The Voice judge Olly Murs has emerged as one of the most popular guesses among ITV viewers for The Masked Singer’s Robin in recent weeks thanks to the disguised act’s show-stopping performances. Renowned for his singing vocals and charismatic stage presence, Olly appears to fit the bill – something Heart radio host Mark Wright was keen to put to the singer on his show today. However, instead of getting an answer, Olly hung up the phone to avoid any further grilling on the subject, sending the rumour mill into meltdown.

So far on The Masked Singer, guesses for Robin from the judging panel have ranged from boxer Amir Khan to EastEnders’ Dean Gaffney to chart-topper Bruno Mars.

However, it’s former X Factor finalist Olly who seems to be one of the most popular possible culprits performing under Robin’s disguise with fans.

And despite initially denying the rumours to pal and former TOWIE star Mark on his radio show on Thursday, the host was left convinced he’d caught him out by getting him to perform a rendition of Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling – the same song Robin performed on Saturday.

The debate began as Mark grilled Olly: “So listen, I’m gonna have this out with you Olls, right. The Masked Singer, you know The Masked Singer, don’t you?”

Olly confirmed he did, adding: “It’s on before The Voice, it’s the support act for the main show.”

The pair shared a laugh before Mark admitted he too has had numerous tweets from fans asking if it’s him behind the Robin mask.

However, the Heart radio host had a theory of his own that it was instead Olly performing.

“You are favourite [with the bookmakers] to be the Robin,” Mark informed his pal. “And there’s a reason that makes sense because people say me and you sound like each other.”

However, a few moments later, Mark then played a clip from Robin’s performance of the same song to compare the two vocals.

Adamant he could hear similarities between Olly and Robin, Mark asked The Voice judge to perform the hit one more time.

Olly, however, had other ideas as he replied: “Mate, I’ve got to go, sorry.”

Listeners heard Olly put the phone after coming under the microscope by Mark, as the Heart host joked: “We’ve stitched him!”

“I think we’ve got him,” Mark excitedly said to his listeners – but is Olly really the one under Robin’s mask?

A number of fans seem to think so as several replied to Heart’s official Twitter account applauding Mark’s detective skills.

“Oh, Mark what have you done? [cry laughing emoji],” one fan replied, with a second adding: “Well played mate [wink emoji].”

Fans will have to wait until Robin is unmasked on the ITV show to find out for sure.

The Masked Singer continues Saturday on ITV.

Jeremy Vine stunned as caller hangs up after berating him over ‘extremely rude’ remark https://briefnews.eu/jeremy-vine-stunned-as-caller-hangs-up-after-berating-him-over-extremely-rude-remark/ https://briefnews.eu/jeremy-vine-stunned-as-caller-hangs-up-after-berating-him-over-extremely-rude-remark/#respond Thu, 07 Nov 2019 20:59:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jeremy-vine-stunned-as-caller-hangs-up-after-berating-him-over-extremely-rude-remark/

Today on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 show, the panel were discussing strikes and wanted viewers’ opinions about whether Christmas strikes should be illegal. The debate comes as the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers announced that South Western Railway workers will walk out for 27 days over December in a dispute over train guards.

One caller, Angela from Pembrokeshire, rang in to say a rail strike is acceptable but was shocked by Jeremy’s comments.

Co-host Storm Huntley introduced the caller: “We’re going to speak to Angela from Pembrokeshire saying the train strike are in the best interests of both the staff and travellers.”

Jeremy remarked: “I note that Pembrokeshire is not covered by South Western trains Angela.”

“Well, that doesn’t mean I can’t have a comment,” Angela replied.

Jeremy added: “No, I didn’t say that to upset you.”

“As you have just said that I am going to put my phone down and I’m going to switch you off because I think you’ve just been extremely rude to somebody who has bothered to pick up the phone to make a comment,” Angela hit back, clearly annoyed by the host.

“So I am going to put my phone down now and I am going to switch you off.”

Laughing, Jeremy told her: “Make sure you it goes down hard.”

“I don’t know what’s got in to people,” he continued as the panel looked shocked.

The topic certainly had viewers talking on Twitter with one agreeing with Angela.

They tweeted: “The woman who hung up her phone was sort of correct, you are becoming a bit too rude to you viewers, and on a side note, your panel are all too often heavily female led, it is certainly miles away from The Wright Stuff, it’s not even the ‘nearly right stuff’.”

Another added: “Go Angela from Pembrokeshire! That’s a great way to get your view across – put the phone down and not speak however, yes maybe @JeremyVineOn5 should have saved his comment til she’s made hers.”

Speaking on the proposed strikes, one viewer shared: “The best time to strike is to inconvenience people or nobody takes no notice.

“You didn’t say this about the eco warriors protest should be illegal. It’s to get their point across.”

Another added: “No they shouldn’t if its the only way to make employers to sort out the issues then this is the best way.

“Stop criminalising workers because they have serious issues with employers.”

Jeremy Vine on 5 airs weekdays on Channel 5 at 9.15am.

  • North Korea returned the remains of 55 bodies, thought to belong to US servicemembers, on Friday.
  • The repatriation — on the 65th anniversary of the armistice that paused the Korean War — was a commitment Kim made at his summit with Donald Trump.
  • Every other element of Trump’s North Korea policy looks to have taken a nosedive, but this represents a hopeful thread.
  • North Korea still hasn’t denuclearized and remains difficult in talks with the US.
  • But if the two countries can build trust over time, Trump’s approach has a chance of working.

North Korea returned the remains of 55 bodies, thought to belong to US servicemembers on Friday, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the armistice that paused the Korean War.

The symbolic move represents the single, hopeful thread of President Donald Trump’s North Korea policy, as the rest of it crumbles.

Portugal hangs on to avoid repeat of 2014 group stage exit https://briefnews.eu/portugal-hangs-on-to-avoid-repeat-of-2014-group-stage-exit/ https://briefnews.eu/portugal-hangs-on-to-avoid-repeat-of-2014-group-stage-exit/#respond Tue, 26 Jun 2018 09:12:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/portugal-hangs-on-to-avoid-repeat-of-2014-group-stage-exit/ Cristiano Ronaldo's missed penalty cost Portugal first place in its World Cup group.

It could have been worse if not for Ricardo Quaresma, who started for the first time in the tournament and scored his maiden World Cup goal with a shot that had about as much flare as any in the tournament.

Portugal finished second in Group B after a 1-1 draw with Iran on Monday. The 2016 European champions will next face Uruguay on Saturday in the round of 16.

"The conclusion and the most important thing is we're going to continue playing," Portugal coach Fernando Santos said. "We had a strong opponent."

Quaresma became the only player other than Ronaldo to score for the Portuguese in three games in Russia. The 34-year-old midfielder also became Portugal's oldest scorer in World Cup play by hitting a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area that went beyond the reach of diving Iran goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand.

Spain and Portugal move on to the round of 16, while Iran and Morocco are going home. 1:39

Quaresma's goal came on a night when Ronaldo — who had scored all four Portugal goals in its first two games of Group B play — was denied on a penalty by Beiranvand.

"We were on top of the game until the penalty, and we didn't make it. It wasn't perfect, but that's football," Santos said. "We did what was expected and now we have to settle down and think about Uruguay."

Karim Ansarifard scored a late penalty for Iran, which need to win to advance but couldn't break through a second time despite a furious charge in the waning minutes.

Ronaldo given a yellow card

The penalty was awarded after a video review showed a handball in the area against Portugal. But although Iran coach Carolos Queiroz benefited from that review, he railed against the system for the second day in a row. In particular, he cited a decision to give Ronaldo a yellow card after his elbow struck Iran defender Morteza Pouraliganji in the face.

"Elbow is red card in the rules," Queiroz asserted, adding that there are no written exceptions for players named Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. "The decisions they must be clear for everybody, for the people. Everybody agrees that VAR is not going well. That's the reality. There are a lot of complaints."

Spain won Group B after its 2-2 draw with Morocco. Both Spain and Portugal had a goal difference of plus-1, but Spain scored six goals in its three group matches while Portugal had five.

Spain will next face host Russia on Sunday in Moscow.

Quaresma had nine international goals in 78 previous appearances for Portugal. But his goal against Iran had all appeal of a Ronaldo strike. He sent the shot with the outside of his right foot right spinning into the far corner near the end of the first half.

Not bad for someone who had played little more than 20 minutes as a substitute in Portugal's first two games. Ronaldo certainly looked impressed, wrapping his right arm around Quaresma's shoulders as he roared and raised his left fist into the air.

Santos's confidence that Quaresma was ready to influence the game not only was clear in his decision to start the veteran, but in the coach's comment afterward.

"I always take the decisions that are right for my team," he said.

Ronaldo, who avoided reporters as he left the Mordovia Arena, has now missed six of his last 14 penalty kicks. But he hasn't been the only big star to miss one in this tournament. Messi also was denied in Argentina's opening draw against Iceland.

Ronaldo's penalty was awarded after the use of video review following an apparent takedown of the Portugal forward by Saeid Ezatolahi in the area. The Iranian team, already aggrieved by the replay system overturning a goal against Spain, reacted angrily. Players swarmed Paraguayan referee Enrique Caceres, who initially had waved play on after Ronaldo went down.

Beiranvand made it a moot point, but normally defensive-minded Iran still needed to score multiple goals to advance, and they were unable to do so against a squad that won the 2016 European Championship by virtue of its own strong defensive play.

Iran has now been to five World Cups — all since 1978 — but has yet to advance out of group play. Its players collapsed on the field at the final whistle while Portugal's somewhat muted celebration had more the look of relief.

Dennis hangs tough to stay in pink at Giro https://briefnews.eu/dennis-hangs-tough-to-stay-in-pink-at-giro/ https://briefnews.eu/dennis-hangs-tough-to-stay-in-pink-at-giro/#respond Wed, 09 May 2018 21:02:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dennis-hangs-tough-to-stay-in-pink-at-giro/ AUSSIE star Rohan Dennis has retained the overall lead in the Giro d’Italia after Italy’s Enrico Battaglin surged ahead in a thrilling finale to win stage five in Sicily.

Local boy Giovanni Visconti, looking to impress before his home fans, led coming around the final turn with 200m to go before Team LottoNL-Jumbo rider Battaglin accelerated to take his third career Giro victory in a reduced bunch sprint.

But Dennis managed to weather the storm and finish safely in the peloton to keep the pink jersey, a second ahead of defending champion Tom Dumoulin going into the mountain stage up Mount Etna.

Visconti crossed second and Portugal’s Jose Goncalves third, both with the same time as Battaglin on the Agrigento to Santa Ninfa leg.

Britain’s Simon Yates, who won the young rider classification at last year’s Tour de France, sits third overall – 17 seconds behind Dennis, who claimed the lead after the second stage.

“It was a nice day on the bike, on quite a slow pace because of the head wind,” said BMC rider Dennis.

“I felt a bit of stress every now and then but I am glad to be in the Maglia Rosa. We’re only on day five, that means sixteen days to go. Tomorrow will be another story with the Etna. I’m looking forward to see how I’ll go up there.”

Astana rider Miguel Angel Lopez, who misjudged a turn with 6km to go, rode straight off the road and fell into a patch of high grass and finished 42 seconds behind.

“The finish was a bit different to yesterday. Yesterday was really a powerful sprint on a really steep climb,” said Battaglin, who also won Giro stages in 2013 and 2014.

“Today was a steep climb but at two kilometres to go I had a little bit of time to rest and recover and do a really good sprint.”

Plane hangs horrifyingly close to Black Sea after runway slip (VIDEO, PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/plane-hangs-horrifyingly-close-to-black-sea-after-runway-slip-video-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/plane-hangs-horrifyingly-close-to-black-sea-after-runway-slip-video-photos/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 11:28:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/plane-hangs-horrifyingly-close-to-black-sea-after-runway-slip-video-photos/

A passenger jet with over 160 on board slid off the runway in the Turkish city of Trabzon Saturday night and was left precariously perched atop a cliff edge, saved only by the freezing mud.

“We’re sorry to report that the Boeing 737-800 type TC-CPF registered aircraft of Pegasus Airlines Flight Number PC 8622 Ankara-Trabzon flight scheduled at 18:25 UTC tonight, had a Runway Excursion Incident during landing at Trabzon Airport (13 January 2018),” the airline wrote in an official statement about the incident.

“All 162 passengers, 2 pilots and 4 cabin crew have been disembarked safely from the aircraft. There has been no loss of life or injury to anyone on-board,” the company added.

While rainy conditions reportedly made the runway surface slick, the jet recorded speeds of 110 knots (204kph, 127mph) on the final third of the runway according to data from RadarBox. The airport was closed until 9am local time Sunday.

“We’ve taken all necessary measures. We will reopen the airport to air traffic as soon as possible,” Trabzon Governor Yücel Yavuz said Saturday night, as cited by Yeni Safak, adding that a crisis desk had been set up following the incident and that an investigation into the circumstances of the accident had already begun. He also confirmed that there were no reported issues with the runway.

History Hangs Heavily Over Tulsa’s Lone Black Councilwoman https://briefnews.eu/history-hangs-heavily-over-tulsas-lone-black-councilwoman/ https://briefnews.eu/history-hangs-heavily-over-tulsas-lone-black-councilwoman/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 09:27:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/history-hangs-heavily-over-tulsas-lone-black-councilwoman/ To engage with Vanessa Hall-Harper is to grapple with the tragic history of race relations in Tulsa. Reckoning is the only option when sitting down with the 46-year-old, who, within minutes, is digging into what was — and what could have been.

They called the city councilor’s North Tulsa district “Black Wall Street” in the early 20th century, when African-American aristocrats paraded their automobiles down roads lined with more than 200 Black-owned businesses. But on May 31, 1921, everything changed. Resentment over Black wealth erupted, with white vigilantes taking to the streets, killing at least 300 of their neighbors of color and firebombing their businesses in what would be dubbed a “race riot” by the history books — and then promptly forgotten.

Too often, the past becomes destiny. It’s a thought internalized by Hall-Harper, a history lover since she studied political science and organized sit-ins at the historically Black Jackson State University in Mississippi. “It’s a slap in the face to call it a riot,” she says. But now, the native daughter of a Tulsa structural mechanic can start righting the wrongs of the past. Elected to the city council last year after defeating 12-year incumbent Jack Henderson, she has crafted a constituency around grassroots activism, expanding access to food in her district and reviving traditions that speak to the area’s once thriving African-American community. She has elevated the concerns of those who had forgotten their power, says Chief Amusen, a Black organizer and guidance counselor in Tulsa. “Instead of her being the voice, she became the messenger for the community’s needs. Whether it’s police matters, social justice, mental health, you name it, she’s been a part of it.”

She is the only person of color on the nine-member city council, at a time when the election of Donald Trump has inflamed racial tensions across the country.

It’s quite the ascent for Hall-Harper, a self-professed “class clown” in high school. Her first job after college was flipping burgers at Wendy’s. She later became a receptionist for the Tulsa County Juvenile Bureau and eventually worked her way to manager of the Tulsa Health Department’s Healthy Living program.

Hall-Harper arrives at a key moment for both her city and the nation. She is the only person of color on the nine-member city council, at a time when the election of Donald Trump has inflamed racial tensions across the country, “as bad as during the Civil Rights Movement,” she says. Her historical sense sees similarities between the white jealousy that sparked the Tulsa massacre and the recent reaction critics had — after players knelt to protest racial injustice — to her beloved Dallas Cowboys: “Shut up, because you are fortunate enough to make money,” she says, summarizing their complaints.

Since taking office in January, Hall-Harper has worked with the mayor to create the first African-American Affairs Commission, an action her predecessor had been loathe to champion. She has revived Juneteenth, an annual festival dating back to 1865 that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. and once drew names like Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. Her work was instrumental in bringing a Save-A-Lot to North Tulsa, which has “needed a grocery store for a long time,” says the district’s State Senator Kevin Matthews, who previously backed Henderson. “[People] are excited about some movement on development in the area,” he adds.

Img 8557

In 2021, North Tulsa will become a flash point again, as the city observes the centennial of the Tulsa massacre. Philanthropic organizations have gathered some $ 4 million to date, Hall-Harper says, to enhance the district with revitalized parks and tourist attractions to take advantage of the returning spotlight. “It is true the world will be watching,” says Matthews. Positively spun, the funding will be used to honor the victims and create sustainable businesses in the struggling district. But Hall-Harper is quick to question why it’s taken this long to get the much-needed investment: “You’re doing it now because of the attention the city is going to have,” she says.

Hall-Harper is working with local leaders to create a set of community policing standards — a divisive issue nationally, and in her own home. Last year, she stood with the family of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed Black man shot by the Tulsa police, when they held a press conference after his death. Meanwhile, her husband, Marcus Harper, was the chief officer investigating the case. The college sweethearts make an unlikely duo: Marcus is a brawny officer resembling “Terry Tate, Office Linebacker” of YouTube fame; Vanessa, a petite 5-foot-4, shows her grit through fiery speeches and high-stakes matches of Spades or Dominoes.

Asked her feelings about the police, Hall-Harper doesn’t mince words. Most are good, she says, but “there are a few rotten, horrible apples. They are not above the law, and they do, oftentimes, take on this God-like mentality.” Her husband, meanwhile, acknowledges that clear errors were made in cases like Tamir Rice’s in Cleveland or Philando Castile’s in Minneapolis, but he hesitates to try cops further than they already are. “You’re talking about overhauling the criminal justice system,” Harper says. The couple presents a fascinating portrait: the cop and the councilor caught in a national debate that’s inciting both sides. The conflict is embodied in their daughter, whom they say is as likely to wear a Fraternal Order of the Police shirt as a Black Lives Matter tee on any given day.

Walking in North Tulsa, there’s no ignoring the past for the city councilor. It sits in the bricks beneath her feet, listing the names of the victims from 1921, and in the graffiti behind her that crosses out “RACE RIOT” and replaces it with “MASSACRE” in bold red letters. It will take time to change that legacy in a district that is a shade of its former self — and folks like Hall-Harper working hard to keep history’s clock from turning idly.

Kenya’s election re-run rocked by violence, riots, and political gangs as regions fate hangs in balance https://briefnews.eu/kenyas-election-re-run-rocked-by-violence-riots-and-political-gangs-as-regions-fate-hangs-in-balance/ https://briefnews.eu/kenyas-election-re-run-rocked-by-violence-riots-and-political-gangs-as-regions-fate-hangs-in-balance/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 08:47:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kenyas-election-re-run-rocked-by-violence-riots-and-political-gangs-as-regions-fate-hangs-in-balance/ kenya riot electionREUTERS/Baz Ratner

  • After a messy election, Kenya’s election re-run has run into trouble and violence as well, with political gangs organized by opposition party leader Raila Odinga creating violence and disrupting voting.
  • Overall 90 percent of polling places remain open, government officials say.
  • East Africa relies on Kenya’s capital as Nairobi for a trade and logistics hub, so if the election doesn’t end well it could hurt more than just Kenya.

KISUMU, Kenya (Reuters) – Kenyan police clashed with opposition supporters where burning barricades and gangs of youths prevented voting in some towns in an election re-run, seeking to challenge the credibility of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s expected victory.

In the western city of Kisumu, stone-throwing youths heeding opposition leader Raila Odinga’s call for a voter boycott were met by live rounds, tear gas and water cannon three hours after polling stations were meant to have opened. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The election is being closely watched across East Africa, which relies on Kenya as a trade and logistics hub, and in the West where Nairobi is regarded as a bulwark against Islamist militancy in Somalia and civil conflict in South Sudan and Burundi.

“By and large the security situation in the country is OK. Polling stations have been opened in over 90 percent of the country and voting has commenced,” Interior minister Fred Matiang’i told Citizen TV.

In the western town of Migori, another opposition stronghold, several hundred young men milled around on a main road littered with rubble and burning barricades, according to footage on the domestic NTV channel.

The handful of polling officials who pitched up to work in Kisumu, the scene of major ethnic violence after a disputed election in 2007, cowered behind closed doors, unable to distribute any voting material.

Such problems, already acknowledged by judges and the election commission, are likely to trigger legal challenges to the run-off and could stir longer-term instability in a country riven by deep ethnic divisions.

The re-run follows an August vote whose result – a Kenyatta victory – was annulled by the Supreme Court due to procedural irregularities.

In Kisumu Central, constituency returning officer John Ngutai said no voting materials had been distributed and only three of his 400 staff had turned up for work. One nervous official described his work in the city as a “suicide mission”.

“We don’t have any options,” Ngutai told Reuters as he and two presiding officers sorted thousands of ballot papers into piles, work that should have been completed the previous day.

Kisumu businessman Joshua Nyamori, 42, was one of the few voters brave enough to defy Odinga’s stay-away call but said intimidation had put paid to his desire to cast his ballot.

“I know it’s not a popular move,” he said. “Residents fear reprisal from political gangs organized by politicians. This is wrong.”

Call for prayers

KENYA ELECTIONREUTERS/Thomas Mukoya

A decade after 1,200 people were killed over another disputed election, many Kenyans are ready for trouble although on the eve of the vote Odinga backed off previous calls for protests and urged supporters to stay out of the way of police.

“We advise Kenyans who value democracy and justice to hold vigils and prayers away from polling stations, or just stay at home,” he said.

Odinga’s National Super Alliance coalition, which has been accused of harassing polling staff in the run-up to the vote, is likely to present a lack of open polling stations as proof the re-run, organized in less than 60 days, is bogus.

The head of the election commission said last week he could not guarantee a free and fair vote, citing interference from politicians and threats of violence against his colleagues. One election commissioner has quit and fled the country.

Kenyatta, the U.S.-educated son of Kenya’s founding father, has made clear he sees the vote as legitimate. In central Nairobi, where support for the two protagonists is more mixed, early turnout was significantly down on August.

Anti-riot police were patrolling in Kibera and Mathare, two volatile Nairobi slums. Nearly 50 people have been killed by security forces since the August vote.

In a statement issued by the U.S. embassy, foreign missions called for calm from all sides but acknowledged that the vote had been damaging to regional stability.

“Following this election, there must be immediate, sustained, open and transparent dialogue involving all Kenyans to resolve the deep divisions that the electoral process has exacerbated,” it said.

Speaking on the eve of the vote, Kenyatta assured his countrymen and Kenya’s allies that order would be restored.

“I tell all our international partners that we will get through this,” he said. “We cannot remain in a perpetual state of politicking.”
