After nearly a full year of speculation, Rihanna has confirmed that she “absolutely” rejected the NFL’s offer for her to perform during the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show. In a new interview with Vogue, the singer says she made the decision in solidarity with former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick, whose peaceful protesting of police brutality went largely unsupported by the organization. Kaepernick even filed a grievance against the NFL, alleging that it conspired to keep him from playing in the league. “I couldn’t dare do that,” Rihanna says. “For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.” The gig ultimately went to Maroon 5, with an assist from Travis Scott and Big Boi. When asked why he accepted the NFL’s offer, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine said, “No one thought about it more than I did. No one put more thought and love into this than I did. … I spoke to many people. Most importantly, though, I silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision about how I felt.” While there’s no way of knowing whether Rihanna will eventually take the Super Bowl stage in the future, we do know which stars will be performing in 2020: The NFL recently announced that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will co-headline the big show in February. Klopp is always animated on the touchline but the Liverpool boss usually can’t wait to leave the pitch at half-time. If you’ve ever been to a Reds game at Anfield during Klopp’s tenure, you may have seen him sprint down the tunnel as soon as the half-time whistle blows. And during an interview with Goal, the German manager has revealed why he’s always so desperate to get to the dressing room. “Sometimes I’m really waiting for half time,” reveals Klopp. “It’s like ‘come on four minutes, five minutes to go, so we can fix things. “The break is a very important time. “I give the players first the opportunity to breathe, to drink and the medical staff checks if they are all alright. “Then we watch a few situations from the first half, only when they are really clear for our message we use them. “If not, we don’t and I talk to the players. “I really like it because it’s a very important situation. “For example: you are 2-0 in the lead and everybody knows 2-0 doesn’t decide the game at half time, but actually sometimes it feels like it.” The two teams have, since 2007, competed for the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy and twice since have the Italians upset their much-fancied French opponents. But those wins, in 2011 and 2013, feel a long time ago and both came in Rome: Italy have not beaten France on the road since 1997. France have two points to their name already in this year’s Six Nations but both came as a result of narrow losses to Ireland and Scotland respectively, something Italy can only dream of after thrashings by England and then the Irish too. PENALTY ITALY! (Allan 50′) Former Scot Tommy Allan is on the scoreboard for the day (the penalty try’s conversion, of course, is automatically awarded now). France remain completely unable to kick, pass or scrummage accurately. Italy look a little toothless. It’s like can’t play, won’t play. PENALTY FRANCE! (Machenaud 46′) France extend their lead – but only inspite of themselves. Some fine counter-rucking earns them a HUGE overlap and they are four on none from 20 metres… only for Beauxis to throw it away. Italy’s exit strategy isn’t good enough though and France get a chance for three – not five – minutes later and take it. Still very ugly. SECOND HALF No changes at half-time really, other than that Guirado has passed the HIA he was ordered to have a minute before half-time. PENALTY FRANCE! (Machenaud 40′) An enormous Bastareaud steal in the midfield leads to a France break and the kick in behind is swept up by Violi, but he is penalised for holding onto the ball on the ground on his own tryline. This time the home side take the points and we go in with the French leading by four points. A poor 40 minutes of rugby in which France have failed to take advantage of a number of opportunities to score. 35 MINS This remains something of a stalemate of incompetence as both sides struggle to get things right with the ball in hand. The physicality of the French pack is starting to show though, with Camara fending off Parisse in a big way. PENALTY FRANCE! (Machenaud 29′) France take the lead. One penalty is kicked into the corner but a second one is too good an opportunity and the home crowd have something to cheer. (Not that they do very much. This game has been so short of quality.) Italy would be glad of being one point behind after just half an hour. 20 MINS France are in bits. Serious white line fever me thinks. They have twice broken into the Italian 22 now and come within inches of a second try but Conor O’Shea’s men have done enough to test the home side’s composure – and they’ve been found wanting. The second time, Italy turn the ball over and counter brilliantly before Machenaud kicks the ball straight out. Sloppy. TRY ITALY! (Penalty 11’) Well Italy thought they had struck back in kind with Ghiraldini dropping down on the line at the back of the maul. However, Wayne Barnes has been told to look at the replay and it appears the prop has NOT scored… but the maul was collapsed illegally and the try stands. TRY FRANCE! (Gabrillagues 6’; conversion missed by Machenaud) France win a penalty on the edge of the Italy 22 – Bastareaud is already barrelling through the midfield – and instead of taking the point, they go to the corner and are rewarded when the drive gets them to within an inch and Paul Gabrillagues picks up from the base of the ruck to score. Marseille is underwhelmed if I’m honest… 8pm: Here we go then! Tommaso Allan gets us underway. 7.55pm: Anthems first, two of the best of course, and tehn we will be underway in Marseille with France wearing an unfamiliar white strip. Here’s why. 7.45pm: Let’s have a look at this France team and particularly that backline. Matthieu Jalibert was supposed to be the future at fly-half, before a knee injury forced him off 10 minutes into the opener. Lionel Beauxis is 32 and back running the show – outside him Geoffrey Doumayrou is making just his third appearance while Mathieu Bastareaud will be his usual physical self at 13. 7.30pm: Is it ever easy being the France coach? Is it heck. Jacques Brunel has not only had to contend with two close defeats in his first two matches as coach but also was forced to ring the changes after a night out in Edinburgh saw him take disciplinary action against a number of members of the squad. Italy may not have the same problems with personnel but they have shipped 102 points so far in the Six Nations this year. Big night for both sides. Kick-off is half an hour away. He is one of the greatest and most original auteurs working in world cinema today.
He dazzled us with his international breakthrough in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. He has been lost in Austen with Sense and Sensibility, gone camping on Brokeback Mountain and dazzled our hearts, minds and eyes with The Life Of Pi.
All were box office and critical smashes.
His latest film is his most ambitious yet, but has many wondering whether the Taiwanese director has finally overreached.
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk contrasts the gritty reality of the war in Iraq with the jingoistic superficiality back home. It stars Brit newcomer Joe Alwyn as the eponymous young soldier, with support from Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel and Steve Martin.
It’s a brave and tricky topic, fearlessly examined in the film – but the controversy over Lee’s pioneering use of ultra high speed film has overshadowed the content.
The 4K format makes everything look so hyper-real that it almost looks fake. Many viewers and critics have felt unsettled and uncomfortable and unable to concentrate on the film itself.
I asked Lee whether he himself was satisfied with the film.
Lee said: “I’m very proud of it. Satisfied? Nowhere near. Baffled by a lot of the reaction but I think my eyes are conditioned by two years on the project.
“People’s reaction to 3D dimensions vary a lot more than 2D. By nature it varies, 10% don’t even see it. Rembrandt couldn’t see stereoscopic vision.
“It is really challenging but I just offer what I’m excited to see an find out about.”
The innovative director tackles such diverse topics and styles with every successive film, does he ever wonder what he is doing?
Lee said: “Of course, three times a day. It’s nerve-wracking but that’s the state of mind I like to put myself into making a movie.
“I’m an avid film maker, I still have a lot of curiosity. I see some thing on the horizon that digital cinema cinema allows us to do so (I want to know) what’s it like, how personal can we get with that? How do we deal with the old illusion transitioning to the new illusion – or non-illusion?
“That’s fascinating. Thats more scary than anything I’ve done so far.”
Is there any genre he would steer clear of?
He admits: “Ghosts, probably. I wouldn’t dare. When I make a movie I get so close to it, I’d be assimilating ghost stories.”
When I asked what film most inspires him, he replied: “Right now, I’d say 2001 A Space Odyssey.”
So, would he be up for making a science fiction epic next?: “Yeah sure.”
An Ang Lee original set in space, now that’s something we’d like to see.
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is out now in UK cinemas.
In 2015, the internet fell in love with a Super Bowl halftime hero. It wasn’t headliner Katy Perry, or special guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, who were also attached to the show. It was Left Shark, a costumed backup dancer who won hearts with offbeat, out-of-sync dance moves. Now that Super Bowl 51 has passed, we finally have a meme mascot to rival Left Shark: Lady Gaga herself, the headliner for 2017’s spectacle.
During her 13-minute performance, Gaga — dressed to kill in a changing wardrobe of sparkling, shining costumes — catapulted from the stadium ceiling, wriggled her way to the stage suspended on strings, and performed a mix of Peter Pan-esque acrobatics and signature dance moves. There were smoke screens, drones, glow sticks, and many, many memorable moments. The internet has run wild with them.
There are several ways to parse Gaga’s performance. First, her outfit choices, which make her look like an escapee from a science fiction saga or a superhero reboot I would want to watch.

It’s also hard to overstate the impression of her initial descent. That moment has drawn comparisons to a Simpsons spoof and Mission: Impossible, among other things.

Left Shark was a phenomenon birthed by the power of the internet. Without a keen eye and dedicated memeing, it never would have become rabidly popular. But Lady Gaga’s talent and outrageous reputation will long outlive even the internet’s best jokes. She’s already famous for outlandish moves: arriving at the Grammy’s in an egg, wearing a statement meat dress, releasing so many bizarre music videos that her wildest move now is to go “normal.” The stunts of her Super Bowl halftime show are a manufactured part of her image; even the jokes we make are still playing with a set of cards she’s dealt us.
An artist who ends one of the year’s most-watched TV performances with a literal mic drop and an airborne glitterball catch is hard to parody. Lady Gaga is already the most bombastic version of herself. All we can do is try to keep up.

Eerily similar to an episode of entitled Lisa Goes Gaga, fans noticed the distinct similarities between the cartoon and the live performance last night.
The Simpsons foretold Lady Gaga flying through the air on a harness in one of her many garish outfits.
This did indeed happen as the singer jumped from the stadium roof before later flying through the air to perform acrobatic moves.
In the American cartoon, Gaga plays a pop-up concert in Springfield, where she can be seen soaring above the crowd, almost identical to her half-time show.
Other fans noted that the image of drones lighting up the sky to form stars, a flag, and the word Pepsi was also similar to another Simpsons episode where drones formed a hat in the sky above a stadium, a hat that looks like the one worn on the cover of Gaga’s latest album, Joanne.
The sitcom has also been known to predict other major events, including Donald Trump becoming president of the United States.
In an episode entitled Bart to the Future, Lisa Simpson was called in to fix Trump’s mess saying: “We’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.”
The show also dramatised a horse meat scandal and ebola crisis before they became real-world events.
Some eagle-eyed viewers believe the makers predicted 9/11 by depicting the Twin Towers in a magazine.
The Simpsons airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 6pm.
Remember when quadcopter drones juggled balls and formed up into a Star Trek logo? That seems downright quaint compared to what we just saw at Lady Gaga’s elaborately produced Super Bowl halftime show. During her first number, 300 Intel drones formed the shape of an American flag, punctuating the singer’s wire-assisted fall to the stage below.
Ok… Gaga using Drones for the synchronized sky lighting was impressive

The “Shooting Star” drones Intel introduced last year are a foot across and weigh just eight ounces, thanks to a foam body designed to soften impacts. Each is equipped with a special LED that can produce four billion color combinations including, obviously, red, white and blue.
The performance is coordinated by a central computer that can do unlimited UAV animations in three dimension. Intel recently set a world record by flying 500 of them together (video, below) and said “we hope this experience inspires other creatives, artists and innovators to really think about how they can incorporate drone technology in new ways.” The sophisticated algorithms even check the battery levels and assign lesser roles to weaker drones — if one should drop out, a reserve unit automatically takes its place within a few seconds.
If you’re wondering how Intel pulled this off in a huge crowd under airtight security with strict FAA flight regulations, the answer is slightly disappointing. The drone performance was actually taped on an earlier night, and didn’t appear live to the crowd at Houston’s NRG Stadium (except on the Jumbotron). Nevertheless, as Intel refines quadcopter performers, you can expect to see them providing grand-scale spectacle in place of, say, fireworks or skydivers. And while might be a waste of their true potential, the algorithms it’s developing might eventually help make rescue, delivery and other tech possible.

]]>The artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta began her halftime show — already heralded by Pepsi as the “biggest music event of the year” — by belting out a “God Bless America”/”This Land Is Your Land” mashup while standing high above the stadium. (Hence, you know, “I’m on the edge!”)
She was then lowered to the stage for a gravity-defying performance of “Poker Face,” before transitioning into a smoke-and-lights rendition of “Born This Way.” We were also treated to a (Beyoncé-free, sadly) performance of “Telephone,” leading into another classic Gaga jam, “Just Dance,” and the emotional “Million Reasons,” which included a cute shout-out to Gaga’s parents.
Always good to her Little Monsters, Gaga ended that part of the performance by walking out into her seas of costumed fans before returning to the stage for some high-energy “Bad Romance.”
Days before the big game, Gaga was asked whether she intended to use her performance as a platform for a political statement, possibly one against President Donald Trump.
“No, that’s not what the show is about,” she told a Las Vegas radio station. “The show is something that is coming from my heart to everyone in America that I love so much. This is my country and I’m proud to be a pop star from this country. … I want people that watch the Halftime show that Pepsi Zero Sugar is putting on with us to feel the greatness of the USA.”
But rather than putting an end to the public’s speculation, this response merely caused people to wonder if Gaga was remaining coy to ensure a surprise on the big day. Well, I guess we have our answer now.
Of course, this is hardly the first time Gaga has left viewers, ahem, speechless at the Super Bowl. Her beautiful 2016 National Anthem performance — for which she donned a sparkly red custom Gucci pantsuit — became an instant classic.

]]>“I’m sure they want to be compensated, but in terms of events here in America, the Super Bowl halftime show is one of the best for an artist from a branding perspective,” says Derek Rucker, a professor of marketing at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management who evaluates brands’ presentations of themselves every year for the Kellogg Super Bowl Ad Review. From the huge audience—viewership each year regularly clears 110 million—to the media coverage both before and after the Super Bowl, he says, there are major benefits for a performer.
The benefits are considered so major, in fact, that, as The Wall Street Journal reported in 2014, the league has asked some artists to consider paying for the privilege of performing at halftime. It was speculated that this detail was leaked as a negotiating move by an artist looking to make a deal with the league that year, and the hope was that the musicians would win over the public on the idea that performers shouldn’t have to pay to take the stage. In the end, no one paid to perform that year.
In the years since, musicians have made a point of saying that they didn’t pay to play. Last year, the singer Katy Perry told the Associated Press that she “put [her] foot down very early” in her negotiation with the league. And on the same day the announcement was made that Lady Gaga would perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, ESPN reported that both the NFL and Pepsi (which sponsors the halftime show) made official statements that Lady Gaga did not pay the league, nor did they pay her.
Why has it become a ritual for both sides to come out saying that no money has changed hands? Rucker sees it as a protective measure for both sides: For the league and the artist, the faster the compensation conversation is over with, the better, because both parties would rather have people remember a great show than a contentious financial battle. “I think it has to do with authenticity … It’s almost like these technical details risk ruining the experience,” says Rucker. “In certain categories, the how matters. You look at organic foods, and there’s a huge pitch in how it happened. In this particular case, that conversation detracts from the event itself.” Additionally, the performers and the league’s statements are partly to defend their respective worth: A halftime show is a truce between an extremely high-value artist (as Zack O’Malley Greenburg notes over at Forbes, these performers are capable of making millions a night) and a highly coveted performance spot.
The NFL, for its part, has always claimed that the math works out for performers. The halftime show is an honor that carries with it tremendous exposure. Plus, the NFL fronts the production costs—reportedly upwards of $ 10 million for Lady Gaga’s performance this year. My colleague Joe Pinsker once pondered the question of whether performing in the halftime show is worth it for the musicians, and concluded that though it’s a hard-to-quantify value proposition, the upsides of the exposure and the acclaim of performing in the show likely win out. In other words: The Super Bowl halftime show is basically a one-of-a-kind, ultra-prestigious unpaid internship.
It’s possible, though, that that calculus might change in the coming years. Concerts have become a bright spot for the music industry as losses have mounted thanks to plunging physical and digital sales; the value of live concerts has been going up, in terms of gross revenue as well as tickets sold. Concert tickets have been getting so expensive that the former White House economist Alan Krueger, who reviewed the data in a lecture called “Rockonomics: Economics and Public Policy in the Rock and Roll Industry,” found that the most-popular performers were the ones most likely to capture gains from these increased ticket sales. That means that the exact same artists who are likely to play the halftime show are becoming more and more valuable as live performers. Meanwhile, the NFL’s ratings fell in 2016, leaving people to wonder whether it has peaked as a cultural symbol. If the NFL’s prestige declines and live performances continue to climb in value, the winning proposition might one day not be one in which no money changes hands.
