  • Barack Obama won an Emmy on Saturday for his narration on Netflix's "Our Great National Parks."
  • The award makes Obama the second US president in history to win an Emmy.
  • It also inches Obama closer to prestigious EGOT status. To date, only 17 people have achieved this.

Former President Barack Obama won the "Outstanding Narrator" Emmy on Saturday for his narration on the Netflix documentary series "Our Great National Parks."

The award makes Obama the second US president in history to win an Emmy, and the first to win in a competitive category. (Former President Dwight Eisenhower was awarded the honorary "Governors Award" in 1956.)

It also inches Obama closer to prestigious EGOT status — an acronym used to describe the achievement of having won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. To date, only 17 people have achieved this.

Obama has previously won two Grammy Awards in the "Best Spoken Word Album" category for the audiobook readings of his memoirs, "The Audacity of Hope" and "A Promised Land." 

He would still need to win an Oscar and a Tony to achieve EGOT status.

The former president beat out David Attenborough, Lupita Nyong'o, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and W. Kamau Bell to win the Emmy for "Our Great National Parks."

The series was produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. It "shines the spotlight on some of the planet's most spectacular national parks," per Netflix's description of the series.

Obama was not in attendance to accept the award. Presenter RuPaul Charles accepted it on his behalf, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The series is also nominated for an Emmy in the "Outstanding Cinematography For A Nonfiction Program" category..

A co-pilot cheated death when a cockpit window broke and fell out during a flight in China.

The windshield on the right side of the Airbus A319’s cockpit cracked, shattered and fell out mid-air.

The incident occurred when the plane had just reached its cruising altitude of 32,000 feet, about 30 minutes after it had taken off.

The Sichuan Airlines co-pilot, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pulled to safety.

He suffered scratches and a sprained wrist, according to the Civil Aviation Administration, but was otherwise unharmed.

His captain, Captain Liu Chuanjian, performed an emergency landing, making an unscheduled stop in Chengdu.

In the cabin, passengers donned oxygen masks as the plane lurched to the side and meal trays fell to the floor.

Later, the captain spoke to the Chengdu Economic Daily about the ordeal. “There was no warning sign. Suddenly, the windshield just cracked and made a loud bang.

“The next thing I know, my co-pilot had been sucked halfway out of the window,” he revealed.

“Everything in the cockpit was floating in the air. Most of the equipment malfunctioned.

“I couldn’t hear the radio. The plane was shaking so hard I could not read the gauges,” the pilot said, adding that the cockpit’s temperature dropped to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

A passenger described the panic in the cabin to the China News Service. “The crew were serving us breakfast when the aircraft began to shake.

“We didn’t know what was going on and we panicked. Then the oxygen masks dropped. We experienced a few seconds of freefall before it stabilised again.

“I’m still nervous. I don’t dare to take an airplane anymore. But I’m also happy I had a narrow escape.”

A member of the cabin crew was injured in the descent, but no passengers were hurt.

There has been no information given as to what caused the windshield to break off. Sichuan Airlines said the flight had experienced a “mechanical failure” without providing any further details. 

Cracked windscreens are fairly common, caused by birds or lightning strikes, but to have one come off completely is unusual.

In April, a female passenger in the US died when the cabin window next to her shattered.

Closer to home, British passengers feared for their lives when two planes collided at an airport in Turkey.

Passengers on a Turkish Airlines jet panicked when it was clipped by a larger airbus, slicing off its tail.

Who is Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway?

Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway’s identity is still unknown but fans of the BBC soap have already met him before. 

He appeared in the New Year’s Day episode when the men of Albert Square took part in a heist planned by Aidan Maguire (played by Patrick Bergin). 

Callum was seen brandishing a gun before a shot rang out leaving viewers fearing Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) had been hit.

But before he fired the gun, Mick appeared to recognise the gangster as he exclaimed: “It’s you!”

Callum is an old friend of Mick’s son Lee (Danny Boy-Hatchard) from the army and was closely acquainted to the Carter family before they moved to Walford.

What is Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway’s connection to Aidan Maguire?

Callum is part of a group of men led by Aidan’s ex-wife Ciara Maguire (Denise McCormack). 

He transports expensive and presumably illegal goods, which Aidan’s team stole on New Year’s Day.  

Who plays Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway?

Callum is played by Tony Clay and was first listed on the credits for EastEnders on January 1. 

The actor has previously starred in a number of short films and TV series.

He first starred in An Ordinary Life in 2012 before going on to star in Foyle’s War and Stan Lee’s Lucky Man. 

Following his first appearance on the soap, he told his 1,027 followers that he is “very excited” to be part of the show. 

Tony added that fans should “stay tuned” hinting that there is much more to come from his mysterious character.

In an effort to keep up with its ever-evolving mid-size-sedan competition—including the recently redesigned Toyota Camry and Honda Accord—the Mazda 6 is gaining some new standard and optional features for what its maker is terming the 2017.5 model year. The lower two trim levels, Sport and Touring, are the beneficiaries of the updates; the top Grand Touring model is unchanged.

New standard features on the base-level 2017.5 Mazda 6 Sport include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. This change seems directly aimed at the 2018 Camry and Accord, both of which now offer several active-safety features as standard. The Mazda still lacks forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning in its base form; the former is standard on the Touring, while the latter comes only on the Grand Touring.

The 2017.5 Touring’s new bits of standard kit include navigation and heated front seats, while the $ 1425 Touring Premium package now includes an upgrade from the standard leatherette upholstery to real leather in either black or parchment. Unfortunately, this option package isn’t offered to those who choose the 6 Touring with the six-speed manual transmission; neither is the Touring’s other option package, the $ 1325 Bose/Moonroof/Satellite package.

Despite the new features, the 2017.5 Mazda 6’s prices remain the same as before, with the Sport starting at $ 22,820, the Touring at $ 25,070, and the Grand Touring at $ 31,570. The slightly more generously equipped 6 will hit dealerships this month.

At a Jamestown, South Australia event on Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company was halfway done installing a 100MW/129MWh utility-grade battery bank near the site of the 100MW Hornsdale Wind Farm.

The battery bank will be the largest grid-tied system in the world when it’s complete. (Currently, the largest grid-tied system is a 30MW/120MWh facility built by AES Energy Storage in Southern California.) The project grew out of a Twitter bet between Australian software billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes and Telsa and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. In response to Cannon-Brookes’ incredulity about the speed that Tesla was claiming it could install grid-tied batteries, Musk promised to deliver a system to South Australia, a state that’s suffered debilitating blackouts in recent summers, “in 100 days or its free.”

But “100 days or it’s free” didn’t include time negotiating contracts, and after the bet Tesla went though a competitive bidding process with the state of South Australia for access to an A$ 150 million ($ 115 million) renewable energy fund to cover the cost of the batteries. Earlier this year, Musk gave estimates on Twitter that suggested a 129MWh system would cost $ 32.35 million before taxes and labor. Tesla won the bidding round and partnered with French company Neoen, the owner of the Hornsdale Wind Farm in the mid-north region of South Australia. Musk later commented that if Tesla missed its 100-day deadline, the company could stand to lose “$ 50 million or more.”

After months of protests, a small butcher shop gave in to a list of demands from animal rights activists and agreed to display a sign in their window that warns customers that “animal lives are at risk.”

The Local Butcher Shop in Berkeley, California, made a deal with Direct Action Everywhere, a non-profit group whose mission is to create “a peaceful and beautiful world where the animals are liberated.”

As a part of the deal, the meatmarket agreed to hang a 15-inch square sign in their window that reads: “Attention: Animals’ lives are their right. Killing them is violent and unjust, no matter how it’s done.”

In exchange, the vegan group, also known as DXE, has agreed to hold only two more protests as long as the sign stays up for the next year.

“The most palatable option to us was to put that sign up” Monica Rocchino, who owns the butcher shop, told the Berkeleyside. “The protests impacted the neighbors and local businesses more than it impacted us… so it felt like the most respectful thing to do.”

DXE has held weekly protests in front of the butcher shop, while the meat vendor held classes. Some of the protests involved people wrapped in plastic and dripping with fake blood as if they were cuts of meat.

The herbivores said the butchering classes “normalized violence against animals,” adding that the demonstrations were speaking “for the animals and for justice.”

The business claimed to practice humane butchery. However, DXE organizer Matt Johnson said there is no such thing.

“People have this notion that there is a right way to hurt animals. We wouldn’t look for the right type of violence to kill a puppy,” Johnson told the Berkeleyside.

DXE declared victory on Facebook, posting a video on Tuesday that their actions “denormalized violence toward animals.”

Johnson also started a petition to get the mayor of Berkeley to “ban all ‘humane’ and similarly positive and fraudulent marketing of violence animal bodies and secretions.”

“This includes labels on products themselves as well as all messaging and advertisements in or about these products,” the petition states.
