Enemy submarines were one of the main topics of conversation as Winnie Barker, aged nine, and her mother Martha had lunch in the second-class saloon of Cunard liner Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. It was May 1915, and with the First World War at its height German U-boats were making more and more of an impact in the seas around Britain. And so when the ship came to an abrupt halt with a shudder and began to list, few were in any doubt that a torpedo was to blame. Along with the other 500 diners, Martha and Winnie made their way to the deck. By now Lusitania was listing so badly that it was almost impossible to launch the lifeboats – in the end only six out of 48 of them were successfully put to sea. As the ship went down, mother and daughter held hands and Winnie said: “Don’t worry, mother darling, we shall be saved.” They were sucked under water, Martha lost consciousness and Winnie was torn from her grasp. Tragically, Winnie, who had been wearing a life jacket, was never seen again. But Martha, miraculously, was pulled from the water alive by a fisherman, still clutching her handbag. That very handbag – now owned by Martha’s great granddaughter who lives in the US state of New Jersey – is to go up for auction in New York tomorrow for £7,000. The price tag reflects the significance of the event it relates to. Of the 1,962 passengers and crew members on board the liner, 1,201 were killed, including 130 Americans and three Germans held in the cells. The sinking of the Lusitania, which was briefly the world’s largest passenger ship, sparked outrage on both sides of the Atlantic and turned American public opinion firmly against the Germans, softening it up for entry into the war two years later. One of the most poignant items in the lot being offered by respected auction house Bonhams is a folded letter that Winnie intended for the rest of her family telling them what fun she was having on board the ship. Stained by sea water, it is a heartbreaking reminder of her final moments. The handbag also contains keys to the Barkers’ Lusitania cabin, a pair of girl’s gloves, a deckchair receipt and some two dollar bills. Martha and Winnie were Irish-born but had moved to Trenton, New Jersey, prior to the disaster. After six years in the US, this was their first visit to the old country to visit their relatives. In A moving account given to a local newspaper after the sinking, Martha said: “We were at lunch in the second-class saloon when the ship was struck. The vessel stopped almost dead, shuddered and began to list. Passengers hurried on deck and a gentleman provided my daughter with a life jacket. “The ship was righting herself when it was struck by a second torpedo. The effect of this blow was terrible in the extreme. It was accompanied by a very heavy explosion and the almost immediate settling down of the vessel. “I held my daughter’s hand. She was very brave, saying, ‘Don’t worry, mother darling, we shall be saved.’ “The suction of the ship took us both down. When I recovered consciousness I was on an upturned boat, but I was horrified to find my daughter was no longer with me. “I searched most anxiously for any sign of her but to no purpose.” At Winnie’s funeral, her distraught parents read out a sombre poem in tribute. It read: “No stone shows where, unknown, she rests. No cross marks where she sleeps. A cloud obscures her honoured grave. And death its secrets keep.” Tom Lamb, a books specialist at Bonhams, says: “These small poignant objects, which have been consigned by Martha’s great-granddaughter, pay testimony to that tragic day.” Lady Amelia Windsor posted an image on her Instagram, showing the stunning royal visiting an art gallery. The 22-year-old, who has modelled for Dolce & Gabbana carried a kooky pink woollen bag on her shoulder, with eyes attached to it. Designed by London-based UK designer Anya Hindmarch, the popular bags are part of a series called “The Eyes Collection”. The designer says of the collection: “The iconic Eyes Collection is imagined on accessories of all sizes; from characterful shearling bags to neat leather purses with a playful edge.” Anya Hindmarch, from Essex, has won designer of the year from Glamour magazine on three different years as well as numerous other accolades. She has an MBE for services to the British fashion industry and a CBE was awarded to her in 2017’s New Year Honours. Amelia, who appears to be a fashion fan, poses with the magenta wool shag crossbody bag from the famous brand. The bag is crafted from calf leather and wool, and costs £375 on Farfetch currently. Backpack versions of the bag can cost up to £1,600 and fur versions £1,050. Amelia wore the bag with matching bright pink trousers, a white t-shirt, an orange jacket and brown boots. Her long blonde hair appeared unbrushed as she smiled at the camera. Lady Amelia Windsor’s Instagram recently featured images from the royal’s New Year’s celebrations and her Christmas holiday. Where does Lady Amelia Windsor live? Lady Amelia is studying her third year at the University of Edinburgh, where she takes French and Italian. However, according to Harper’s Bazaar the part-time model was living between Rome and Paris this year as part of her studies. In January 2017 the Mail On Sunday reported that Lady Amelia had confided in friends that she is moving to either Bristol or Brighton when she leaves University next year. Both towns are in commuting distance from the capital, and are known for their cool young creative residents. Queen Elizabeth, 91, has a number of rules when travelling on state visits abroad, having travelled to many countries during her 65-year reign. This includes how many people are in her entourage to her secret jet lag cure. Within her iconic Launer handbag, there is one item the Queen always takes abroad with her. The item is one that not many may think of using. Within her handbag is a portable hook that she always takes when on visits outside of the palace. This is so Her Royal Highness can put her bag on the hook if there when at an event. Jean Willis, one of the Queen’s cousins was quoted in The Lady magazine in 2012 stating: “I watched the Queen open her handbag and remove a white suction cup and discretely spit into it. “The Queen then attached the cup to the underside of the of the table. The cup had a hook on it, and she attached her handbag to it.” The Queen is known for having other items in her handbag at all times including money. A crisp £5 note that is often folded neatly to put into the church collection basket. A source revealed to the Express in 2015: “Her butler irons a five pound note into a little square by folding it until you can only see her face.” As well as this, it also includes reading glasses, a pen, lipstick and tissues. It isn’t the only thing the Queen must always have when travelling abroad. She must also have a black outfit at all times in the case of a royal death. This is so that the appropriate attire can always be worn in the case of an emergency. The Queen in 1952, was abroad without one upon the death of her father, George VI.

Getting dressed for work as a woman can be difficult; it takes longer to do than the guy who can throw on a suit, and most of the options available are missing the mark between flattering and “cute.” Instead of making the clothes women want and need, legacy brands have yet to adapt to accommodate the new lifestyles of modern women.
Totes need smarter, more commuter-friendly designs, and well-made classics in premium materials sound much better than the constant churning out of trends in cheap materials—you know, the ones you hate to be in more than a couple of hours, let alone from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (or however long your work day really takes).
For many women, even spending that precious, limited free time in a dressing room to find enough different combinations to wear to work is both exhausting and unappealing — a thought that hasn’t made a large enough impact on retail, yet. Instead of expending more of their energy and time working with the complexities of the office, don’t many of us wish we could just outsource the problem to a professional who gets it, instead? So we can spend our free time doing what we like, like hanging out with our friends, our family, or even getting ahead in our career.
These six women’s workwear brands, if you don’t know them already, will address each of these concerns and a couple more. Here’s proof that some people do get it, and thankfully we can spend the time you might not have to find them for you.
Dagne Dover Instagram
Dagne Dover is a relatively new company that has gained notoriety and a bona fide cult following for bags that master sophisticated leather styles and conscious design aimed to simplify the lives of women on the move. Satchels, totes, backpacks, and other products feature commuter-friendly designs without sacrificing style.
On the outside, the bags are beautiful constructions of high-quality materials like leather in flattering neutral shades. We’ve covered both their Dakota Backpack and Classic Tote in depth, and our unanimous opinion is that Dagne Dover is doing something special. The design team has anticipated your needs, your lifestyle, and the things you’ll carry and delivered with smarter execution than we’ve seen most anywhere else.
“It’s no longer good enough to just be ‘arm candy’. Nowadays we expect the services and products we use to multitask, to be data-driven and to work harder,” Mash told Business Insider. “Dagne Dover is the only brand in the handbag market that does so while continuing to be stylish and organized.”
MM. LaFleur Instagram
MM.LaFleur works off the same basic assumption that President Barack Obama and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg did when they made the decision to pare down their wardrobe selections to only two colors of suits or the same grey shirt for public appearances. There are simply too many other important decisions to make.
Instead of trying to churn out trends, MM.LaFleur is thoughtfully constructing and improving upon the classics that will become your wardrobe staples.
MM.LaFleur was created to cater to women whose work days can look more like 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and who might not want to devote their limited free time to trying on work dresses in a changing room. As a result, they offer a subscription service called the Bento Box, which is a box of workwear staples handpicked for each customer by a discerning MM stylist based on a short quiz of workwear preferences, prices, and office atmosphere. Don’t want to think about the complexities of officewear and wish you could just outsource it? Done.
Women can try on their selections at home, keep what they like, and text a number to get UPS to pick up and return what they don’t. They’re only charged for what they keep, and 70% of MM.LaFleur’s customers are repeat clients.

Citizen’s Mark
Citizen’s Mark might be the one blazer brand to know. While working at the UN in Geneva, Switzerland, Citizen’s Mark founder Cynthia Salim realized at 23 the same thing every working woman inevitably does: It’s hard to find high-quality women’s workwear that looks credible.
Salim wanted to create the staples she wished existed for a career that the fashion industry didn’t seem to know she and her female peers had. But she quickly realized that the problem ran much deeper than expected: When she contacted wool mills to produce for her, they asked if she’d like men’s or women’s fabrics. When she couldn’t find a satisfactory suit factory in the US, most European factories explained that they only did men’s tailoring. When even materials and machines are gendered to reserve the highest quality for menswear, no wonder the market for women was so dissatisfying.
All of Salim’s blazers are subsequently made with “male” fabrics in factories that specialize in “male” tailoring. The result is stunning. I reviewed the company and two of the blazers myself, and Citizen’s Mark is unlike anything else I’ve ever owned.
To further reflect the working woman Salim set out to design for, Citizen’s Mark contributes to a responsible global supply chain with responsibility, sustainability, and transparency.

The 47-year-old stepped out of a car wearing a huge smile, a cream flower embossed dress with an empire neckline and one very colourfully jacket.
The collarless coat was covered in 3D flowers of every variety and in an assortment of colours.

She paired it with strappy sandals in the same colour.
This would-be thief was stopped by karma when he attempted to steal a woman’s handbag.
The thief was served swift justice when he grabbed the personal property off a woman’s back.
The thief, whose face is covered with a motorcycle helmet, speeds away on a moped.
However, his path to escape will not be so easy.
A male companion of the victim springs into action, chasing the thief down the street.
However, he doesn’t need to run long – as the man on the moped is soon stopped.
A green taxi car stops and begins to slowly turn.
The thief attempts to move past the car by turn right, but the car squashes him against a wall.
The thief can be seen, flying off the bike and into the wall in the video posted online recently.
Some bike thieves also face justice when they attempted to steal a car that had been boobytrapped.
A clip which has gone viral on Twitter shows two men cutting a bike up and reattaching it with duct tape.
At first, it isn’t clear what is happening – but then the clip cuts to show a bike leaning up against a tree in a park, with seemingly no-one around.
The camera turns to show two men who are secretly filming the bike, watching as someone approaches it and rides it away.
But because the bike has been cut in half, the would-be thief soon regrets his decision to try and take the bike.
Another driver was involved in a shocking crash after speeding past traffic.
The driver loses control of the vehicle, and the car flips dramatically over several times.
CCTV footage taken in a petrol station captured the moment the robber stole from the lady.
The clip shows a woman filling her tank with petrol in a quiet petrol garage.
A man clad in black leathers and wearing a motorcycle helmet can be seen creeping into view on the left side of the screen.
He stays low so that the woman won’t notice him over her car roof – and his intentions soon become clear.
The man slowly and carefully opens the car door and grabs the woman’s bag, which had been sitting on the seat.
He then slams the door shut and runs onto his bike, before tearing off at speed.
But he is so caught up in his success, he doesn’t pay attention to the road – and drives straight into a wall just behind the petrol station.
His bike crashes to the ground, trapping him underneath it, and his helmet, which he had been wearing loosely, falls off his head and rolls away.
The woman looks around, shocked at what has just happened.
The clip was uploaded to Imgur, where is got over 196,000 views.
Commenters have no sympathy for the man, and one wrote: “Yey, instant comeuppance” (sic).
Another wrote: “Horrible, loot & scoot”.
