-searching a number of women,” she stressed.

One of the main crossings into the West Bank, the Qalandiya checkpoint is often viewed as the hotspot of tension between the IDF and Palestinians. Those using the checkpoint often complain about being harshly interrogated while passing through the crossing.

Tensions between the neighbors have reached an all-time high, following Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital back in December. Clashes near Qalandiya checkpoint have been making headlines for months, ever since the Palestinians organized their Great March of Return protests, calling for an end to the 12-year-long Israeli blockade of Gaza. Over 180 Palestinians have been killed and thousands of others injured since the outbreak of the Gaza border protests on March 30, which demand the right of return for refugees.

Anti-abortion protesters banned from ‘harassing’ women outside termination clinic https://briefnews.eu/anti-abortion-protesters-banned-from-harassing-women-outside-termination-clinic/ https://briefnews.eu/anti-abortion-protesters-banned-from-harassing-women-outside-termination-clinic/#respond Wed, 11 Apr 2018 13:23:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/anti-abortion-protesters-banned-from-harassing-women-outside-termination-clinic/ Anti-abortion protesters allegedly threatening women outside termination clinics by telling them that their fetus would come back to haunt them have been banned in a west London borough.

Ealing Council’s cabinet voted for the implementation of a safe zone outside the Marie Stopes clinic in order to ensure pregnant women are able to pursue their termination without fear of being harassed.

Richard Bentley, managing director at Marie Stopes UK, said he was pleased authorities finally realized the toll such demonstrations take on patients.

“This is a landmark decision for women,” he said, ITV reported. “We are incredibly grateful to Ealing Council for recognizing the emotional distress that these groups create, and for taking proportionate action to protect the privacy and dignity of women accessing our clinic in the borough.”

Bentley added: “This was never about protest. It was about small groups of strangers choosing to gather by our entrance gates where they could harass and intimidate women, and try to prevent them from accessing healthcare to which they are legally entitled.”

Hansen Brevetti, the clinical operations manager at the clinic on Mattock Lane, said protesters told women their fetuses would come back to haunt them, imitated a child saying “mummy mummy don’t kill me,” and threw holy water and rosary beads at them.

However, not everyone agreed with the ban. Alina Dulgheriu, a representative for campaign group Be Here For Me, opted out of having an abortion when approached by a protester outside the clinic.

The 34-year-old said that because she was offered financial, practical and moral help, as well as accommodation, she now has a “beautiful” six-year-old daughter.

Dulgheriu said the safe zone would “remove life-saving help when it’s most needed,” adding: “I was given a real choice by the woman at the gate.”

Sheryl Sandberg on #MeToo: Men need to do more than stop sexually harassing women https://briefnews.eu/sheryl-sandberg-on-metoo-men-need-to-do-more-than-stop-sexually-harassing-women/ https://briefnews.eu/sheryl-sandberg-on-metoo-men-need-to-do-more-than-stop-sexually-harassing-women/#respond Sun, 04 Mar 2018 09:20:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sheryl-sandberg-on-metoo-men-need-to-do-more-than-stop-sexually-harassing-women/

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said today more needs to be done to address the concerns of the #metoo movement than not sexually harassing women.

“We need a world where women don’t get sexually harassed, full stop, period, but what’s important: That’s not enough, not enough,” she said onstage at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. “We need a world where women, and women of color particularly, get equal opportunity. It is not enough not to harass us. It’s necessary, but not sufficient.”

Sandberg continued to say she’s worried about the potential unintended consequences of #MeToo, and talked about #MentorHer, an initiative began last month by her nonprofit organization LeanIn.org.

Men occupy the majority of management positions, and a LeanIn.org and SurveyMonkey survey conducted in January found that twice as many male managers now feel uncomfortable working alone with a woman, a trend that could have a negative impact on women’s careers.

“Senior men are 3.5 times more likely to hesitate to have a work dinner with a junior woman than a junior man, 5 times more likely to hesitate to travel with a junior woman than a junior man. And that is a problem because I remember when I published Lean In 5 years ago, one of the most common responses I got from senior men was ‘You’re right, I take the man out for drinks, not the woman; I spend time with the man, not the woman; and that is the informal and formal mentoring time that women are not getting.’”

The result, she said, leads to a disproportionate number of men in leadership roles compared to women.

Men and women deserve equal access to that informal mentorship from managers, so if you don’t have dinner with junior woman, don’t have dinners with junior men either, Sandberg suggested. She brought the same message to a Morgan Stanley conference for investors and people in the tech and telecom industries earlier this week.

Well-known leaders in tech who have taken the #MentorHer pledge include Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky.

Policy changes can positively affect trends of sexual harassment and inequality, but so can culture, she said, and that’s a good thing, because “the good news is when it’s cultural, it means you can change it.”

“Culture does change, and culture has to change, it has to,” she said pointing to studies that have found that more diverse organizations produce better results. “I’m sure with every movement and every movement towards a following there are lifting, inspiring moments and moments when it feels impossible. But we have no choice but to change.”

In the home, more needs to be done as well, she said, since women in heterosexual relationships traditionally do 30-40 percent more of the child rearing and chores around the house.

“If you want to know what’s holding women back in the workplace, that’s a big chunk of it too, right? Because women have two jobs and men have one,” Sandberg said.

This is less of a problem for gay or lesbian couples, who tend to share chores more evenly.

“As a woman, you’re much better off with a woman,” she said.

Sandberg spoke today with Recode editor Kara Swisher at Lesbians Who Tech, a conference attended by more than 5,000 people in San Francisco’s Castro District.

  • Kate Upton recently took to social media to accuse Paul Marciano, a co-founder of Guess, of sexual and emotional harassment.
  • In the midst of these allegations, Guess announced Jennifer Lopez as the face of the company’s latest campaign.

Kate Upton is amongst an exclusive set of blonde models who had their careers made by a Guess campaign. But now, she’s taken to social media to speak out against Paul Marciano, a co-founder of the company.

Upton doesn’t specify an incident, but says Marciano “shouldn’t be allowed to use his power in the industry to sexually and emotionally harass women.” It’s unclear if Upton was among the allegedly harassed women; others responded to Upton’s Twitter post noting they, too, had heard of or witnessed misconduct from Marciano.

How to Fight Silicon Valley’s Sexually Harassing Investors https://briefnews.eu/how-to-fight-silicon-valleys-sexually-harassing-investors/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-fight-silicon-valleys-sexually-harassing-investors/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 07:34:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-fight-silicon-valleys-sexually-harassing-investors/

Layla Sabourian, founder of ed-tech startup Chef Koochooloo, wasn’t surprised when a sexism scandal hit Silicon Valley this past summer, with many of her female peers not only speaking out about bad behavior from investors but also naming them. Amid the swirl of revelations, though, she spotted an opportunity for change.

Sabourian had heard horror stories from other female founders, and while never sexually harassed, she’d been a victim of unconscious bias, time and again. On many occasions, she had been asked who was taking care of her kids while she was pitching. “Investors would cut me off in the middle of a pitch, and say, ‘I’d love you to meet my wife,’” she recalls. “But I’m not here for customers, I’m here to ask for money.”

Most VCs want to be more diverse and inclusive.

Layla Sabourian, startup founder

Now, she asked herself: Why not build a resource to warn women and minorities away from the bad eggs in the business? That’s how FairFunders was born, a website built by an army of female founders, for people to rate and review investors. It launched in August to overwhelming support, a backlash to shows like Shark Tank and Silicon Valley culture in general that suggest entrepreneurs need to bend over backward to impress investors. And FairFunders isn’t alone. The unwillingness to quietly accept sexism and discrimination, which exploded in the #metoo campaign that lit up social media this fall, has also spawned or boosted a wave of websites that aim to bring founders more details about which venture capitalists to turn to, and which to avoid. Know Your VC launched this past summer, and the Funded, which launched in the early 2000s, is gaining more traction than ever, with a 12 percent rise in user comments since 2012. All these platforms inform entrepreneurs if a venture capitalist is sexist, a time-waster or an all-around bad hombre. At FairFunders, Sabourian and her colleagues are also trying to help minority founders connect with investors and share their struggles.

“Most VCs want to be more diverse and inclusive,” says Sabourian.

Globerly founder Kiki Mwiti — both a minority entrepreneur and a woman — recalls how she faced a lot of pushback when she tried to raise money. “I’m African, I have an accent, I [don’t] come in the package they’re looking for,” she says. At the time, she didn’t have anyone she could talk to about this, thinking no one would connect with what she was going through. That’s why she got involved with FairFunders from day one. “Now for the first time, underrepresented groups have a space for that,” she says.

This take-no-prisoners approach is emerging at every level of the VC world, including the legislative sphere. In August, State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson from Santa Barbara, California, introduced a bill to stop sexual harassment in the VC sphere. “Every woman deserves a workplace free from harassment, especially women who are starting their businesses and may be even more vulnerable to inappropriate coercion,” she said in a statement. The bill will go to the Senate floor in January 2018.

That legislative effort began after a number of Silicon Valley sexism scandals went public, from 500 Startups founder Dave McClure telling women he didn’t know if he should “hit on [them] or hire [them]” to Justin Caldbeck, then of Lightspeed Venture Partners, being exposed as having a long history of harassing women.

The stories of sexual harassment in the Valley hit 22-year-old Anthony Zhang hard. The Los Angeles–based entrepreneur had received funding from some of these hot potatoes and was alarmed at his ignorance of their behavior. “I realized there’s no place entrepreneurs could safely share this,” he says. “The VCs are the gatekeepers and have the power, and people are afraid of saying the wrong thing.” To improve transparency, Zhang built an online ratings site, KnowYourVC.com. Since August, his site has amassed 18,000 active users and thousands of reviews. To ensure these are credible, and not just the handiwork of trolls, Zhang and his five-person team verify them. This involves asking founders for evidence and reading through screenshots and email conversations. “It’s time-consuming, but reputation is so crucial,” Zhang says. He also wants to highlight the VCs that are doubling down on diversity. So far, he has a 70/30 split of male to female users.

There are risks that come with some of these initiatives, cautions Laura Montoya, the East Bay director of Women Who Code and founder of Accel AI. “In their current state, which is very early in development, these sites are underwhelming and provide limited feedback,” says Montoya, who is also concerned about women and underrepresented founders getting a bad rap. “If their name gets attached to a supposed false report, even upstanding VCs will be less likely to trust [them].” But on the whole, she sees the growth of these sites as a positive. “There isn’t one thing that will stamp out discrimination, but I’m happy to see more work being [done] to bring light to unfair practices,” she adds.

But as rose-tinted as this talk is, can it really effect change, or is it just a Band-Aid rather than a long-term solution to a problem as entrenched as sexism is in the investment community? Globerly’s Mwiti insists that public consciousness is changing, referencing the concurrent sex scandals that are battering Hollywood and the media.

“A lot of people had whisper networks, but now organizations are taking action and concrete accountability is being demanded by founders,” she says, adding that the swift justice victims see happening gives them the courage to come forward. Now, that’s a world to invest in.

Dan Harmon Lays Into Sexist ‘Rick and Morty’ Trolls For Harassing Female Writers https://briefnews.eu/dan-harmon-lays-into-sexist-rick-and-morty-trolls-for-harassing-female-writers/ https://briefnews.eu/dan-harmon-lays-into-sexist-rick-and-morty-trolls-for-harassing-female-writers/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2017 17:34:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dan-harmon-lays-into-sexist-rick-and-morty-trolls-for-harassing-female-writers/ Rick and Morty Season 3 Release Date

Behind every powerful woman are legions of disgruntled male trolls trying to tear her down. It’s unfortunately a common sight on the internet: a female writer, social media personality, or women in the limelight find themselves subject to increasingly violent threats for a misspoken statement or badly-received work.

It’s even worse when it’s in a traditionally male sphere, like the case of Rick and Morty‘s new female writers. Jane Becker and Jessica Gao were part of a group of four female writers hired onto Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim show in season 3 — which until then had an all-male writers’ room. But this shift in the status quo led some Rick and Morty fans to lash out aggressively against Becker and Gao, harassing them on Twitter and doxxing them (publicly revealing their private information). And that has earned them the wrath of Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon.

Dan Harmon was livid over the way that his writers have been treated, and rightfully defensive of his show’s decision to work towards gender parity and shatter Adult Swim’s long-running issue working with women behind the scenes.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harmon went off against the trolls, calling them “disgusting.”

“I was familiar going into the third season, having talked to Felicia Day, that any high-profile women get doxxed, they get harassed, they get threatened, they get slandered. And part of it is a testosterone-based subculture patting themselves on the back for trolling these women. Because to the extent that you get can get a girl to shriek about a frog you’ve proven girls are girly and there’s no crime in assaulting her with a frog because it’s all in the name of proving something. I think it’s all disgusting.”

Gao and Becker are part of the group of new hires brought on earlier this year including Erica Rosbe and Sarah Carbiener. They found themselves the subject of harassment by Rick and Morty fans after a few season 3 episodes with their names credited (“Rickmancing the Stone” and “Pickle Rick”) earned ire for one reason or another.

Harmon derided the fans’ “total ignorance of how writing a television show works,” explaining that each episode is a collaborative effort, with no single writer responsible for an episode’s voice or quality. The writer who gets credit for the episode is often the one who put in the most work, but to blame a single writer — in this case, to single out the female writers — is stupid.

Harmon continued telling it how it is, remarking that these trolls harassing his writers are likely immature or actual children who live with a dangerously regressive mindset:

“These knobs, that want to protect the content they think they own—and somehow combine that with their need to be proud of something they have, which is often only their race or gender. It’s offensive to me as someone who was born male and white, and still works way harder than them, that there’s some white male [fan out there] trying to further some creepy agenda by ‘protecting’ my work … And I’m speaking for myself—I don’t want the show to have a political stance. But at the same time, individually, these [harassers] aren’t politicians and don’t represent politics. They represent some shit that I probably believed when I was 15.”

A guy accused of harassing a female developer gets rejected from a Google-led organization https://briefnews.eu/a-guy-accused-of-harassing-a-female-developer-gets-rejected-from-a-google-led-organization/ https://briefnews.eu/a-guy-accused-of-harassing-a-female-developer-gets-rejected-from-a-google-led-organization/#respond Tue, 09 May 2017 05:26:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-guy-accused-of-harassing-a-female-developer-gets-rejected-from-a-google-led-organization/ man silhouette shadowSean Gallup/Getty Images

If Susan Fowler’s episode with Uber is the quintessential example of how female engineers can be mistreated at their Valley jobs, the story of a very important Google-led project asking a guy to leave is the total opposite.

Last week, the group made the controversial decision to eject a man from the group for violation of its Code of Conduct policies, reports TC Currie at The New Stack.

But the interesting thing is, his alleged violations didn’t take place inside the group, but outside of it, before he even joined. The group who booted him was the Kubernetes Community.

This guy was accused of harassing well-known female developer Jessie Frazelle when she worked at a $ 1 billion-valued startup called Docker.

Docker helped create a new market for a new technology called “containers,” a way for developers to more easily write apps that will live in the cloud.

Jessie Frazelle MesosphereYouTube/Container CampFrazelle loved her work, she often said publicly, and traveled around giving talks on how to use the new container tech that she was helping to build. S

he was known as “THE face of Docker engineering to the community.”

But there was a dark side of her job. Just because she was a woman in tech, Frazelle had been subject to brutal harassment including sex, rape, and death threats.

Her employer had known about this for a while because she had grown so fed up with it that way back in July 2015, she wrote about these experiences in a post that went viral.

About a year ago, the situation culminated for her. A tweet from another female engineer claimed that Frazelle was “harassed out” of Docker. People close to her tell us that there was one particular man who was harassing her so badly that she gave her company an ultimatum: him or me. And she was the one who ultimately left.

Jess Frazelle tweetsTwitter/Jess FrazelleWord of her leaving Docker also went viral, as did the reason. So much so that Docker’s CEO at the time, Ben Golub, responded with a long post about how the company had “hired private investigators, involving law enforcement, changing internal systems insisting” to try and protect her.

He also declared, “She did not at any time claim harassment from people inside Docker. We parted ways on good terms.”

Business Insider has seen no evidence that someone inside Docker did actually harass her. Frazelle politely declined comment and Docker did not respond to our request for comment.

However people familiar with the situation have told us that many people in that close-knit container community knew the details of Frazelle’s accusations, knew who the man was at the center of it and told us that the parties involved had signed non-disclosure agreements. Docker just hired a new CEO.

And then last week, Frazelle tweeted that this same guy had followed her. He had joined the same Kubernetes Community project where Frazelle was making a name for herself.

This isn’t surprising in some ways. Kubernetes is a very popular open source technology created and run by Google for managing containers. If you are someone working in the container market, then your path would naturally cross with Kubernetes.

Still, in a series of tweets that ranged from panic to outrage, Frazelle raised questions as to why he had joined her particular area of Kubernetes.

She feared he would allegedly continue to attack her. Her tweets gained a lot of attention.

People also told us that they brought the situation up with Sarah Novotny, Google’s program manager for the Kubernetes community.

One person told us Novotny was between a rock and a hard place, since it was the man’s job to work on Kubernetes and that Frazelle’s complaints about him were, in this case, more about a professional run-in than about any violation of the group’s code of conduct at this time.

But Novotny and the rest of the board shocked the community by promising to investigate. In a post on a forum, she wrote:

“Regarding the concern of specific new members to our community who may have exhibited behaviors not in accordance with our Code of Conduct in other communities, please know we take enforcement of our code of conduct seriously. Reports by our community members of current and prior bad behaviors will be weighed as part of our action, if any.”

The next day she announced that the person will not be joining Kubernetes at all.

“We have mutually agreed with this person that they won’t participate in the Kubernetes community at this time. This includes resources of the community, including but not limited to, Slack, mailing lists, SIGs, and GitHub organizations. In the event that this person wants to participate in the Kubernetes Community at some later date, they are welcome to reach out to the Code of Conduct Committee which will perform further investigation. We appreciate everyone who shared reports with us relevant to this incident and they will be considered in any further investigation by the committee.”

People familiar with the situation told us the man was asked to leave rather than bowing out gracefully. Novotny has not yet responded to our request for comment.

In any case, it was a rare instance where the Valley culture stood up for the woman who had, for years, been fighting against harassment. And lots of people involved in this group approve.

Lawyers for the Southern Poverty Law Center have sued the owner of a white supremacist website, accusing him of unleashing a “troll storm” of harassment on a Jewish real estate agent.

The lawsuit (PDF) was filed Tuesday against Andrew Anglin, publisher of the Daily Stormer neo-Nazi website. It claims he unleashed a “coordinated, repulsive, threatening campaign of anti-Semitic harassment” on Tanya Gersh, a real estate agent living in Whitefish, Montana. The campaign allegedly resulted in more than 700 threatening phone calls, voicemails, and e-mails.

At issue is whether a prominent publisher of a far-right website can be held legally liable for online “trolling” tactics his articles inspired. Lawyers for Gersh say Anglin violated Montana’s “Anti-Intimidation Act,” and that he should be made to pay for Gersh’s loss of privacy and emotional distress.

The Iranian military has brushed off accusations from the US Navy that its fast-attack boats came dangerously close to a US aircraft carrier in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, as it was on its way to the Arabian Gulf on an anti-terrorist mission.

Dismissing the allegations, Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri, deputy chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, stated that the reports of a faceoff were completely unfounded and stem from “false reports or ulterior motives,” IRNA cited him as saying.

Jazayeri went on to stress that the US would be solely to blame for any potential skirmishes that may break out in the area, and called on the US military to review its operations.

“We emphasize that the Americans would be responsible for any unrest in the Persian Gulf, and again warn that the US military must change its behavior,” he said.

The incident, while ending without a shot from either of the two sides, has inflamed tensions brewing in relations between Tehran and Washington, which have been growing increasingly toxic since Donald Trump’s inauguration as US president in January.

The circumstances of the standoff were not been revealed until Wednesday, when US Navy commanders referred to the incident to accuse Iran of undermining safe traffic in international transit waters. Speaking Saturday, Rear Admiral Kenneth Whitesell, commander of the Carrier Strike Group 2, claimed that Iranian speedboats approached the 5-vessel flotilla led by the US aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, within a range of 870 meters (950 yards) with “some of the weapons manned” and in the process of fitting all the armaments.

To confront the threat allegedly posed by the Iranian boats, helicopters were dispatched from the carrier to hover over them, with one boat allegedly “threatening” the copter. Slamming the reported belligerent conduct of the Iranian Navy, the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier, Captain Will Pennington, called it “certainly unprofessional.”

It is not the first time that Tehran and Washington have clashed over navigation issues in the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier in March, Iran and the US accused each other of compromising security in the waterway. At the time, it was the Iranian Navy which blamed the US tracking ship USNS Invincible for changing course towards the Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats, calling the US conduct “unprofessional.” The US Navy came up with counter-claims in response, alleging that Iranian boats chased the US ship, risking “miscalculation or an accidental provocation.”

Growing tensions between Iran and the US have recently exacerbated by a set of ballistic missile tests carried out by Iran despite strong opposition Washington, which, in turn, has rolled out new sanctions against the Islamic Republic. The latest launch came just in early March, when Iran announced it had successfully fired the Hormuz-2 naval missile, capable of hitting targets within a range of 300 kilometers (180 miles).
