  • There are hundreds of underground nuclear missiles across Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana. 
  • The US Air Force says wind turbines can't be constructed within a 2-mile radius of these missiles.
  • Due to underground missiles, a wind turbine project in Banner County, Nebraska, was limited in scope.

In Nebraska's Banner County, the remains of Cold War America are buried right below the surface. 

During the 1960s, when the US was locked in a nuclear stalemate with the then-Soviet Union, it began planting hundreds of nuclear missiles across rural swaths of the country like Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota and Montana in case it needed to shoot them into the enemy camp at a given moment. 

Now, those missiles are preventing the region from harnessing its most valuable resource: strong, gusty winds.

The Flat Water Free Press, an independent news outlet in Nebraska, reported last week that in 2019, the US Air Force began to thwart a wind turbine project in the state's southwest Banner County. 

Two renewable energy companies, Invenergy and Orion Renewable Energy Group, had singled out Banner for its "world class winds," the Flat Water Free Press reported. They were ready to construct a combined 300 turbines across the region. 

Each turbine would have brought in an additional $ 15,000 in annual income to the landowner whose property it would be built on. The capital from the turbines would have flushed into Banner's school system and revitalized the 625-person county. 

But the Air Force contended that the turbines would pose a "significant safety hazard" to pilots — especially during storms or blizzards. The Air Force decided that the turbines needed to be constructed 2.3 miles away from each other to ensure that pilots had enough space to land without potentially digging their wheels into a missile. Until then, a quarter mile between each turbine was had been sufficient.

 "The new guidelines, explained to residents earlier this spring, significantly cut the number of possible turbines that could be constructed."

Banner's residents have been left frustrated and disillusioned by the Air Force's new guidelines. "This resource is just there, ready to be used," one Banner landowner said. ""How do we walk away from that?"

  • A surge in the dollar piled pressure on other major currencies, with investors flocking towards the "safe-haven" asset.
  • Analysts expect the eurozone economy to tip into a recession in the coming months as the energy crisis bites.

The euro has dropped below $ 0.99 for the first time in two decades after Russia halted the flow of natural gas through a key pipeline, intensifying the risk of a deep recession.

The currency of the 19-member eurozone was down 0.44% to $ 0.991 on Monday morning. It had earlier fallen to $ 0.988, its lowest level since the fall of 2002.

Fears about the global economy sent investors flocking towards the dollar, which is seen as a safe-haven asset. The dollar index was up 0.46% to a 20-year high of 110.04.

Russia announced it was halting the flow of natural gas to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline indefinitely on Friday, after closing it for maintenance on Wednesday.

State-owned company Gazprom said it would pause flows until it fixed an oil leak in a turbine. Yet many analysts noted the suspension came after G7 finance ministers finalized a deal to try to cap Russian oil prices.

Tensions in Europe have been running extremely high since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

Prior to Wednesday, Russia had already slashed the flow of natural gas through Nord Stream 1, which runs into Germany, to just 20% of capacity. The squeeze on energy supplies has sent both natural gas and electricity prices skyrocketing, although they fell last week.

Friday's closure sent natural gas prices soaring back towards record highs on Monday. Dutch TTF natural gas futures, the European benchmark price, were up 32.61% on Monday to 276.50 euros ($ 274 per megawatt hour), putting them on track for their biggest daily increase since May.

Many analysts and economists now expect the eurozone economy to fall into a recession in the coming months as households and businesses cut back on their energy use. That's weighed heavily on the euro, which was down almost 13% from $ 1.137 at the start of the year.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes have pulled investors back towards dollar assets, sending the greenback soaring and crushing other major currencies. The dollar index has surged roughly 15% this year.

"Offering 2.3% overnight deposit rates and backed by near energy independence and a relatively strong US economy, it should not be a surprise to see the dollar remaining bid," said Chris Turner, strategist at ING.

Britain's pound has also come under heavy pressure as the country struggles with its own energy crisis. The pound was down 0.23% to $ 1.148 Monday, and has dropped more than 15% since the start of January.

Naaem Aslam, a strategist at trading platform Avatrade, said: "it seems like traders are losing their faith when it comes to the Euro-dollar or Sterling-dollar."

He added: "Consumers are struggling every day and worried about their energy bills. There is no short fix for this, given the nature of the economic health of the EU and UK, and a major disaster could be on the horizon."

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield have been keeping This Morning viewers entertained throughout lockdown while adhering to social distancing regulations. The pair have been mostly alone in the studio for the last three months but after guidelines were eased, Alison Hammond rejoined the hosts in the studio to deliver a cocktail-making segment live. 

Alison may not have been in the studio for the last few months but she’s still been popping up on the ITV show via video link. 

Today she rejoined Holly and Phillip with a cocktail-making segment delivered behind her very own This Morning bar. 

However, her return caused chaos for the ITV show as her presence forced the Spin To Win competition to come to a halt when Holly and Phillip realised she was sipping on a pint. 

Alison was watching the presenters spin the competition wheel from the comfort of her specially designed bar at the other side of the studio.

Holly and Phillip kicked off today’s show by welcoming Alison back into the studio after months of interacting with her over video links.

Alison waltzed into the studio with a colourful decorated pole attached to her hat which could help the presenter keep a two metre distance from others. 

After revealing how glad she was to be back in the studio, she took her position behind her specially made bar.

While waiting for her segment, Alison spent the morning sitting behind her bar watching the show.

Suddenly, the Spin To Win music came to a halt as the duo turned to look at Alison.

“I’m in a pub, I might as well use it,” she joked and Holly observed: “You had a pint and the music stopped.”

“Hold on, let’s gear this back up again,” Holly added as the music resumed and Phillip spun the wheel. 

ITV viewers were pleased to see Alison back in the studio and took to Twitter to praise the presenter. 

One said: “It’s so nice to see @AlisonHammond back in the #ThisMorning studio where she belongs. Welcome home Alison!!!!!”

“Alison Hammond bounding into the studio with a new weave and a social distancing piñata on her head has just given me life #ThisMorning,” another shared. 

A third said: “Alison being on the show has already made my Monday #ThisMorning.”

“No changes, Alison Hammond is still an ABSOLUTE legend #ThisMorning,” someone else wrote. 

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am.

Carol, Kevin, and Vicki all made it to the final in the hopes of being Paul and taking home the £18,000 jackpot.

However, it wasn’t meant to be and Paul caught the three of them with just 34 seconds to spare. 

Bradley thanked the guests for their hard work and when he went to Carol, he said: “Tell the girls at the bowling club that I said hi.”

SYDNEY — The world’s largest futures exchange, CME Group, had to repeatedly halt trading in US stock futures for brief periods this morning because of violent price moves, in an unusual intervention that has stunned traders.

US stock futures reopened this morning in Asia after an unscheduled closure to mark the funeral of former President George H.W. Bush on Wednesday. Tuesday’s trade saw Wall Street selling off heavily, with the key indices down around 3% and the Dow down 800 points.

We last wrote about the Lexus GS one year ago to editorialize about the rumored death of the luxury brand’s sports sedan. Now, Dutch outlet AutoRAI claims to have gotten confirmation from Lexus Europe that the automaker stopped taking orders for the GS in March, and will cease production of the Euro-spec model in April. In keeping with last year’s speculation, AutoRAI reports the next-generation, front-wheel-drive ES will fill the role of the rear-wheel-drive GS there.

What this means for the GS in the States? We sill don’t know. But we do know that the ES moved 51,398 units here last year, compared to GS sales of 7,773. Those numbers represent double-digit declines compared to 2016, when the sold ES sold 51,398 units and the GS sold 14,878. In August 2017, spy photographers caught the 2019 ES testing with the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, hinting the coming ES has grander aspirations than being a florid Toyota Avalon. That still wouldn’t make the ES a pure replacement for a sporty rear-drive sedan, but are there enough GS buyers for Lexus to care?

Last October, Car and Driver reported that Toyota’sGazoo Racing brand was working on a new GS F, but C/D couldn’t tell if Gazoo meant a new model or the current one. Last June, Lexus Australia head Peter McGregor refuted the death of the GS. When asked if dealers were interested in both the ES and GS, McGregor responded, “I think what dealers like is a full line-up… that meets the market requirement in every key segment.” Making clear that he couldn’t speak on future product, McGregor also commented, “I think [a new GS] would still be a four-door sedan in terms of its application, but the exterior styling may appear to be more liftback.” The third-gen GS struck a fastback profile, and you could see the new LS as a modern evolution of that old GS design.

A member at the Lexus Enthusiast fan forum has found that the the next GS, internally codenamed 300B, still shows up in industry databases alongside the date “SOP [Start of Production] Q2 2019.” Throwing money at an updated GS F wouldn’t make sense for a doomed sedan. Could the GS reappear as a four-door coupe? Certainly, if for no other reason than that Lexus needs something to fill the slot between the $ 38,950 ES and the $ 75,000 LS.

Perhaps a new GS would go even further with the design language revealed in the LF-FC concept; Toyota’s head of advanced design told Automotive News last year, “At a certain point of time, the traditional, square, three-box sedan will go away.” Clarity might be a while in coming, but we should know something by the end of the year.

LONDON — The price of bitcoin is rising against the dollar on Tuesday morning amid chatter among investors that a major seller is unlikely to continue to offload more bitcoin in the near future.

Bitcoin slumped last week after it emerged that the trustees of bankrupt Japanese exchange Mt Gox had sold bitcoin holdings worth $ 400 million since the end of last year.

Mikael Kingsbury finished on the podium, but for the first time in 357 days, someone was standing higher than the moguls great.

Kingsbury, from Deux-Montagnes, Que., had a streak of 13 straight World Cup wins, dating back all the way to his last loss on Jan. 28, 2017 in Calgary, where he also finished second. His streak began on Feb. 2, 2017, in Deer Valley, Colo. 

On Saturday, Japan’s Ikuma Horishima topped Kingsbury with a score of 93.88, winning World Cup gold in Tremblant, Que. Kingsbury was right behind him at 93.27.

“I didn’t see his run, but I heard his score of 93 points,” said Kingsbury. “I just told myself not to get excited, just do the run.

Kingsbury captured a silver medal at the FIS World Cup moguls event in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. After winning 13 straight World Cup events, it’s the first time Kingsbury didn’t win in 357 days.3:15

“Overall, it was a good run. I got 93 points so I’m not disappointed. I’m really not disappointed that my streak is over. I’m even glad we can put that aside. It stopped at 13, and I’m pretty sure that is a record that will be tough to beat in this sport.”

Canadian is confident heading to the Olympics and proud of his record.1:15

Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Reikherd was third, scoring 88.44.

Canada’s Marc-Antoine Gagnon made the final, but finished sixth with a DNF.

During the first half of the show, it seems a woman – under the influence of alcohol – began hurling the fruit at the cast.

After being asked to stop by front of house staff, the unrest escalated – according to WhatsOnStage.

She was swiftly ejected while the show was momentarily halted.

Performer Jodie Jacobs tweeted afterwards: “SHOUT OUT to the woman who got bungalowed at @BananamanShow and began throwing ACTUAL EARTHLY BANANAS at the cast!! 

“She had her party poppers confiscated too! One for the autobiography!”

Co-star Emma Ralston posted: “It’s true. Tonight a drunk lady in the Bananaman audience threw 2 bananas at cast members. A theatrical first. WOW.”

Alex David Vass wrote on his own page: “And the award for most awful audience member I’ve ever witnessed goes to the woman tonight in the front row of Bananaman at @swkplay who, additional to talking continuously, threw a banana at a cast member not once but two times. 

“How does ANYONE deem that acceptable in a theatre?”

Another performer joked that the intruder could have been given a cameo, saying: “It was funny for 2 seconds but seriously….what did she think she was doing?! 

“Had she come to rehearsals we could have given her a cameo!”

Bananaman plays until January 20.
