Because the impeachment inquiry against President Trump thus far is “lacking in pizzazz” (as one NBC News wonk put it), “dull,” and “is not The Masked Singer,” Saturday Night Live aimed to up the drama in soapy style this weekend. In “Days of Our Impeachment” — which is arguably the best thing to happen for NBC’s Days of Our Lives since, well, this — the inquiry was presented, with very limited success, as a twisty daytime serial starring Cecily Strong as former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, Mikey Day as the “Cross-Examiner With a Mysterious Brain Injury” (aka jacket-averse Ohio representative Jim Jordan), and special guest Jon Hamm as “career diplomat” Bill Taylor, a “low-key Daddy” who eventually found himself in a heated clinch with “telenovela sensation Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.” The cold open was ultimately overpopulated (Kenan Thompson as Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett?!), with none of the half-hearted impressions really landing, save for Kate McKinnon’s always slithery Rudy Giuliani. Heidi Gardner, though, merited some laughs as an onlooker prone to fainting over each twist. What did you think of “the first soap where you can’t imagine any of the people in it having sex”? We’ll update this post with full video later; until then, here are two clips: Did you notice a familiar voice amid the Technicolor chaos of Legion‘s Season 2 premiere? Unlike David Haller, you’re not hearing things: That really was the former Don Draper himself, Emmy winner Jon Hamm, serving as narrator for the premiere’s surreal animated interludes. “There’s a narrator throughout the whole season in places, for those sort of educational segments,” creator Noah Hawley explains to TVLine. “So I knew we needed a voice, but I didn’t feel like it was the voice of one of our characters.” He wanted a distinctive voice to serve as his narrator, he says, like Alec Baldwin’s in The Royal Tenenbaums. “And Jon just has that voice,” he notes.

So, what’s going on behind the scenes of The New Mutants? Director Josh Boone‘s horror-tinged X-Men movie has undergone numerous delays and rumors have swirled that up to 50% of the film needs to be reshot. Whether this was damage control or 20th Century Fox attempting to simply make a good film into a great one has remained cloaked in secrecy. Now, a new report sheds some light on exactly what’s going on with this film.
Oh, and it also reveals that Mad Men star Jon Hamm was, at one point, going to appear as classic X-Men villain Mr. Sinister. But not anymore.
The news comes from Jeff Sneider of The Tracking Board, who has a strong record with this kind of reporting. So while you should take this with all of the salt usually applied to anonymously sourced movie scooping, I’d feel pretty good about trusting this one.
While the bulk of this report deals with the behind-the-scenes goings-on with Boone and Fox (more on that in a moment), the big geeky bombshell is the news that Hamm was on the verge of joining the X-Men movie universe. Here’s what you need to know:
Meanwhile, remember the Essex Corporation that was teased at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse? Well not only was New Mutants going to feature that mysterious company, but The Tracking Board has learned that Jon Hamm was originally going to appear as Mr. Sinister in a tag at the end of New Mutants, and Boone filmed material that led up to that reveal, only for Fox to change their minds after shooting had been completed.
Interestingly, the report adds that the tag will still exist, but it will be a completely different villain, this one played by Antonio Banderas. Also of note when it comes to deleted New Mutants characters: the character of Warlock, a mutant mechanical organism with the power to infect living creatures with a techno-organic virus, was in the original script, but was cut because he would have been too expensive to realize on screen.
Does this mean we’ll never get to see Mr. Sinister, an immortal telepath and iconic X-Men baddie, in a movie? I doubt it. He’s too major of a bad guy and he’d look great on the big screen. And you know what? Jon Hamm is a great fit for a genetically altered scientific genius with a bone to pick with mutant kind. Maybe we’ll see him in another movie yet.
The bulk of The Tracking Board’s report focuses on the film’s complex and sometimes backwards production. It seems that the horror-centric first trailer for The New Mutants wasn’t entirely reflective of the film’s tone. In fact, it was cut together after the surprise blockbuster success of It last year, when Fox rightfully noticed that audiences were hungry for frightening genre fare that didn’t look like it was made for two crumpled $ 5 bills. (The original, less scary cut of the film reportedly tested quite well.)
So the reshoots are focused on making the film scarier and gnarlier, elements that Boone was originally forced to tone down during production. In other words, the silver lining to all of this chaos may be that Boone gets to make a movie closer to what he wanted to make in the first place, before a Fox-appointed writers’ room drastically reworked the original script he wrote with Knate Lee.
As of now, The New Mutants is set to open on August 2, 2019.

Charmed fans, who’s in the mood to orb down memory lane?
Let’s be honest: With all this talk of the Charmed reboot — which many fans, and even one of the original show’s stars, are actively trying to vanquish — it’s hard not to get nostalgic about the show that started it all. And when you look back at its 178 episodes, you start to notice things you didn’t before, including how many famous faces crossed paths with the Halliwells.
From Amy Adams and Ashley Tisdale to Jon Hamm and Norman Reedus, the Charmed Ones’ version of San Francisco was apparently crawling with actors destined to become household names. And while not every person in our gallery is an A-lister, there’s a good chance that regular TVLine readers will recognize most of the 40+ faces we’ve assembled.
A quick note: We’ve omitted anyone who was a series regular (i.e. Kaley Cuoco and Julian McMahon), one of whom we couldn’t forget even if we tried. And, oh, how hard we’ve tried.
Browse our gallery of famous Charmed guest stars — you can click here for direct access — then drop a comment below: Which one was your favorite?

In Aardvark, Jenny Slate plays a therapist who begins a relationship with Jon Hamm, the brother of one of her patients (Zachary Quinto). But while Quinto’s character is the one in therapy, Hamm might be the person with issues. In the Aardvark trailer, the lesson to be learned is: never date Jon Hamm, no matter how handsome and mysterious he is.
What a curious thing this Aardvark trailer is. The presence of the very funny Jenny Slate at first makes one think this might be a comedy, but there’s a distinct sexy thriller vibe going on here. I’ve seen Aardvark described as a “dramedy,” but the tone and cinematography on display in this trailer hint at something a bit more serious. See for yourself.
Here’s the Aardvark synopsis:
Emily Milburton’s (Jenny Slate) newest therapy patient is Josh Norman (Zachary Quinto), an emotionally challenged introvert who suffers from increasingly volatile hallucinations. Most pressing though, is his estranged relationship with his brother, Craig (Jon Hamm), a famous TV actor who just so happens to be in town for a visit. So what’s the worst that could happen when Craig shows up on Emily’s doorstep?
I really hope there isn’t some silly twist at the end that reveals Jon Hamm isn’t actually real, but rather one of Zachary Quinto’s multiple personalities, because…that would be bad, and the type of nonsense twist that should’ve gone out of style in the 1990s. That said, I’m a huge fan of Jenny Slate, and I want her to star in all the movies all the time, so I’m excited to see her as the lead here, especially since this doesn’t seem like the typical role she usually plays. Perhaps this is the beginning of Slate branching out and taking on more roles (like in the upcoming Venom, for instance). Make it happen, Hollywood.
In addition to Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto and Jon Hamm, Aardvark also stars Tonya Pinkins, Sheila Vand, Marin Ireland and Peter Grosz. It marks the directorial debut of Brian Shoaf, who also wrote the screenplay. Aardvark played at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, where it didn’t garner the best reviews (it’s currently sitting at an alarming 13% on Rotten Tomatoes), but I’m a big enough fan of the cast here to give the film a shot. Unless it really does turn out that Jon Hamm is a figment of Zachary Quinto’s imagination. Then I’m going to be upset.
Aardvark opens on April 13, 2018 in limited release.

Jon Hamm and Rosamund Pike, two talented actors who deserve a lot more work, star in Beirut, a new drama from Session 9 director Brad Anderson. The first Beirut trailer offers a pulse-pounding look at the film.
Jon Hamm delivered a consistently fantastic performance for years on Mad Men, and Rosamund Pike performed jaw-dropping work in Gone Girl, yet neither of these actors seem to have quite as big a career as they deserve. Now, Hamm and Pike are together in Beirut, a new thriller from Brad Anderson, the filmmaker behind Session 9 and The Machinist. The script comes courtesy of Tony Gilroy, who also wrote the Bourne trilogy and Michael Clayton. The first Beirut trailer can be seen below.
This is a fairly intense trailer. It’s also a bit…muddled? There’s a lot of information here, to the point where entire plotlines are literally being spelled out in words across the screen (THE AMERICANS WANT TO KEEP THEIR SECRETS, THE ISRAELIS WANT TO RAISE THE STAKES!). That said, Anderson is an impressive filmmaker – Session 9 remains one of my all-time favorite horror movies, although Beirut looks very far removed from that. In the film, which is set in the 1980s, Hamm plays a former diplomat still grieving the death of his family. He gets called back into action to help rescue a former colleague. Pike plays an undercover CIA agent, who, from the looks of this trailer, spends a good portion of the movie lounging around, saying droll things and shooting cutting glances at people.
Beirut was originally announced back in 2015, when it was known by the title High Wire Act. The film began shooting in 2016, which might raise an eyebrow or two – usually when a movie takes this long to find its way to the screen, there are some issues. Or I could just be reading too much into things, and Beirut could turn out to be a top-notch political thriller. We shall see!
In addition to Hamm and Pike, Beirut also stars Dean Norris, Shea Whigham, Larry Pine, and Mark Pellegrino. Here’s the official synopsis:
A U.S. diplomat (Jon Hamm) flees Lebanon in 1972 after a tragic incident at his home. Ten years later, he is called back to war-torn Beirut by CIA operatives (Rosamund Pike) to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind.
Beirut will premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival this month before being released in theaters on April 13, 2018.

As previously reported, the Mad Men alum will assume the role of archangel Gabriel. The photo below, released on Thursday, features our first glimpse of Hamm as God’s impeccably dressed messenger.

As a powerful oil market mover, the EIA needs to have “more sophisticated” forecasts about U.S. shale production, because overly optimistic expectations depress oil prices and disadvantages the U.S. market, shale billionaire and Continental Resources chief executive Harold Hamm said in an interview with Bloomberg published on Thursday.
The EIA is “a very powerful market mover, and so it’s necessary they understand all of these things,” said Hamm who is scheduled to take part in an EIA webinar on crude oil production forecasts later on Thursday.
“EIA is on that world stage with us, as the swing producer in the world, and so it’s going to require better, more sophisticated methods of forecasting — more so than ever before,” Hamm told Bloomberg.
According to the billionaire oil executive, the EIA needs to hear “meaningful feedback” from the shale producers and oilfield service providers about their production challenges.
“It’s pretty easy to get enamored” by technology, and “some people tend to go too far with it,” Hamm told Bloomberg.
Over the past few months, Hamm has been one of the most vocal critics of EIA’s overly optimistic forecasts for U.S. oil production.
On September 14, Hamm told CNBC that he was concerned with EIA’s over-forecasting, and said that as the unbiased authority on supply in America, the Energy Information Administration needs “the same tools that we have in the industry.”
A week later, Hamm said that “EIA over-forecast what U.S. production was going to be this year by about 100 percent,” adding that the EIA had been revising its production estimates down, but by a much more moderate rate than the actual decline in production.
Earlier this year, when OPEC was just two months into the production cut deal, Hamm warned that if the U.S. oil industry embarked on another spending spree, it could “kill” the market. Production could go pretty high, but it should be in “a measured way, or else we kill the market,” Hamm said in early March.

Amazon’s quest to hire top-tier actors for its original shows is still in full swing. The internet giant has revealed that Mad Men star Jon Hamm is joining the main cast of Good Omens, the episodic adaptation of the novel penned by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. Appropriately for the former Don Draper, he’ll play Gabriel — Gaiman describes the character as the “good-looking, charismatic and impeccably dressed” archangel that serves as a foil to his more earthly counterpart Aziraphale.
He’s not the only big name in the cast given that Michael Sheen (Aziraphale) and David Tennant (the demon Crowley) are already on deck. And this isn’t Hamm’s first streaming rodeo, either. You’d recognize him in Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.
However, the jump to Good Omens underscores just how fiercely competitive the streaming video market has become. Where the mere act of scoring a major actor for an online show was a big deal a couple of years ago, streaming video is now big enough that it’s more a question of which service gets their attention. In other words, the internet video space is becoming more like… well, Hollywood. Top-flight talent is more of a mainstay, and actors definitely won’t be loyal to any one distributor or studio.
