GAZA/SDEROT, Israel (Reuters) – Israel and Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip, agreed on a truce on Thursday, two Palestinian officials said, an understanding that would end an escalation in fighting that has drawn mutual threats of war.
There was no formal comment from Israel, but an Israeli official who spoke on condition of anonymity denied a cease-fire had been reached. Israel rarely acknowledges reaching any such agreement with Hamas, a group it designates as a terrorist organization and with which it has fought three wars in the past decade.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

“IDF fighter jets targeted over 20 terror sites in military compounds and in a Hamas training camp. Among the sites targeted were a weapons manufacturing and storage facility, a complex used for the Hamas naval force and a military compound used for rocket-launching experiments,” the IDF said Thursday morning.
At least three people were killed and over a dozen injured in the Israeli raids, according to Wafa News.
The Israeli military said it was forced to respond to an ongoing barrage of missile fire coming from the Gaza strip. Throughout the course of Wednesday and early hours of Thursday morning, Hamas fired over 150 projectiles into southern Israel, forcing the IDF to initially conduct 12 raids on the Palestinian enclave. More raids were then ordered after Hamas failed to stop their belligerent activity.
Escalation between #Hamas & #Israel continues.

“Additionally, five training camps were targeted as well as a main warehouse and a meeting point used by the senior commanders of the Khan Yunis Brigade,” the IDF said. “Thus far, over 140 of Hamas’ strategic military sites have been targeted.”
The IDF remains on high alert and said it is prepared for a variety of scenarios. “Hamas is responsible and bears the consequences for the ongoing events,” the military reiterated.
While sirens continue to sound off in southern Israel, the Iron Dome managed to intercept 25 launches out of an estimated 150 fired by the militants. The city of Sderot saw the most action throughout Wednesday, with at least four projectiles landing there.
The rest of the missiles are believed to have landed in uninhabited areas. At least 19 people so far have sought medical help related to the attacks. Among the latest casualties is a 30-year-old foreign worker from Thailand who suffered severe injuries to her chest and limbs, Times of Israel reports.
Wednesday’s cross-border escalation is believed to have started after an IDF tank struck Hamas posts in Gaza, in retaliation for an attack on a vehicle involved in the construction of a barrier along the border.

Israeli fighter jets have carried out strikes against Hamas targets in the Gaza strip, in response to the violence and “terrorist acts” the group instigated at the border, as well as cross-border rocket launches, the IDF said.
“Tonight, IDF fighter jets targeted an attack terror tunnel in southern Gaza, in addition to several terror sites throughout Gaza, among them complexes used to prepare arson terror attacks and a Hamas terror training facility,” the IDF said, posting a video of the strike.

The strikes, the army said, were conducted in response to Hamas-instigated violence along the security fence at the Israeli-Gaza border, and to the cross-border arson attacks which, the IDF claimed, damages Israeli land on a daily basis.
During the Israeli raid, Hamas militants reportedly retaliated by launching 17 rockets, five of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. “Hamas is responsible for the events transpiring in Gaza and emanating from it and will bear the consequences for its actions,” the IDF said.

Hamas built several fake apps to lure in Israeli soldiers and steal sensitive security information, Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) has claimed.
Hundreds of Israeli soldiers were reportedly contacted on social media this year by a trove of dummy profiles and asked to download various apps available on Google Play, including GlanceLove, a fake dating site, and Golden Cup, a World Cup scoring app. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Around 500 soldiers have been approached by suspicious people on social media and the WhatsApp messaging service, who used Israeli numbers and persuaded them to download specific applications from Google Play, the Jerusalem Post reported, citing high-ranking intelligence officials.
They claimed that Hamas used the dating apps WinkChat and GlanceLove, as well as the GoldenCup app for those following the World Cup in Russia, to hack into phones and gather intelligence about the IDF.
The apps compromised the Android phones of the Israeli servicemen with Trojan viruses that allowed them access to their location, pictures, text messages and contact lists. They also enabled Hamas hackers to have remote access to their camera and microphone in order to take photos and record conversations without the users’ knowledge.
An Israeli intelligence operation, which was launched in March under the codename “Heart Breaker,” uncovered a cell of 11 people involved in distributing the malware. The malicious apps have been already removed from Google’s store. Significant damage was avoided as a result of its activities, but “there was, of course, a potential of serious harm to national security,” an intelligence official said.
Hamas has “wide capabilities” in the field, the sources said, as quoted by the Jerusalem Post, adding that the applications created by the group this time were a lot more believable than those used in earlier attempts to honeytrap the phones of Israeli soldiers. “It was actually a very good one,” another official said of the GoldenCup app.
However, the texts in Hebrew were said to be poorly written, containing many spelling and grammatical mistakes.
The intelligence officials also said that the majority of the troops didn’t fall for the ploy by Hamas, and they reported being approached online to their supervisors in accordance with the IDF guidelines. Only around 100 troops eventually downloaded one of the three apps, according to the officials.
Both male and female troops were contacted online, often in flirty and romantic ways, with women curbing communication with suspicious individuals much faster than the men, the sources said.
IDF’s guidelines for social media urge Israeli troops only to confirm friend requests from people they know offline, refrain from uploading classified information to their pages and only get software from official stores, instead of downloading apps from links.

A vehicle and two Hamas “observation posts” have been targeted and destroyed by Israeli Defense Forces, while the Iron Dome anti-missile system has intercepted at least three rockets fired at Israel from Gaza.
A “barrage of projectiles” was launched towards southern Israel after IAF aircraft and IDF tanks shelled the militant organization’s targets inside the enclave. The destroyed targets included a vehicle allegedly belonging to a Hamas operative, believed to have been “heavily involved” in explosive balloon attacks. In addition, the IDF struck two Hamas observation posts.
“The Hamas terror organization will bear the consequences for facilitating terror and instability,” the IDF said.

On Tuesday night sirens sounded in Hof Ashkelon, Sha’ar HaNegev and Eshkol Regional Councils when nine rockets were launched from the Gaza strip, the IDF said. One of the projectiles was intercepted by the IDF’s Iron Dome Aerial Defense System. Afterwards, Israel detected three more incoming rockets, two of which were tackled by the air defense system. There were no reports of injuries or damage from the other eight projectiles, which usually strike uninhabited areas.
Earlier in the day, an Israeli jet destroyed another car and an observation post used by Palestinians to launch arson balloons. Over the last couple of weeks, Israel has intensified its effort to stop balloon and kite launches of homemade incendiary devices, which have become a symbol of Arab resistance during the Great March of Return protests along the Gaza-Israeli border since late March. In order to put a halt to these terrorist activities, Israel has limited the amount of helium gas that can be brought into Gaza, restricting it to medical treatment purposes only. The IDF and the IAF, meanwhile, intensified the crackdown on Hamas, which they hold fully responsible for the upsurge in cross-border violence.

Sirens are sounding across Israeli territories bordering Gaza as the Israeli Air Force (IAF) is reportedly conducting new strikes on the enclave. Earlier Tel Aviv denied reports of reaching a truce with the enclave in a deal allegedly brokered by Egypt. More strikes were also allegedly witnessed in the Zeitun neighborhood, in the eastern part of Gaza City. According to Israeli Ynet news, the IDF confirmed operating in the Gaza without providing the list of targets. Throughout the day, the IDF has struck dozens of targets belonging to Islamic Jihad and Hamas across in the Gaza strip, before another barrage of mortar and rocket fire targeted Israeli communities on Tuesday evening.

The Israeli military says several Hamas targets in Gaza has been struck after a bomb exploded on the border near Israeli troops. The explosive device was placed along the border fence area during protests and exploded near an Israeli bulldozer on Wednesday, according to the military. No one was wounded, and there were no immediately reports of casualties from the retaliatory strikes, AP said. Israel has warned that it holds Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from Gaza, and will not allow the border area to become a combat zone. Hamas has called for Palestinians to amass at the border as part of a weekslong campaign of protests.
]]>Speaking to RT, David Keyes, Benjamin Netanyahu’s foreign media spokesperson, said the ‘Great Return’ protests staged by Palestinians along the security border fence separating the enclave from the Israeli-held territory are the “opposite of peaceful protests.”
“The aim of this event is to swarm into Israel and overwhelm it, and it’s a part of a long track record by Hamas of waging war against Israel, launching tens of thousands of missiles, conducting suicide bombings against cafes, against civilians and in buses,” Keys charged. He went on to argue that Israel essentially bears no responsibility for the deaths of 17 people and the injuries of hundreds more during the Friday clashes, as it only fought back against Hamas, which has been de facto in control of the Gaza Strip.
Hamas is, consequently, the one with the ability to rein in the violence, by demanding that its supporters stay clear of the border fence, Keys argued.
“The real tragedy is that it can stop now. There doesn’t need to be any bloodshed, there doesn’t need to be any killings, there doesn’t need to be any injured. All Hamas has to do is to say: ‘Stay away from the security fence, don’t try to infiltrate Israel’ – and all of it can stop immediately.”
Keys called on the international community to get behind Israel and pressure Hamas to stop what Tel Aviv considers a campaign of incitement.
“The whole world should be asking Hamas: ‘Why aren’t you telling your people to stop this outrage, why do you continue to wage war against Israel?’ Because the second Hamas says that, all of this can stop,” he said.
Ahead of Land Day, which marks a start of the planned six weeks of Palestinian protests, the Israeli Defense Forces dropped leaflets on Gaza villages, cautioning them against coming closer than 300 meters (985 feet) from the security installations. “Whoever comes near will put himself at risk,” the leaflets read.
Reiterating the official Israeli justification for what several Muslim countries have condemned as the use of disproportionate force against protesters, Keys claimed that protesters planted bombs “right in front of the fence,” adding they were “shooting rockets and guns at Israelis.”
“If this was a peaceful protest, there would be no problem whatsoever. But attempts to swarm into Israel and overrun it with thousands of people are not great,” he added.
When asked by RT to provide a specific example of the abovementioned offenses, since footage from the clashes seems to mostly show people throwing stones rather than rockets, Key referred to the IDF web page.
“There have been many attacks, the exact numbers are still being investigated,” he said, adding that those interested should go and watch for themselves.
Keys refused the idea that the spike in tensions might have been provoked by US President Donald Trump’ controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital on December 6. The move sparked a wave of protests in Palestine that were echoed across the Arab and Muslim world, which decried it as a blow to an already stalled peace process.
“I think what has been causing the tension has been the denial of the fact that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital, not the recognition of a historical fact that stretches back 3,000 years,” Keys argued, saying Trump’s decision “is a wonderful move for peace, this is a wonderful move for justice, it’s a wonderful move for history.”
