Eddie Izzard has been applauded by viewers during her most recent television appearance in which she asked for the pronouns she/her to be used. The stand-up comedy star appeared on the Sky Arts series Portrait Artist of the Year and asked the contestants and audience if she could be publicly referred to as ‘she’ and ‘her’ confirming that she was “gender fluid”. 

Eddie appeared on the series seven finale, which saw contestants capture her likeness. 

During her appearance, she tells them: “I think everyone should and must make life an adventure.”

And those watching the show heard Eddie say: “This is the first programme I’ve asked if I can be she and her, a little transition period.

“People just assume, well, know me from before… I’m genderfluid, I just want to be based in girl mode from now on.”

“She’s just now asking for people to drop the he/him pronouns she used to use,” it read. 

Another said: “The amount of people being transphobic towards eddie izzard using she/her pronouns is awful,, people can use whatever pronouns they feel comfortable with and the only thing you have to do is respect that, it isn’t hard to be kind.”

Eddie previously spoke out about coming out as transgender back in 2017. 

At the time, she told the Hollywood reporter: “I am essentially transgender. I have boy mode and girl mode. I do feel I have boy genetics and girl genetics.”

“This has already become a world tradition, when the Cold War begins between the west and the east or between Russia and the west, Russian ballet is always there as a messenger of peace, friendship and love,” Boris Eifman told RT. “It so happened that, today, we are the ambassadors of our art and culture.”

Eifman formed his Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg in 1977. Since then, he has earned a reputation as one of the movers and shakers in contemporary Russian ballet.Those who work with Eifman seem to share his artistic views, wisdom and philosophy.

“As we all see, [strained] relations between the countries do not affect art. We are, nonetheless, invited and welcome in Europe, we are welcome in America… We bring a piece of Russia, a part of ourselves here,” Maria Abashova, a principal dancer at the Eifman Ballet, said.

Her partner, Oleg Gabyshev, says ballet and politics should never, ever mix.

“Art must be kept separate from politics, and thus it can somehow cool down those passions that reign in the political world,” he told RT, ahead of the troupe’s Friday performance.

The Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg is in New York to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of its first US tour. The company will make its Lincoln Center debut with several performances at the David Koch Theater, where the Russian ballet guru will present his psychological thriller, Anna Karenina.

Eifman’s tour de force is based on Leo Tolstoy’s masterpiece novel and is set to music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

“I hope that audiences in the US will once again plunge into the world of our emotions, humanism, goodness and love. I hope our performances will serve as our country’s goodwill ambassador,” Eifman said.

A homeless man from Las Vegas is a “true hero” for risking his own life in saving two children, a 3-year-old and 10-month-old, from a fire. If not his quick actions, the children could have been severely burnt or killed in the blaze, firefighters said.

Anival Angulo, 36, who currently has nowhere to live, was wandering the streets of Las Vegas on Friday evening when he saw a smoke coming from a nearby apartment building, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue said in a statement. When Angulo approached the complex, he noticed two crying children inside.

Angulo saw a little girl standing near the door of the smoke-filled apartment. It turned out that the security bar door was closed and the dead-bolt was locked. “She could not open the door, so Angulo [started] pulling on the steel door and was able to bend it upward,” firefighters said. 

“The little girl ran to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. He could see through the smoke the leg of an infant on the floor. He reached down and pulled the infant out,” firefighters wrote.

Both children suffered minor smoke inhalation, but nothing serious. The Las Vegas firefighters said that Angulo’s quick actions “certainly saved the children’s lives,” describing him as “a true hero.” “It’s obvious if this person hadn’t been there, these children could’ve been burned or may have been killed in the fire,” Tim Szymanski, a firefighter who took part in the rescue mission, told local KSNV. 

Later it was revealed that the blaze had started on the stove in a pan of cooking fat. The fire quickly spread across the kitchen, frightening the children. The children’s grandfather, who was watching them, was in a back bedroom but wasn’t able to get to the children through the blaze, firefighters later told KSNV.

Angulo modestly explained his actions to KSNV. “Went to the door and saw the babies so I jumped the fence and I pulled on the screen door and I wrapped up the babies and pulled them out. I knew I had to get them out,” he said.

People on social media thanked the brave man for saving the children, with some suggesting that he should be rewarded with “a new home” and a job to start things afresh.

Roy Moore, the Alabama Republican currently facing calls to end his Senate bid amid allegations of sexual misconduct with teenagers, was given a hero’s welcome Thursday by religious activists in Birmingham, Alabama, who blamed the news media for their candidate’s troubles.

But even as he was embraced by supporters in Alabama, the White House moved to put Moore at some distance.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, when asked if President Trump’s endorsement of Moore still stood, said, “If the allegations are true,” Moore “should step aside.”

Trump himself has not addressed the latest sexual misconduct allegations against Moore. Asked directly if the president believes Moore should end his campaign, Huckabee Sanders said only, “The president believes that these allegations are very troubling and should be taken seriously, and he thinks that the people of Alabama should make their decision on who their next senator should be.”

The crowd at the Birmingham Marriott, however, broke into cheers and applause when Moore himself briefly addressed the audience and said who he thinks should leave political life.

“I want to tell you who needs to step down. That’s Mitch McConnell,” Moore said of the Senate majority leader.

Four women in total have come forward to accuse Moore of pursuing them sexually when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. One said she was just 14 at the time he brought her to his home and touched her over her underwear and guided her to do the same to him. Another, Beverly Young Nelson, alleged he sexually assaulted her. Moore has repeatedly described these accounts as “politically motivated” and threatened a lawsuit against the accusers and the Washington Post.

Two women, Kayla McLaughlin and Gena Richardson, came forward in a Washington Post story published just Wednesday saying that Moore pursued relationships with Richardson while the two were in high school and working at the Gadsden mall. Richardson said Moore gave her an “unwanted, forceful kiss.”

Speaking at a podium bearing the hashtag #StandWithRoyMoore, religious leaders in Birmingham blamed the media for the accusations. “Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the hero of the day, our valiant leader Judge Roy Moore,” said Faith2Action president Janet Porter at the start of a nearly two hour conference with over a dozen speakers.

Porter called the media “a lynch mob,” and press coverage “a character assassination.” She lambasted Moore’s Democratic opponent Doug Jones in the Dec. 12 special election for his stance on abortion, offering graphic and inaccurate descriptions of medical procedures.

Alan Keyes, chairman of Renew America and a former Senate and presidential candidate, said, “I stand with Judge Roy Moore, because he never leaves God out.”

“Roy Moore stands on the premise that when you come to strip away a man’s rights, you spit in the face of God,” Keyes said to the crowd. “If that’s what they’re doing to him, if when the rights of your representative are stripped away, what is the logical conclusion? That you’re rights are stripped away, that your rights are gone.”

Elizabeth Johnson, a blogger at the site Activist Mommy, said, “Facts should matter more than feelings, and the facts appear to show us that Roy Moore was framed.” Johnson published misinformation about Moore’s accusers on her site attempting to discredit them.

“Sexual assault is indefensible,” Johnson continued. “I am an advocate for victims of sexual abuse. If I thought for a second these allegations were true, I’d be the first person in front of a microphone calling for Judge Moore to step down.”

Rabbi Nolson Shmul Leiter, Help Rescue Our Children and Torah Jews for Decency, said that Roy Moore was working on behalf of religious leaders by standing up to “homosexualist gay terrorists” and “the LGBT transgender mafia.”

Gordon Klingenschmitt, a former Colorado state senator who teaches at Colorado Christian College and runs the TV show PIGN News, quoted the Ten Commandments — “Thou shalt not bear false witness” — as he described Moore’s accusers. He went on to mention Beverly Young Nelson’s stepson, who used a baseless conspiracy theory to question his stepmother’s account of her assault, and an inaccurate Breitbart story attempting to depict Leigh Corfman’s mother as saying that the Washington Post coerced the story from her daughter. Corfman’s mother had told the Washington Post that she was “horrified” when her daughter told her of her experience with Moore.

Many of the speakers singled out the media as being behind the attacks on Moore, a line of frustration that did not end with the conference speeches.

Flip Benham, the evangelical leader of Operation Save America, told the media present during his address, “You’re knee is gonna bow, and you’re gonna confess, you have no choice. Hell is a place you choose to go!”

At the start of the event, the event planner informed the Moore supporters intermingled with reporters crowded into seats in the small room that organizers “have requested no questions about any of the allegations” during the press conference portion of the event that followed the statements from Moore and faith leaders.

When the question and answer portion arrived, Moore sat back down in his seat. Porter, who had organized the event, stood at the podium to field questions.

The first question came from a CNN reporter who asked Moore whether or not he had touched any of the women who have alleged he sexually harassed them in some way. Moore’s supporters yelled in anger.

“He’s already answered that,” said one. “Hush,” said another. “Stop lying,” said yet another.

A second reporter asked a similar question, at which point Moore and his wife Kayla stood up and exited the room, and the press conference came to an abrupt halt.

“You were told not to ask about that,” a woman supporting Moore said angrily to the CNN reporter.

“You make me sick,” another woman said to him on her way out.

In a narrow hallway outside, cameras and reporters surrounded Keyes, who berated the press for their questions.

“You refused to stop your abuse,” he said angrily. “Asked, and answered, again and again. He could answer that question a thousand times, and if a thousand accusations were made, he could answer every one a thousand times and you would prove yourself a liar.”

Other Moore supporters passed by and added their voices to the cacophony.

“You did not have the decency to abide by the rules that we established for you to come here and record our conference,” said Pastor Stephen Broden.

“You were asked to ask questions about the issues, the issues about our country. You were not asked to ask personal questions about Mr. Moore. We wanted to hear what he had to say about the issues, and you did not allow it because you are the fake, lying news from the swamp,” said Ginger Barbee, an Alabama Republican who had spoken for Moore.

Benham told the cameras to pan to the reporters, saying the media looked “smug” and was “frothing at the mouth” over the allegations.

“Look at the mob,” he said. “These people are sick, sick, sick.”

During the BBC series, which sees home potters compete to become the new champion of British pottery, Johnny – who boasts a degree in ceramics – was reunited with his former lecturer Kate Malone. 

While the contestants looked on in wonder Johnny whipped out his apron and made an entire teapot in just 60 seconds. 

What’s more, he proved his masterpiece even worked while host Sara Cox and his audience gasped in awe. 

Kate revealed that the Victoria & Albert Museum even display one of his famed one-minute teapots among their prestigious collection of crockery.

Unsurprisingly, viewers were gobsmacked by Johnny’s talents and it didn’t take long before the 46-year-old began trending on Twitter. 

“I thought nothing could top @JohnnyVegasReal and @WillBayleytt but Johnny making a teapot in 60 seconds on #potterythrowdown is gold,” while another beamed: “Johnny Vegas making teapots…not something I expected to see tonight.”

A third gasped: “What?! Johnny Vegas did a ceramics degree and can make a teapot in a minute? #potterythrowdown,” which was followed by: “JOHNNY VEGAS just turned up in #potterythrowdown and made a TEAPOT out of clay in less than a minute. Send them all BAFTAs.” 

“Seeing Johnny Vegas make a teapot on #PotteryThrowdown in a minute is one of the most surreal things I’ve seen on TV,” noted a firth while someone else agreed: “Wow! Johnny Vegas is a potter sensation revelation! How many people can make a teapot in less than a minute?”

Elsewhere on the show, the hopefuls were tasked with making a toilet from scratch. And Ryan’s loo resembling a “turtle head” obviously had viewers in stitches. 

The Great Pottery Throw Down continues next Thursday at 8pm on BBC One.

Scientists have discovered the drug combination, which has few or no side effects, can both relieve pain and potentially reverse the damage caused by the disease. 

Preliminary data has been so promising that experts at Liverpool University have launched an accelerated programme of trials and hope to have a therapy on the market within five years. 

Until now medications have been designed only to help relieve pain, but these have side effects, including stomach ulcers, high blood pressure and even stroke. 

However, the researchers say this combination of drugs is likely to be almost free of side effects. Now human trials are to be launched into the therapy, known as APPA. 

Scientists say the results could be a “game changer” in the treatment of the condition, which is the leading cause of joint pain and stiffness in the UK, affecting more than eight million people. 

They also believe it has the potential to treat other painful inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. 

Professor Robert Moots, of the university’s Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, who is leading the study, said: “There have been many false dawns in the past in the treatment of osteoarthritis but this is without doubt the most promising. 

“The severe pain from osteoarthritis is usually managed with prescription drugs that are often not effective and that also, in many cases, induce unacceptable side effects. In many cases, major joint replacement surgery is needed to help deal with the pain. 

“This drug contains synthetic versions of two natural products, neither of which appears to show toxicity. Each on its own could be helpful but the combination of the two seems to be a potential winner. This could herald a new dawn and new era in the treatment of this disease. 

“The trials are designed to test how well this therapy works and evaluate the safety. This could save large amounts of money for the NHS and provide improved quality of life for millions of patients.” 

Professor Moots added that APPA also had “phenomenal potential” for other conditions. 

“This might be effective in treating a range of other inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and might even help prevent muscle ageing, which may be driven by inflammation. The potential of this drug could be phenomenal,” he said.

The BBC drama, now in its sixth series, has won credit for its compassionate and bold approach to issues including stillbirth, abortion, homosexuality, race and disability. 

It has now shone the spotlight on the issue of mental health by telling the story of the young nun who finds herself locked up in Linchmere Hospital, a mental health institution, where she undergoes electroconvulsive therapy. 

Call the Midwife writer Heidi Thomas said that she was keen to tackle the issue. She said: “I have a very personal interest in all aspects of mental health, as I grew up with a brother with learning difficulties and my family has been impacted by suicide. 

“Both issues were misunderstood and very hard to discuss thirty years ago. 

“One of the wonderful things about a popular show like ours is it has the ability to shine a light on hidden lives, and to provoke discussion. 

“Importantly, as a long running series, we are also able to show how mental illness can affect someone’s life over a period of years.” 

“We receive hundreds of messages from fans after every episode of Call The Midwife, but when we feature mental health the postbag is especially moving, perhaps because those who suffer psychiatric problems, and their loved ones, can feel so alone. 

“Seeing their problems depicted in a show watched and loved by millions of people seems to give them courage, and perhaps some hope that they will meet with understanding.” 

Praising the programme for its sympathetic approach to the subject, Alison Kerry, head of media at the mental health charity Mind, said: “Call the Midwife should be congratulated. It’s good to see TV drama depict mental health problems in a sensitive way. 

“When TV programmes cover mental health it starts conversations among friends and family and can prompt people struggling with their own mental health to seek support.” 

In the latest series, Sister Mary Cynthia, played by Bryony Hannah, struggled to come to terms with the violence she saw when visiting a young mum with an abusive husband. 

The nun went missing and was later found in hospital, where she had ECT, before being taken to Northfi eld Therapeutic Community in Birmingham. 

The real-life institution was praised for its group psychotherapy work in the Second World War. It helped transform patient and staff relations and end the authoritarian regime of traditional mental hospital, which treated its patients as inmates. 

Northfield helped boost a patient’s self esteem, which has been championed by this newspaper as part of its mental health crusade, and won support from Prime Minister .
