The police are forced to investigate the poisonings “under tremendous political pressure,” Zakharova told reporters on Friday.

The spokesperson also believes the British probes are compromised because of “high political stakes” at government level regarding the cases.

During a weekly media event, Zakharova stressed that local police are ignoring requests from Russia and fail to confirm or debunk the slew of stories surrounding the case which is circulating in the British press. Often these stories are contradictory and based on anonymous sources. The UK government has created“the atmosphere of secrecy” to “conceal the truth” about the cases, she argued.

In March, former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in Salisbury by what the British side reported to be the Russian military-grade nerve agent ‘Novichok.’ The Skripals have since recovered and were discharged from hospital.

On 4 July, British police reported that a local couple was poisoned in Amesbury, a town not far from where the Skripal incident occurred. One victim, Charlie Rowley, 45, recovered, while his partner Dawn Sturgess, 44, died in hospital.

The British government immediately blamed Moscow for the Skripal poisoning, despite the fact that the probes failed to produce any concrete evidence linking the cases to Russia. Experts at a military lab in Porton Down who analyzed the samples collected from the crime scene couldn’t establish the source of the nerve agent or prove that it came from Russia. 

Moreover, Germany – a major UK ally – has also started to cast doubts on how credible the accusation against Moscow was. 

Moscow says it has, on numerous occasions, offered the UK assistance with the probe, considering that one of the victims, Yulia Skripal, retains Russian citizenship. The Russian consular services also made requests to interview Skripal and check her condition. All requests were denied, Russia has said.

Egypt holidays are on the rise for British tourists, according to Thomas Cook.

Bookings for 2018 are up by 89 per cent, with other troubled destinations such as Tunisia and Turkey also seeing an increase in holidays.

Yet Egypt sellers and traders have a reputation for harassing tourists in an imposing way, putting many off from travelling.

A new law has been put in place by the Egyptian government banning street vendors from harassing tourists near popular attractions.

The fine for this who break the law is as much as £400.

The new law states that anyone dealing with tourists “with the intention of begging or promoting, offering or selling a good or service” will be breaking the law.

Local vendors have denied there is a problem in the area and that it is still safe to go to the tourist attractions.

Oscar Saleh, who offers camel rides near Giza, told The Guardian: “Go visit the Egyptian Museum, go visit the pyramids – no one will bother you.”

This is in spite of the current advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warning of the aggressive methods.

It warns that there is a “risk that tourists at high-profile sites like the Giza Pyramids may be confronted aggressively for money or business, even while travelling by car or taxi”.

Some MPs in the country think the fines are not steep enough and that more needs to be done to protect tourism.

Former minister of antiquities Zahi Hawass spoke on an Egypt TV show: “A EGP 10,000 fine is not enough.

”There should be both a fine and a prison sentence, because these people harm the income of the country.”

A number of incidents to have plagued the country have affected tourism in recent years.

Flights to Sharm el-Sheikh were suspended in 2015 after a Russian plane crashed into North Sinai after a terrorist attack.

Numbers have dwindled from 15 million in 2010 to just 5 million in 2016.

Whilst the UK is yet to announce flights to Sharm el-Sheikh are to commence again, the FCO states the government is still working to “enable regular flights between the UK and Sharm el Sheikh to resume”.

Popular destinations in the country are Cairo, the capital city, Alexandria and Hurghada.

Travellers wanting to visit the country should also be wary of fake tourist visa websites that have recently emerged for British travellers looking to travel to Egypt.

Facebook is no stranger to blunders and it just added another to its running list. The Guardian reports that the company asked some of its users to take a survey over the weekend, with questions delving into what should or shouldn’t be allowed on the site and who should police content. Among these questions was one that read, “There are a wide range of topics and behaviors that appear on Facebook. In thinking about an ideal world where you could set Facebook’s policies, how would you handle the following: a private message in which an adult man asks a 14 year old girl for sexual pictures.” Survey takers could respond that such content should be allowed and they wouldn’t mind seeing it, that it should be allowed but they wouldn’t want to see it, that it shouldn’t be allowed or no preference.

In a follow-up question, Facebook then asked users for their thoughts on who should decide the rules regarding such content. Response options included Facebook on its own, Facebook with advice from external experts, external experts on their own or Facebook users. In neither question did the survey acknowledge a role for law enforcement or that in many places, such actions would be illegal.

Facebook has since stopped running the surveys and Guy Rosen, Facebook’s VP of product, said they were “a mistake.” Writing on Twitter, Rosen said, “We run surveys to understand how the community thinks about how we set policies. But this kind of activity is and will always be completely unacceptable on FB. We regularly work with authorities if identified. It shouldn’t have been part of this survey. That was a mistake.”

Though it appears that Facebook was pretty quick to remove the questions, there’s no reason they should ever have been there in the first place. And it’s mind-boggling to think that anyone would have considered them to be appropriate queries to begin with. In a statement to the Guardian, Facebook said, “We understand this survey refers to offensive content that is already prohibited on Facebook and that we have no intention of allowing so have stopped the survey. We have prohibited child grooming on Facebook since our earliest days; we have no intention of changing this and we regularly work with the police to ensure that anyone found acting in such a way is brought to justice.”

In a Wednesday blog post, Robert Scoble, the Silicon Valley pundit who was recently publicly accused of sexual assault and harassment, now claims that he didn’t sexually harass anyone because they were never his employees.

“I don’t have employees, I don’t cut checks for investment,” he wrote. “None of the women who came forward were ever in a position where I could make or break their careers. Sexual Harassment requires that I have such power.”

When Ars asked Scoble how he came to his understanding of what did and did not constitute sexual harassment, he did not directly respond but wrote in an e-mail that “the legal definition of sexual harassment has to do with the power position of the two people.”

Iran denied on Saturday U.S. accusations that its fast-attack boats were “harassing” warships at the mouth of the Gulf, and said Washington would be responsible for any clashes in the key oil shipping route.

U.S. Navy commanders earlier accused Iran of jeopardizing international navigation by “harassing” warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and said future incidents could result in miscalculation and lead to an armed clash.

They spoke after the U.S. aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush confronted what one of the commanding officers described as two sets of Iranian Navy fast-attack boats that had approached a U.S.-led, five-vessel flotilla as it entered the Strait on Tuesday on a journey from the Indian Ocean into the Gulf.

It was the first time a U.S. carrier entered the narrow waterway, where up to 30 percent of global oil exports pass, since President Donald Trump took office in January pledging a tougher U.S. stance towards Iran.

In Tehran, Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri, deputy chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, said the U.S. claims of the confrontation in the Gulf were based on “false reports or ulterior motives”, the state news agency IRNA reported.

“We emphasize that the Americans would be responsible for any unrest in the Persian Gulf, and again warn that the U.S. military must change its behavior,” Jazayeri said, without elaborating.

U.S. commanders earlier said Tuesday’s incident, in which the George H.W. Bush sent helicopter gunships to hover over the Iranian speedboats as some came as close as 950 yards (870 meters) from the aircraft carrier, ended without a shot being fired.

But it underscored growing tension between the United States and Iran since the election of Trump, who has condemned the 2015 nuclear deal that his predecessor Barack Obama and leaders of five other world powers struck with Tehran and labeled the Islamic Republic “the number one terrorist state”.

The encounter with Iranian Navy boats occurred as the USS George H.W. Bush was en route to the northern part of the Gulf to participate in U.S.-led air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

Earlier in March, Iran disputed the U.S. account of another confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz between its speedboats and a U.S. Navy vessel.

Internet cretins engaged in a harassment campaign against a woman who worked for Electronic Arts this weekend, flooding her social media and various internet profiles with vitriolic, often misogynistic messages. Her sin, it appears, was working on animations for the game Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Allie Rose-Marie Leost, who worked for EA’s motion-capture labs in Vancouver, saw vicious harassment on Twitter and other websites today, most often from people who blamed her for Andromeda’s awkward facial animations. The harassment appears to have been primarily triggered by a vile blog post at Ralph Retort, a right-wing, GamerGate-tied website, that claimed Leost was the lead facial animator on Andromeda. That website also accused her of performing sexual acts to get her job at EA.

Here’s a small sample of the hundreds of messages Leost faced today:

As often happens with these internet witch-hunts, the harassment campaign against Leost was based on false information. BioWare today released a statement clarifying that she was not, in fact, a lead animator on Mass Effect: Andromeda. (There has been some confusion over whether Leost’s social media posts indicated that she was a lead, but given that she worked at EA Labs and not at the Andromeda team’s offices in Montreal, it’s clear that’s not the case.)

BioWare also condemned the abuse with a statement this afternoon:

Leost did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Somehow, the attacks seem completely predictable despite how terrible they are. In the age of President Trump and GamerGate, it all feels straight out of some especially insecure and desperate playbook. Starting with the transformation of a game’s sometimes silly character animations into a conspiracy, and then later a scandal in which the data points waver between incomplete and meaningless, the cycle isn’t new by this point.
