The BBC has since revealed that the broadcaster was flooded with over 100 complaints from viewers who were unimpressed by Munchetty and Stayt’s comments.

The broadcaster’s most recent complaint report stated: “We received complaints from people unhappy with a comment Charlie Stayt made about the flag in the background of an interview and Naga Munchetty’s subsequent activity on social media.”

A statement from the BBC added: “At the end of a long, serious interview with the Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary Robert Jennick, Charlie Stays made an off-the-cuff remark about the size of the flag behind Mr Jenrick,” the BBC’s response began.

“It was meant as a light-hearted, off-the-cuff comment and no offence or disrespect was intended.

“Naga and Charlie have been spoken to and reminded of their responsibilities, including the BBC’s impartiality and social media guidelines.”

Edwina Currie slaps down Piers Morgan in fierce defence of Hancock ‘Would’ve done same!’ https://briefnews.eu/edwina-currie-slaps-down-piers-morgan-in-fierce-defence-of-hancock-wouldve-done-same/ https://briefnews.eu/edwina-currie-slaps-down-piers-morgan-in-fierce-defence-of-hancock-wouldve-done-same/#respond Thu, 25 Feb 2021 07:49:38 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/edwina-currie-slaps-down-piers-morgan-in-fierce-defence-of-hancock-wouldve-done-same/

During Tuesday’s episode, Piers Morgan and Matt Hancock became embroiled in a fiery row when the Health Secretary claimed he and his team should be “thanked” for their roles in combatting the coronavirus pandemic. Inevitably, Piers didn’t see things the same way and furiously blasted the MP for being “disingenuous” and “patronising”. However, when Piers discussed the moment with a panel of guests on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, Edwina Currie was the one who leapt to Mr Hancock’s defence.

“With all due respect, Piers, if I can come in, he didn’t ask to be thanked personally, he asked for his team to be thanked,” Edwina furiously snapped at Piers after he played the GMB clip again.

“And actually a lot of us are very thankful indeed,” she continued. “18 million people who’ve had their vaccines, including me,

“It’s running at about three million a week. Somebody had to order those jabs, somebody had to pay for them, somebody had to take the decision -“

Piers began to speak over Edwina to try and make his case, but the journalist wasn’t going to let him without a fight as she hit back: “Let me talk.”

However, Piers insisted Mr Hancock wasn’t behind the vaccine feat Edwina had suggested: “That was Kate Bingham, (rather than Mr Hancock).”

The two then clashed as Edwina refused to let Piers jump back into the debate: “Hang on, Edwina, that was a non-Government – you can’t just say that without me coming in and saying that was not Matt Hancock.”

But Edwina felt this supported her point as she barked at Piers: “That’s his team! He asked for his team to be recognised,

“Anf I think indeed it should,” Edwina continued. “I think we should recognise all the efforts gone into all the genomic research, that was funded by the Government.”

“Piers, darling, you are a very responsible person, I agree with about 95 percent of what you say,

“Had you been in charge of PPE back in the Spring of last year, you’d have done exactly the same.

“You would’ve defied all the critic, you’d have failed to have done all the paperwork I’m sure,

“And you would’ve made sure that we got what we could at that time,” she insisted.

When it comes to losing the video games, the sportsman said he “wouldn’t get angry” and didn’t know what Morgan was hinting towards when he suggested the cricketer might get annoyed if he was beaten.

Speaking about his mindset of the pitch and wanting to win, the sportsman said: “I got rid of the ‘this is how I play’ excuse massively.

“In terms of always looking to be aggressive or attacking. When I realised that was just an excuse for when failures happen, I was never going to learn from it.

“Once I got rid of that, I had more understanding of the game situation and when I need to change the way I play in terms of sometimes being a little bit more defensive because, in the long term, that could be better for the team,” he told talkSport.

BBC Breakfast viewers furious at Matt Hancock holidays grilling: ‘There’s a pandemic on!’ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-viewers-furious-at-matt-hancock-holidays-grilling-theres-a-pandemic-on/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-viewers-furious-at-matt-hancock-holidays-grilling-theres-a-pandemic-on/#respond Thu, 11 Feb 2021 08:42:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-viewers-furious-at-matt-hancock-holidays-grilling-theres-a-pandemic-on/

Mr Hancock, 43, sparked uproar a couple of weeks ago when he told the public he had booked a holiday to Cornwall for the summer, despite the UK still being in a national lockdown. With Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, 52, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, 56, urging people not to make plans at the moment, the Health Secretary was put under the spotlight by BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt, 58. Taking to Twitter, those watching the BBC news segment at home weren’t too impressed with the line of questioning.

One wrote on the social media platform: “Well @BBCBreakfast are really as rubbish, as usual, this morning. Obsessed with this c**p about booking holidays.

“There is a pandemic on, or has nobody told you yet #bbcbreakfast #bbc,” they continued, with a second adding: “Man books holiday on the off chance he can take his family on holiday…as we all want to do. Not news, move on…#bbcbreakfast.”

A third commented: “Do we really give a s**t about whether someone has booked their holiday or not!! #BBCBreakfast Just how pedantic can it get!!”

“What a load of s**t useless questions #BBCBreakfast,” a fourth remarked.

However, not everyone was opposed to the direction of the interview, as another added to the debate: “Well done Charlie, proper interview with @MattHancock not interrupting but coming back to the original question if it’s not answered #bbcbreakfast.”

‘UK vaccine works’ Matt Hancock hits back at EU ’12 wk dose gap gives STRONGER protection’ https://briefnews.eu/uk-vaccine-works-matt-hancock-hits-back-at-eu-12-wk-dose-gap-gives-stronger-protection/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-vaccine-works-matt-hancock-hits-back-at-eu-12-wk-dose-gap-gives-stronger-protection/#respond Wed, 03 Feb 2021 09:49:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/uk-vaccine-works-matt-hancock-hits-back-at-eu-12-wk-dose-gap-gives-stronger-protection/

France has followed Germany and Austria’s decision to not administer the AstraZeneca vaccine to anyone over the age of 64, stating that there was not enough data on the Oxford vaccine’s effectiveness on the over-65 age group. However, the Health Secretary backed the UK’s decision and stated that the three-month gap between AstraZeneca doses leads to greater protection from the coronavirus.

Mr Hancock said: “The news overnight on the Oxford vaccine demonstrates that the vaccine protects you and it helps to cut the transmission of the disease across the whole community.

“It shows that the vaccine works and it works well.

“This figure of a two-thirds reduction in transmission is better than I expected.

“It is really good news for everybody and it just shows that the strategy has been right of backing those vaccines.

“The other finding in this report is that with the 12-week gap between the first and second dose you actually get a stronger overall protection than if you have a shorter gap.”

On Wednesday morning, Mr Hancock also admitted that the Pfizer vaccine needs two doses in order to reach the desired efficacy levels against the South African coronavirus variant.

The Health Secretary stated that some protection against the variant is good news as he had originally feared the UK’s vaccines would not work at all against it.

He said: “The fact that there is some protection of the South African variant is good news, there was a fear that the vaccines would not work at all against that variant whereas there does seem to be some protection.”

He added: “Of course against these new variants we made need boosters of a slightly adjusted vaccine as well in the same way we do for flu each year.

“We are working with the companies on developing those and ensuring that they can get regulated and be used more quickly than the first time around.”

Matt Hancock breaks down in tears on GMB over first COVID vaccine ‘Still got worry’ https://briefnews.eu/matt-hancock-breaks-down-in-tears-on-gmb-over-first-covid-vaccine-still-got-worry/ https://briefnews.eu/matt-hancock-breaks-down-in-tears-on-gmb-over-first-covid-vaccine-still-got-worry/#respond Tue, 08 Dec 2020 11:55:02 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/matt-hancock-breaks-down-in-tears-on-gmb-over-first-covid-vaccine-still-got-worry/

Matt Hancock, 42, spoke on Good Morning Britain on the day the first Pfizer vaccine was administered to members of the public at University Hospital, Coventry. After watching the moment a gentleman name William Shakespeare spoke about receiving the coronavirus vaccine, the Health Secretary could be seen wiping away tears. Host Piers Morgan, 55, said the politician was visibly moved by the scenes during the interview on the ITV news show.

The Health Secretary said as he tried to hold his composure: “It’s been such a tough year for so many people.

“There’s William Shakespeare putting it so simply for everybody that we can get on with our lives and there is still a few months to go.

“I’ve still got this worry we can’t blow it now, Piers. We’ve still got to get the vaccine to millions of people.

“We’ve got to keep sticking by the rules,” Mr Hancock urged viewers at home as he admitted the fight against the virus was not yet over.

“There is so much work that has gone into this and it makes you proud to be British,” the Government minister said.

Taking to Twitter, viewers commented on the emotional moment as one wrote: “It reminded me that he’s had a pretty tough time of it trying to sort it out.”

Another added: “A very emotional morning let’s all hope this is the beginning of the end of this terrible virus. Well done this government and NHS for being the first.”

Whilst a third commented on the social media platform: “Awww I felt sorry for him. I think the pressure over the year has shown.”

“Such an emotional moment. Never thought I would cry with a politician, Piers and Susanna. Fabulous interview. Thanks for fighting for all off us,” a fourth remarked.

“It looks like such a small thing but it means so much because this is the route out of this pandemic,” the Health Secretary continued.

“By God, we need one and I think Margaret was absolutely brilliant and showed stoicism and everything we should be proud of.

“I am so proud of the team who have made this happen. They have worked so hard and not just hard but really smart.

“Firstly, the team who spotted this was a really promising vaccine and we bought it early, we were the first country to put in an order.”

Mr Hancock added: “Normally regulators get flack but HRMA has done a fantastic job because they’ve done all of the safety checks that they always do.

“But they’ve done them all at the same time instead of one after the other which has meant we have become the first country in the world [to begin vaccinations].

“This year has been so terrible for so many people and the sacrifices people have made and the losses we’ve all suffered.

“To have this moment showing the way out [of this pandemic] is just absolutely fantastic,” the Health Secretary explained.

“How many people, how quickly after getting a test do you get the results back?”

Hancock replied: “230,000, that’s people. Capacity over a quarter of a million and the majority get them back the next day, the vast majority get them back in 48 hours.”

BBC backlash as viewers slam Dan Walker interview with Matt Hancock ‘so frustrating!’ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-backlash-as-viewers-slam-dan-walker-interview-with-matt-hancock-so-frustrating/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-backlash-as-viewers-slam-dan-walker-interview-with-matt-hancock-so-frustrating/#respond Wed, 19 Aug 2020 20:27:40 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bbc-backlash-as-viewers-slam-dan-walker-interview-with-matt-hancock-so-frustrating/

BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker was the one who took charge of the interview with Matt Hancock this morning as he probed the Health Secretary over the Government’s latest response to the coronavirus pandemic. On the agenda for Walker were topics such as local lockdowns, the progression of track and trace and fines for those flouting lockdown. However, despite cutting Mr Hancock off during a debate about Leicester’s lockdown, BBC viewers felt Walker could’ve grilled the MP further.

There were a number of talking points to take away from Mr Hancock’s interview on BBC Breakfast this morning.

Arguably one the biggest, however, came when Walker probed the Health Secretary about the test and system and its efficiency.

Mr Hancock told BBC Breakfast: “Yes, the test and trace system is working very effectively,

“We set a goal that by the start of september, we should be able to reach 80 percent of the contacted positive cases, last week that figure was 79.7”

Other issues to catch the eye of viewers was Mr Hancock’s optimism surrounding Leicester’s response to the local lockdown – despite the fact places like Oldham may be entering similar scenarios of their own.

Mr Hancock also detailed to Walker his plans for “strengthening fines and enforcement available” against those flouting lockdown.

The MP revealed there were plans to “double” the toughness of the current fines.

Mr Hancock signed off the interview by defending the appointment of Dido Harding as “the best person who could be doing her job now”.

A third weighed in: “Dan I really like your work and I know you want to keep the govt coming on to @BBCBreakfast,

“But sometimes you have to be tougher. Today @MattHancock got away with murder – simple deflection and mispresentation of facts. It’s dispiriting to watch.”

While a fourth brutally added: “@BBCBreakfast Dan Walker demonstrates in his interview with Matt Hancock that he is a sports reporter, nothing else.”

With a fifth tweeting: “Where @BBCBreakfast fall down is they don’t go in for the kill. Dan should maybe have asked “Why is she absolutely the best person, given her long record of failure in previous jobs? Perhaps he should’ve also listed them.”

BBC Breakfast continues daily at 6am on BBC One.

Piers Morgan explodes at Dan Walker as he rages over Matt Hancock interview: ‘Blew it!’ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-explodes-at-dan-walker-as-he-rages-over-matt-hancock-interview-blew-it/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-explodes-at-dan-walker-as-he-rages-over-matt-hancock-interview-blew-it/#respond Wed, 01 Jul 2020 04:28:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-explodes-at-dan-walker-as-he-rages-over-matt-hancock-interview-blew-it/

Pier Morgan, 55, was seething with Dan Walker, 43, as BBC Breakfast hosts continue to speak with senior Government ministers in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. With the Conservative Cabinet boycotting Good Morning Britain, the journalist felt his colleague was lacking when it came to questioning Matt Hancock, 41. As his co-host Susanna Reid, 49, tried to tell viewers what the Health Secretary had been saying, the outspoken presenter declared: “Jump in,” as he was frustrated with his rival.

The presenters are known for having a rivalry, often taking to Twitter to gloat about each their respective show’s ratings.

Watching Walker interviewing Hancock about the daily coronavirus testing figures, which haven’t been released to the public for the past 39 days, Morgan couldn’t hold back his fury.

With a clip of the Health Secretary’s response being shown to ITV viewers and his interviewer struggling to get a word in edge ways, the shot returned to the Life Stories star who immediately provided commentary on the moment.

“Get in there Walker, for goodness sake man. He’s talking complete nonsense,” the journalist declared.

Reid jumped in as she remarked: “Oh my goodness. Now you’re ranting at presenters on other programmes.”

Morgan continued: “Because he’s [Walker] getting the interviews because he won’t jump in and say, ‘What are you talking about Health Secretary?’

“What could be a more important bit of data than how many people are being tested? What could possibly be more important?

“And yet you pretend it’s meaningless,” he continued as his rant turned on towards the politician and his lack of explanation.

It wasn’t long before Walker responded to his colleagues outburst and shared his response on Twitter in view of his 662,100 followers.

“That’s your job. Not to sit back and tweet all the self-important rubbish you [do],” the journalist added.

“Don’t let him get away with it,” Morgan blasted as he concluded his rant about his colleague’s interviewing technique.

When the host exploded the first time, he also vented about the Health Secretary’s answer to Walker’s questioning on coronavirus testing.

“This is the same Health Secretary who in the middle of March, presided over the end of community testing because that was no longer appropriate.”

“What does this mean? That the number of people being tested is meaningless? I wish I could ask you,” the host continued.

Reid added: “Surely the amount of information you get – accurate information – the number of people actually being tested would actually be very, very helpful.”

Taking the reins again, Morgan opined: “Unbelievable. It’s no longer meaningful to know how many people are being tested for coronavirus in this country.

“There couldn’t be anything more significant or meaningful than knowing the number of people being tested and for the Health Secretary to get away with that blather on the BBC is utterly shocking.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekday at 6am on ITV.

Dan Walker grills Matt Hancock over ‘slow’ Leicester COVID response: ‘Taken so long’ https://briefnews.eu/dan-walker-grills-matt-hancock-over-slow-leicester-covid-response-taken-so-long/ https://briefnews.eu/dan-walker-grills-matt-hancock-over-slow-leicester-covid-response-taken-so-long/#respond Tue, 30 Jun 2020 07:15:49 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/dan-walker-grills-matt-hancock-over-slow-leicester-covid-response-taken-so-long/

Walker probed: “So, to the thousands of parents watching this morning who have been encouraged to send their children back to school in various parts of England, because of the low impact on children, what is your message to them this morning?”

Hancock went on: “The reason I said that about Leicester is because there is an unusually high incidence of children, and we have always said if your child is in reception, or year one or year six you should still send them to school, even in Leicester.”

Later in the conversation, Walker interrupted and said: “Jonathan Ashworth said in the Commons that you knew about the spike three days ago and that there should have been a faster response to flare-ups.

“Why did it take so long to put these measures into place?”
