Author Ann Leckie may not be the first to explore the consequences of ruling sentient beings and dueling AIs within a book, though her award-winning sci-fi novel Ancillary Justice and its sequels suggested there were still new storytelling ideas in the conceit. For instance, what if that dystopian-future lens was applied to the fantasy genre?

The answer comes in Leckie’s newest book, The Raven Tower, and it’s the first in a fantasy series that focuses on mysterious gods and the kingdoms they watch over. It’s a challenging first installment that will capture the interest of fantasy nerds if they can grasp all of this world’s moving parts—including some that the gods themselves don’t fully understand.

The actor, who played Jim Moriarty alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock, appeared in the Shakespeare theatre production in London last year.

The production also stars Angus Wright as Claudius, Jessica Brown Findlay as Ophelia and Juliet Stevenson as Gertrude.

Directed by Robert Icke, the modern-dress show was filmed during the 2017 run at the Almeida Theatre before it was transferred to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre for a limited season following the sell-out run.

Now a televised version will air on BBC2 tonight.

When does BBC’s Hamlet with Andrew Scott air?

BBC Two viewers will get front row seats to the stunning production tonight, with Hamlet to air at 9pm on BBC2 on Saturday, March 31.

The broadcast promises “a front-row seat at the innovative production”.

BBC2 Controller Patrick Holland said, “Andrew Scott’s Hamlet is utterly thrilling. His performance makes each familiar word of the play feel like it is being newly discovered.

“The staging in a modern-day Denmark makes for a startlingly resonant and challenging production. I am delighted that it is coming to BBC2.”

The show saw a sell-out run at the almeida, before it moved to the Harold Pinter where it was equally packed every night.

In her five-star review for WhatsOnStage, Sarah Crompton said Andrew Scott provided “an outstanding performance on a truly memorable night.”

Director Robert Icke said: “It has been a real joy to work with such a gifted and dedicated company of actors on bringing this most-famous play to audiences in 2017.

“The production has been on a wonderful journey from the Almeida to the West End, and I am very much looking forward to this next step on BBC Two.

“To be able to offer our version of Hamlet to as wide and diverse an audience as possible has always been of paramount importance to us, and now we are thrilled to be able to bring it to people across the country.”

The programme was commissioned by Patrick Holland, Controller, BBC Two and Emma Cahusac, Commissioning Editor, Arts and is produced by John Wyver at Illuminations Television.

The play, which is set in Denmark, sees Prince Hamlet wreak his revenge upon his uncle, Claudius, after being visited by the ghost of his father, King Hamlet.

Claudius had murdered his own brother and seized the throne, also marrying his deceased brother’s widow.

Hamlet is Shakespeare’s longest play.

Hamlet airs on BBC Two on March 31 at 9pm.

The actor will be directed by Kenneth Branagh in the Shakespearean classic, which runs from September 1 to 23 only as a fundraiser for the drama school.

It’ll be staged in the 160-seat Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre, meaning tickets will be very limited indeed.

A ballot for tickets is set to open at midday today, August 1, and will close  at 6pm on Sunday, August 6.

Tickets will then be allocated at random, with the successful applicants being given 48 hours in which to book their seats.

The ballot will open on the play’s official site, where tickets cost £95 or £45. Under 25s can get in for £15, and ID will be required on the door.

“Hamlet presents almost limitless possibilities for interpretation,” Hiddleston said in a statement. 

“I can’t wait to explore them, with this great cast, at RADA.

“Kenneth Branagh and I have long talked about working on the play together, and now felt like the right time, at the right place. To be guided through it by him as a director, an expert and a friend, is our great good fortune.”

“I believe Shakespeare and RADA are very good things,” Branagh added. “This production celebrates both. 

“We bring actors, writers, directors and technicians from last year’s KBTC Garrick season, and team them with RADA graduates past and present, together with artists from the larger creative world to explore Shakespeare’s Hamlet.”

Also in the cast are Ayesha Antoine, Lolita Chakrabarti, Nicholas Farrell, Sean Foley,  Ansu Kabia, Caroline Martin, Eleanor de Rohan, Irfan Shamji  and Kathryn Wilder.

RADA are aiming to raise £20 million to regenerate the Chenies Street site in London.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a pre-investigation check into the actions of police officers after a video of a crying boy being forcefully led away and shoved into a police car in central Moscow gained the attention of the online community and human rights advocates.

The boy, who is reportedly nine or ten years old, was reading Shakespearean excerpts aloud in the street when police swung into action, claiming the child was unattended and being forced to beg.

He was detained on Friday evening near Moscow’s historic Arbat Street, popular with both tourists and locals. A clip of what appears to be a violent detention was shared on Facebook by an eyewitness, who said she decided to intervene when she heard the child screaming “in hysterics.”

Another woman, who is heard saying she knows the child and his parents, and addressing the crying boy by name, is seen trying to prevent the police officers from taking the boy away.

Chairman of the public council under the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Anatoly Kucherena, has reportedly stepped in.

Russia’s ombudswoman for children’s rights, Anna Kuznetsova, has promised to carefully monitor the situation, saying it’s “too early to make firm conclusions,” and that both the child’s security “at home and in the street” as well as the actions of the police need to be thoroughly checked.

The boy had been begging when he was detained, Moscow police’s press office told TASS.

“The child was begging when he was spotted by police officers, but considering his age, he is not a subject of an administrative offense,” the press office said on Saturday.

The boy “was alone in the street, where he turned to passers-by and car drivers. He told the police he had been collecting money, unaccompanied by parents or legal representatives,” Interfax cited a police spokesperson as saying.

“Given these circumstances,” the minor was taken to a police department, authorities said. After his father arrived, papers accusing the adult of non-fulfillment of his duties on the child’s upbringing were also drafted.

However, later on Saturday, Russia’s NTV channel reported that police had apologized to the family. Citing a lawyer, the report said all accusations against the boy’s father had been withdrawn and a separate check into the actions of the officers had been launched.

According to the boy’s father, Ilya Skavronsky, his wife and son were on a walk in downtown Moscow when the incident happened. The boy attends drama classes and reciting literature pieces in the street helps him overcome his insecurities, NTV quoted the father as saying.

“My wife was reading the book on a bench nearby, and the child recited ‘Hamlet.’ Then the police squad arrived, and they discussed something with the boy without [his stepmother] involved. They then twisted him, there is a video recording of what had happened,” he said. He added that the incident has made his wife feel unwell.

Earlier this month, a Moscow journalist published video footage of a well-dressed boy also reciting ‘Hamlet’ on the Moscow’s famous pedestrian street, saying, he “has never seen anything like this before” and calling the boy “a street prince.”

Finally, The Public has officially announced the plans for the Isaac-starring production. Said plans happen to also include Keegan-Michael Key.

In a press release, the Public has announced that the production will begin previews on June 20, and run through September 3. The cast is not yet complete, but the actors who’ve joined thus far are Isaac (in the titular role), Key (as Horatio, Hamlet‘s bestie/confidant and the one main character who doesn’t get killed in the play’s final blood bath), Fun Home‘s Roberta Colindrez as Rosencrantz, veteran theater actor Peter Friedman as Polonius, Gayle Rankin (who’s about to co-star in Jenji Kohan’s Netflix wrestling comedy series, G.L.O.W.) as Ophelia and Second Gravedigger, Peter and the Starcatcher actor Matthew Saldívar as Guildenstern, and Boardwalk Empire‘s Anatol Yusuf as Laertes. The Public refers to it as an “electrifyingly intimate production”; Sam Gold is no stranger to exceedingly intimate takes on Shakespeare, as was seen in his production of Othello at the New York Theatre Workshop.

Gold’s Hamlet was originally supposed to be performed at Brooklyn’s Theater for a New Audience, but those plans deteriorated, as the New York Times reported last year, with Gold (who also formerly directed Fun Home) citing “artistic differences” with the theater and announcing plans to move the play to the Public Theater, after tickets had already been sold at the former. (Both Gold and Isaac have affiliations with the Public; Gold’s Fun Home premiered there, and Isaac having performed twice in their Shakespeare in the Park series.)

Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public, said in a statement:

Oscar Isaac starred in the first show I produced at the Delacorte, Two Gents in the summer of 2005. His Romeo two years later was more proof of his brilliance. Sam Gold’s production of Fun Home was one of the most extraordinary directorial feats I’ve ever produced. The prospect of the two of them collaborating on what is arguably the greatest play ever written is joyous.
