Coached by South Australian Darren Cahill, Halep will chase a maiden grand slam title against either Sloane Stephens or Madison Keys after crafting a 6-1 6-4 victory.
Overcoming a cramped schedule compromised by rain, the remarkable Halep single-mindedly hunted down her sixth victory in eight days.
“One of my best matches on clay,” Halep beamed post-match.
It was a tougher contest than the scoreline suggests.
Halep has lost two Roland Garros finals to Maria Sharapova and Jelena Ostapenko as well as January’s Australian Open decider to Caroline Wozniacki.
In complete command against Muguruza early, the Romanian had to dig deep in the second set, recovering from 2-4 down.
The ninth game was pivotal for Halep.
Having broken Muguruza’s serve to level at 4-all, she then needed 20 points – weathering three break points – to survive.
It was a huge turning point and she capitalised by breaking reigning Wimbledon champion Muguruza’s serve to love to clinch the match.
Halep finished with 16 winners and 24 unforced errors to Muguruza’s 14 and 31.
But her returning pressure was devastating, restricting Muguruza to just 49 percent of points won on her first serve and 38 percent on her second.
Cahill already has already established a glittering reputation as a world class coach, guiding both Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt to grand slam victory and the world No 1 ranking.

The second seed recovered from a leg injury to win 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 to land a major title at the 43rd attempt.
Wozniacki was in tears after grabbing the win, which came 14 years after her first Grand Slam final defeat.
The Dane will replace Halep as world No 1 in the world rankings on Monday.
Wozniacki was class on the court and class off it as she used her first interview after victory to apologise to her beaten opponent.
Speaking on court with tears in her eyes, Wozniacki said: “I’m sorry, I’m just taking a second here to hug Daphne [the Daphne Akhurst trophy]. I’ve dreamt of this for so many years
“I never cry and my voice is shaking but it’s a very emotional moment.
“I want to congratulate Simona. I know today is a tough day and I’m sorry I had to win.
“I’m sure we’ll have many matches in the future. It was an incredible match and again, yes. I’m sorry.
“Last but not least I want to thank my team and my dad.
“You’ve coached me from the start when I was seven and we’ve had our ups and downs and you’ve been by my side every step of the way, so thank you.
“I want to thank my fiancee who is here tonight. Without your support, I was a nervous wreck this morning but you managed to calm me down and help me enjoy this moment.
“Thank you so much for being here and having that special moment with me.”
Wozniacki, 27, has battled it out at the top of the sport for 13 years since turning professional in 2005.
And now finally her wait for a Grand Slam win is over after she fought to a 7-6 3-6 6-4 win in close to three hours against Halep.
Halep had her blood pressure checked on court in the second set with the host broadcaster in Australia suggesting she had ‘breathing problems’.
But that didn’t stop the plucky Romanian roaring back off the canvas to take the match into a decider.
Wozniacki broke early in the second set but suffered her own problems with a knee problem meaning she had to take a medical timeout.
By that stage Halep was 4-3 up with the serve – the first time she led all match – but Wozniacki couldn’t be kept down and she reeled off three games in a row to take the match, and the title.
Speaking on court with tears in her eyes, Wozniacki said: “”I’m sorry, I’m just taking a second here to hug Daphne [the Daphne Akhurst trophy]. I’ve dreamt of this for so many years
“I never cry and my voice is shaking but it’s a very emotional moment.
“I want to thank everyone at the tournament for making it happen and the ball boys, kids, linesmen and volunteers.
“You make this such a great tournament and everyone can’t wait to come back. Thank you.
“I want to congratulate Simona. I know today is a tough day and I’m sorry I had to win.
“I’m sure we’ll have many matches in the future. It was an incredible match and again, yes. I’m sorry.

“Thank you so much for being here and having that special moment with me.”
Beaten finalist Halep paid tribute to Wozniacki and said: “It’s not easy to talk now but I want to congratulate Caroline, she played amazing. Congratulations to all your team. It’s unbelievable and congrats for the future.
“It’s been a great tournament for me. I started with an ankle injury and I just wanted to give my best, which I did.
“I’m sad I didn’t win today but Caroline was better than me. I will fight and hopefully will have another challenge like I had today.”
Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki are going head to head at the Australian Open women’s final today.
The 26-year-old Romanian professional tennis player and the 27-year-old Dane, will face off on the court.
Halep is currently ranked number one in the world for women’s singles, but Wozniacki holds position number two, making for a tense match,
Halep previously revealed how she underwent breast reduction surgery in 2009, at only 17.
The tennis star, who was born in Constanta, found that her 34DD breasts were causing her difficulty in her tennis career.
This prompted the young woman to take action, and shrink her bust to a 34C.
The surgery proved to be a good move for the burgeoning star, who has climbed to number four in the world.
The tennis player first revealed her breast reduction at the French Open in May 2010.
It significantly improved her back pain and helped her to move up in the rankings.
She has since won £13,303,949.73 ($ 17,219,302) in prize money.
The star told the New York Post that her breast reduction improved her game drastically.
She said: “My ability to react quickly was worse and my breasts made me uncomfortable.”
However, the young woman also explained that even if she had not been a professional tennis player she would have undergone the procedure.
At the time of the surgery Halep said: “I didn’t like them in my everyday life, either. I would have gone for surgery even if I hadn’t been a sportswoman.”
However, she added: “It’s the weight that troubles me. My ability to react quickly, my breasts make me uncomfortable when I play.”
The winner at Rod Laver Arena is not only guaranteed a long-awaited maiden grand slam title but also the world number one ranking in the game of thrones that women’s tennis has become in Serena Williams’s absence.
The final will be the first between two non-slam winners in 38 years, since Hana Mandlikova beat home favourite Wendy Turnbull in 1980.
But in a fortnight where the seeds have been scattered to the wind, Halep and Wozniacki may both feel fortunate to still be in the hunt.
In arguably the clash of the tournament, top seed Halep had to save three match points and battle back from a set down in a marathon thriller against American Lauren Davis in the third round.
Still recovering from an ankle injury, the Romanian needed to save two further match points in another three-set classic against 2016 champion Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.
Second seed Wozniacki also had to save two match points and claw back from 5-1 down in her early round match against Croatia’s Jana Fett.

When they last met, eventual champion Wozniacki thrashed Halep in straight sets in the round-robin phase of the WTA Finals in Singapore in October and holds a 4-2 career record over the Romanian.
But on hardcourts, the ledger is square at 2-2.
“It’s going to be a different match, new match, a tough one. Emotions are there,” Halep said.
“Pressures are there for both of us. We’ll see what is going to happen.”
They will both privately burn for a breakthrough as two players who have come close but never quite been able to seal the deal.
Each have failed twice in Grand Slam finals and long played with queries about whether they have the mental fortitude to clinch one of the major trophies.
Wozniacki, who lost the 2009 U.S. Open final to Belgian Kim Clijsters and again in 2014 to Williams, laboured under the tag of “world number one without a grand slam” for the 67 weeks she was at the top in 2010-12.
Since October, 26-year-old Halep is now the holder of that dubious honour, having missed out in last year’s French Open final to Latvian teen Jelena Ostapenko and also to Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros in 2014.
In a tournament that has shaken out a raft of baseline bashers, it is two scrambling counter-punchers that have survived and now have their chance.
Before the Australian Open started, Simona Halep had earned a huge $ 20,912,291 in her tennis career.
The Romanian turned pro in 2006 which means she has averaged close to $ 2million a year playing professional tennis.
If Halep beats Caroline Wozniacki in the Australian Open final she will bank the biggest cheque of her career – $ 3.29million. The runner-up, meanwhile, will take $ 1.65m.
Halep is ranked 15th on the all-time career prize money leaders in women’s tennis.

Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki will compete for high stakes in Saturday’s Australian Open final, having each needed to save match points to prevent a premature exit at Melbourne Park.
Little wonder Denmark’s most accomplished tennis player described herself as feeling like she was playing with “house money” at Melbourne Park.
The latest was unseeded Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., who fell to top-seeded Simona Halep of Romania 6-2, 6-2 in their second round match in Melbourne on Thursday. Halep next plays Lauren Davis.
Halep’s gained some revenge from the last — and only — time the pair met in a Grand Slam tournament. At Wimbledon in 2014, Bouchard defeated Halep in the semifinals before advancing to the final, where she lost to Petra Kvitova.
On Tuesday, 22nd seed Milos Raonic was stunned by unseeded Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in four sets in the opening round.
The Thornhill, Ont., resident, who is coming off an injury-filled season, had reached at least the quarterfinals in Melbourne Park the last three years.
Denis Shapovalov is also leaving Melbourne empty-handed. He lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round of their match on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil and American Ryan Harrison lost their first-round match against Rohan Bopanna Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Pickering, Ont., native Adil Shamasdin and his partner Neal Skupski of the United Kingdom were also ousted by their first-round opponents Marcus Daniell and Dominic Inglot 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
In women’s doubles, fellow Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner Yifan Xu of China advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens and Francesca Schiavone.
Stan Wawrinka left it as late as possible before deciding his knee might just be good enough to get him through the Australian Open.
The 2014 champion was being way too ambitious. A 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 loss to No. 97-ranked Tennys Sandgren in the second round was his earliest exit in a decade at Melbourne Park.
“I only had surgery five months ago,” said Wawrinka, who still has a visible scar running down his left knee. “To be that far already, it’s more than what we could have expected.”
On a searing hot day at Melbourne Park when the temperature hit 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), No. 9 Wawrinka, No. 7 David Goffin and No. 13 Sam Querrey were the three seeded players to fall in the men’s draw.
Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza was among the five seeded women to lose on Day 4. Blisters from the hot court surface didn’t help her in a 7-6 (1), 6-4 loss to No. 88-ranked Hsieh Su-wei, who has been No. 1 in doubles but had a career-high ranking of 23rd in singles.

Six-time champion Novak Djokovic survived the round, but complained of the “brutal” heat in a comeback four-set win over an ailing Gael Monfils 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 that extended his record to 15-0 in their career head-to-heads.
Djokovic, who won five of the six titles from 2011-2016, is a step closer to a possible meeting with fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, who had a 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Gojowczyk.
The temperature had dropped to 29 C (84 F) by the time defending champion Roger Federer wrapped up his 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Jan-Lennard Struff just after 11:30 p.m. on Rod Laver Arena. The forecast is for hotter weather on Friday.
That left only Maria Sharapova, Aneglique Kerber and French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko as Grand Slam winners in the women’s draw.
Sharapova and Kerber will meet in the third round, meaning only one of the remaining Australian Open winners can reach the second week.
Sharapova beat No. 14-seeded Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 7-6 (4) to avenge a fourth-round loss in last year’s U.S. Open, the five-time major winner’s first Grand Slam after returning from a 15-month doping ban.

Kerber, the 2016 champion, had a 6-4, 6-1 win over Donna Vekic before the Margaret Court Arena crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to celebrate her 30th birthday.
“Happy to be playing tennis again like 2016,” said Kerber, who has won 11 straight matches.
Ninth-seeded Johanna Konta lost in straight sets to U.S. lucky loser Bernarda Pera, who is ranked No. 123-ranked and making her Grand Slam debut. She didn’t even know she had a spot in the main draw until another player withdrew on Monday. Pera next plays No. 20 Barbora Strycova.

U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys opened with four straight aces and won the first 11 games in a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 92-ranked Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Also advancing were No. 6 Karolina Pliskova, No. 8 Caroline Garcia, No. 26 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 28 Ash Barty and No. 29 Lucie Safarova.
Among the leading men advancing were 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, No. 19 Tomas Berdych, No. 21 Albert Ramos and No. 5 Dominic Thiem, who rallied to beat 190th-ranked American qualifier Denis Kudla 6-7 (6), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
]]>Sharapova, ranked 146 in the world after coming back from a 15-month doping ban in April this year, faced a tough challenge in the form of Romanian number two seed Halep at Flushing Meadows.
The Russian, however, managed her emotions well on her return to Grand Slam tennis, recording a dramatic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 45 minutes.
“How can I sleep after this!” Sharapova, 30, tweeted after the match, captioning a picture of herself celebrating the victory.
She talked at greater length about her feelings in the post-match interview on the court.
“I just thought this was another day, another opportunity, another match,” Sharapova said, battling her emotions.
“But this was so much more. You can’t control your emotions. Everything you go through is worth it just for this moment.
“You sometimes wonder why you put in all the work and this is exactly why,” she added.
The Russian five-time Grand Slam winner shocked the sports world at a quickly organized press-conference in Los Angeles at the beginning of March 2016, when she announced that she had failed a drug test.
The drug in question was Meldonium, a substance which in Sharapova’s words she had been taking for around 10 years on the advice of a family doctor, and which had been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) banned list just two months before the news, starting January 2016.
She was initially banned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for two years, which was reduced to 15 months on appeal.
Sharapova was granted a wildcard to the main draw at the US Open, having missed Wimbledon due to injury and being denied entry to the French Open.
She now faces another tough task to work her way up the rankings, but the Monday victory showed that she is in strong shape and is mentally ready for further challenges at the US Open.
“This girl has a lot of grit,” Sharapova said of herself in the same interview. “And she’s not going anywhere.”
The Russian, who won the US Open title in 2006, now faces Hungary’s Timea Babos in the second round on Wednesday.
